The four paintings of Lowland landscapes are rendered with extraordinary precision and capture the best of the miniaturist's art. Indeed, they justify the consideration of miniature painting as an art unto itself. The album itself has no date, but we would conjecture that the paintings date from the late eighteenth century, based on the dress of the tiny human figures depicted in them. It is conceivable, though, that the paintings are a little later, as fashion in country settings tended to lag behind that of the cities, or the artist could have chosen to depict people in the clothes of yesteryear. The album itself measures 53 by 34 mm. Marbled endpapers. Gilt ruling on the boards. The book and its slipcase are housed in a presentation box measuring 11.5 by 14 cm, with a snap button to open and secure. Jean Jadot was a well-known Belgian Roman Catholic prelate (1909-2009) who would later serve as an apostolic delegate to the United States, among other prominent postings. He hailed from an aristocratic family and was a life-long collector of antiquarian books and manuscripts throughout his life. Gerald Tarleton saw action on the Normandy beaches in 1944 before taking of the Brussels garrison. The book would appear to have been a gift in appreciation for the liberation of Brussels. Condition: the book itself has considerable surface wear on its leather, and is heavily rubbed especially on its spine. The red leather slipcase, which has its own separate well within the box, is well-preserved, with only minor light black soil spots. The box is rubbed and abraded here and there, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collier & Son VOLUMES MEASURE 7 7/8 inches TALL x 5 1/2 inches DEEP _______________ THE HAVARD CLASSICS SET IS IN FINE+ condition - which is remarkable for a set 108 years old (in fact, for actual antiquarian books condition is higher simply because finding books in FINE+ or above condition is not common). The bindings are supple. All boards & bindings are firm, attached, square and tight. Pages are clean and bright, and free of marginalia. Prior owner wrote her name in volumes 16, 17, 18, 42. Volume 42 has been repaired with Archival Tape to its front board (see last photo) that has a crack running its length. There is, however, no musty odor as it appears that the water issue was immediately taken care of (probably decades ago). THE SHELF OF FICTION IS IN NEAR-FINE TO FINE CONDITION. Two professional repairs were made to the cracked front boards of volumes 1 and 20 (SEE LAST 2 PHOTOS). Volumes 1-7 appear to have gotten wet as there is light staining to front flyleaves and page edges. The situation seems to have been r … [Click Below for Full Description]

1909. Albums rubbed (one flaking with joints beginning to split), certainly Good or better. The images show occasional creasing, silver mirroring, & fading but are generally Very Good. Approximately 430 presumably amateur silver gelatin photographs, 6.5” x 5” and smaller, and a couple of real photo postcards housed in three commercial albums, oblong or vertical quartos measuring about 11 inches by 8 inches. The compiler is unknown but quite possibly “Takamasa” (first name) or his descendants. His photograph is the first image in the album we have identified as album A. The photos are dated as early as 1909 and as late as 1954 with most from the mid twenties to late thirties. Many of the images include manuscript and occasionally rubber-stamped or printed annotations in Japanese on the versos. An eight page English translation accompanies the archive. An impressive archive documenting life in Japan between the wars. Particularly interesting are several images depicting a banquet (with Geisha) and other events at a convention of the Japan Brewing Equipment Merchant’s Association in November, 1926. Other images depict the building of the Sankyo Corporation on the day of the Great Kanto Earthquake, scenes along the Tama River in Western Tokyo, and various views of Temples, Shrines, Hot Springs, etc. The accompanying translation is categorized by album (A, B, & C), with photos identified by numbers which correspond to added post-it slips. In addition to providing versions in English of the annotations, the photos are described as to place, etc. when known

Full Morocco. Morocco slipcase. Calf box. Very Good. The red leather slipcase, which has its own separate well within the box, is well-preserved, with only minor l … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco: Good condition. The majority of the spine is missing, covers are significantly sunned, limp leather is flaking, a 1/2" chip is missing from the front past down, but the interior hinges and text are near fine. I am offering this rare copy of Pebble Beach: Monterey County in "as is" condition. I am a very experienced bookseller and I use the term "rare" very very infrequently, no copies were located on OCLC (WorldCat), only one copy, a second edition, was located in auction records and no copies were located in the trade. The Big Four California railroad barons began development of the Monterey Peninsula in the late 1890's, in 1907 A.D. Shepard was hired to manage the project. The original Peeble Beach Lodge was completed in 1909 and he likely published this item as a promotional material for the lodge. As noted in one of the photos, publication was limited to 500 numbered copies, this copy is out of series. It is likely a presentation copy to the artist W.H. Bull who did art for the front paste down. W.H. Bull's name is located on the lower left corner of the front paste down and his name is embossed in gilt to the lower left corner of the book. W.H. Bull (1861-1940) was a noted California artist who also did many covers for Sunset Magazine. He resided for many years in Monterey County. Yes, the item does have condition issues, but it is rare and was once owned by cover artist, please email with any questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Military Demolitions" by Douglas MacArthur. Published by the Army Service Schools, Department of Engineering at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1909. First Edition. This is General MacArthur's first publication and is quite rare. 34 pages with three leaves of illustrations from drawings and thirteen leaves of photographic illustrations. Original blue paper wrappers. Then 1st Lieutenant Douglas MacArthur (who seems to appear in several photographs in this booklet) was a 29 year-old Army Engineer when this booklet was published. Name in blue pencil on front wrapper, a few blue pencil markings internally; very good. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 - 5 April 1964) was an American general and field marshal of the Philippine Army. He was a Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., and Douglas MacArthur were the first father and son to each be awarded the medal. He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army. From 1908 to 1912 the young officer (promoted to captain in 1911) was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he again served with the 3d Battalion of Engineers, taught in the Army Service Schools, and published a manual entitled Military Demolitions. During this period he also instructed troops at the Mounted Service School at Fort Riley, Kansas, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jane Austen
London: J. M. Dent, 1909. Rare gorgeous antique set of Jane Austen's timeless classic novels, as popular today as when they were written. Each book measures approximately 4.5" x 7", and the set is approximately 9.5" of shelf length. All of my antique leather books are treated with Cellugel (which is safe for all book materials) to preserve the leather and inhibit deterioration from red rot. The leather has pre-existing scars and wear. All covers are attached, some hinges are fragile. The boards have some marks and stains. Each book has an upside down bookplate inside the back cover. Besides this and a few printer's marks penciled in the back, there is no writing, tears or odors. The books are printed on thick, quality paper that is not fragile. Most of the interior gutters are in excellent condition, but one or two have slight separation (see photo for comparison between best and worst.) There are several color illustrations in each book. All photos depict the actual books listed; please examine them carefully. If you have any questions, please ask. More photos available upon request.
