Research in China. In three volumes and atlas. 1(1). Descritive topography and geology; 1(2). Petrography and zoology; 2. Systematic geology; 3. The Cambrian faunas of China. A report on Ordovician fossils collected in eastern Asia in 1903-04. A report on Upper Paleozoic fossils collected in China 1903-04; [4.] Geographical and geological maps. (Complete).

      - Washington, DC, The Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1907-1913. In five parts (four text and plate volumes, one atlas). 4to (29.8 x 24.0 cm). Text with 101 plates, including six chromolithographs of birds, and geological maps; folio atlas (52.7 x 45.0 cm) with 42 mostly coloured geological and topographical maps (some with explanatory text or figures). Original printed wrappers.l Rare topographical, geological and faunal description of China and all that has been published. The atlas is particularly rare. The Carnegie Expedition to China was conceived by Charles Walcott, who wrote was to describe the rich Cambrian faunas. This results include the description and illustration of numerous fossils, among which the trilobites stand out. The (Recent) zoological part is restricted to vertebrates, mainly birds. It contains six fine, full colour plates and includes the description and illustration of a new subspecies of wren. Smaller sections are devoted to the herpetology, and the Mammalia. Collected beetles were mentioned but supposed to be described elsewhere. The folio atlas is by Bailey Willis, "geologist in charge". Next to Richthofen's "China Ergebnisse" (1877-1912), this is one of the major topographical and geological monographs on China. One text part wrapper and the atlas rather poorly repaired at edges. Front wrapper of atlas partly mounted. Small library stamps on cover. However, in all a very good, complete set. BMNH, V, 2329. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Boston: Herbert B. Turner & Company, 1907.. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] [i-iv] v [vi] ix-xix [xx: blank] 1-218 [219-220: blank] [note: text complete despite gap in pagination ("ix" should have been numbered "vii" etc.)], inserted frontispiece (sepia portrait of the novel's heroine), title page printed in black and red, original pictorial maroon cloth, front panel stamped in white, gold and silver, spine panel stamped in white. First edition. "A brief foreword by the director of an insane asylum in rural Pennsylvania establishes a narrative frame for the novel, introducing us to the author of the first-person memoir that makes up its bulk. Una Constance Mabie O'Brien was a quiet reclusive lady who sometimes fell into periods of extreme melancholia and wandered out into the snow one winter day and died of pneumonia soon thereafter. Her story begins on a lonely island in ante-bellum Maryland called Thomond where she spent her first carefree days. When her mother dies she is claimed by her father, a sinister-looking man who takes her to Philadelphia where he works in a company of actors (a disreputable profession at the time), part of whose repertoire is an adaptation of Spenser's 'The Faerie Queen.' When she turns 17 she hears from an uncle who has arranged a position for her as a nurse-governess in a house back on Thomond Island owned by a Dr. Brian O'Brien. On her arrival he tells Constance about her charge, six-year old Geraldine, who never speaks; he muses at dinner about putting some machinery inside her. When she is introduced to his wife she discovers, when she accidentally knocks her over as she is climbing the stairs, that the woman is a giant wax doll. The daughter is also a wax doll. Yet Dr. O'Brien insists on treating both as if they were alive. Constance is to give Geraldine daily three-hour lessons, which she agrees to, having no other realistic option for supporting herself. Dr. O'Brien is something of a ventriloquist and sometimes manages to make the dolls 'speak' at family dinners. He also has a laboratory where he performs anatomical experiments. The two become friends and eventually fall in love. They enjoy dressing up and staging theatricals for their own benefit. One night, after O'Brien's return from a trip, she is kept awake by a whirring noise, which turns out to be the saw he is using in his laboratory to cut open the skull of a dead woman. The next day he tells his story. He confesses that insanity runs in his family. When he was younger he fell in love with a beautiful woman named Margaret Archer, who gave him as a love token a drop of her blood on a crystal jewel, saying that if it ever lost its red color it would prove her false. This indeed happens one day and O'Brien flees in despair. Inspired by a reading of FRANKENSTEIN, he makes wax dolls of his dead mother and sister, trying for years to bring them to life. On a trip out of town (after the arrival of Una) he happens across the corpse of Margaret in a morgue. She had died after falling into drug addiction. He brings the corpse back to Thomond Island and was doing an autopsy on her brain when Una walked in. Nevertheless, as he continues the story of his life, he confesses his love to Una and they become engaged. On the day of their planned wedding, however, O'Brien apparently suffers a psychotic break and is confined to a sanitarium. When the Civil War breaks out he escapes, is shot while being recaptured and dies in the arms of Una. She is left penniless and eventually winds up in the asylum where the novel began. The novel has some of the genteel sentimentality typical of the period but offers a good deal of effectively weird atmosphere as it weaves together the themes of imagination, legends, dreams and madness." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 16. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 B-266. Former owner's pencil ownership signature on front free endpaper. The fragile white stamping is perished from the spine panel (but 99% intact on front cover), the spine ends have a touch of wear, a bright very good copy, nearly fine aside from the flaws mentioned. A scarce book. (#147921)

