The Isolation of an Ion, a Precision Measurement of its Charge, and the Correction of Stokes's Law

New York: Physical Review. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT. Wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY RARE OFFPRINT, of Millikan's first comprehensive account of his famous oil-drop experiment to determine the value of electron charge; consequently providing proof for the quantization of electric charge. "In 1909 Millikan started on a project that was to win for him the 1923 Nobel Prize for physics -- the determination of the electric charge of an electron. His apparatus consisted of two horizontal plates that could be made to take opposite charges. Between the plates he introduced a fine spray of oil drops whose mass could be determined by measuring their fall under the influence of gravity and against the resistance of the air. When the air was ionized by x-rays and the plates charged, then an oil drop that had collected a charge would be either repelled from or attracted to the plates depending on whether it had collected a positive or negative charge. By measuring the change in the rate of fall and knowing the intensity of the electric field Millikan was able to calculate the charges on the oil drops. After taking many careful measurements he was able to come to the important conclusion that the charge was always a simple multiple of the same basic unit..." (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). "For Millikan, and for most of the physics community, these results established the quantization of charge. The value that Millikan found in 1911 for the fundamental unit of charge, the charge on the electron, was 4.891 x 10(-10) esu" (Allan Franklin, Selectivity and Discord: Two Problems of Experiment). In his later 1913 paper, Millikan refined the number to 4.774 +/- 0.009 x 10(-10) esu, "a figure whose accuracy was not improved until 1928" (ibid.). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "First conclusive measurement of the charge of the electron. Nobel Prize to R.A. Millikan awarded in 1923 'for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photo-electric effect'." Note: A short preliminary report of Millikan's work was published the previous year in Science, vol. 32, with the same title. OFFPRINT FROM: Physical Review, vol. XXXII, No. 4, April 1911, pp. 349-397. Octavo, early (not original) wrappers; the original wrappers are lacking. A touch of nearly invisible dampstaining evident at the bottom margin of some leaves. RARE: We know only of the Plotnick copy of the offprint that has been on the market.

        Liberalism and the Social Problem

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1909. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior, collector grade copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchill's third book of speeches (following Mr. Brodrick's Army and For Free Trade). Liberalism and the Social Problem dates from Churchill's period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1909, when Liberalism and the Social Problem was published, Churchill had just been promoted to a Cabinet position. His 21 speeches in this volume address a broad range of social issues still topical today, with the young Churchill trying to chart a progressive course between reactionary conservatism and radical socialism. Churchill would remain a member of the Liberal Party until their ruinous electoral defeat in the 1922 General Election. Churchill rejoined the Conservatives in 1924. The British first edition is bound in a deep red cloth stamped in gilt on the spine and bearing Churchill's gilt-stamped facsimile signature on the front cover. The binding is attractive, but proved fragile, the smooth, thin cloth susceptible to wear and the spine quite susceptible to toning and dulling. This copy is scarce thus, in near fine condition, superior to nearly all copies we encounter. The cloth binding remains beautifully square, clean, and tight. The spine remains nicely rounded and the gilt strong, with only very slight sunning of the red color, which remains bright. Wear is trivial, primarily confined to wrinkling at the spine ends and tiny bumps to the lower corners. The contents are equally noteworthy, bright for the edition with a crisp feel. The book seems unread. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting is very light, confined to pastedowns, page edges, and occasional intrusions to inner page margins, mostly in the first and final leaves. About as good a copy as we see without a dust jacket, and we know of only two jacketed examples. The book is protected within a stout, dark red cloth slipcase with rounded, leather-trimmed opening.         Mission officielle commanditée par le Ministère de l'Instruction Publique pour un voyage d'étude en Amérique latine (1909-1913).

