Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1909-12. One crown with small chip, the top edge gilt slightly damaged, all else fine - a stunning set. Autograph Edition" SIGNED by Mrs. Ward 16 volumes. Illustrated. Bound in full tan crushed morocco, t.e.g, gilt spine titles and rules in the panels and on the bands, red morocco doblures with fancy gilt corner pieces, watered silk flyleaves, the upper and lower covers with sets of seven poppies formed from blue on-lays, each with long stems terminating in small gilt hearts with gilt pointelles between, the entire design inverted below, the entire design surrounded with stylized gilt rule, double rules at the edges The binding are quite possibly the work of Constance Karslake of the Guild of Women Binders. They are strikingly similar to the binding design on "The Centaur", illustrated on plate seven in "The Bindings of Tomorrow" by Eliot Anstruther; and the poppy tools are also strikingly similar to the tools used in a Hampstead Bindery binding in our possession which we attribute to her as well

        Early New York

New York: L.L. Poates Engraving Co., 1909. hardcover. Mac Coun, Townsend.. Light blue cloth dossier with five maps of historic New York. New York: L.L. Poates Engraving Co., 1909. Half Moon Edition. Dossier measures 8'' x 11''. Maps measure between 33.5'' x 8.75'', 51.75'' x 16.5'', 24'' x 17'', 52'' x 16.5'', and 24'' x 17''. This dossier includes 5 maps of early New York, printed in 1909. Each map notes points of interest in red ink with historical details and contemporary references. The first map, "The Hudson River (Cahohataten) at the time of its discovery by Henry Hudson (1609)" is an immaculate example of historical cartography. "The Island of Manhattan (Mannahtin) at the time of its discovery, showing its elevation, water courses, marshes, and shore line," includes contemporary streets and shore line for identification and is based on the early colonial surveys of Ratzer, Montresor, Knypthausen, Bradford, and Duyckinck as well as Viele's survey of 1867. The last three maps depict the growing city in 1653-1664 as New Amsterdam, in 1730 as an English colonial city, and in 1783 as a fortified city just after the Revolutionary War. Each map provides intricate details of the period and acts as an invaluable reference and charming novelty. Townsend Mac Coun was a map-maker and author who specialized in historic geography. His other titles include, "Historical-Geography Charts of Europe," "Historical-Geography Charts of the United States," and "The Holy Land in Geography and History.

I:XIV-148 p. II:VII-155 fols. Palau 52255. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

En Undersökning av Folkens Välstånd dess Natur och Orsaker. Översättning av D:r Emil Sommarin. 2 volumes.

Lund, C. W. K. Gleerups förlag, 1909 & 1911. 8vo. In one contemporary full green cloth binding with leather titel label with gilt lettering to spine. A very fine and clean copy. XVI,191, (4), 179 pp.. The exceedingly rare first edition of the first Swedish translation of Adam Smith's ground-breaking main work, the "Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations". Smaller parts of the book had previously been translated into Swedish (in 1800, 1804 and 1869), but the present translation is considered the first actual translation of the work (even though some parts have been excluded by translator Emil Sommarin, who based his translation the 5th English edition, the last edition to be supervised by Adam Smith himself). It is to this date the only Swedish translation of the work, which tells us a lot about the history of Swedish economics. Despite the comparatively late translation into Swedish, it still had a profound influence, not on economists since they were well aware of the original work in English, but upon politics and public opinion in general: "There are few things more striking to the modem student of the history of ideas in Sweden than the negative phenomenon that Sweden was almost entirely uninfluenced by this fact and thus remained almost unaffected by English economic thought during a period when its superiority was most evident. As far as I am acquainted with the Swedish economic discussion and our popular economic literature of the 1860's and 1870's, there is almost no trace of any influence from English writers. [...]Of Adam Smith we have still only one abbreviated translation of his famous work and that was published as late as during this century; and, as far as I know, nothing of Ricardo's or Malthus' exists in Swedish, nor do any of the major economic works of J.S. Mill." (Heckscher, A survey of economic thought in Sweden, 1875-1950).Translator Emil Sommarin (1874-1955) was a student of Knut Wicksell, arguably the most influential Swedish economist, and Sommarin succeeded Wicksell's professorship in national economics. Wicksell "came to know his classics very well and became and remained an admirer of Adam Smith. Around 1910 he also assisted his former student and successor as economics professor in Lund, Emil Sommarin, with the translation of WN, still the most complete we have in Sweden. In this connection he wrote to a friend in Uppsala, "It is almost unbelievable that we have been denied this masterpiece for 125 years and our economic policy is a result of the omission" (Cheng-Chung Lai, Adam Smith Across Nations, p. 384)

