        The Heart of the Antarctic

09, 1909 09, 1909 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of Ernest Shackleton's autobiographical account of his famous expedition to the South Pole. With half-titles. Illustrated throughout with two hundred andsixty-nine plates(collated complete), twelve of which are coloured, and three folding maps and a panoramato the rear of volume II. In February 1907, Shackleton presented to the Royal Geographical Society his plans for an Antarctic expedition, the details of which, under the name British Antarctic Expedition, were published in the Royal Society's newsletter, Geographic Journal. The aim was the conquest of both the geographical South Pole and the South Magnetic Pole. The Great Southern Journey , as Frank Wild called it, began on 19 October 1908. On 9 January 1909 Shackleton and three companions (Wild, Eric Marshall and Jameson Adams) reached a new Farthest South latitude of 88 23' S, a point only 112 miles (180 km) from the Pole. En route the South Pole party discovered the Beardmore Glacier, (named after Shackleton's patron), and became the first persons to see and travel on the South Polar Plateau. Their return journey to McMurdo Sound was a race against starvation, on half-rations for much of the way. At one point, Shackleton gave his one biscuit allotted for the day to the ailing Frank Wild, who wrote in his diary: All the money that was ever minted would not have bought that biscuit and the remembrance of that sacrifice will never leave meInk signatures and blindstamps of E. F. Andrews to the front of both volumes. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In blue cloth bindings with silver design and lettering to boards, and adhered Brodart wraps. Externally, generally smart, though with some slight bumping and a few marks. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Hinges arestrained. Ink signature and blindstamp to front free-endpaper. Pages are bright, and generally clean, with just some scattered instances of foxing. Some opening tears to the folding plates. Overall: VERY GOOD..

[one line in Greek, transliterated as] Hom?ri Odysseia.

Oxford: Pr. at the University Press, 1909. Tall 4to (29 cm, 11.5"). [4 (3 blank)], [227], [3 (blank)] ff. The aesthetic of the fine press movement of the 19th century influenced many non-small press publishers in the 20th century, and here we have => a university press producing a gorgeous limited edition of the Odyssey. Issued in only 225 copies on handmade paper, printed in black and red with wide side and bottom margins, the text is that of David Binning Monro's Oxford Press, 1896, printing. Horace Hart composed it using the Greek type that Robert Proctor designed based on the Greek type of the Complutem Bible, which was used "by arrangement with the owners of the type" (colophon). Proctor's type was cut in just one size — large — making it, in reality, useable only in fine press work and spectacular there.    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear. Publisher's quarter linen, light blue boards, paper label to spine. All edges untrimmed. Without the slipcase. Paper label a little darkened and rubbed, a few spots of discoloration to the linen, boards a little dusty; lower outer corner of front board with a small waterstain. Interior fresh. => A beautiful book.

