Dessins für die Wand. (Cover title: Serie A. Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Dessins fur Die Wand 52 Farbige Tafeln).

Leipzig. Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). No date. Ca. 1907. Complete with 52 color lithographic plates, loose in decorative paper-covered board portfolio, 15 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. An extremely scarce title; however compromised by fire damage to covers and the extremities of a number of plates although not impacting the images themselves. Plates IV, VI, XXX and XXXII are the most severely affected (see images); on the other extreme many plates are scarcely affected. Most damage could be termed singeing to a page border. Short repaired tears to lower corner of two plates. The images themselves are clean and there is no odor. A portfolio of beautifully executed Art Nouveau patterns for wall decor by Paul Grohmann, the colors exceptionally rich and the designs striking. Many of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics emerging in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. 42 plates feature a single image while 10 feature two images.

Witches and Warlocks, Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls

London J.M. Dent 1907 - Original Watercolor Drawing from "The Ingoldsby Legends." RACKHAM, Arthur, [artist]. "Witches and Warlocks, Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls". [London: J.M. Dent, 1907]. Original fine pen and ink and watercolor from "The Ingoldsby Legends." Watercolor measures 228 x 152 mm. Frame measures 19 x 15 inches. Signed 'ARackham' on lower right corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. Image is as the title states, of a group of witches and warlocks, ghosts, goblins and ghouls, mainly in greys, blacks and some blue tones. Some minor professional restoration to edges, not affecting image. Overall a very beautiful original painting. First published, as a black and white drawing, in the 1898 J.M. Dent edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (page 465). Rackham undertook a 'careful overhauling' of the book in which 'many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again.' Accordingly, this drawing was reproduced, now in colour, opposite page 396 in the 1907 edition of "The Ingoldsby Legends" (J.M. Dent and E.P. Dutton). The illustration, being one of 24 colour plates within the 1907 edition, accompanies 'The Lay of St. Aloys' which is subtitled 'A Legend of Blois'. Latimore and Haskell, Riall, HBS 67793. $18,500 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Road

New York: Mac Millan & Co, 1907. xii+224 pages with 48 plates including frontispiece. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with pictorial cover in black and gilt design with gilt lettering to spine and cover. 5,360 copies published. This is part of London's autobiography (BAL 11906) (Sissions & Martens 37). First edition. The Road is an autobiographical memoir by Jack London, first published in 1907. It is London's account of his experiences as a hobo in the 1890s, during the worst economic depression the United States had experienced up to that time.[1] He describes his experiences hopping freight trains, "holding down" a train when the crew is trying to throw him off, begging for food and money, and making up extraordinary stories to fool the police. He also tells of the thirty days that he spent in the Erie County Penitentiary, which he described as a place of "unprintable horrors," after being "pinched" (arrested) for vagrancy. In addition, he recounts his time with Kelly's Army, which he joined up with in Wyoming and remained with until its dissolution at the Mississippi RiverCondition:Inner hinges cracked, spine ends and corners rubbed, corners bumped, stain on back board. Over all good to very good lacking dust wrapper.

Sketches Made on the Lithography Night, 14 April, 1905. Together with: Sketches Made on the Dutch Excursion - July 1906 - and on Other Occasions.

London: Art Workers' Guild, 1905; 1907. Two portfolio volumes. (1)ff., + 15 plates; (1)ff., + 16 plates. The 1905 portfolio contains a calligraphic title page by Graily Hewitt, reproduced lithographically, and fifteen original lithographs by various artists, including Joseph Pennell and T.R. Way, who printed all the plates and was instrumental in bringing lithography to the Art Workers' Guild. On its own, this portfolio is rare, with only three known copies held in institutions. The second portfolio contains an unrecorded calligraphic title page by Eric Gill and is an example of his very earliest lettering, preceded only by his work for Insel Verlag in 1905. In this example, Gill shows his engraver's hand in the arrangement of straight capitals for the five-line title and the names of the Guild artists whose work is showcased here. The portfolio is unique, with two additional lithographs by A. Vigers not called for in the contents list, along with the original pencil sketches for all three of Vigers's contributions. Allan Francis Vigers joined the Art Workers Guild in 1903 and was best known for his floral wallpaper and textile designs. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of 1910 and produced designs for Liberty & Co. This is likely Vigers's copy of the portfolio, as it is lettered with his monogram in ink on the front cover. The 1907 portfolio, like its earlier counterpart, is also rare and is reportedly held by only two institutions. Founded by a group of architects in 1884, the Art Workers' Guild was founded in accordance with the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement and sought to unify fine and applied arts. Both Gill and Hewitt joined the Guild around 1904. Light marginal foxing to a few plates, and verso of last plate of 1907 portfolio foxed all over; else a fine set, housed in cloth cases made by Douglas Cockerell, the 1905 case in brown and the 1907 case in brick red with a small lithograph by T.R. Way pasted to the upper cover.

