London:: George G. Harrup,, ND [1909].. First Edition. goat skin. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy. Octavo (17.5 x 12 cm). Brown Goat skin, bound 'in the style of' the Guild of Women Binders with flat spine, Arts & Crafts lettering stamped in gilt to front board and spine, blind-embossed ornament of double panel with single stylized rose surrounded by leaves in each corner of front and rear boards and spine. A slight bit of toning and one small (1 cm) ink mark on front board otherwise a very pretty copy. Former owners' faded signature, location and date (1912) on front paste-down. TEG, fore-edge and foot untrimmed. 265 pp. engraved frontispiece. Title-page printed in black and red. Printed by Ballantyne and Co., Limited, Covent Garden, London. Number Five in The Harrap Library of classical literature and essays. This edition was printed just after the disbanding the the Guild of Women Binders- yet clearly the binding design is one of understated elegance and was likely inspired by the refined technique of gilt and blind-embossed tooling perfected and executed by the GWB; particularly the designs of Constance Karslake.         Castes and Tribes of Southern India

Madras: Government Press, 1909. Madras: Government Press,, 1909. 7 volumes octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spines and upper boards. Profusely illustrated from photographs. A little rubbed, the cloth variably spotted, endpapers browned, as also the text, a few plates coming loose, but overall a very good set. First edition. Thurston was superintendent of the Madras Government Museum from 1885-1908, before becoming the superintendent of ethnography for the Madras Presidency. The present work represents the findings of the anthropometric survey carried out by Thurston and his assistant Kadambi Rangachari under the aegis of the Ethnographic Survey of India, a body headed Sir Herbert Hope Risley. Risley's career has been described as "the apotheosis of pseudo-scientific racism", but it is also widely accepted that "his work completely revolutionized the native Indian view of ethnological inquiry" (ODNB), in a recent article in The Hindu, Raja Sekhar Vundru argues that "The British colonial project of codification of various castes and tribes of India provided an extraordinary input to the understanding of the diversity in Indian society" (24 January 2010). At the time the reviewer in Nature described the work as a "monumental record ... which will long retain its value as an example of outdoor investigation, and will remain a veritable mine of information, which will be of value".

This is Goble's first gift book and what a triumph it is. One of the most beautiful versions of Kingsley's tale ever to have been produced. A contemporary review said, "Goble in his thirty-two beautiful colour plates . . . delights us. He has given us sand and sea, fish and fairies which captivate us at once; for delicacy of colouring and grace of line he has bettered his best, and the volume is a continuous pleasure." R. Radclyffe 1908. Although Radclyffe was not mentioned by name on the title page the preface is obviously by him and he was at least co-author of the book. We can not find any mention of this anywhere else. Page 89 also has in initialed change to the text. A great family association copy with interesting inscription..
