Famous Hypothetical Question in the Trial of Harry K. Thaw

1907. First Edition . JEROME, William Travers and GARVAN, Francis P. The Famous Hypothetical Question in the Trial of Harry K. Thaw for the Murder of Stanford White. [New York]: Boehm & Rathbone, (1907). Oblong quarto, original green reversed calf, yapp edges, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $1500.Limited first edition, one of 250 copies, with marginal illustrations and facsimiles on every page.Presented as a lavishly-illustrated “Statement of the Facts,” this work, written by the District Attorney, Jerome, and an Assistant District Attorney, Garvan, uses court transcripts to form a narrative about Harry K. ThawÂ’s murder of Stanford White and the subsequent trial. Henry K. Thaw, a millionaire heir, married Evelyn Nesbit, a young New York showgirl who had previously been involved with acclaimed architect Stanford White. Plagued by jealousy, Thaw repeatedly beat and raped Nesbit in an attempt to erase any memory of the prior relationship. Then, in 1906, at a Madison Square Garden premiere, Thaw shot Stanford White three times at close range, without provocation. At trial, ThawÂ’s lawyers offered the “dementia Americana” defense, based on a made-up psychological condition said to afflict “chivalrous American men bent on protecting their wivesÂ’ virtue” (ANB). After the first jury was unable to reach a verdict, the second jury acquitted Thaw on the grounds of temporary insanity, making this case one of the most perplexing and controversial of the 20th century. Number not written in space on limitation page. Harvard Law Catalogue, 1050. Minor foxing to frontispiece and title page, moderate rubbing to extremities, as usual. A near-fine copy. Very scarce.

Resultados de ensayos de abono. Ejectutado por la Estación de ensayos de agricultura Darmstadt, sacado del folleto "Abono de nitrógeno y neto rendimiento"

Paul Parey, Berlin 1907 - Folio (15 x 19 1/4"). 12 loose plates, as issued. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth portfolio, with gold lettering to front cover. This complete set of 12 colored photographic reproductions documents Professor Dr. Paul Wagner's field experiments with nitrogen fertilizer at the Darmstadt Agricultural Experiment Station in the years 1901 to 1906. The goal of Dr. Wagner was to show that plants need nitrogen to grow healthy stems and leaves. Although nitrogen is the most abundant element in the air we breathe, that form of nitrogen cannot be used by plants. Nitrogen contained in fertilizer, on the other hand, is readily taken up by plants. The photographs featured in this portfolio compare plants and vegetables grown with and without nitrogen fertilizer. Each print measures 11 1/2 x 10 1/8", and is pasted onto a captioned heavy cardstock (size: 14 5/8 x 18 5/8"). Spine rubbed and slightly frayed along edges. Lower left corner of plate 11 chipped (not affecting lettering or the image). Captions in Spanish. Portfolio in overall good- to good, plates in good+ to very good condition.         Piter Pan dans Les Jardins de Kensington [Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens]

Hachette et Cie, Paris 1907 - 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall; 130 p.; First Edition in French Limited, first edition of the beloved "Peter Pan" story in French. Only 20 special copies of the French edition were signed by Arthur Rackham, this volume, no. 139 of 270, is not signed. Arthur Rackham recevied the commission from his London publisher to do the illustrations for Peter Pan in June of 1905, and spent the next year making many sketches in Kensington Gardens. The venture was a complete success, as noted by the newspaper reviews of the London edition: "Not the least part of that good fortune that follows Mr. Barrie's steps is his choice of an illustrator. Mr. Rackham seems to have dropped out of some cloud in Mr. Barrie's fairyland, sent by a special providence to make pictures in tune to his whimsical genius" (quote from the Pall Mall Gazette, as related in "Arthur Rackham, His Life and Work", by Derek Hudson, pg. 66). ***DESCRIPTION: this limited edition volume is bound in full vellum with gilt lettering and a gilt depiction of Peter Pan riding a goat (which he did every night in Kensington Gardens) on the front board, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges of text pages uncut, brown pictorial endpapers with map of Kensington Gardens on the front free endpaper, limitation page follows the front free endpaper, decorative title page, frontispiece plus 49 other coloured plates (all at the rear) each with its lettered tissue-guard and mounted on heavy brown paper, decorative initial capitals; 11.5" tall; (i)-x, 1-120, all text in French, the 49 plates follow the text. ***CONDITION: Overall near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the vellum binding is clean and supple, there is the minimal bowing typical of vellum boards; the original ribbon ties are lacking, there are faint ghosts of several pieces of old cello tape on the pastedown endpapers, and the bottom rear corner is somewhat rubbed. ***International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover our costs, please contact us for details.         Dessins für die Wand. (Cover title: Serie A. Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Dessins fur Die Wand 52 Farbige Tafeln).