Wonder Map of the Wonder Mining District...Map title: Revised Map of U.S. Patent & Location Surveys in Wonder Mining District Churchill County Nevada.

Wonder, Nevada. D. H. Blossom. 1907. Color folding map attached to card stock covers, 7 1/2 x 4 inches unfolding to 30 x 32 1/2 inches, depicting the Wonder Mining District [Nevada]. There are several breaks in the folds of the fragile paper, while a dogleg tear at the top of the map (archival tape repair) measures 2 x 2 1/2 inches. A congruent tear in the top margin measures two inches. The map shows the modest Wonder townsite situated in a vast landscape of mining claims, depicted in various colors. The Index on the map documents well over 100 claims. Wonder flourished between 1906 and 1919, with a 1907 population estimated at 1200 persons. The sum of $6,350,000 is attached to the Wonder District's recorded production in gold and silver. Web resources regarding Wonder and its history can be had at "Nevada Mining and You," a pdf created by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. (The pdf provides a photo of the Wonder townsite circa 1910); also, the Wikipedia entry "Wonder, Nevada" provides useful details regarding the mining town. See also Hugh Shamberger's "The Story of Wonder, Churchill County, Nevada," (Nevada Historical Press, 1974). There is only one listing for Blossom's map on WorldCat. This scarce map, of considerable interest with regard to Nevada mining history, is in very good clean condition, with issues noted.

        James Joyce Autograph.

Autograph note signed by James Joyce,"Best wishes from the four of us. My respects will follow, J. J." on an off-white 2.5 inches 2 inches. The "four of us" presumably refers to the Joyce family"James Joyce, his wife Nora Barnacle, and their children Lucia and Giorgio Joyce, which would date this signature to after 1907. Double-matted and framed with a pensive half-length photograph of the author wearing his hat and carrying his walking stick. The entire piece measures 9.75 inches by 13.75 inches. In fine condition. Joyce's novel Ulysses is "universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working seven years on his masterpiece, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Jouce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world (de Grazia, 27).

        Pride and Prejudice

London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York, , 1907. With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo. Original green cloth, elaborate decoration and titles to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece, vignette title in blue and black with tissue guard, with 22 colour plates. Slight bumps to head of spine, inner front and rear hinges starting to crack but holding, browning to endpapers; still an excellent copy. Second Brock edition, first impression, with previously unpublished plates. Brock's illustrations, first published in 1895, though sometimes qualified as "chocolate-box", Brock's illustrations showed a sharp eye for characterisation and the ironic humour of Jane Austen's world. His drawings were also well-researched; he and his brother collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

        Jock of the Bushveld.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co,, 1907. Illustrated by E. Caldwell. Octavo (207 x 150 mm). Bound by Riviere and Son in tan half calf, buff cloth sides, spine fully gilt in compartments, titles gilt to black morocco labels to spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Bookseller's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard, 22 monochrome plates and fully illustrated margins. Slight rubbing to tips, light foxing to contents; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Reviewing the book in the TLS on first publication in 1907, John Buchan wrote; "to those who have some experience of the land and the life about which Fitzpatrick writes, Jock of the Bushveld will be a cherished possession. We know of no African book in which there is the same minute and loving observation of nature. Sir Percy sees the beauty of a landscape while the average man thinks of a waste of thorn and swamp. There is something of Jefferies in the style, something of Borrow, a touch of Mr. Kipling, and a great deal which is his own" While Mendelssohn describes it as "Perhaps one of the best dog stories ever written." A popular book scarce as a first impression, distinguished by having three uncorrected marginal illustrations of a dung beetle at pp.65, 337 & 457. Later impressions show him rolling his load correctly - with his back not front legs.

