        Kowa The Mysterious.

London, Everett and Co. 1909 - First edition. 8vo. 320pp. Publisher's dark green cloth titled in gilt to spine and front board, decorated in black. Gilt sharp and clear, cloth bright and strong. Minor edgewear, very light bumping to head of spine. Internally clean, minor spotting to prelims. A near fine piece of xenophobia, dealing as it does with a mysterious city of vengeful Chinese under San Francisco plotting the overthrow of its benevolent white populace. Basically makes Sax Rohmer sound like the cultural attache to Beijing in comparison. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autograph Manuscript Signed

This well-known French poet, novelist and playwright was elected member of the Academie francaise in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS, 20pp (rectos only). 8" X 10 3/4", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1890]. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good, showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean," penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft, for it contains crossouts, insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel, for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title, one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress, for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further, the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909," although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf, Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy further research.

(DBE) Deutsch [Attributes: First Edition]

The Heart of the Antarctic , Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909

London: William Heinemann, 1909. Two volumes, large octavo, frontispiece portrait, extensively illustrated; some spotting affecting first few leaves, silver vignettes on upper boards slightly rubbed, spines sunned, but an excellent copy in the original navy-blue pictorial cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut. First edition of the famous Antarctic account, a cornerstone of any Antarctic collection. A veteran of Scott's expedition of 1901-04, Shackleton determined to mount the first attempt on the South Pole. His expedition of 1907-09 came within ninety-seven miles of reaching its goal before turning back so as not to endanger the lives of the party. Their retreat homeward was a desperate march to reach food before they starved; miraculously all men survived. Despite not achieving their primary objective, they were the first to reach the South Magnetic Pole, and a detailed account of this achievement by Professor T.W. Edgeworth David is present here.

The Interpretation of the Atom.London: John Murray, 1932. First edition.

Nobel laureate Frederick Soddy's own heavily annotated copy with 136 of its 188 text leaves bearing Soddy's annotations. Important association copy of this influential book, which superseded his classic <i>Interpretation of Radium</i> (1909; 4th ed. 1922). It deals with developments in radioactivity and atomic chemistry from the turn of the century to the time of writing. Only one edition of <i>The Interpretation of the Atom</i> ever appeared in print. However, this copy shows that Soddy at one time intended to publish an updated edition covering advances in the field up to 1940, with an appendix touching on the events leading up to the detonation of the atomic bomb in 1945. Evidently, Soddy abandoned his plan to publish the revision, thus leaving unpublished the thousands of words of revisions and additions recorded in this volume. Later he incorporated the gist of his revisions into his <i>Story of Atomic Energy</i> (1949), which, according to its preface, replaces both the 1909 and 1932 works. Soddy collaborated with Rutherford in the crucial alpha-ray experiments that led to their revolutionary disintegration theory of radioactivity (1901-3). He was the first to recognize that the chemically identical atoms of different atomic weights discovered by radioactivity researchers were all varieties of the same chemical element, and introduced the term 'isotope' to describe this phenomenon. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his investigations into the origin and nature of isotopes, which paralleled Bohr's physical investigations in providing crucial evidence for the nuclear origins of alpha- and beta-decay. <i>Provenance:</i>It is likely that this revised copy of <i>The Interpretation of the Atom</i> was once owned by Soddy's friend Muriel Howorth, to whom he gave all of his papers and bequeathed the copyrights of his published works. Howorth edited the first (and only published) volume of Soddy's memoirs, and also wrote <i>Pioneer Research on the Atom. Rutherford and Soddy, in a glorious chapter of science.</i> <i>The Life Story of Frederick Soddy</i> (1958), which includes a biography of Soddy.<br/> <br/>. 8vo (205 x 144 mm), pp xviii [2], 355 with 20 plates, folding table, text illustrations. With 136 of its 188 text leaves bearing Soddy's annotations or copy-editing symbols, made either in manuscript or on numerous typewritten sheets which have been tipped-in. All of the plates have been edited by Soddy, some with figures removed, and there is an added frontispiece with two portraits of John Dalton. A revised periodic table is tipped in at the end and a typed "Instructions to the Printer" is tipped in at the front. Original cloth. Clamshell case

&#39;When He Goes Back to Town&#39;, ink drawing signed "Ida S. Rentoul" lower centre

Original ink drawing measuring 420 x 280 mm., titled and signed "Ida S. Rentoul"; in excellent condition, mounted and framed. Fine drawing by the pre-eminent Australian children&#39;s book illustrator. An early, large and highly detailed original drawing by Ida Sherbourne Rentoul (later Outhwaite) showcasing her ability as the foremost Australian children&#39;s illustrator of her era. This intricate work is signed in the artist&#39;s maiden name, indicating it was completed prior to her marriage to Arthur Grenbry Outhwaite in December of 1909. Indeed, the work has an endearing romantic theme, with a maiden in a forest grove separated from her lover who sits at his desk in town writing a flurry of love letters. It is possible that Ida drew this beautiful work to express her courtship with Grenbry Outhwaite who pursued a successful business career in Melbourne in the decade prior to their marriage. Ida Rentoul Outhwaite started her career as a teenager and over a lifetime built a considerable exhibition profile with at least eighteen one-woman exhibitions. She became, and arguably still is, the &#39;queen of fairy illustration&#39; and Australia&#39;s most internationally renowned children&#39;s book illustrator. This original work is fresh and vibrant, reminiscent of the energy that characterises her first two publications Mollie&#39;s Bunyip and Mollie&#39;s Staircase, published in 1904 and 1906 respectively. The personal romantic theme demonstrates Rentoul&#39;s remarkable ability as an illustrator who is perhaps more widely known for the fantasy world she created for children. Ida did not undergo a formal artistic education; rather her talent had grown from childhood years with the encouragement of her parents. Her father, the Reverend John Lawrence Rentoul explained Ida&#39;s lack of formal training, commenting in a manuscript letter that &#39;the highest judges advised against any such "gallery" influences, thinking her artistic quality so unique and fine that it must not be cramped by conventional rules&#39;. The drawing was gifted by the artist to Chrissie Robertson circa 1912 and has remained in the family until recent times. It is an outstanding example of Ida&#39;s early period as a fledging artist and is executed with painstaking finesse and detail.

        HEURES, LES (THE HOURS) (1909)

France 1909 - Vintage original 42 x 57" (108 x 146 cm.) poster, France. Alice Tissot, Renee Carl, Christiane Mandelys, Maurice Vinot, dir: Louis Feuillade; Societe des Etablissments L. Gaumont. Beautiful poster from the French Art Nouveau period. So rare is this style art in film posters as this was the infancy of the motion picture. This was an episodic film, with sequences representing different times of the day. Morning, noon and eve art the three tableaus represented on this poster. Feuillade was perhaps the most prolific film director of all time, with more than 700 titles to his credit. In 1907 he was appointed artistic director of Gaumont. He is definitely one of the fathers of the art and technique of motion pictures. One of the pioneers, famous for his great crime serials JUDEX and LES VAMPIRES. On linen, there is some very minor staining at extreme top edge, NEAR FINE.
