The Works of Tennyson, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Macmillan And Co, 1909, 901ppKey feature: This work features two world-class fore-edge paintings About the book: For sale is one of the most remarkable fore-edge painting books on the market. The pages are gold-coated, and, when they are spread out, a secret painting appears! This particular example features two individual fore-edge painting, making it incredibly rare. Each painting is of the most exquisite quality, with impeccable detail, hand-painted by renowned artist Margaret Costa. One half of the book shows a shipwreck at sea from the story 'Enoch Arden'. 1909. Good, cracking to hinge, missing front flypaper, pages separating and creasing to some vellum sheets. Fantastic book on photo gravures of Oregon. Many are attributed to B.A. Gifford, some by W.D. Harney. All photo gravures present with protective sheets, very light browning with occasional foxing here and there. All photo gravures would be worthy of framing, but because of the rarity of this book, that would be a disgrace. Only one copy found on book sales sites currently, is listed on Biblio for $1,500. Please be sure to let me know if you have any questions or would like additional photos. Book will be properly wrapped, protected and double-boxed for shipment. Insurance is in addition to calculated shipping costs. Please wait for final invoice if you would like insurance to be added.

San Francisco: A.D. Shepard, 1909. Good condition. The majority of the spine is missing, covers are significantly sunned, limp leather is flaking, a 1/2" chip is missing from the front past down, but the interior hinges and text are near fine. I am offering this rare copy of Pebble Beach: Monterey County in "as is" condition. I am a very experienced bookseller and I use the term "rare" very very infrequently, eight copies were located on OCLC (WorldCat), only one copy, a second edition, was located in auction records (sold for $420) and no copies were located in the trade. The Big Four California railroad barons began development of the Monterey Peninsula in the late 1890's, in 1907 A.D. Shepard was hired to manage the project. The original Pebble Beach Lodge was completed in 1909 and he likely published this item as a promotional material for the lodge. As noted in one of the photos, publication was limited to 500 numbered copies, this copy is out of series. It is likely a presentation copy to the artist W.H. Bull who did art for the front paste down. W.H. Bull's name is located on the lower left corner of the front paste down and his name is embossed in gilt to the lower left corner of the book. W.H. Bull (1861-1940) was a noted California artist who also did many covers for Sunset Magazine. He resided for many years in Monterey County. Yes, the item does have condition issues, but it is rare and was likely once owned by cover artist, please email with any questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dowson, Mrs. Aubrey
[London]: Women's Printing Society, [c.1909]. First edition. Publisher's pictorial cloth-backed boards, with one of two original variant designs (with no noted priority), the present in NUWSS green, white, and red colors featuring children playing under an apple tree. Boards somewhat rubbed and soiled, but fresher than is common among books of its kind. Previous owner's signature of B. Andersen to front endpaper. Text block somewhat loose but holding well. Preliminaries toned. Internally a surprisingly clean, unmarked copy of this scarce activist cookery, which has only appears twice in the modern auction record, and which OCLC reports at only five U.S. institutions. An excellent early example of women's use of the domestic space as a site for enfranchisement activism. This cookery was produced by the members of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, a group of suffragists under the leadership of Millicent Fawcett (not to be confused with militant suffragettes of the WSPU under the direction of Emmeline Pankhurst) . Suffragists, committed to achieving the vote through peaceful and legal means, developed this cookery to fundraise for lecture tours, lobbying, and other collaborations related to the pursuit of the vote. Promoting the idea that the power of the group comes from contributions of its individual members, the editor Aubrey Dowson includes the name and hometown of each recipe contributor; in this sense, the book draws attention to the identities of the real women who have a stake in gaining their rights. Among daily recipe categories such as Salads & Sauc … [Click Below for Full Description]

He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., and Douglas MacArthur were the first father and son to each be awarded the medal. He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army. From 1908 to 1912 the young officer (promoted to captain in 1911) was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he again served with the 3d Battalion of Engineers, taught in the Army Service Schools, and published a manual entitled Military Demolitions.
