Collection of Two Official Reports Dedicated to the Development of Agricultural and Stock Farming in Rhodesia and Compiled for the British South Africa Company; With Typewritten Copies of Seven Articles on Rhodesia and its Economy:] Rhodesia, Report by Professor Wallace, October 1908; Travels in Rhodesia by London M. Douglas, F.R.S.E; The Progress of Rhodesia.

1908 - Ca. 1908-1911. Two Folio bound volumes of typewritten text (ca. 33x21 cm). Report by Wallace: [1], 3, 70, 4 leaves, period pencil corrections in text. Report by Douglas: [1], 100, [1], 43, [8], 30 leaves, with fourteen leaves of related newspaper clippings and ephemera bound in; period ink corrections in text; period ink note "London M. Douglas (personal copy)" on the first free endpaper. Two uniform red cloth bindings with gilt lettered titles on the front boards and spines. Collection of the typewritten articles: 10, 10, 10, 8, 9, 11, 9 = 67 leaves, put together with original staples. The articles numbered from 1 to VIII (article VII is apparently missing). Bindings of the reports slightly rubbed, with corners bumped, the leaves of the articles with minor creases, but overall a very good collection. Interesting collection of original reports and essays on the perspectives of farming and agriculture in Rhodesia, compiled on special request of the British South Africa Company. The first report was made by Robert Wallace (1853-1939), professor of agriculture and rural economy in the University of Edinburgh, who toured Southern Rhodesia on 29 June - 2 September 1908. His main findings were that it was "essentially a live stock country," and for future it was necessary to built a land bank, a hospital and fever camps, to introduce breeding programs for cattle, horses and pigs and to overhaul veterinary regulations. The report presents the statistics for the sheep and camel population and it seems that the "future of Rhodesia as a tame ostrich country still hangs in the balance." One of the main problems for the industry is the native labour "not only of its irregularity, unreliability and inferior quality, but its short supply and its costliness on account of the competition of the mines." The second report by London M. Douglas, "Technical Advisor on Animal Industries" was made after a trip to Rhodesia in July-September 1911, undertaken with the goal to evaluate the present state and possible development of the swine, meat, and dairy industries, together with the building of a bacon curing plant. The volume, from Douglas's personal collection, includes the report together with the detailed travel diary and related Rhodesia newspaper clippings and ephemera mounted on separate leaves. Although agriculture was progressing, Douglas reported that an agricultural college was sorely needed, together with an ice and creamery plant and a bacon factory. The collection of articles titled "The Progress of Rhodesia" consists of 8 essays, dedicated to the country's history, geography, population, agricultural produce, forestry, tobacco, live stock, fruit and vegetables, the author also gives recommendations to prospective farmers. The articles were most probably published in a newspaper titled "Country Life" (or in a column of the same name). "British South Africa Company (BSAC, BSACO, or BSA Company), mercantile company based in London that was incorporated in October 1889 under a royal charter at the instigation of Cecil Rhodes, with the object of acquiring and exercising commercial and administrative rights in south-central Africa. The charter was initially granted for 25 years, and it was extended for a 10-year period in 1915. After 1897 the BSAC administered the two Rhodesia's, encouraging the immigration of white settlers with exaggerated tales of gold deposits. When these claims were proved to be overstated, settlers were encouraged as farmers. Company rule ended in Southern Rhodesia in 1923, when the white settlers were granted responsible government, and in Northern Rhodesia in 1924, when the British Colonial Office assumed control" (Encyclopaedia Britannica).         SARDONICS: SIXTEEN SKETCHES .

New York: Metropolitan Syndicate, Inc., [1908] - Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-225 [226-228: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original light green cloth, lettered in red on front and spine panels. First edition. The rare first issue with integral title leaf bearing the "Metropolitan Syndicate" imprint and bound in non-pictorial green cloth. SARDONICS is the first of Lyon's two books, both collecting some of his short fiction. Lyon's untimely death at age 33 cut short a promising literary career. His fiction was of high caliber and has been favorably compared with that of Stephen Crane and Ambrose Bierce. "The 31 tales and sketches in [SARDONICS and GRAPHICS] can be properly compared with the work of Crane and Bierce for vivid, highly characterized and purposeful narrative. 'The Second Motive' in SARDONICS and 'Revenge' in GRAPHICS are psychological murder tragedies at the two extremes of the social scale. Lyon, like Crane and Norris, died before his talents had fully matured and, unfortunately, when his work had only begun to appear in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE and to attract special attention." - Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting, p. 204. Most of the stories in SARDONICS are mystery or detective shorts, some with fantastic elements. "Into the Fourth Dimension" concerns the fate of the inventor of a device to project people into other dimensions who is poisoned in a Chinese restaurant, kills his tormentor, and escapes into another dimension with disastrous results. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L- 615. Not in Hubin (1994). Light wear to crown of spine panel, else a near fine, bright copy. (#8425) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Ironic quotation about work penned by Mark Twain to the wife of insurance broker Henry W. Marsh

