George Augustin; Kohnke; Chassaignac; Various
New Orleans: Searcy & Pfaff Ltd, 1909. HISTORY OF YELLOW FEVER. George Augustin, Assistant Secretary Louisiana State Medical Society; Assistant Secretary-Librarian Orleans Parish Medical Society, New Orleans; Author of "Romances of New Orleans" and other Creole Stories {Various Contributors} New Orleans: SEARCY & PFAFF Ltd., 724-728 Perdido Street, 1909. First Edition. Bulky octavo, 1194 pages; in five parts; charts, lists, bibliography; exhibiting normal shelfwear, edgewear, bumping, hinges rubbed; spine sunned and soiled, cloth creased and worn at head and heel; textblock evenly agetoned, else clean and clear. Yellow Fever was a feared and deadly scourge. New Orleans was built in a swamp and was home to thousands of open water cisterns, so outbreaks of disease were common. The epidemic of 1853 was by far the most terrifying: in a city of 154,000 people, nearly 8,000 died. The Picayune called for a scientific study of yellow fever. In 1834, a group of New Orleans doctors concerned about the spread of tropical diseases formed the Medical College of Louisiana, which evolved into Tulane University. The city experimented with several methods for fighting yellow fever, including trying to purify the air by burning tar in 1853; on the occasion, cannons were fired throughout the city. A final outbreak in 1905 was the last in the nation. Five years earlier, Dr. Walter Reed and his colleagues had proven that the illness was spread by mosquitoes. A massive effort aimed at curtailing the breeding of the insects (including public awareness campaigns) helped end the crisis. "No disease … [Click Below for Full Description]

ST. LOUIS SOUTHWESTERN RAILWAY LINES
Poole Bros., 1909., Chicago. A rare promotional map of Texas showing railroad routes across the state and prevailing agricultural products of specific regions. This copy was produced for a real estate agent named Thad W. Ward, "The Texas Land Man" from Quincy, Illinois, with the wrappers and an inset of the map bearing his name and his halftone portrait on the verso of the front wrap. The map delineates in bold the lines of the Texas Pacific, which traversed the state from Texarkana to El Paso, and the International & Great Northern, which ran from Shreveport, Louisiana, to Laredo and from Fort Worth to Galveston, both of which connected to the St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad. The state is sectioned with orange borders, and captioned with the supposed leading business ventures of that area. Some, such as "General Farming" and "Oil Fields," are somewhat generic; others, such as "Winter Vegetable Gardens," are oddly specific. A small inset map at the upper left shows the St Louis & Iron Mountain routes to Texas from Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, with a caption advertising, "Round-Trip Homeseekers' Rates to All Parts of Texas on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of Each Month." OCLC locates three copies, at Texas A&M, Hardin-Simmons, and UTSA, each with promotional material for different companies and agents. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

LORRAIN (Jean)

Jane Austen
London: J. M. Dent, 1909. Rare gorgeous antique set of Jane Austen's timeless classic novels, as popular today as when they were written. Each book measures approximately 4.5" x 7", and the set is approximately 9.5" of shelf length. All of my antique leather books are treated with Cellugel (which is safe for all book materials) to preserve the leather and inhibit deterioration from red rot. The leather has pre-existing scars and wear. All covers are attached, some hinges are fragile. The boards have some marks and stains. Each book has an upside down bookplate inside the back cover. Besides this and a few printer's marks penciled in the back, there is no writing, tears or odors. The books are printed on thick, quality paper that is not fragile. Most of the interior gutters are in excellent condition, but one or two have slight separation (see photo for comparison between best and worst.) There are several color illustrations in each book. All photos depict the actual books listed; please examine them carefully. If you have any questions, please ask. More photos available upon request. Please visit my eBay store to find more great books! If you would like to combine shipping with another item, just let me know, and I'll be happy to take care of it. Thanks for looking!