      - Unpublished, 1909-1913. 266 framed glass positives (including colour positives), 9.9 x 8.5 cm with handwritten descriptive labels (positive size 7.0 x 7.0 cm); preserved in one wooden box (28.5 x 11.0 x 11.1 cm) and 25 contemporary cardboard boxes, mostly with pictorial printed labels.= A rich collection of photos on glass from a time and area poorly documented. All the photos were made during a little-known geographical and anthropological expedition to Ecuador, Peru and Chile between 1909 and 1913. They show people, buildings (churches, factories), views, including street views, mountain views, etc., as well as volcanoes, geological features, sometimes including expedition members and material, of, chiefly, Ecuador, and of northern Chile, and Peru, including the upper Amazon. Over 200 photos are from Ecuador, several showing volcanoes, including some with mission crew-members amidst fumaroles. Other photos are anthropological, showing the people of the (high) Andes, as well as from the Amazon region, and people in cities such as Lima, Santiago, and Quito. Pictures include the Trans-Andeian railroad (several views); views of harbours (Valparaiso, Callao), streets, bridges, statues, a Roman Catholic procession, the army of Equador, and of Chile, on parade. A few show maps, with the expedition's itineraries. Still others show llamas, a flying condor, the unloading of a cow from a ship, Indian pottery, a beautiful girl from Chile (twice!), etc., etc. In general, there are 14 photos of expedition members and camps, 175 of various views on very diverse landscapes from the tropical rainforest to the glaciers of the high Andes. 17 volcanological photos and 19 others. The Parisian anthropologist Pierre Reinburg (1877-?) came from a family of organ builders in Strasbourg. He published on the Marawan (Guyane) Indians (1921), and a work titled 'Le Vénézuéla pacifique et travailleur' (1927). He also wrote a paper on South American plant hallucinogenics 'Contribution à l'étude des boissons toxiques des Indiens du Nord-Ouest de l'Amazone: l'ayahuasca, le yajé, le huánto. Étude comparative toxico-physiologique d'une expérience personnelle'. He was a member of the 'Société des Américanistes', but little else is known about him. For an unknown reason (perhaps the outbreak of WWI) the material gathered during this Andes-expedition remained unpublished and has been lying dormant for more than a century. The Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris contains his manuscript on the Peruvian Indian Jivaro language, which may have been based on data collected during the same expedition, also never published. It seems likely that the glass positives were used as lantern slides, but there are no records of this use. A few photos are partly browned/yellowed and very few with a broken glass or without the second (protective) part of the glass; several are in full colour, or enhanced with colour. Nearly all positives are in a very good state, crisp, without fading. Very interesting, unrecorded expedition waiting to be discovered and researched.

Mission officielle commanditée par le Ministère de l'Instruction Publique pour un voyage d'étude en Amérique latine (1909-1913).

Unpublished, 1909-1913. 266 framed glass positives (including colour positives), 9.9 x 8.5 cm with handwritten descriptive labels (positive size 7.0 x 7.0 cm); preserved in one wooden box (28.5 x 11.0 x 11.1 cm) and 25 contemporary cardboard boxes, mostly with pictorial printed labels.= A rich collection of photos on glass from a time and area poorly documented.

