Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with pictorial cover in black and gilt design with gilt lettering to spine and cover. 5,360 copies published. This is part of London's autobiography (BAL 11906) (Sissions & Martens 37). First edition. The Road is an autobiographical memoir by Jack London, first published in 1907. It is London's account of his experiences as a hobo in the 1890s, during the worst economic depression the United States had experienced up to that time.[1] He describes his experiences hopping freight trains, "holding down" a train when the crew is trying to throw him off, begging for food and money, and making up extraordinary stories to fool the police. He also tells of the thirty days that he spent in the Erie County Penitentiary, which he described as a place of "unprintable horrors," after being "pinched" (arrested) for vagrancy. In addition, he recounts his time with Kelly's Army, which he joined up with in Wyoming and remained with until its dissolution at the Mississippi RiverCondition:Inner hinges cracked, spine ends and corners rubbed, corners bumped, stain on back board. Over all good to very good lacking dust wrapper.

        STAFF OFFICER’S SCRAP-BOOK During the Russo-Japanese War

London Edward Arnold 1905, 1907 - 2 volumes. First edition, first impression of each volume. Profusely illustrated with photographs, plans and maps. Many of the plans and maps are folding, maps printed in colours. Thick 8vo, publisher’s original bindings of royal blue ribbed cloth lettered and ruled in gilt on spines, upper covers with gilt signature facsimiles and border rules in blind. x, 362; xi, 387 including index, 16 pages of ads. A very nice set, very handsome and bright, some bits of age evidence to the cloth at the board edges as is normal. A VERY SCARCE SET IN FIRST ISSUE FORMAT FOR EACH VOLUME. THIS SET IS ALSO IN QUITE BRIGHT AND PLEASING CONDITION. After more than twenty-five years of proving his mettle in India and Afghanistan, Ian Hamilton was appointed foreign attaché to the First Japanese Army during the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Although his movements in the field were severely restricted, Hamilton’s descriptive powers as a writer turned this war diary into one of the most acclaimed and widely read military memoirs of the period. Hamilton’s Scrap-Book was hailed by Britannica as "a book which by reason of the interest of its subject, the charm of the author’s style, and and the combination of war experience and of imagination which inspired his judgments and criticisms, at once took rank in Europe as a modern military classic." Both volumes of this fine set include copious illustrations and fold-out maps, and many remain to this day in remarkable condition. This set with the ownership signature of Sir Donald Currie, and noted as being from his steam yacht Iolaire. Further there is a tipped 1920 typed label of his daughter, Margaret (Currie) Mirrielees, which also notes the volumes as ex-libris the S.Y. Iolaire. Currie was a ship owner, member of Parliament and noted philanthropist. His political career began in 1875 when, due to his knowledge of South African affairs gained as an owner of the Union Steamship Company, Lord Carnarvon, the colonial secretary, entrusted him with the conduct of negotiations with President Brand of the Orange Free State and President Burgers of the Transvaal Republic regarding the occupation of the Kimberley diamond fields. Currie entered Parliament in 1880 and in 1886 he broke on the home rule question with Gladstone, whom he had hitherto followed. He represented West Perthshire until his retirement from parliament in 1900. He remained on intimate social terms with Gladstone, who was on several occasions between 1883 and 1895 his guest with other distinguished persons on one or other of his ships for summer cruises.         The Twentieth Century Retractor, Chess Fantasies and Letter Problems: Being a Selection of Three Hundred Problems by Mrs W.F. Baird. Enriched with Shakespearean Quotations.

4to., original publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt on spine with triple gilt panels and central gilt block on upper board reproduced in blind on lower board, all edges gilt. Floral watered silk endpapers. Printed in red, blue and black. Portrait frontispiece. Spine slightly darkened small ink name stamp on rear endpaper, otherwise a very good copy of an elegantly produced book. First edition, "[One] of the most elegant chess books ever to appear" (Hooper & Whyld 27). Edith Baird was a well-known figure in the chess world during the early 20th century. She was a regular contributor to British Chess Magazine and leading newspapers of the day, and established herself as a problem setter of the highest calibre. In her career she "composed more than 2000 problems ... noted for their soundness" (Hooper & Whyld), with remarkably few errors detected in her body of work. Her first work, Seven Hundred Chess Problems, also published by Henry Sotheran in an edition of 500 copies in 1902, presented 700 classic chess problems, each handsomely presented and finely printed with a board diagram in red and blue. Baird was also one of the first to create multi-move retractor problems, chess puzzles in which the solver must work backwards, taking back a specified number of moves before a forward mating move can be performed. This second work, The Twentieth Century Retractor, is one of the earliest collections of such problems. Each of the 300 problems in this book is handsomely presented and introduced by a Shakespearean quotation designed to enrich the solving experience as well as provide hints towards the solution. "Above each problem throughout the volume will be found the name of the paper in which it originally appeared, and to each position Shakespearean quotations have been given. In some cases the quotations apply to the position as presented on the diagram, and, in others, to the positions presented throughout the solution."

