The Frontiers of Baluchistan. Travels on the Borders of Persia and Afghanistan. With an Introduction by Col. Sir A. Henry McMahon.

London: Witherby & Co., 1909 - Octavo. Original mid-brown cloth, title gilt to spine, French fillet panels in blind to boards, top edge gilt, others uncut. A little rubbed, neatly recased, endpapers renewed, light browning and scattered foxing, but overall a very good copy. Coloured frontispiece from a watercolour by the author, 36 plates from photographs, folding route map, folding coloured area map at the rear. First edition, a fairly uncommon book, this copy accompanied by an atmospheric original watercolour by Tate, which is reproduced as a plate in the book, captioned "Nad Ali. The delta of Seistan from the Tell of Surhdik". The book gives a fascinating account of the author's travels on the borders of Afghanistan and Baluchistan, and into Seistan, as an Extra Assistant Superintendent, Survey of India, employed on the Baluch–Afghan Boundary Mission, 1895–6, and Seistan Arbitration Mission, 1903–5; on the latter Tate was in charge of the survey section. Both missions were undertaken under Sir Henry McMahon, who was later Governor-General of Baluchistan, and who here commends Tate in his introduction for for the "strength and picturesque colouring of his portraiture of the country and people he describes".       Los Angeles, Cal.: Baumgardt Publishing Co.,. 1909. original maroon cloth, front panel stamped in white.. "Presented to / Lincoln Park Christian Church" faintly stamped on the. front free endpaper. A few mild rub marks to cloth, a nearly fine. copy. A nice copy of a very scarce book. (#151657). First edition. One of the more confused and shapeless products of eccentric American fantasy from the turn of the century, yet within this congealed lump of prose lurk sparks of unintentional hilarity and odd insight. The main section of the text is a compressed travelogue of a flight around the globe starting in the Gulf of Mexico, heading to the North Pole, thence over Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the South Pole, South America and back to North America. The ship is built of aluminum and powered by "liquid air." A touch of a button turns this into "VACUUM- ALUMINUM Corliss engines." The passengers of the ship witness various natural spectacles (lightning storms, tornadoes, volcanoes) and pass over an unknown continent with ruins of a lost civilization that might have been Atlantis. Part II consists of four short sketches, semi-unrelated to the main narrative. These narrate, partly via a speaking Sphinx, an apocalyptic future in which all the armies of the planet align themselves on the side of either East or West, and square off in what was ancient Israel. After one cataclysmic battle, and a cease fire to bury the dead, a lunar eclipse serves as a prelude for a vision of all the wars of the past, from Biblical, classical and medieval times; the sight of it sobers the nations of the world into a state of millennial peace. The author proclaims with Zionist fervor: "The chronometer of the universe is striking twelve. THE HOUR OF THE JEW HAS COME." Mankind finally arrives at the final utopia. An odd work which is not that easy to dismiss out of hand. The prescient rubs shoulders with the preposterous. Liquid air (whatever that means) is one of the author's obsessions, popping up here repeatedly. He foresees in the future the existence of vast factories with steel flues a thousand feet high built in the coldest parts of the earth to manufacture, or extract, liquid air and pipe it to the other parts of the earth. This sounds laughable, but, engineering issues aside, the atmosphere does consist partly of oxygen, which is flammable. The author is also bullish on radium, speculating that it may be the main ingredient of the sun; and that "- LIFE may be produced by means of rays of light generated by RADIUM." Vast pyramids of radium will be constructed in Europe to warm the climate and transform the land into an agricultural paradise. Elsewhere, and more impressively, he declares that Africa is the "birthplace of civilization." (At the time, this honor was usually given to the Fertile Crescent in Iraq; now it is believed that homo sapiens first appeared in the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia.) Flying over what we would now call the Brazilian rain forest, he describes this as "God's CLEARING HOUSE of the world's physical forces," the most important source of oxygen and other essential elements. Much of the author's message can be dismissed as boilerplate bomfog (brotherhood of man, fatherhood of God - - which, with Mom and apple pie, has served as the Brazilian rain forest of politicians' oratory since primeval times). Yet in the midst of the sentimental blather and scientific howlers comes a pronouncement which lies still (especially now) at the heart of a vital controversy, ranging Malthusian pessimists and regulators on one side, and entrepreneurs on the other. This principal has only found widespread articulation recently with the arrival of the Information Age. "HUMAN LIFE IS THE GREATEST NATURAL RESOURCE OF THE UNIVERSE." A very short book (mercifully, given the clumsy writing) that manages nevertheless to corral a herd of important fantastic motifs together: the imaginary voyage, the tale of the future (including a future war), utopia, advanced technology, the clash of civilizations, Atlantis and the lost race story. The miraculous vision of past wars recalls the famous Machen tale of "The Bowmen," used several years later for partisan purposes to rally English morale. Here it is used impartially to save the warring parties from themselves. "... deserves notice because it reinforces so many ideas of the period." -- Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 827. Bleiler (1978), p. 212. Reginald 15639. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 147. Smith, American Literature, 1901-1925 W-905.

