LEBENDE MARMOR-BILDWERKE [Living Marble-Sculptures. Performed at the Evenings of Beauty in Berlin by O. D. and A. S.] Map with 12 original silver bromide photographies

Otto SKOWRANEK; Max THIELERT: Lebende Marmor-Bildwerke [Living Marble-Sculptures]. Dargestellt an den Schönheit-Abenden in Berlin von Olga Desmond und Adolf Salge. [Performed at the Evenings of Beauty in Berlin by O. D. and A. S.] Map with 12 original silver bromide photographies (15:22cm). Berlin-Steglitz: Neue Photographische Gesellschaft s.a. [ca. 1909]. 8°. 4 pages. 13 photographies (whereof 1 a later print), all loose in a map with cloth spine, marbled boards on cream stock, green decorative title printing on front cover and 3 flaps. Outstanding set of 12 well developed and preserved original silver bromide photographies showing a consecutive series of nude scenes with German dancer and actress Olga Desmond (i.e. Olga Sellin, 1890-1964) in focus. Desmond was one of the first female performers who promoted motion nudity on stage as a means of aesthetic expression, and was therefore heavily oppressed in conservative Prussia, where public performances only of rigid bodies, e.g. as imitation of famous ancient classical sculptures, were morally accepted. Starting in 1908 she and her male partner, the athlete Adolf Salge, performed scenographed series of »living pictures«, often complemented by dance movements and supported by music. These so-called »Evenings of Beauty« (Schönheits-Abende) took place in the Berlin Neues Schauspielhaus, as well as in other German cities like Leipzig and Breslau and even in St. Petersburg. Of great popularity, well covered by the media and the cultural industry (even postcards were produced) as well as documented by this series of photographies for sale, those events were nevertheless prohibited severals times, because Desmond and her partners usually posed and moved nude, wearing only body-paint. But her reputation as a cultural (and also early feminist) trouble-maker was also a good business opportunity. Desmond even sold cosmetic products carrying her name, thus being a predecessor of Salma Hayek, Eva Mendes and the like. Known sets of this series usually contain 11 photographies, whereof the 1st is a dressed-up portrait of the actress and the other 10 show »living pictures«. Sometimes the prints were tipped on the photographer's (Hofphotograph Skowraneck) printed grey boards that also incorporate captions like „Adoration", „Venus Anadyomene" or „Flirt". Other sets only contain the plain silver bromide prints not tipped-on, like the preceded. Originally also a sheet with 4 ornamented pages of introducing text by Max Thieler was attached. Preceded set lacks this attachment and the introducing photo portrait of the dressed Desmond, both are reproduced in good quality. However it contains a bonus of two prints with motives showing the performer with a veil, unknown to the other sets. All photographies bear the stamp of „Neue Photographische Gesellschaft". Photographies with silver margins, boards of map slightly foxy, former owner's name on front cover and inside, flaps with some minor tears, generally a fine and rare set. Olga Desmond: Rhythmographik. Lpz.: 1919; Brygida M. Ochaim et al.: Varieté-Tänzerinnen um 1900. Katalog zur Ausstellung des Dt. Theatermuseums München: FfM.: 1998; Jörn E. Runge: Olga Desmond. WHO WAS THE ARTIST ASAI CHU [Tadashi] [1856-1907]: . Per Roberts below states, he was a "Western-style painter, born in Kazusa province, moved to Tokyo, later Kyoto, a pupil of Kunisawa Shikuro at his private school Shogido in 1875, and Antonio Fontanesi the next year at the Kobu Daigaku Bijitsu Gakko. In 1888, with Kawamura Kiyo-o and others, set up the Meiji Bijutsukai. In 1898 taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Served as a war artist in the Sino-Japanese war. From 1900 to 1902 in France, living first in Paris, then in Grez [near Paris], where he did some of his best work; exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900. On his return moved to Kyoto and became professor at the Kyoto Kogei Gakko; also took a leading part in Kyoto art circles as director of the Kansai Bijutsuin and founder of the Shogoin Yoga Kenkyusho. Among his best pupils were Ishii Hakutei, Umehara Ryuzaburo, and Yasui Sotaro. A leading painter of his time, most influential in the development of Western-style painting in Japan." He is well collected by world museums. *** Wikipedia has an excellent article on Asai Chu. Asai Chu was a Japanese painter, noted for his pioneering work in developing the yoga (Western-style) art movement in late 19th century and early twentieth-century Japanese painting. . Asai was born to an ex-samurai class household in Sakura, in the Kanto region of Japan, where his father had been a retainer of the Sakura Domain. He attended the domain school, where his father was principal, and left home in 1873 to pursue English language studies in Tokyo. However, he became interested in the arts, and enrolled as a pupil of Kunisawa Shinkuro in western oil painting classes. In 1876, he enrolled as one of the first students in the Kobubijutsu Gakko [the Technical Fine Arts School], where he was able to study under the Italian foreign advisor Antonio Fontanesi, who had been hired by the Meiji government in the late 1870s to introduce Western oil painting to Japan. . He also tutored the noted poet Masaoka Shiki in the techniques of Western art, and was the model for a character in Natsume Soseki’s novel "SANSHIRO." . Asai also used a number of "Go" or "studio names: Go: Mokugo, Mokugyo. . A number of Asai’s works have been recognized by the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs as "IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTIES.". . *** . THE TWO EDITIONS: [AND UNSODO THE PUBLISHER] . The title was printed in two editions: The FIRST EDITION OF 1909, superbly done, and a much later and poor quality edition of 1927. . This the FIRST EDITION OF 1909 is an exceptionally fine printing of the first pull off the woodblocks in full color. The quality of Unsodo in their early days was of the highest standard in Japan of the period. . The second edition was printed some eight years later in 1927, reflecting the world-wide depression attitude of poor-quality Japanese goods. This edition is c

