TIRAGE UNIQUE A 225 EXEMPLAIRES. Liguria preistorica

Tipografia Sordomuti, Genova 1908 - In 4°, legatura in mezza pergamena con titoli oro su tassello. pp. 765, (1) con 271 illustrazioni nel testo e 8 tavole in nero. Firma di antica mano al frontespizio. Ottimo stato. Opera assai rara e ricercata. Edizione originale. Prefazione dell'Autore). [Attributes: First Edition]

Photograph Album documenting the construction and testing of the New York City Fire Department's High Pressure Hydrant System

New York City, 1908. Photograph Album. Very Good. Oblong 12 Mo. The album measures 10.5" x 7" and contains 25 leaves with 72 photographs ranging in size from 3.25" x 2.25" to 9" x 6". A printed organizational roster of the National Fire Protection Association is laid in. One leave loose, otherwise in very nice shape. By the beginning of the 20th century, skyscraper fires had become a major concern in New York City as pumper wagons were unable to generate enough pressure to shoot water to the top of the high buildings. So, between 1905 and 1908, the city built a high pressure hydrant system to protect the entire area from 23rd Street to the Battery powered by two pumping stations. Upon its completion, an article in Technical World Magazine noted that "Should the fire be in a thirty or forty story skyscraper . . . only a pair or three hydrants need to be connected . . . and clear to the top floor leaps a deluge which all the engines in Greater New York could not begin to force. . . ." These exceptional photographs include images of the construction, the Ganswvoort pumping station, pumping equipment and wagons, and the demonstration and testing of the system performed in July of 1908.

At that time, there were not many great female protaganists in novels, but there was a great audience of women readers who fell in love with this bright and extremely imaginative red-headed orphan. The book was an immediate sensation and the series followed. It's one of these most beloved girl books ever written, having sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and translated into at least 20 languages. It has also been adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays. "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?".. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

        First & Last Things.

London: Archibald Constable & Co. Ltd.,, 1908. A Confession of Faith and Rule of Life. Octavo. Original blue-green cloth, titles to spine gilt and to front board in black. Tips very slightly worn, some loss of size to covers, erased inscription to front free endpaper, some light foxing to endleaves and edges of text block; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in pencil, "Henry Newbolt, from the author. Nov. 1908." Between 1900 and 1905 Newbolt was the editor of the Monthly Review, where he enthusiastically reviewed Wells's The Sea Lady in 1902. A flattered Wells invited Newbolt to join the Co-efficients dining club, which had been set up by Sidney and Beatrice Webb that year, "'for politicians to meet thinkers'", and included other Edwardian luminaries such as Bertrand Russell, Sir Edward Grey and Alfred Milner. "Newbolt's intimate (if brief) friendship with H.G. Wells was one of the most surprising results of his stint as an editor" (Chitty, p. 137). With some annotations to the rear free endpaper, possibly in Wells's hand, noting topics of interest and corresponding page numbers. From the library of Henry Newbolt, with his bookplate to the front pastedown.

        Londres comme je l'ai vu.

Eugene Rey, Paris 1908 - One of 100 de luxe copies on japon, this one unnumbere. 156 illustrations of London by Charles Huard. 8vo., in an unique original vellum binding by Carayon with an original painting by Draner of a Life Guard and a Beefeater on each cover and one of an officer on the spine, spine lettered in gilt, in the original marbled paper stiff wrapper lettered in gilt and slipcase, original wrappers bound in. A very handsome book and binding. Draner who did the three painting on the binding was an important Belgian painter, illustrator and cartoonist. His real name was Jules Jean George Renard (1833-1926) and Draner was an anagram of his surname. He moved from Belgium to France in 1861 and became known at this time for his caricatures of military life, as on this binding which depicts a Lifeguard, a Beefeater and an army officer all with improbable whiskers, arrogance and spectacular 'English' noses. His military caricatures can be seen in several published albums including Types Militaires de Toutes Les Nations and Nouvelle vie militaire. He worked on many magazines and designed costumes for theatres and opera houses. Charles Huard (1874-1965) was a French painter and illustrator very well known for his illustrations to Balzac. His London book was the third voyage book he was commissioned to do, the others were on Berlin and New York. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