        HAIGA HO^

, 1909. 1909. Very Good. (EHON) NAKAMURA Fusetsu & KAWAHIGASHI Hekigoto. HAIGA HO. Tokyo: Kokado, 1909. 23 x 15.4 cm. String-bound Japanese style in flexible covers with stamped title. This visual and textual examination of the relationship between "haiga", haiku drawings, and the the haiku themselves was a collaborative effort between Fusetsu, a Western-style oil painter who was also perhaps the most eminent practitioner of haiga in his day, and Hekigoto, a noted haiku poet. They were both intimates of Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and leaders of the influential literary circle associated with HOTOTOGISU magazine. Counting the decorative title page, there are 13 full page color woodcuts after designs by Fusetsu, 40 calligraphed haiku by Hekigoto reproduced in woodcut and a 38 page scholarly discussion by Fusetsu, as well as a few collotypes. A remarkable piece both visually and for its significance for the development of a new literary and visual aesthetic for Japan in the 20th century. Overall, this copy is very good in the very scarce, original, pictorial wraparound dustwrapper, which is split at the spine with some loss.

ANNE OF AVONLEA. With Frontispiece and Cover in Colour by George Gibbs.

Sir Isaac Pitman, London 1909 - pp (iii)-viii, 367 + colour frontispiece with captioned tissue guard. Newly rebound by Keith Felton in half crimson crushed morocco with lilac boards and endpapers, all edges gilt, bound-in ribbon marker, spine with raised bands, black labels, gilt lettering and ornamentation. Bound without the ads at rear. A fine copy in a pretty binding. Made from sheets of the Boston: Page, September, 1909, first printing, this British first is very much scarcer than the American first. Her second novel, about as early as a serious collector can practically go with the British firsts. I have handled Anne of Green Gables many times in the American first printing but have only once in 35 years seen a copy of the British first. Would make a very nice present for a LMM fan.         Three Years in Tibet with the original Japanese illustrations

Adyar, Madras: The Theosophist Office, 1909. Cloth. Good +. xv, 719 p. 63 b&w in-text illustrations, 11 b&w plates (including a fold-out of Mt. Everest at rear), one fold-out map at rear. Green cloth hardcover with gold print. Spine sunned and boards a little discoloured. Top corners bumped. Ink signature and pencil notes on front free endpaper. Text very clean. Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 – 1945) is famous for his four journeys to Nepal and two to Tibet. He was apparently the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel in either country. The first of his journeys to Tibet, the one recorded in this volume, was from 1900 to 1902. Since Tibet was at that time closed to foreigners, Kawaguchi had to first study the Tibetan language in Nepal, then sneak into the country disguised as a Tibetan. A Buddhist monk, he was searching for original Mahayana Buddhist manuscripts. Eventually his Japanese nationality was revealed and he was forced to leave. Publication of Kawaguchi's book in English was arranged by his friend, Theosophical Society President Mrs. Annie Besant. According to the Preface (p. vii), Mrs. Besant believed books by Western authors portrayed Tibet from their own Western point of view, while Kawaguchi's tale would present an Asian view of Tibet to the world. Kawaguchi's tale remains an excellent adventure tale, allowing the reader to imagine what it's like to travel to a totally foreign and forbidding country - with no safety net.

        Psalm 67.

N.p. A single sheet, measuring 29 by 20 inches, folded once. This large scale illustration features a priest at an altar with his followers. Their arms and faces are uplifted to the sky as they invoke the verse from Psalm 67 which appears as the companion text to this illustration: "Scatter thou the nations that delight in wars:/ ambassadors shall come out of Egypt:/ Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands to God." The artist demonstrates a lighter vein of the satirical wit he came to be associated with: men who symbolize "the nations that delight in wars" meet, greet, and shake hands as if to finalize treaties and seal political deals -- in stark contrast to the religious fervor above. Tegetmeier (1909-1987) became associated with the Roman Catholic circle of the sculptor-artist Eric Gill, working with Gill in cutting and painting the Great War memorial at New College, and eventually becoming his son-in-law. The back of the illusration is signed "E.G. Drawing" in what appears to be Eric Gill's script, suggesting that this copy was a part of his personal collection. Minor overall soiling, small closed tears to right margin, bands of light toning top and bottom.