International Competition of the Carnegie Foundation. The Palace of Peace at The Hague. The 6 premiated and 40 other designs chosen by the society of architecture .

      - London, Jack 1907. Folio (49x38cm); eight parts loose as issued in publisher's printed wrappers and cloth portfolio (the portfolio a bit marked and bumped); 76 plates (eight colour) - elevations and plans. An excellent set. A luxurious production. According to the report judging took several days, votes were close and there was some argument before Cordonnier's baroque wedding cake was given first prize, largely, the report suggests, due to its sympathy with surrounding buildings. Of the now revered competitors, Otto Wagner got fourth prize and Berlage and Saarinen were further down the lists. Despite stylish aspects of their designs and the idiosyncratic splendour of Debat's Indo-Mayan stupa - which looks to me like it could have inspired Burley Griffin's parliament house for Canberra - it does seem, from this distance, that the judges got it right. I'm sure they'll all sleep easier in their graves knowing that. Cordonnier's building has a joyous optimism that matches the crusading zeal for world peace of patron Carnegie and any number of seemingly sensible exponents of world unity at the time. Wagner's building is an opulent museum or theatre, Saarinen's ideal for a mausoleum, Berlage's a Byzantine basilica, and most of the others studied lumps of classical monumentalism. Cordonnier's building did suffer paring down to meet budget and lost some of its airy charm but still ended up closer to the original design than many other competition winners.

Octavo, original blue cloth, silver lettering at spine and front cover, 112 pages, two photographic illustrations. Scarce French cocktail recipe book containing 327 cocktails and an early catalog of necessary utensils. The title is significant for Newman's influence on such famous barmen as Harry Craddock, for representing the epitome of the American craft of cocktails to a French audience, and for including in the 1904 edition, the first appearance of the Dry Martini. (distinct from earlier Martini recipes for replacing sweet vermouth with dry vermouth). The Dry Martini appears in this edition as well, but had been since printed in Louis Muckensturm's Mixed Drinks (1906). WorldCat finds one copy of the 1900 edition at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and two copies of this 1907 printing (one at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the other at Bibliotheque interuniversitaire Sainte Genevieve), WorldCat lists no copies for the coveted 1904 printing. Very Good, some discoloration at spine - perhaps from exposure to dampness, covers slightly bowed at fore-edges, [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dessins für die Wand. (Cover title: Serie A. Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Dessins fur Die Wand 52 Farbige Tafeln).

Leipzig. Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). No date. Ca. 1907. Complete with 52 color lithographic plates, loose in decorative paper-covered board portfolio, 15 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. An extremely scarce title; however compromised by fire damage to covers and the extremities of a number of plates although not impacting the images themselves. Plates IV, VI, XXX and XXXII are the most severely affected (see images); on the other extreme many plates are scarcely affected. Most damage could be termed singeing to a page border. Short repaired tears to lower corner of two plates. The images themselves are clean and there is no odor. A portfolio of beautifully executed Art Nouveau patterns for wall decor by Paul Grohmann, the colors exceptionally rich and the designs striking. Many of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics emerging in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. 42 plates feature a single image while 10 feature two images.

Witches and Warlocks, Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls

London J.M. Dent 1907 - Original Watercolor Drawing from "The Ingoldsby Legends." RACKHAM, Arthur, [artist]. "Witches and Warlocks, Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls". [London: J.M. Dent, 1907]. Original fine pen and ink and watercolor from "The Ingoldsby Legends." Watercolor measures 228 x 152 mm. Frame measures 19 x 15 inches. Signed 'ARackham' on lower right corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. Image is as the title states, of a group of witches and warlocks, ghosts, goblins and ghouls, mainly in greys, blacks and some blue tones. Some minor professional restoration to edges, not affecting image. Overall a very beautiful original painting. First published, as a black and white drawing, in the 1898 J.M. Dent edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (page 465). Rackham undertook a 'careful overhauling' of the book in which 'many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again.' Accordingly, this drawing was reproduced, now in colour, opposite page 396 in the 1907 edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (J.M. Dent and E.P. Dutton). The illustration, being one of 24 colour plates within the 1907 edition, accompanies 'The Lay of St. Aloys' which is subtitled 'A Legend of Blois'.         The Road

New York: Mac Millan & Co, 1907. xii+224 pages with 48 plates including frontispiece.

