Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of Africa in the British Museum (Natural History).

1909. London, printed by order of the Trustees, 1909-1916. 4 volumes. Royal 8vo (273 x 185mm). pp. xi, 373, with 270 figures; xii, 529 with 382 figures; xii, 526, with 351 figures; xxvii, 392 with 195 figures. Publisher's gilt cloth [Together with:] 351 original copper engraved blocks, all representing fishes, for the book. An interesting collection of 351 of the original copper engraved blocks (of 1198), all well preserved, of this important treatise on the fishes of Africa. All copper engravings are mounted on oakwood and have the volume number and plate number inscribed at the back. Boulenger's publication is the first major work on the fresh water fishes of Africa and together with a large collection of the original blocks, serving for the illustrations, this represents a unique occasion for any naturalist studying the ichthyological fauna of Africa. "The past decade has been productive of an enormous increase in our knowledge of the Fresh-water Fishes of Africa. The explorations of the Congo and the Nile, undertaken at considerable expense... and of the great lakes of Central Africa, initiated in this country have resulted in the discovery and description of an unexpectedly large number of generic and specific forms, types of most of which are deposited in the Natural History Museum" (From the Introduction). George Albert Boulenger (1858-1937) was a Belgian-British zoologist who worked at the British Museum. He was famous for his monographs on amphibians, lizards and other reptiles and fishes as well as his monographs on the fishes of Africa. "Boulenger's contemporaries have noted his incredible memory for specimens, species descriptions, and for the associated literature, which was the key to the great speed at which he worked. He could read six languages well and converse in most of them, and wrote with equal facility, but his manuscripts were never typed and went straight to the typesetter in longhand. Boulenger was a tireless worker with strict self discipline, and he also had great charm: a distinguished figure in the London scientific establishment and a proper Victorian gentleman" (Adler p. 55)..

Hayn und Gotendorf schwärmen a.a.O.: "... in entzückender Ausstattung hergestellt. *

        Liberalism and the Social Problem

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a premium first edition for a discerning collector. This is Churchill's third book of speeches from his period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. Churchill's speeches in this volume address a broad range of social issues still topical today, with the young Churchill trying to chart a progressive course between reactionary conservatism and radical socialism. There were only 3,500 first printing copies issued. The first edition proved a bit fragile, with dark red smooth cloth prone to fading and wear. Here is a near-fine, extremely clean copy. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and remarkably little wear. The spine remains nicely rounded with only a trivial hint of sunning, bright gilt, and minor wrinkling at the head and tail. The contents are exceptionally clean and bright. Faint spotting is confined to the pastedowns, with both the balance of the contents and the page edges appearing spot-free. Previous ownership marks are confined to a small London bookseller sticker affixed to the front pastedown and four numbers - "4515" neatly and discretely printed in faded ink at the upper right ffep corner. The top edge is lightly dust soiled with the fore edge and untrimmed bottom edge remaining clean. The book is accompanied by a custom built clamshell preservation case in full red leather. The case features a rounded spine with raised bands and gilt rules on both spine and covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A29.1.a, Woods/ICS A15(a), Langworth p.92.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. Paperback. Very good. This book is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. In 1909, just a year after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced (80 percent sold domestically and 20 percent shipped for export), but given the fragility of the edition, few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a 100 year old cheap paperback. This copy is a wonderful exception. Moreover, it is clearly one of the 20 percent of copies shipped for export. The former owner acquired it from Australia and it bears a vintage small circular sticker on the front cover from a bookseller in Sydney, NSW. The front covers are remarkably bright and complete, with no losses or tears and only the slightest soiling. The front cover has a few trivial corner creases. The spine is even more remarkable, being entirely intact apart from trivial, fractional losses at the ends and a closed tear at the center between the "H" and "o" in "Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill". There are no vertical creases, which, along with the tight and square overall condition, indicates that this copy has never been read. The pulp paper contents are browned as inevitable, but are crisp and tight in the wrappers. This is among the very best copies we have ever seen and all the more remarkable for the fact that it is among the few survivors of those 20 percent designated for export. The book is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.8, Woods/ICS A12(b), Langworth p.85

- Cartonnage polychrome noir, rouge & or. Unica historique !