Leipzig. Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). No date. Ca. 1907. Complete with 52 color lithographic plates, loose in decorative paper-covered board portfolio, 15 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. An extremely scarce title; however compromised by fire damage to covers and the extremities of a number of plates although not impacting the images themselves. Plates IV, VI, XXX and XXXII are the most severely affected (see images); on the other extreme many plates are scarcely affected. Most damage could be termed singeing to a page border. Short repaired tears to lower corner of two plates. The images themselves are clean and there is no odor. A portfolio of beautifully executed Art Nouveau patterns for wall decor by Paul Grohmann, the colors exceptionally rich and the designs striking. Many of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics emerging in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. 42 plates feature a single image while 10 feature two images.

Fine portrait photograph, signed and dated (Leopoldine Victoria, 1884-1966, Princess, daughter of Alfred Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg, wife (1909) of Alfonso, 5th Duke of Galliera, grandson of Isabella II and cousin of both Alfonso XIII and Queen Ena)

1907 - showing her full length in a magnificent dress with the train spread out in front of her, holding a bouquet of flowers, 11½" x 8¼", no place, In 1902, Princess Beatrice had a romance with Russian Grand Duke Michael, the younger brother of Tsar Nicholas II, and at that time the heir presumptive to the Imperial Throne. However she was prevented from marrying the Grand Duke as the Russian Orthodox Church forbade the marriage of first cousins. In November 1903, Michael wrote to Beatrice telling her that he could not marry her. Beatrice was then rumoured to be going to marry Alfonso XIII of Spain, but this proved to be a false rumour also as he married her cousin Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg in 1906. It was at their wedding that Beatrice met a cousin of King Alfonso, Alfonso de Orleans y Borbón, Infante of Spain, 5th Duke of Galliera. The Spanish government objected to an infante's proposed match with a British Princess who, unlike Queen Victoria Eugenie, had not agreed to convert to Roman Catholicism: the King was obliged to make clear that, should the wedding take place, the couple would have to live in exile. Nonetheless, Beatrice and Alfonso married in a Roman Catholic and Lutheran ceremony at Coburg on 15 July 1909. The couple settled in Coburg, until, in 1912, Alfonso and Beatrice were allowed to return to Spain, and his rank of Infante was restored. In August 1913 Beatrice was received into the Roman Catholic Church.

Hard Cover. 240pp; + 2 pages of press reviews, with 6 of the 8 black and white photographic illustrations (lacks "Frontispiece" and "The Graves of Morant & Handcock"). Found in terrible condition, this has been restored retaining all the original cloth covering that was salvageable, the spine being the worse affected, it is now a presentable volume. "Scapegoats of the Empire" by George R. Witton was first published in June 1907 and although it was reprinted at least twice that year, it is today an extremely rare book with very few copies in existence outside major libraries. This is because there is still some mystery surrounding the circumstances of the books publication. Stories persist that the Australian government of the day were so nervous that the books contents reflected badly on Lord Kitchener (who was then one of the foremost heroes of the Empire) that they caused all copies of the book to be seized from D. W. Paterson, the original publishers and printers, prior to its publication. Another rumour abounded to the effect that the government bought up copies as they were published in order to prevent the truth from getting out and, more prosaically, it has also been suggested that there was a fire in the publishers warehouse in Melbourne which destroyed all copies. Digital images available on request. ; 190 x 125mm; 240 pages .

        The Writings of Benjamin Franklin

New York: Macmillan, 1907. First edition. Fine. 10 volumes bound by J. W. Meyer in contemporary dark green morocco over cloth boards. Spines titled in gilt with geometic details in the spine compartments, raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled end papers. In all a lovely Fine set with only the most trivial wear to the bindings. Unread and largely unopened throughout (with pages still sealed). Uniform spines, but gilt on book 2 brighter than the others. Each volume with a different frontis portrait of the author. One of America's foremost founding fathers, a famed scientist, philosopher, and inventor. Over the course of his long and varied career, Franklin would serve as minister to France and Sweden, and as the first Postmaster General of the United States. By his late twenties, Franklin had already achieved significant renown as an author, with the publication of Poor Richard's Almanac and by his 50s he had made important contributions to the study of electricity and demographics. (Science would fascinate Franklin his entire life - and he would make significant discoveries and inventions until his death.) Franklin also played numerous instruments and, interestingly enough, is thought to have been the first recorded chess player in the thirteen colonies. During the revolution, Franklin served on missions to England in addition to being one of Pennsylvania's delegates to the Continental Congress. He would go on to become ambassador to France and later was again appointed a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Franklin is also the only founding father to have his name affixed to the Declaration of Independence, the treaty of Alliance with France, The Treaty of Paris, and the US Constitution. Fine.

The Empress, her ladies and the boys kept in touch for several years. See Miss Howard's 'Potsdam Princes' (London and New York, 1916).