Sketches Made on the Lithography Night, 14 April, 1905. Together with: Sketches Made on the Dutch Excursion - July 1906 - and on Other Occasions.

London: Art Workers' Guild, 1905; 1907. Two portfolio volumes. (1)ff., + 15 plates; (1)ff., + 16 plates. The 1905 portfolio contains a calligraphic title page by Graily Hewitt, reproduced lithographically, and fifteen original lithographs by various artists, including Joseph Pennell and T.R. Way, who printed all the plates and was instrumental in bringing lithography to the Art Workers' Guild. On its own, this portfolio is rare, with only three known copies held in institutions. The second portfolio contains an unrecorded calligraphic title page by Eric Gill and is an example of his very earliest lettering, preceded only by his work for Insel Verlag in 1905. In this example, Gill shows his engraver's hand in the arrangement of straight capitals for the five-line title and the names of the Guild artists whose work is showcased here. The portfolio is unique, with two additional lithographs by A. Vigers not called for in the contents list, along with the original pencil sketches for all three of Vigers's contributions. Allan Francis Vigers joined the Art Workers Guild in 1903 and was best known for his floral wallpaper and textile designs. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of 1910 and produced designs for Liberty & Co. This is likely Vigers's copy of the portfolio, as it is lettered with his monogram in ink on the front cover. The 1907 portfolio, like its earlier counterpart, is also rare and is reportedly held by only two institutions. Founded by a group of architects in 1884, the Art Workers' Guild was founded in accordance with the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement and sought to unify fine and applied arts. Both Gill and Hewitt joined the Guild around 1904. Light marginal foxing to a few plates, and verso of last plate of 1907 portfolio foxed all over; else a fine set, housed in cloth cases made by Douglas Cockerell, the 1905 case in brown and the 1907 case in brick red with a small lithograph by T.R. Way pasted to the upper cover.

Wonder Map of the Wonder Mining District...Map title: Revised Map of U.S. Patent & Location Surveys in Wonder Mining District Churchill County Nevada.

Wonder, Nevada. D. H. Blossom. 1907. Color folding map attached to card stock covers, 7 1/2 x 4 inches unfolding to 30 x 32 1/2 inches, depicting the Wonder Mining District [Nevada]. There are several breaks in the folds of the fragile paper, while a dogleg tear at the top of the map (archival tape repair) measures 2 x 2 1/2 inches. A congruent tear in the top margin measures two inches. The map shows the modest Wonder townsite situated in a vast landscape of mining claims, depicted in various colors. The Index on the map documents well over 100 claims. Wonder flourished between 1906 and 1919, with a 1907 population estimated at 1200 persons. The sum of $6,350,000 is attached to the Wonder District's recorded production in gold and silver. Web resources regarding Wonder and its history can be had at "Nevada Mining and You," a pdf created by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. (The pdf provides a photo of the Wonder townsite circa 1910); also, the Wikipedia entry "Wonder, Nevada" provides useful details regarding the mining town. See also Hugh Shamberger's "The Story of Wonder, Churchill County, Nevada," (Nevada Historical Press, 1974). There is only one listing for Blossom's map on WorldCat. This scarce map, of considerable interest with regard to Nevada mining history, is in very good clean condition, with issues noted.

        James Joyce Autograph.

Autograph note signed by James Joyce,"Best wishes from the four of us. My respects will follow, J. J." on an off-white 2.5 inches 2 inches. The "four of us" presumably refers to the Joyce family"James Joyce, his wife Nora Barnacle, and their children Lucia and Giorgio Joyce, which would date this signature to after 1907. Double-matted and framed with a pensive half-length photograph of the author wearing his hat and carrying his walking stick. The entire piece measures 9.75 inches by 13.75 inches. In fine condition. Joyce's novel Ulysses is "universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working seven years on his masterpiece, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Jouce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world (de Grazia, 27).

        Pride and Prejudice

London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York, , 1907. With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo. Original green cloth, elaborate decoration and titles to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece, vignette title in blue and black with tissue guard, with 22 colour plates. Slight bumps to head of spine, inner front and rear hinges starting to crack but holding, browning to endpapers; still an excellent copy. Second Brock edition, first impression, with previously unpublished plates. Brock's illustrations, first published in 1895, though sometimes qualified as "chocolate-box", Brock's illustrations showed a sharp eye for characterisation and the ironic humour of Jane Austen's world. His drawings were also well-researched; he and his brother collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.
