HISTORY OF THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA.translated from the Spanish, By F.A. Motteux

Edinburgh John Grant 1908 - 4 volumes. First Edition Thus, Grant's fine printing of 1908. With Provenance. Richly illustrated throughout with 37 engravings designed and etched by Ad. Lalauze on tissue-guarded plates, including a fine engraved portrait of Cervantes at the beginning of Volume I. Title pages printed in red and black. Tall, thick 8vo, in very fine contemporary three-quarter chocolate brown morocco over brown cloth, the back and corner pieces gilt ruled, the spines beautifully gilt tooled in a morning glory motif in compartments separated by finely gilt tooled raised bands, two compartments gilt lettered, fine marbled endpapers, a.e.g. These impressive bindings were no doubt custom made for Sir James Liege Hulett, South African sugar magnate and noted philanthropist, whose engraved armorial plates are affixed to the front endpapers xlii, 445; x, 484; xii, 512; xii, 508 pp. A very handsome set, the fine bindings remarkably free of wear of evidence of use, the text very fine but for the lightest of inevitable spotting which only occasionally appears and is primarily confined to the prelims. A FINE AND HANDSOME SET WITH EXCELLENT ACADEMIC INCLUSIONS. A beautiful set of Cervantes and a very scarce edition edited by J.G. Lockhart who also wrote the included essay on the Life of Cervantes. Motteux’s translation is one of the most famous of the period, and here, the book is presented in lovely style. There is a fine ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text and in addition, important and very copious notes on the text are appended. The content of the notes is of significant interest to the reader as they have been taken from the most important and scholarly editions prepared by Bowle, Pellicer and the Academy. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time. Blackwood’s said of the translation that "This is, we think, out of all sight, the richest and the best. . Motteux, the translator of Cervantes and Rabelais, possesses a native humour which no other translator that we ever met with has approached." And William Prescott said that "The most popular versions in English are those of Motteux, Jarvis, and Smollett. Perhaps the first is the best of all. It was by a Frenchman who came over to England in the time of James the Second. It betrays nothing of its foreign parentage, however, while its rich and racy diction, and its quaint turns of expression, are admirably suited to convey a lively and very faithful image of the original. The slight tinge of antiquity, which belongs to the time, is not displeasing, and comports well with the tone of knightly dignity which distinguishes the hero."         New Mexico and Arizona Land Company; A Collection of Financial Documents

The New Mexico and Arizona Company traced its beginnings to the period of the 19th Century building of Transcontinental Railroads. Once the joint venture between the Frisco and the Atchinson Topeka and Santa Fe built a line from Isleta, New Mexico Territory to Needles, California, millions of acres opened up and the Frisco now had 1.2. million acres of fee land (including surface and mineral rights). In 1908 they incorporated the company and by 1916 it was on the American Stock Exchange. These 396 documents each measuring 12" x 10" and housed in a heavy binder show how many easterners invested in land they would never see. They recorded many investors including the well known author Irving Bacheller. During the period of these records, "Colonel" Sam A. Hughes became the colonization agent for the Frisco Lines. Since he himself was from St. Louis it probably accounts for the many owners in St. Louis although in his own record found here he signs his name Sam A. Hughes and lists Albuquerque, New Mexico as his residence. What made these sales so strong was the belief that they had vast oil and gas deposits just waiting to be taken. When Arizona State Sen. Bob Worsley of Mesa in 1985 invested in the 100 year old company, he said it his way: " Well, after I sold SkyMall I wanted to get into a business that had more diversity. So, I bought the New Mexico and Arizona Land Company - it was the oldest public company on the American Stock Exchange. Its main assets were a 100-year-old portfolio of land and minerals. The portfolio included 100,000 fee acres and a million acres of minerals. And then like all good entrepreneurs, one asks what do I do with this? So I went through almost 100 years of files and discovered that there was uranium and coal in New Mexico, there was some oil and gas in McKinley County; there was potash in the Holbrook area; a large salt deposit below the potash; some helium potential and more." This collection primarily covers the period 1920-1925 and shows how extensive the goal to get rich was in the period just before Black Friday on 1929. Today the company exists in a very small way as a Mesa, Arizona real estate firm.. Good.