The Writings of Oscar Wilde (Autograph Edition)

London and New York: A. R. Keller & Co, 1907. First edition. Very Good +. The first complete edition of Oscar Wilde's works. This set one of 26 lettered copies (letter "C"), with a three page autograph letter tipped into the first volume. Illustrated throughout with hand-drawn water-color illustrations. Printed illustrations in two states, generally signed by the artists. Introduction by Richard Le Galienne and signed by him. Bound in full dark blue morocco with red morocco inlays and intricate gilt floral patterns. Inner doublures full morocco with onlays to form a large white flower. Red silk moire end papers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Bound in 15 volumes. The only signed edition of Wilde's complete works. These 26 lettered sets sold for $1500 by subscription in 1907, a huge sum for the time. The only one of these sets ever auctioned brought 7,475 pounds at Sotheby's in 1994 (approximately $11,600). With no set auctioned in the last 20 years, it is safe to call this a very rare set. Books are generally in Very Good to Near Fine condition. Three volumes rebacked with the original spines retained. One volume with the silk end paper replaced. Most volumes with light to moderate wear along the outer hinges, generally with the color touched up. Internal contents are in excellent condition, with lovely water-color illustrations throughout. Despite the defects a lovely and important set of Wilde's complete works. Not found in Mason, where the 1908 Methuen collected works is described as the first collected edition. The famed Irish wit and novelist, one of the great comic playwrights of the 19th century. Wilde is known for his devotion to the philosophy of aestheticism, which he became involved in while studying classics at Trinity College, Dublin and then at Oxford, under the influence of Walter Pater and John Ruskin. Wilde would soon become a sort of spokesperson for the movement, and in fact went on an extremely popular American tour in the early 1880s. (Though as well received as he was by various intellectual sets and salons, he was often attacked by the American press for being superficial and vacuous.) Afterward, he pursued a career in journalism, becoming the editor of The Lady's World magazine before resigning and turning to prose. He would write numerous short stories and essays and published The Picture of Dorian Grey in 1890, to mixed reviews and a great deal of controversy. Indeed, Wilde would edit the book extensively in future editions as a sort of response to his critics. In the early 1890s, Wilde turned to the theater where he would, perhaps, make his greatest mark. He wrote Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, and An Ideal Husband before completing his final, and greatest play, The Importance of Being Earnest, in 1894. Although some thought Earnest thin, more intelligent reviewers recognized its brilliance, with H.G. Wells writing "More humorous dealing with theatrical conventions it would be difficult to imagine." In 1895 Wilde became involved in his tragic libel suit against the Marquess of Queensbury, whose son Wilde was having an affair with. Wilde would be convicted of gross indecency and imprisoned for two years. His health never recovered, and he spent the remainder of his life in exile in France, before dying in 1900. Very Good +.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Published by William Heinimann, London; 1907. 4to. This exceptional book is a Deluxe LImited Edition (hand numbered 261/1130) illustrated by Arthur Rackham, and the First Edition with these illustrations. Unusually for him, Arthur Rackham did not sign any of the Alice in Wonderland limited editions as he was out of the country at the time of their preparation. There are 13 tipped-in colour plates, and all are present and in Fine condition, each with it's own captioned tissue guard. This beautiful book is square and tightly bound and is in Near FIne condition. There is some minor bumping to the spine ends and corners and some mild rubbing to the boards, with slight mark to the top front edge and a couple to the rear. There also appears to be a small ink line to the rear board, otherwise they are clean and still bright, bound in the publisher's original white cloth boards with the lovely gold gilt detailing and lettering to the front and spine. Internally, there is toning to both free endpapers, but apart from this there are only a few pages that have any spotting or signs of ageing and the pages are amazingly clear and bright for a book of this age. Overall this is an exceptional book in beautiful condition, rarely found these days, and would make the perfect gift or the ideal addition to any literary or Rackham book collection. Please do contact us if you have any queries regarding this stunning book.

Ingoldsby Legends Mirth & Marvels by Thomas Ingoldsby

Dent, London 1907 - thick 4to. 549 p. Limited to 560 copies of which this is hand numbered 483 and signed by Arthur Rackham. 12 tinted plates and 24 tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham. Original full cream vellum with silk tie detached but present, gilt title and decorative illustration on top board and spine, teg, uncut and titled tissue guards, top edge gilt, boards slightly bowed, corners sharp. Slight soiling to boards and spine, near fine. Interior free of any blemishes. Rackham¿s first effort at The Ingoldsby Legends came in 1898, 2 years after his first commissioned work (his previous books contained reprints of other works he had done for various periodicals like Scraps. His output consisted of some adventure themes but also of books on English Gardens, hunting and fishing. With Ingoldsby he began to realize that his best work came in the realm of fantasy and the first Ingoldsby was the book that would show him developing a style that was not only his own, but was to influence a generation of children and artists. This is the radically revised and updated version of that book, signed and very collectible. A scarce title of an important Rackham work in a handsome presentation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Denna sista förhoppning verkar ha slagit in.