"Autograph Quotation Signed ?Mark Twain,? 4.25? x 2?, affixed to the lower portion of a 4.25? x 6.5? cabinet card photograph. No place, February 20, 1908. To Mrs. H.W. Marsh. Light soiling. Darkly penned by Clemens. Fine condition.?Let us save the to-morrows for work. Truly Yours Mark Twain. Mrs. H.W. Marsh. Feb. 20/08.?It is ironic that Mark Twain would say this. In ?A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur?s Court,? he wrote: ?The poorest paid architect, engineer, general, author, sculptor, painter, lecturer, advocate, legislator, actor, preacher, singer, is constructively in heaven when he is at work.?Clemens inscribed this advice about work to Mrs. Henry W. Marsh. In 1905, Henry W. Marsh and Donald R. McLennan formed Burrows, Marsh & McLennan in Chicago becoming the world's largest insurance agency. It was renamed Marsh & McLennan in 1906.This iconic photograph was taken in 1904 by J.G. Gessford. On verso is mounted a label: ?Release granted on copyright for newspaper, and magazine reproduction provided credit is given viz: Copyrighted Photo by Gessford, N.Y. This image was used as the frontispiece for the 1923 Gabriel Wells edition of ?Mark Twain's Speeches.? Another label on verso indicates that this cabinet card photograph was purchased from Louis Katz Art Galleries in New York City."

Aurora Australis. Published at the Winter Quarters of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907, during the winter months of April, May, June, July, 1908 ... Printed at the sign of "The Penguins" by Joyce and Wild', 1908. Bottled Liquor Copy. Latitude 77o 32' South, Longitude 166o 12' East, Antarctica. B.A.E. BOTTLED LIQUOR copy

Cape Royds, East Antarctica: British Antarctic Expedition at the Sign of the Penguins. Very Good. 1908. First. Qtr. Sheep. One of only eighty (or less) copies. Verso of front board reads "[B]RITISH / [AN]TARCTIC / [EXPEDITION]" Rear board recto reads "BOT[T]LED / LIQUO[R] " Eleven lithographs and engravings; 109 unnumbered leaves. Quarter sheep over beveled provision crate boards. As Shackleton (The Heart of the Antarctic, 217-218) relates 'Â…Joyce and Wild set up the little hand-press and sorted out the type Â…and then they started to set and print the various contributions that were sent in by members of the expedition. The early days of the printing department were not exactly happy, for the two amateur typesetters found themselves making many mistakes, and when they had at last "set up" a page, made all the necessary corrections, and printed off the necessary required number of copies, they had to undertake the laborious work ... of distributing the type again. They plodded ahead steadily, however, and soon became more skilful, until at the end of a fortnight or three weeks they could print two pages in a day. A lamp had to be placed under the type-rack to keep it warm, and a lighted candle was put under the inking-plate, so that the ink would keep reasonably thin in consistency. The great trouble experienced by the printers at first was in securing the right pressure on the printing-plate and even inking of the page, but experience showed them where they had been at fault. Day meanwhile prepared the binding by cleaning, planing, and polishing wood taken from the Venesta cases in which our provisions were packed. Marston reproduced the illustrations by algraphy, or printing from aluminium platesÂ….but Â… managed to produce what we all regarded as creditable pictures." A virgin copy (without the usual restorations and/or repairs) of the first book published in Antartica and one of the most desirable of polar titles. Inevitable wear to spine tips. Quarto: 207x272mm; text block 195x260mm. Imaged pages and/or details available. Headland, Chronology of Antarctic Exploration, 1700.; Quarto .

Chester, College Hill, Cincinnati, O. May 21 - 09." Spine letters faded out, else a very good copy of an elusive Queen's Quorum title. Queen's Quorum 39 says, "The grandiose Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford started his bigtime bamboozling and no apter description of the book can be devised than its own subtitle: A Cheerful Account of the Rise and Fall of an American Business Buccaneer." "Stories to the live business men of America, those who have been "stung" and those who have yet to undergo that painful experience." There is a touch of stain on the edge of the plate opposite p. 32, but the rest are clean as a whistle. Chip measuring nearly 2" square missing from the bottom corner of p. 73, at the end of Anne's prayer. This copy has the marks of a well-loved book owned by a careful, but frequent, reader. If you are interested, you are probably already aware of how rare and desirable a first edition of Anne is for collectors, probably for yourself. This copy has a very happy-reader quality to it, and while it carries its history on its back, shows the promise of a cornerstone item to the right treasure hunter. (Lechowick, 25)..