[Manuscript]: Memorandum on the Treaty Rights of the Jews of Roumania

London: [no publisher]. 1908. Typescript manuscript. 16pp. String-tied maroon crocodile textured wrappers with hand-titled paper label. Numerous tears and moderate loss to the wraps but with only light toning to the interior pages except for last page which has some creasing, overall very good. This memorandum was prepared by the London Committee of Deputies of Jews, a group formed in the mid-18th Century to safeguard the interests of the Jewish community, and given to Sir Edward Grey, the longest tenured British Foreign Secretary. The memorandum outlines various violations by the Romanian government to the Convention of Paris (1858) and the Treaty of Berlin (1878). It was likely written in reaction to the previous year's Romanian peasants' revolt in which over 10,000 people were killed and the origin of which was falsely blamed on the Jews. A notable document of European prewar Jewish solidarity and reaction to anti-Semitism. .

Views of the Bazar Valley Field Force, 1908.

Peshawar: Mela Ram photographer, [1908] - Landscape quarto. Album leaves loose, housed in a blue cloth drop-back box, title - "Photographs" - from the original album mounted on upper panel. Overall very good. 93 gelatine silver print photos, images approx. 140 × 85 mm, mounted on 24 leaves, of these 55 single photos and 6 panoramas, three 2-section, two 3-section and one 4-section, are part of the publication and numbered in the negative with letterpress captions beneath, organized in sections charting the progress of the expedition from Khaibar via Chora, Walai, China, & Halwai, the final section, "Miscellaneous" includes the jirga, or tribal gathering, at which the peace was settled. Additionally there are 27 related gelatine silver prints of privately taken photographs, mounted on the versos of the leaves, mostly approx. 105 × 75 mm, with ink captions identifying groups and individuals of the 59th Rifles and including the names of Lieutenant Anderson and Colonel Carruthers, most relating to the Bazar Expedition, but some from the subsequent Mohmand Expedition, plus 5 photos from Davos, pasted in at rear, including the names Hohenlohe, Thompson, Campbell and Creagh. Inked map, verso of title page showing the route of the expedition. From the time of the end of the Tirah campaign in 1897–8 the Zakka Khel Afridis had "remained the persistent enemies of tranquility and progress. Numerous raids in British territory were proved to have their origin in the Bazar Valley" (Nevill, Campaigns on the North West Frontier p. 331). The autumn of 1907 brought a renewal of activity, raids being carried out "with such daring that even Peshawar city itself became the scene of wholesale robbery under arms. A military expedition was then sanctioned at the beginning of February 1908, 'limited strictly to punishment of Zakka Khel, and not occupation or annexation of tribal territory' " (ibid.) An expedition was raised under the command of Major-General Sir James Willcocks. "I had at my disposal two Brigades of Infantry, with a third on the line of communications, and in reserve four Squadrons of Cavalry, one Battalion Pioneers, with an extra Battalion of Infantry as Divisional troops, two Batteries of mountain guns, and two Companies of Sappers and Miners" (Willcocks, The Romance of Soldiering and Sport). The expedition was swiftly and efficiently successful. "From the first I made up my mind to move so quickly that the Afridis would be taken unawares The Afridis were quite dumbfounded by our rapid movement, and in twenty-four hours we had practically decided their fate. Owing to the fact that no other Afridi clan joined [them] . and the Mohmand Lashkars arrived too late, they stood no chance against the highly trained Division under my command. They never got a look in, and within a fortnight, what Punch did us the great honour of calling 'Willcocks' weekend War' was over and we were back in Peshawar." Willcocks was sent a telegram by the king himself congratulating him on the skill with which the operations had been carried forward and on "the bravery and good conduct of the troops, which I consider has been beyond all praise." A superb visual record of campaigning on the North-West Frontier. We have been unable to trace any record of another copy.

Island Hymn (Patriotic Hymn of Prince Edward Island).