      o. Some interpret 9th Symphony's ending as Mahler's conscious farewell to the world, as it was composed following the death of his beloved daughter Maria Anna in 1907 and the diagnosis of his fatal heart disease. But it is known that Mahler had a very sucessful season in 1909-1910 and had continued working on his unfinished 10th Symphony until his death from endocarditis in May 1911.       Verlag des Jüdischen Kolonisations Jewish Colonisation Association Vienna 1909 - First edition. Large 8vo, pp. iv, 54, one large folding table, art nouveau headpieces, at least one of which one by, or in the style of Ephraim Moses Lilien (Maurycy Lilien, 'The first Zionist artist'), well-preserved in the original printed wrappers; only a few light spots. The future infrastructure, agriculture, industry, educational system and cultural institutions are envisioned by this determined civil engineer and Zionist. The synoptic table at the end gives the statistics on the foundation (since 1870), population and economic output of 33 Jewish colonies in Palestine.         Excellent signed typed letter from Twain to Mr J Wylie Smith, Glasgow, dated Aug 8 1909. Recto only of 2 sheets 28 x 21 cms, with mailing folds, in original mailing envelope, addressed in Twain's hand, franked. The letter clearly written in response to a previous correspondence begins "My view of the matter has not changed. To wit, that Christian Science is valuable; that it has just the same value now that it had when Mrs. eddy stole it from Quimby; that its healing principle (its most valuable asset) possesses the same force now that it possessed a million years before Quimby was born; that Mrs Eddy, the fraud, the humbug, organized that force, and is entitled to high credit for that. Then, with a splendid sagacity, she hitched it to the shirt-tail of a religion, the surest of all ways to secure friends for it, and support. In a fine and lofty way -figuratively speaking- it was a tramp stealing a ride on the lightning express. Ah, how did that ignorant village-born peasant woman know the human ass so well? She has no more intellect than a tadpole..until it comes to business..then she is a marvel!", An excellent and important Twain letter.

"The first year of the new century marked a turning point in Rackham's career, for in it were published his original illustrations for Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm...The book was immediately successful, and its publication marked the beginning of Rackham's lasting fame. Two new editions were called for within ten years. At intervals from 1900 onwards Rackham worked on the original drawings, partially or entirely redrawing some of them on colour, adding new ones in colour and in back-and-white, and generally overhauling them as a set, until the final and best-known edition, of 1909, contained forty coloured illustrations and fifty-five line drawings...a comparison between the first and the last editions of his Grimm emphasizes the remarkable progress that Rackham made in a decade" (Hudson, p. 47-8). The great Christopher Lewis began his career at the internationally renowned Bayntun-Riviere Bindery of Bath, England, during the early 1960s as a finisher. In the 1970s, he established his own bindery and further developed his masterful inlay and gilt work, incorporating innovative painted highlights for heightened dramatic visual effect.         Savage Club house dinner Capt. R. F. Scott in the chair June 10th 1909 Welcome to Lieut. E. H. Shackleton.

1909 - Pictorial printed menu on card (35. 5 x 31 cm. approx.) with scenes by John Hassall and Charles Dixon, light frame stain to outer margins, contemporary wooden frame, an excellent example. A scarce piece of Antarctic ephemera commemorating Shackleton's return from his British Antarctic Expedition (1907-1909), known today as the Nimrod Expedition. This expedition proved to be the making of Shackleton, encompassing as it did, the first ascent of Mount Erebus; the first (failed) experiment with an automated vehicle in the Antarctic, and, most importantly, the mapping of a viable route to the Pole. This dinner was a defining event in the fraught relationship between Scott and Shackleton. In proposing his rival's health, Scott indirectly referred to the state of near physical helplessness to which Shackleton had been reduced on the Discovery expedition by remarking: 'If I had a hand in rocking his Antarctic cradle, I am very proud of it.' The result was that Shackleton left abruptly after the dinner and did not return. 'Even in the determinedly convivial surroundings of the Savage Club, Shackleton did not wish to be talked of as a baby, especially by the man against whom he had fought so hard to erase the stigma of weakness.' (Roland Huntford, Shackleton, 1985, 1996 reprint, p. 305). John Hassall (21 May 1868 - 8 March 1948) was an English illustrator, well known for his advertisements and poster designs. He was a member of the Savage Club. Charles Edward Dixon (8 December 1872 - 12 September 1934) was a British maritime painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose work was highly successful and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. Several of his paintings are held by the National Maritime Museum and he was a regular contributing artist to magazines and periodicals.