Midshipman's Journal with 42 Drawings, Two Large Naval Photograph Albums, and a Personal Manuscript Journal of Captain Charles Ford Hammill

Unknown to many historians and seldom recorded in genealogies, Captain Charles Ford Hammill was the son of Captain Tynte Ford Hammill who participated in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 as well as the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1884-1885. Both his father's and his brother's naval papers are held in British museums. Finally, Charles' archive now unexpectedly presents itself for acquisition. [United Kingdom, Africa, Ceylon, Middle East, 1909-1928] - The personal naval archive of Captain Charles Ford Hammill (born 1891), seemingly the only comprehensive record of this Captain's noteworthy career with the Royal Navy, consisting of his skillfully illustrated manuscript midshipman's journal, and two extensive photograph albums captioned in detail in his hand. Accompanied by a manuscript journal of family history penned by the wife of his brother John (also a RN Captain), which reveals many of Charles' little-known appointments, and other fascinating matters including the devastating long-term impact of their father's death (Captain Tynte Ford Hammill). A visually pleasing naval archive replete with manuscript drawings and photographs. These are large and generous volumes, a visually captivating naval archive. The two photograph albums are oblong folio volumes measuring 37 x 27 x 4,5 cm and contain over 600 original photographs combined. The manuscript midshipman's journal is a splendid work of 265 pages of text, plus 42 hand drawn and coloured sea charts and mechanical drawings, a folio volume issued by the Royal Navy. Charles Ford Hammill, RN, CIE, Senior Naval Officer, Persian Gulf Division (born 27 November 1891) is best known for his notable service during the Second World War, in particular for commanding HMS Cornwall during the search for the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in 1939, and then intercepting French ships in the Bight of Benin in 1940. Very little else seems to be recorded about his life and career. His name is found in only one entry of all the more popular genealogical sources, the details of which are corroborated in one of the present volumes. This, his personal archive, together with his sister-in-law's manuscript account of his family's history, seems to be the only comprehensive record of his naval service, and his connection to the Ford-Hammill lineage. Quite possibly the most thorough documentation of his career to be found anywhere, all of his naval appointments are logged in the manuscript journal of his family's history, as well as family events from his childhood to his retirement from the navy. This volume contains an uncommonly generous amount of manuscript drawings with 39 technical diagrams and 8 maps, each being a precise and striking image drawn by his steady hand. Descending from a naval pedigree, Charles' brother was also a captain in the Royal Navy, and their father was Captain Tynte Ford Hammill who participated in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 as well as the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1884-1885. His maternal grandfather was Admiral Charles Schomberg who also participated in the two aforementioned campaigns. He also had uncles in the Navy. The archive includes the following: Midshipman's Journal of Charles Ford Hammill who proved himself a particularly talented draftsman, and keen marine in the making, in the three years of making log notes, drawings, and charts, from January 1909 to January 1912. His fine hand coloured sketches include precise mechanical works illustrations, painstakingly detailed ship plans, meticulous maps, and detailed nautical charts showing fleet formations and manoeuvres. Equally detailed are his descriptions of naval procedures and tasks, of life at sea, and of memorable events. Fastidiously, Charles records barometrical readings and nautical winds, duties performed on-board, pertinent news and notable events, not missing a calendar day. In standard format, the volume is a two-part work, the first section being a succinct chronological daily naval log, the second section containing detailed accounts illustrated with charts and diagrams, in this case numerous. Charles Hammill served on five vessels whilst keeping this naval log, HMS Shannon, HMS Dee, HMS Kale, HMS Defence, and HMS Temerraire (1907). [He graduated to Sub Lieutenant in 1912, and had reached the rank of Captain by the time he served in World War II.] The first entry is made 19 January 1909 on-board HMS Shannon, on which he would learn the fundamentals of seamanship. His inaugural oversees voyage, on-board HMS Defence, would see him to Cape Town and Simon's Bay, then to Sierra Leone, Saint Vincent in Cape Verde. On this voyage he was also granted a two week leave to visit Victoria Falls. The engineering drawings of HMS Temeraire are remarkable. With this vessel, from January 1911 to January 1912, he and his colleagues learned and practiced for battle, not knowing that these skills would be utilized only a few years later in the Great War. [With the re-organization of the home commands in response to the German naval threat HMS Temeraire became part of the newly-constituted First Battle Squadron in 1912.] Condition: Folio. 