        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. Paperback. Very good. This book is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. In 1909, just a year after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced (80 percent sold domestically and 20 percent shipped for export), but given the fragility of the edition, few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a 100 year old cheap paperback. This copy is a wonderful exception. Moreover, it is clearly one of the 20 percent of copies shipped for export. The former owner acquired it from Australia and it bears a vintage small circular sticker on the front cover from a bookseller in Sydney, NSW. The front covers are remarkably bright and complete, with no losses or tears and only the slightest soiling. The front cover has a few trivial corner creases. The spine is even more remarkable, being entirely intact apart from trivial, fractional losses at the ends and a closed tear at the center between the "H" and "o" in "Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill". There are no vertical creases, which, along with the tight and square overall condition, indicates that this copy has never been read. The pulp paper contents are browned as inevitable, but are crisp and tight in the wrappers. This is among the very best copies we have ever seen and all the more remarkable for the fact that it is among the few survivors of those 20 percent designated for export. The book is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.8, Woods/ICS A12(b), Langworth p.85

My African Journey, the Canadian first edition

Toronto: William Briggs, 1909. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Here is a rare prize. This first and only Canadian issue of My African Journey is among the rarest English language first editions of Churchill's book-length works. We have seen only a precious few on the market over many years of collecting. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. It is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs allegedly taken by the author. Both the Canadian and British first editions are striking, with a vivid red binding and a pictorial front cover bearing a woodcut illustration of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros depicted in blue, grey, and black. This Canadian edition is distinguished by the publisher "BRIGGS" on the lower spine, in lieu of the British edition's "Hodder & Stoughton". This Canadian edition also bears a unique title page. As with the British edition, the red cloth spine of this Canadian proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the 61 photographs were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps. This Canadian edition is not only extravagantly rare, but also in very good condition. The red cloth binding retains bright covers, nicely rounded spine, and shows only the slightest lean. Spine presentation is quite respectable for the edition, only modestly sunned and still retaining clearly legible gilt and decent color. Wear is light, mostly confined to minor bumping at the corners and a bit of wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are bright with only light occasional internal spotting. All maps and illustrations are present, as is the protective tissue guard at the frontispiece, though we note that the page 30 and page 159 illustrations are loose, with a small loss to the blank margin of the page 159 illustration. We find no previous ownership marks. There is moderate spotting to the page edges and some dust soiling to the top edge. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.7, Woods/ICS A12(ac), Langworth p.85.

LETTERARI-ARTISTICI : (Alessi Rino, Altobelli Demos, Anile A., Arcari P., Baldani R., Beltramelli A., BERNASCONI UGO, Boutet E., CAPPA INNOCENZO, Cavacchioli E., Cenzato G., CIARLANTINI FRANCO, Civinini G., Coccia G., D'Ambra L., Della Sbarba S., Fabietti E., Franchi Anna, Giolli R., GIORGERI CONTRI COSIMO, GOTTA S., GOVONI CORRADO - racconto a puntate "Le Lucciole", Gray E.C., LUCINI G.P. con numerosi interventi, Manetti D., Martini F.M., Martoglio G., Motta Luigi - saggio sui Cascella, Nebbia Ugo, Nosari A., Ottolenghi R., Pirro R., Ragghianti A., Rivalta E., ROCCATAGLIATA CECCARDI C., Salucci A., Scarpelli F., SICILIANI LUIGI- con traduzioni di importanti poeti stranieri, Spellanzon C., TERESAH con tre poesie, VANNICOLA G., Vittori E., Zavataro R, ed altri .

1909. (GOBLE,WARWICK)illus. WATER BABIES by Charles Kingsley. London: Macmillan 1909. Featured here is the LIMITED EDITION OF THE BOOK IN A FULL MOROCCO BINDING HOUSED IN A LARGE PICTORIAL CLAMSHELL BOX WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR USED IN THE BOOK. The book is a thick quarto measuring 9" x 11 1/4", bound in a full blue morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The book spine is decorated in gilt with raised bands and the covers are heavily decorated with triple gilt rules and floral decorated corners. Inside the covers there are gilt dentelles and silk doublures (silk lining). The book is the magnificent DELUXE EDITION, LIMITED TO ONLY 260 COPIES printed on hand-made paper and illustrated by Goble with 32 mounted color plates with lettered tissue guards. The book is housed in a velvet lined cradle. On the opposite side of the box is a special insert holding the original watercolor signed by Goble that appears as a full page color plate on page 32 of the book. The actual image measures 13 1/2" wide x 9 1/4" high and is captioned "Play by me, bathe in me mother and child". It is a beach scene with the mother and the water baby reclining on the sand, with the ocean, rocks and beach related flora surrounding them. This image is duplicated in gilt on the cover of the book and also on the cover of the box. The box is 13 1/2" wide x 17 3/4" high with the backstrip rounded to simulate the spine of a book with extensive gilt decorations and raised bands. Goble's Water Babies is arguably the best edition of this classic story. In his book "Early Children's Books" (p.80), Eric Quayle comments on all the various editions of Water Babies and adds about Goble's edition: "None of these in either artistic or financial terms approaches the sumptuous edition of 1909." Nice copies of the limited edition are rare, an offering like this is a once in a lifetime copy.
