Title printed in red and black.Original green cloth with front cover pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and spine. A very fine copy.“The next important task I undertook, was the illustration of an edition of Rudyard Kipling’s A Song of the English to be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the year 1908. It became necessary for me to meet the author and discuss the proposed book with him. For this purpose, I travelled down to Burwash where he lived at that time. This was an excursion I shall always remember. I was met at Heathfield and journeyed thence in a motor-car. There were few cars on the road in those days and this in itself was a joyful experience as we drove through the pleasant Sussex lanes. Bateman’s, the house at Burwash, where Rudyard Kipling lived, was a fine old building with stone mullioned windows. It was in the midst of wind-blown Sussex country. There was a faint smell of the sea in the air wafted across the few miles of country from the shore where the Coastwise lights of England watch the ships of England go. It was a fitting setting in which to find the author of A Song of the English. He met and entertained me with a quiet affability, which speedily removed the shyness I felt at first in his presence. Before long I was quite at home with him. His own knowledge of illustration gave him an appreciation of the artist’s point of view. While making suggestions, he realized that the illustrator must have as free a hand as possible. His sympathetic understanding of my part in the undertaking made me feel that I was consulting with a brother artist. I spent a happy and for me a helpful day. It was a great inspiration for the work I had in hand to be in such close association with the author’s interesting personality. I am always glad to remember that he was satisfied with my illustrations to his book.” (W. Heath Robinson, My Line of Life. pp.126-127)“This poem originally appeared in The English Illustrated Magazine, May, 1893, prior to its inclusion in The Seven Seas, 1896” (Martindell).Beare 61b. Lewis, p. 215. Livingston 321. Martindell 133. Stewart 152*.

Trans-Himalaya: Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet. Two Volumes

New York:: MacMillan,, 1909. . Original two volume set in maroon cloth boards with a Tibetan male figure stamped in gold on the front cover. A third volume was published later as a supplement. From 1905-1908, Hedin despite British and Tibetan opposition to his plans, managed to sneak into Tibet, and explored extensively in its southern and western regions. Hedin claimed the discovery of a "previously unknown" major mountain system, the "Trans-Himalaya," and the sources of the major S. Asian rivers, although these claims were then disputed. He explored extensively on and around Lake Manasarovar. Not by his own choice, spent significant time in Shigatse, where he interacted with the Panchen Lama. Hedin had a phenomenal memory and his books, with their vivid details, are still fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in Asian cultures..

'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31.         Juvisy - Paris De Lambert sur biplan Wright-Ariel Magneto Lavalette Eisemann

Paris.: Mabileau & Co.. Copyright 1909.. Color lithograph, matted, visible image approximately 33 x 14 inches. The lithograph was matted and framed in the 1980s, but will be removed from the frame for delivery. Visible image is very good; however, based on other prints framed at the same time and place, there is a toned line on the print along the mat window edge and brown adhesive paper tape along the edges of the sheet where the print was attached to the backing. The verso of the print is browned from the wood backing that was used in the frame. The lithograph could be deacidified and the tape removed; however as it stands it would display very well with the light brown line from matburn either covered or used as an accent line around the image. 'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31. Ernest Montaut and, after his death, his wife, produced posters whose subject matter reflects the era's fascination with speed, on land and in the air. The posters were elaborately produced employing a combination of color lithography and handcoloring using the pochoir (stencil) process. This image, of a biplane flying over Paris, France, is presented in an unusual vertical format. .