265 pages in manuscript, plus 42 hand drawn and coloured sea charts and mechanical drawings tipped in throughout, each initialled or signed by him. Occasional in-text sketches in the beginning of the volume, mainly chains or ensigns. (S. 519. Journal for the use of Junior Officers, issued by the Royal Navy, 1906.) Brown cloth over marbled boards, labelled to spine, original endpapers. Volume measures approximately 22 x 32 cm. Two large and well-captioned photograph albums illustrating Charles Hammill's long life at sea, specifically his lesser-known service prior to the Second World War. Includes numerous photographs taken while he was a midshipman and corresponding directly to the writings and diagrams made in his midshipman's journal. Large oblong folio albums, together containing 608 photographs and spanning the years 1905-1928. Photographs range in size, the largest measuring approximately 29 x 23 cm, and the smallest approximately 6 x 3,5 cm. Albums measure approximately 37 x 27 4,5 cm, leather bindings slightly worn especially at spine, otherwise in very good condition. The first album, containing 200 photographs, many of which are very large, begins with a manuscript illustrated title page of sorts, Charles Ford Hammill's name in calligraphy being surrounded by 25 illustrations of Naval heraldry, each representing one of his appointments, including specific vessels and naval colleges. Photographs begin at the Royal Navy College at Osborne, in 1905, and continue at the college in Dartsmouth, from where he would graduate from cadet to midshipman. Forming an uncommon and truly delightful visual chronicle to accompany his manuscript midshipman's journal, 107 photographs capture Charles' voyages and adventures as a young seaman beginning his naval career. Serving and learning on five vessels in three years, he travelled as far as São Vicente in the Cape Verde Islands, Cape Town in South Africa, and making an inland tour to Victoria Falls on the Zambezi. First World War navy campaigns ensue. Photographs suggest that Charles was serving on battleship HMS Colossus commanded by Admiral Sir William Edmund Goodenough during the Battle of Jutland in 1916, six snapshot views showing the shellfire damage to the forward superstructure, seen from the interior of the vessel and each captioned in detail. The arrival of the American Squadron to intimidate and defeat the Germans at Scapa Flow in 1917 is also shown. A highlight of this album are the photographs taken in the North Sea from HMS Lion, alongside Admiral of the Fleet Captain Chatfield during the confrontation and surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in November 1918. This album concludes with a photograph of King George V on board HMS Barham June 1917 as he visited the Grand Fleet. The second album of photographs, with 408 views, features inter-war assignments from 1921 to 1928, and essentially forms an impressive tour of the Eastern Hempisphere. Views of special interest, captured on a voyage on HMS Colombo, include Aden, Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, the Port Louis Harbour at Mauritius, and unique scenes in Tanzania including the government house at Dar-es-Salaam and a group of Askaris in Tanga, these followed by a snapshot photograph of a camel caravan at Kisimayu (Kismayo, Somalia), the city of Zanzibar, and a shooting expedition in Kenya. After a visit to Ceylon, three photographs are taken at Bahrein. The journey continued to Karachi, with an inland sojourn to Quetta, and then to Bombay, Calcutta, the Seychelles, and so on. From May to July the SS Uanstephan Castle saw him to Durban and past the ancient Sao Sebastao Fort of Mozambique. Charles' brother, Commander John Schomberg Hammill, and John's wife Anna who wrote the accompanying journal, are pictured on their wedding day. In 1926 Charles boarded HMS Royal Oak, affording him yet more travels, this time to Italy, Greece, Malta, Jerusalem, and Cairo. The remainder of the photographs are taken on the continent, John appearing again in uniform, and several illustrating Captain Charles Hammill's personal life. Manuscript Journal of Hammill family history, approximately 150 pages, penned by Anna, wife of Captain John