        Emma

London & New York: J. M. Dent & Co. & E. P. Dutton, 1909. London & New York: J. M. Dent & Co. & E. P. Dutton,, 1909. With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo. Original full vellum, spine and front boards lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt to spine and front board, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour frontispiece, decorated title-page and 22 other coloured plates after watercolour drawings by C. E. Brock. A fine, bright copy, with the boards bowed as usual. A lovely, fresh copy in the deluxe vellum binding, published as part of the "Series of English Idylls" by J. M. Dent & Co. The illustrations demonstrate Brock's mastery in using his ink and watercolour medium to convey simultaneously the gentle graces and the sharp ironies of Austen's world. The costume and interior decor depicted is reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

Primera Parte de la Chronica Augustiniana de Mechoacan

Mexico 1909 - Description: 509+ix pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 6 1/2") bound in half leather with raised spine bands and marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine. Published under the direction of Bishop Plancarte y Navarrete, with a brief bibliographical note by Nicolas Leon. From the library of George Foster. Second edition. Juan González de la Puente, born a Spaniard in 1580, undertook to chronicle the Augustinians in Michoacán and to write the lives of nine "apostolic varones". Part 1 of his Chronica appeared not long after its composition about 1623. In 1630 the chapter meeting of his province in Tiripitio, Michoacán, authorized him to publish the second part, but no trace of part 2 has to date been uncovered. In the extant manuscript, he wrote the biographies of the nine friars, scattered over three books. They are Juan Bautista de Moya, Juan de Median Rincon, Diego de Chaves, Sebastian de Trasierra, Francisco de Acosta, Juan de Montalvo, Francisco Lopez, Pedro de Vera and Diego de Villarubia. As a matter of fact, none of these belonged to the Michoacán province, but were from Santisimo Nombre in Mexico City; but as they had been active in Michoacán, before the latter was an officially established province, Puente included them. Book 1 contains no lives of these men, but instead is devoted to a wide range of topics. Among them is the discovery of the New World, the conquest of Mexico, and Augustinian activities in Mexico after arrival, as well as in Persia and the Orient. Book2 contains biographies of the first five missionaries and recounts, in entire chapters, Augustinian efforts among the Indians of Michoacán as well as to missions in China and Japan. The remaining four missionaries appear in book 3, which completes the account (to his times) of the Augustinian ministry to the Tarascans. At the edge of the text Puente indicates his main sources. His ideas are easy to follow, but occasionally he lapses into a diffuse style, especially when extolling the virtues of his brethren. He also has a predilection for the unusual and the extraordinary. His Choronica of Michoacán appeared in the same year (1624) as Grijalva's of Mexico, although the latter province had been founded some 67 years earlier. A relative rare work, the 1624 edition was this reissue . Condition: Spine sunned, some shelf wear and fore edge wear, points rubbed, pages age toned, George Foster's stamp to title and date of acquire on front else about very good.         Liberalism and the Social Problem, Prime Minister Clement Atlee's personal copy

London: Hodder and Stoughton, Ltd., 1909. London: Hodder and Stoughton, Ltd., 1909. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. Very good plus. This important first edition of Liberalism and the Social Problem was Prime Minister Clement Attlee's personal copy and comes to us from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. Clement Richard Attlee (1883-1967) was the socialist Labour leader who famously replaced Churchill as Prime Minister in 1945 and whom Churchill would in turn defeat in 1951. Liberalism and the Social Problem is Churchill's third book of speeches (following Mr. Brodrick's Army and For Free Trade) and dates from his period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. It is especially interesting that this particular book - exemplar of the young, Liberal Churchill's time as a social reformer - bears the bookplate of the socialist Labour leader who would defeat Conservative Prime Minister Churchill 36 years after this book was published. Though they were contemporaries in age, Attlee and Churchill took different paths to politics. Churchill chose and excelled at politics while still in his twenties and was first elected to Parliament in 1900. By contrast, Attlee drifted, graduating Oxford before finding early careers first in the law and then in social work, which initially drew him to left-leaning politics. During the First World War, Attlee served with distinction, progressing to Captain and then to Major and seeing action twice at Gallipoli. Attlee first stood for Parliament as Labour candidate for Limehouse in 1919 and was elected in 1922. He held the seat until 1950. Attlee assumed a leadership role with his electorally crippled party in 1931 and became Labour Leader in 1935. He would serve in Churchill's wartime coalition government as Deputy Prime Minister (1942-1945). The Second World War proved transformative for Attlee's Labour Party, and hence for its leader as well (more so than the other way around, as Labour arguably had more decisive wartime figures than Attlee). As the war drew toward conclusion, the British population was hungry for reform and tired of austerity. The General Election of July 1945 brought victory for Labour and the premiership for Attlee. During Attlee's premiership (1945-1951) "Attlee governments combined a forthright international position, backed by force, with an equally self-confident domestic policy which combined the difficult transition from a war to a peacetime economy with radical developments in social welfare." (ODNB) Economic conditions, key Labour resignations, and other factors diminished Labour's electoral fortunes by the end of the decade. Elections of February 1950 reduced Labour's majority to five seats and saw Attlee change his own constituency. The General Election of 1951 saw the Conservatives return to majority and Churchill to 10 Downing Street. Attlee continued as party leader until May 1955, entering the House of Lords as Earl Attlee later that year. This 1909 first edition, first printing is a very good copy. The red cloth binding remains tight with modest wear to extremities, some small moisture spots to the rear cover, and typical spine toning. The contents remain unusually crisp and bright with trivial spotting confined to the front and rear pastedown and ffep. Attlee's distinctive bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. A different name - which appears old - is inked to the upper first free endpaper. Whether this name predates Attlee's acquisition of the book is unknown. The book was likely donated at one time, evidenced by a "Sold By Order" ink stamp at the bottom of the copyright page that overlays a second ink stamp reading "University of York Library." The final free endpaper has been removed, quite possibly during de-accession. Of note, the dedication, preface, and contents pages are .25 inch shorter at the bottom than the balance of the text block, with no visible evidence to contradict that they were originally bound thus.         Castes and Tribes of Southern India

Madras: Government Press, 1909. Madras: Government Press,, 1909. 7 volumes octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spines and upper boards. Profusely illustrated from photographs. A little rubbed, the cloth variably spotted, endpapers browned, as also the text, a few plates coming loose, but overall a very good set. First edition. Thurston was superintendent of the Madras Government Museum from 1885-1908, before becoming the superintendent of ethnography for the Madras Presidency. The present work represents the findings of the anthropometric survey carried out by Thurston and his assistant Kadambi Rangachari under the aegis of the Ethnographic Survey of India, a body headed Sir Herbert Hope Risley. Risley's career has been described as "the apotheosis of pseudo-scientific racism", but it is also widely accepted that "his work completely revolutionized the native Indian view of ethnological inquiry" (ODNB), in a recent article in The Hindu, Raja Sekhar Vundru argues that "The British colonial project of codification of various castes and tribes of India provided an extraordinary input to the understanding of the diversity in Indian society" (24 January 2010). At the time the reviewer in Nature described the work as a "monumental record ... which will long retain its value as an example of outdoor investigation, and will remain a veritable mine of information, which will be of value".