n.p. 1909 - A unique manuscript (5" x 8-1/2") accomplished in a decorative calligraphic style with small illustrations by Anita Helen Parkhurst of poems presumably written by the author when he was 11 years old, seven years before his first commercially published book, BLOWN LEAVES of 1916, and presented to his parents at Christmas. Bound in black limp leather held together with a leather strap in a spiral fashion and with a holograph paper title label on the front cover. The contents consist of ten leaves of stiff brown paper stapled to the binding at the gutter. The title page includes author, title, the name of the calligrapher and illustrator, the dedication to Peattie's parents, and the date of 25 December 1909. The eleven poems include the title poem, Spring and Summer, Savior, We Die, Irish Drinking Song, Moon Rise, Sorrow, Mid Night and Dawn, Pompei, The Storm, and The Ruined City. While the poems are what one might expect of an 11 year old, it is interesting to note that several are concerned with themes relating to natural history, a fitting subject for the writer who would become known to many as America's most lyrical naturalist and whose books would include AN ALMANAC FOR MODERNS, IMMORTAL VILLAGE, A BOOK OF HOURS, THE ROAD OF A NATURALIST, JOURNEY INTO AMERICA, and A NATURAL HISTORY OF TREES. On the inside front cover is the large later bookplate of Donald Culross Peattie. Donald Culross Peattie (June 21, 1898 - November 16, 1964) was a U.S. botanist, naturalist, and author. He was described by Joseph Wood Krutch as "perhaps the most widely read of all contemporary American nature writers" during his heyday. Peattie has been called America’s most lyrical naturalist. He was essentially a poet, for in his writing he combined science with the spirit of poetry. His work reveals a strong appreciation for beauty and a sense of the unity of nature, considerable philosophic insight, and a concern for good prose. His nature writings are distinguished by a poetic and philosophical cast of mind and are scientifically scrupulous. His best known works are the two books (out of a planned trilogy) on North American trees which he wrote in the late 1940s and early '50s. AN ALMANAC FOR MODERNS, the day-to-day observations and reflections of a sensitive naturalist, was awarded the Gold Medal of the Limited Editions Club. His 1939 FLOWERING EARTH was named the best horticultural book of the year, and in 1940 received a silver medal from the Commonwealth Club of California. His autobiographical THE ROAD OF A NATURALIST was awarded a prize by Houghton Mifflin in 1941. Very Good and absolutely one of a kind [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Poesia. Rassegna internazionale diretta da F. T. Marinetti. Aprile - Maggio - Giugno - Luglio 1909. N. 3 - 4 - 5 - 6. Anno V

Illustrazioni in b.n. n.t. (Marinetti, I Nuovi Poeti Futuristi).

Eragny Press, London 1909 - One of the great works of the press, limited to 130 copies on Arches, of which this is number 54 for M. F. Imhoof Bloomer (printed). Exquisitely bound in publisher's original limp olive-green lambskin gilt, overall repeat design of carnation and scrolled foliage. Book is printed in red and black, wood-engraved title printed in green and gold, wood-engraved border and initials printed in gold and colors, wood-engraved illustrations and tailpieces printed in green, all by Esther and Lucien Pissarro after Lucien Pissarro. Lucien Pissarro's recollection of the production of this book and its importance in the development of the Eragny Press are recorded in Notes on the Eragny Press: "For lack of capital, I was not able to print the books I wanted to produce until the French began, at last, to take an interest in the revival of printing. Mr Roger Marx, who knew of my efforts, introduced me to Mr Rodrigues, the President of the Society of the 'Cent Bibliophiles' in Paris. The latter asked me to produce a book for them, giving me carte blanche with regard to text, illustrations, size, paper, etc. This gave me the opportunity I wanted and with a quiet mind as to cost, I set to work on the production of the Historie de Soliman . by Gérard de Nerval. For this book we used gold leaf in the printing of the initial letters. This gave us much trouble and we had to invent a technique to overcome the great difficulty of preventing the gold leaf from sticking to the wet hand-made paper, and after many attempts we were successful." The binding was executed to a design by Henri Marius-Michel and the art-nouveau style reflects the orientalist legend. A magnificent, fine copy of a high-point in book production.         Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. Rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald.

Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac.Hodder and Stoughton, New York and London. Hard Cover. Limited. [1909]. ONE OF ONLY 200 DELUXE NUMBERED COPIES FOR AMERICA. Large 4to Original vellum over boards pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Illustrated with 20 full-page mounted color plates by Edmund Dulac.Book Condition: Very Good +, silk ribbon tie is missing - bright, clean, no marks or tears. In the 'Rubaiyat' (short epigrammatic poems) of the medieval Persian poet, mathematician, and philosopher Omar Khayyam, Edward Fitzgerald saw an unflinching challenge to the illusions and consolations of mankind in every age. His version of Omar is neither a translation nor an independent poem; sceptical of divine providence and insistent on the pleasure of the passing moment, its 'Orientalism' offers FitzGerald a powerful and distinctive voice, in whose accents a whole Victorian generation comes to life. Although the poem's vision is bleak, it is conveyed in some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry - and some of the sharpest- edged. The poem sold no copies at all on its first appearance in 1859, yet when it was 'discovered' two years later its first admirers included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Swinburne, and Ruskin.