Schomberg Hammill, and sister-in-law to Charles Ford Hammill whose midshipman's journal and photograph albums form the archive, both men being the sons of a naval hero, although they would not know their father as he died when they were but toddlers. A unique diary of sorts, Anna's journal essentially provides a chronology of the lives of the children of Tynte Ford Hammill who served in the Nile expedition for the relief of General Gordon, simultaneously with an account of her own life. She includes an endearing description of her mother, and some 3-4 pages which describe the financial circumstances of Tynte Hammill's death. In this memorandum we learn that his sons John and Charles were pressed by aunts and uncles to join the navy in order to support their widowed mother. Consequently, both began at a young age, Charles being 14 when he became a cadet. It seemed only fitting, as he had uncles who were seamen. On 1st February 1900 his uncle Charlie, took his from Portsmouth Dockyard to Spithead in the 'Resolution' (page 45 of Journal). Another uncle, General Sir George Augustus Schomberg KCB (1821-1907), Deputy Adjutant-General Royal Marines, is also mentioned. Anna's log records each naval appointment and promotion achieved by Charles, the same for her husband of course, important family events, the whereabouts of her relatives, and the like, in a neatly organized and lucid fashion. These pages contain details of the life and naval career of Charles Ford Hammill which may be otherwise unrecorded, some of which precede his midshipman's journal. Her family history journal / diary ends abruptly in 1957, two years before her death. Charles Ford Hammill, RN, CIE, Senior Naval Officer, Persian Gulf Division (born 27 November 1891, died sometime after 1960). Charles Ford Hammill - author of the midshipman's journal and compiler of the two photograph albums - is the son of Tynte Ford Hammill (1852-1894) and Anne Schomberg (daughter of Rear-Admiral Charles Frederick Schomberg and Helen Hartshorne). His father died of Malta Fever on 1 July 1894 at Linden House, Alverstoke, Hampshire, when Charles was but 3 years old, and his brother John 4 years old, and their sister Violet 7 years old. Ranks 19 April 1904 - became a Royal Navy cadet 1905 - Attending Royal Navy College, Osborne 1906 to 1907 - Attending Royal Navy College, Dartsmouth 1908 - Cadet on board HMS Cumberland 15 January 1909 - Midshipman 30 January 1912 - Sub Lieutenant 30 August 1913 - Lieutenant 30 August 1921 - Lieutenant-Commander January 1923 to January 1924 - Senior Staff, Chatham Gunnery School 31 December 1926 - Commander 30 June 1933 - Captain (Commodore) 9 January 1939 to 20 November 1940 - Warship Command, Captain of HMS Cornwall (56) 12 January 1943 - Retired from the Royal Navy [When the European War began in September 1939, under the command of Captain Charles Ford Hammill, HMS Cornwall was transferred to the Indian Ocean and joined Force I at Ceylon. On 5 October, she was involved in the search for the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. Between 8 and 14 February 1940, she was docked at the Selborne dry dock at Simonstown, South Africa. In September, together with HMS Delhi, she intercepted Vichy-French light cruiser Primauguet and tanker Tarn, forcing them to return to Casablanca, Morocco. On 20 November 1940, Captain Percival Clive Wickham Manwaring took over command of the ship. In January 1941, she returned to the Selborne dry dock for refitting.] Charles' brother is Commander John Schomberg Hammill, RN Captain, CBE, (1890-1959). He was schooled at the Eastmans Royal Naval Academy in Portsmouth at the age of 10. He married Anna Bertholde Frances Browning on 3 December 1925 in Crawley, Hampshire John died in 1959 in Droxford. He too became a decorated Captain of the Royal Navy, his midshipman's journal and other papers now being held at the Imperial War Museum. Anna, the wife of Captain John Schomberg Hammill, is the author of the manuscript journal, being her personal diary combined with a chronology of family history. Charles' and John's father Captain Tynte Ford Hammill (1852 - 1 July 1894), entered the Royal Navy in 1865. A highly respected Captain in the Royal Navy, Tynte became Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence in 1880. He was Commander of HMS Monarch at the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882. He also served in the Nile expedition for the relief of General Gordon at Khartoum in 1884-5. His last berth was as flag captain of the Royal Sovereign. Tynte was the only child of John Baptiste Hammill and Mary Jane Ford, who married in 1849. Royal Museums Greenwich holds a collection of papers of Captain Tynte Ford Hammill, which was presented to the Museum in 1960 by his Captain Charles Ford Hammill.
