Autograph Manuscript Signed

. This well-known French poet, novelist and playwright was elected member of the Academie francaise in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS, 20pp (rectos only). 8" X 10 3/4", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1890]. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good, showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean," penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft, for it contains crossouts, insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel, for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title, one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress, for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further, the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909," although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf, Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy further research.

This book was used by a young woman, Elizabeth M. Gibson of Webster Groves Missouri, just like the author intended. The book is not a novel, but rather a journal-scrapbook, and about fifty of its pages are filled with very legible entries, newspaper clippings, letters, billhead, photograph, and even a hand-drawn invitation featuring an Alice and Wonderland Mad Hatter's Tea Party with the White Rabbit. Tight binding; front hinge just starting to give. Clean pages; front free endpaper has a corner crease with corresponding ghosting to the following leaf. The protective frontispiece tissue has some foxing. Minor wear to cover.

Scarce with original dust jacket. BAL 3509 ; Mark Twain's interest in the "Shakespeare question", was reignited in 1908 when he read The Shakespeare Problem Restated. Twain was intrigued by Greenwood's argument that, while there is no evidence that Shakespeare the actor had any familiarity with the law, the author of the plays must have been a lawyer. Liberalism and the Social Problem

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1909 - This is Churchill's third book of speeches from his period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. Churchill's speeches in this volume address a broad range of social issues still topical today, with the young Churchill trying to chart a progressive course between reactionary conservatism and radical socialism. There were only 3,500 first printing copies issued. The first edition proved a bit fragile, with dark red cloth boards prone to fading and wear. Here is the British first edition, first printing in very good condition. The binding is clean, tight, and square, retaining a nicely rounded spine. The spine is only slightly sunned, retaining good color and bright gilt and showing only modest wrinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners show just a few small bumps and fractional wear. The contents are excellent - bright, crisp, and clean with no previous ownership marks. Very light spotting is confined to the endpapers and page edges. John Guille Millais (24 March 1865 - 24 March 1931), known as "Johnny" Millais, was an English artist, naturalist, gardener and travel writer who specialised in wildlife and flower portraiture. He travelled extensively around the world in the late Victorian period detailing wildlife often for the first time. He is noted for illustrations that are of a particularly exact nature. Millais is one of the most respected of British ornithologists and bird artists producing between 1890 and 1914 a series of books on birds and other natural history subjects. In the study of ornithology he was renowned for his portraiture of wildfowl and game birds, the subjects of his three most famous works: Natural History of British Feeding Ducks;British Diving Ducks and British Game Birds. They rank amongst some of the finest work on wildfowl ever published. Each bird receives individual treatment in text and detailed exact chromolithographs, some of which are by his friend and pre-eminent bird artist of the day Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935). Each species is represented by two or three individuals on a plate drawn in attitudes of feeding, resting and courtship. The books are lavish and with just 400 to 600 original editions published are now prized as examples of a certain type of High Victorian grandeur. Millais' skills are essentially Victorian, as private wealth allowed him to indulge on a grand scale his passions. He was undoubtedly tenacious. His son Raoul Millais spoke of him as an "astonishing man and his power of concentration was such that once he took up a subject he never left it until he knew more about it than anyone in the World". This tenacity to get a job done to the best of abilities was never better illustrated in his preparations for Mammals of Great Britain and Ireland (1904) where he spent months with the whaling fleet in the Atlantic in order to study first hand a group of mammals that had hitherto received little attention. The work which appeared in a limited print run in 1904 also contains illustrations and chromolithographs by George Edward Lodge (1860-1954) and Archibald Thorburn. He also wrote biographies of his father John Everett Millais and Frederick Courtney Selous. In addition there were important authoritative works on rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias and also a number of sculptures of birds including one of fighting game birds now owned by the Horsham Museum. Paris.. No date. 1909.. Color lithograph, matted, visible image approximately 32 1/2 x 15 inches. The lithograph was matted and framed in the 1980s, but will be removed from the frame for delivery. Visible image has 9 small foxing spots in the image; print has not been examined outside the frame, but based on other prints framed at the same time and place, there is a toned line on the print along the mat window edge and brown adhesive paper tape along the edges of the sheet where the print was attached to the backing. The verso of the print is browned from the wood backing that was used in the frame. The lithograph could be deacidified and the tape removed; however as it stands it would display very well with the light brown line from matburn either covered or used as an accent line around the image. A particularly striking image of a Zeppelin flying over what is likely the Rhine river, complete with a castle in the cliffs and storks flying. Ernest Montaut (1879-1909) and his atelier produced a series of striking lithographic posters documenting the excitement engendered by new developments at the turn of the twentieth century: automobiles, planes and dirigibles. .

        Raum und Zeit (pp.4-9).

. Verh. Ges. Naturf. Ärzte, 80/2.T./1.Hälfte. Naturwissenschaftliche Abteilung. - Vers. Cöln. - Leipzig, F.C.W.Vogel, 1909, 8°, X, (2), 218 pp., mit 28 Abb., orig. Broschur; unaufgeschnittenes, frisches Exemplar im feinen Schuber.. Erstdruck dieses am 21. September 1908 gehaltenen Vortrages, gehalten bei der "80. Versammlung zu Cöln, 20.-26. September 1908". - FIRST EDITION of Minkowski's explanation of the fourth dimension, a critical bridge between Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. - "In "'Space and Time', read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few months before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific (1905) to its general form (1916). Minkowski's space-time hypothesis was in effect a restatement of Einstein's basic principle in a form that greatly enhanced its plausibility and also introduced important new developments. Hitherto natural phenomena had been thought to occur in a space of three dimensions and to flow uniformly through time. Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time itself is a dimension, comparable to length, breadth, and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions. This strongly reinforced Einstein's objections to absolute concepts and supported his view of the relativity of events in nature" PMM - - PMM 401; Honeyman, Scientific Books 2231; Poggendorff V, 862; DSB IX, 414; Norman 1514.

Columbia: E. W. Stephens Publishing Company, 1909., 1909. First edition. 8vo. Original blue cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, 181 pp., frontis. [portrait], illustrated, plates, portraits. William Walker was born in Nashville, Tennessee in May, 1824, and died in Trujillo, Honduras on Sept. 12, 1860. Walker was something of an adventurer and at the same time a persuasive leader. James Carson Jamison was Captain of Company D, First Light Infantry, Army of the Republic of Nicaragua, at the time Walker was induced by American speculators to interfere in the internal problems in that country, ostensibly in aid of the Democratic party there. He landed in Nicaragua with a small force of men and lost the battle of Rivas, but he was quickly reinforced with 170 native soldiers, and they routed the Nicaraguan Army at La Virgen, and eventually took possession of Grenada. By treaty with General Corral, the opposing leader, Walker was made secretary of war and commander-in-chief of Nicaragua. Soon thereafter recruits arrived from the U. S. in March, 1856, and Walker had a force of 1,200 men at his command. He charged General Corral with conspiracy, presided over his court-martial for his trial, and sentenced him to be shot on Nov. 8, 1855. Walker eventually became president and through a series of arbitrary acts on his part soon provoked an insurrection, which was supported by several surrounding states and private business interests. He eventually survived Nicaragua, and through political efforts was acquitted of all charges against him. Eventually he was tried by court-martial by the Honduran authorities, found guilty, and shot on Sept. 12, 1860. Howes J56 says, "Best eye-witness account of Walker's bid for empire, by one of his most dependable officers." Former owner's neat book plate and their ownership signature, lightly rubbed at spine ends and the corners, else a near fine copy of a rare book. HOWES J56. GRAFF 2195. COWAN p.309. RADER 2073.