        Woodsmen of the West

Book is GOOD in strict observance of grades withiut regard fo age but this is ove a century ol and at least VERY GOOD for its age. Brown boards with black titling. Tissue-protected frontis. Title page as on scan. 12 photos on 8 plates, as published, and all fine condition.Quote:Woodsmen of the West is a novel by Martin Allerdale Grainger, first published in 1908 by Edward Arnold. In writing the novel, Grainger drew on his experiences as a logger working in the coastal forests of British Columbia, Canada.Woodsmen of the West is one of the first examples of realism in western Canadian literature. Grainger based his novel on his unsentimental account of life in the logging camps. This way of writing gave the story a rough edge that was unusual fare for Canadian readers. It is a "dramatic and loosely structured tale... at heart a love story." It also paints the picture of a logging operator both obsessed with the lumber trade and with his own power. The accuracy of detail in Grainger's work has led it to be called "one of the finest examples of local realism in Canadian writing." UNQUOTE.When Woodsmen of the West first appeared in 1908, most readers could not relate to its rendering of the rough edges of logging-camp life. M. Allerdale Grainger refused to sentimentalize the West ?" he drew from life. While his dramatic and loosely structured tale is at heart a love story, it also tells of what happens when the novel?s British narrator encounters a small-time logging operator whose obsession with lumber is matched by his lust for power over other men.QUOTE. Today the novel is recognized as marking a significant shift in fiction written in and about the Canadian West. The accuracy of its detail makes it one of the finest examples of local realism in Canadian writing. It is also a fascinating chronicle of conflicting personalities, and of the genius of British Columbia hand-loggers, the culture of camp life, and the intrigues and corruption of the lumber business at the turn of the century. UNQUOTEAn excessively rare book. I can find no trace of a first edition like this is any library in the world although there ebooks and PODs.

REMINISCENCES OF SENATOR WILLIAM M. STEWART OF NEVADA.

The Neale Publishing Company, 1908. - First edition. Red cloth, outlined in black, gold stamping on front cover and spine, 358 pp., frontis. [portrait], introduction. Paher 1883 says, "Fresh from Yale, Stewart went to California in '49 where he mined for ore, fought Indians and became a district attorney. After 1861 he pursued his law career in Virginia City, and in Comstock litigation alone he received $500,000.00 in fees. In 1864 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Nevada; after leaving office in 1876 he looked in on cattle-raising in Arizona and mining in Sonora. In 1887 Stewart was reelected to the Senate, where not suprisingly he devoted much time lobbying for the silver interests. At 83 and in retirement, Stewart reminisced about his experiences while sitting around his southern Nevada law office at Rhyolite. In this book he recounts the great Comstock legal battles involving $10 million and more, and describes how he championed the cause of "one-ledge" litigants. He also wrote important national mining laws. This informal discussion also has general information on contemporary politics and society, railroads, the Mormons, chapters on "Discovery of the Comstock Lode" and Nevada's territorial and early statehood days. Stewart thus touches upon most everything that happened in Nevada and the West. An important work." Six Guns 295 says "Scarce." Senator Stewart says he witnessed the O K Corral battle, from a distance. Cloth lightly rubbed, else very good, tight copy in dust jacket with chip at head of spine and extending onto the front panel, and with moderate wear to the extremities. PAHER 1883. SIX GUNS 295. Albers-Schönberg). - Hamburg, Lucas Gräfe & Sillem, 1908, 4°, 49 pp., mit 140 Bildern auf 23 orig. photograph. Foliotafeln, OHLnBd..

Zeppelin").

Stuttgart, 2. III. 1908. - 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. In German, to an unknown recipient: "Ganswindt has publicly alleged to have sent me, by registered mail, the measurements which my airship must have, and that my airship can have any value only insofar as I followed his advice. - I did in fact receive such a letter, but only years after I had already submitted to the Kaiser's commission the design for my airship with the very measurements it later was to have [.]". - The East Prussian inventor Hermann Ganswindt (1856-1934) developed concepts for a space vehicle based on the principle of repulsion. His two-stage vehicle was designed to be driven by a series of dynamite explosions. Since it was to be taken aloft by way of a carrier vehicle, he designed a helicopter as early as 1884. Ganswindt's work is considered to be ahead of his time by several decades since his contemporary fellows had been unable to recognize the impact of his ideas. During his late years he kept in touch with Austrian rocket pioneer Max Valier as well as with German rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth, who shared his knowledge of Robert Goddard's work with him. - On stationery with printed address. Some browning due to paper, otherwise well-preserved.

A Trip to Pilawin. The Deer-Park of Count Joseph Potocki in Volhynia Russia.

Rowland Ward London 1908 - Small 4to. xiv, 115 pp., 2 pages ads at end. Original light blue cloth gilt, photographic onlay to front cover, top edge gilt; ex-Bowdoin College copy with blind-stamp to title, label to spine, near withdrawal label to pastedown. Scarce and important record of sport and preservation before the Great War - a very fresh, clean copy, more or less untouched. In his preface, the noted sportsman Potocki (author of Sport in Somaliland) recounts how he started the preserve at Pilawin to provide a wild habitat for the breeding of elk and that his success encouraged him to import American and Siberian wapiti, the red deer of the Caucasus, and other animals. He was given a breeding pair of European bison from the royal preserve of Bielowicz, and added a herd of American bison as well. The Pilawin preserve, near the Potocki palace of Antoniny (in present day Ukraine), comprised more than 7,000 acres of forests and meadows enclosed by an eight-foot high wooden paling and was part of a larger forest of some 50,000 acres.