Author and Composer, P.E.I. - 1908, 1st printing. () Very good. one. Broadside (20 X 26.5 cm.) printed on one side only. Paper is cream coloured and printed with black ink. Old fold lines from having been folded into six. A few old creases. Small piece missing from corner. Old closed tear with professional restoration. A great rarity and possibly unique item. The lyrics were written by Montgomery in 1908 and it was sung to the music of Lawrence Watson. It was performed the first time in public on May 22, 1908. It would appear the manuscript and related correspondence are on display at Green Gables House, Cavendish P.E.I. This printed broadside is nicely signed by Montgomery on the bottom of the page. Its survival seems to have been due to being folded and perhaps stuck in a book. Printed above the signature is the following statement "As only a limited number of copies of this are printed, please do not destroy or lose." Perhaps this was a hand out at the first performance. We can find no reference to this printing anywhere and it does not show up in Russell. A search on the internet does not reveal anything as well. It has been pointed out to us recently that the signature may be in question. As there are elements that match Montgomery's ususal signature, this is not a typical way in which she signed. We do not doubt the authenticity of the broadside but perhaps the signature is by a previous owner or perhaps an admirer at the event had her sign in this way. It still is a remarkablely rare item.         A ?compliment? from Mark Twain?s new collection of compliments which he read at the 1908 Lotos Club dinner honoring him: a little girl compares him to Jesus ? but when he read it at the dinner, he substituted John the Baptist for Jesus!

Presently she said, reverently, ?We?ve got a Jesus like that at home, only ours has more trimmings.?The Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States, was founded in New York City in 1870 by a group of young writers, journalists and critics. Samuel L. Clemens, who joined in 1873, called Lotos ?The Ace of Clubs.?         The Regicide: or, James the First, of Scotland. A Tragedy

Printed by Subscription for the Benefit of the Author. First edition, preceding the published trade edition of the same year.. Binding a bit rubbed; some dust-soiling and light foxing, with a small damp-stain along the lower edges; a very good, large untrimmed copy.. Rothschild 1908; NCBEL II, 963. 8vo, early 19th century mottled calf (neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down), gilt decorations, gilt inner dentelles, morocco labels, gilt lettering, untrimmed. The Regicide, which Smollett brought with him to London as an 18-year old in 1739 and upon which Smollett had hoped to establish his literary career, was never acted, and he was forced to go to sea as a ship?s surgeon instead. In his preface here, Smollett gives an account of his assorted reversals in attempting to get the tragedy produced; the account of Melopoyn?s tragedy in Roderick Random is the fictionalized version of Smollett?s ill usage at the hands of peers, theatre managers and ersatz patrons.

Australian Architecture. A technical manual .

      - Melbourne, Robertson [1908]. Octavo untrimmed in dark green morocco (spine now a dark brown) by Margaret Chapman, lettered in gilt on the spine and blocked in blind on the sides; [6],544pp, 94 plates (one colour). A very good copy. A special presentation copy bound in a credible (despite some typically clunky lettering) craft binding signed 'MC' on the rear dentelle - Margaret Chapman, one of the first professional craft binders in Australia; she established the Craftsman Bindery and won exhibition prizes in 1907 - with on heavy endpapers, a carefully calligraphed inscription from Haddon to Frank Templeman Mew 'with the affectionate greetings of his one time pupil . inscribed in Melbourne in the year 1909'. and a mounted photograph of Haddon facing the caption 'The author at work in the study at 'Anselm' Caulfield'. Haddon served his articles with Mew in London from 1881. Mew's architectural career was brief; born the second son in a family given to brewing for the eldest son and architecture for the rest, he was still young and unknown in the mid eighties when he was called back to brewing, so becoming a rich and successful businessman. For generations this was the first true Australian architecture book. Before this we have some trade and technical literature, some government reports and scattered papers and, recently discovered, a pattern book printed but probably not published in Melbourne in 1885. So Mr Haddon is now moved down to second place. This is a matter of precedence rather than importance as no-one ever saw the pattern book. Despite Haddon's approach (a textbook rather than pattern book), his examples can easily be traced to his own projects - domestic, commercial, churches, hospitals and shearing sheds. His city office in this book, for example, is a close relative to his Fourth Victoria building in Collins Street, Melbourne. His work was modern, very much Arts & Crafts (or Federation if you like) at this period and he argues for a specific response to local conditions and materials and demands a modern, honest use of materials. Not all his designs hark back to English antecedents; the colour plate here shows a city building owing a dramatic debt to Moorish Spain (and some fairytale castle) and his design for the Swinburne College building appears to be part Spanish mission and part Mesopotamian.