Das Internationale Schachmeisterturnier in Karlsbad 1907

Verlag der Wiener Schach-Zeitung, Wien (Vienna) 1907 - vii+426 pages with frontispiece and 3 other plates, diagrams and tables. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") issued in yellow wrappers with black lettering to spine and front wrapper. (Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5284) First edition. There were 4 famous Carlsbad tournaments, under the excellent supervision of Victor Tietz, president of the Carlsbad chess organization. the first one in 1907 (August 20 - September 17) did not have Lasker or Tarasch, but the younger generation (Rubinstein, Nimzowitsch, Vidmar) did establish itself and the middle-aged (Maroczy, Schlechter, Teichmann, Marshall, Janowski) had to make room for them. Rubinstein (15) won ahead of Marcoczy (14 1/2), Leonhardt (13 1/2), Nimzowitsch (12 1/2), Schlechter (12 1/2) and Vidmar (12). This work by Marco and Schechter, is a treasure house of insights, ideas and annotations. (Divinsky) The authors have created a masterpiece of chess literature. The book not only presents the games with unusually detailed notes, it also portrays the mood and feeling of the tournament - the atmosphere, the personalities and the myriad of creative talents and hidden foibles at work in each game. Marco's round introductions make us feel that we are there, evoking in us just the right frame of mind to fully appreciate the games that follow. Marco annotated games 1 through 151 and game 206; Schlechter provided notes to games 152 through 205 and games 207 through 210. (Karlsbad 1907 International Chess Tournament, Caissa editions) Condition: Edges chipped, some soiling, spine ends chipped, else a good to very good copy of a scarce chess item. Minor rubbing to extremities but a bright Near Fine copy of one of the rarest and most sought after post-1907 Golden Age "Alice" editions. This is only the second example of the fully sized 1907 edition we've seen in at least 25 years and the fact that it survived in superb condition is absolutely breath-taking. All later imprints were published in a smaller format and the true fully-realized proportions of Charles Robinson's illustrations were never reproduced. This edition is also worthy of note for being the first to portray Alice as she actually appeared in real life, with short bobbed brown hair instead of the usual flowing tresses favored by the other Golden Age "Alice" illustrators prior to the late 1920s. We have some exceedingly rare "Alice" books in stock, but this stands alone.. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Fine. Illus. by Charles Robinson.

Stuttgart: Franckh'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung W. Keller & Co., n.d. [1907].. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-80 + 8-page publisher's catalogue and additional advertising leaf on orange paper inserted at rear, Art Nouveau headpieces, original pictorial wrappers, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition, second printing. The third of Grunert's four collections of short SF. The title story was translated into English as "Enemies in Space" and appeared in INVADERS OF EARTH, a 1952 anthology edited by Groff Conklin. Short stories in the tradition of Kurd Lasswitz, but H. G. Wells and Jules Verne are equally important influences. "Kurd Lasswitz found an enthusiastic pupil in Carl Grunert (1865-1918), a schoolteacher from Berlin, who was, after Lasswitz, the pioneer of the SF short story in Germany and published a total (as far as is known today) of thirty-two stories in four collections and several magazines. The stories published after 1908 remained uncollected during his lifetime. While Lasswitz called his stories 'modern fairy tales,' Grunert labeled his 'novelettes of the future.' The collections are IM IRDISCHEN JENSEITS (The Hereafter on Earth, 1904), MENSCHEN VON MORGEN (Human Beings of Tomorrow, 1905), FEINDE IM WELTALL? (Enemies in Space?, 1907), and DER MARSSPION (The Martian Spy, 1908)." - Rottensteiner, story note, The Black Mirror & Other Stories, p. [59]. Bloch (2002) 1284. Nagl, p. 247 (misdating 1904). Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-181 [182: blank] [183: ads] [184: blank], figures in text, original maroon cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition, first binding with "Sonnenschein" printed at base of spine panel. C. H. Hinton (1853-1907) was concerned with finding ways of expanding the mind beyond the confines it had been taught to accept as final. His interest in the fourth dimension was the outcome of this search. He published his first essay on the topic, "What is the Fourth Dimension?," in 1880. In the famous analogy, pioneered by Edwin A. Abbott in FLATLAND (1884), and by Hinton himself in "A Plane World" (1886), a being of two dimensions would not be able to perceive a three dimensional object, such as a cube, and would perceive it in two dimensions only, as a square. In the same way, a man is not able to perceive any four dimensional objects, and if any are encountered, he explains them in terms of the familiar three dimensions. Hinton's "very strange story [AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND] describes a two-dimensional world rather more complicated than Abbott's, and features a startling plot in which the inhabitants of a two-dimensional planet avoid collision with another by diverting their 'world' in[to] the third dimension, taking advantage of the fact that -- like the human hero of 'An Unfinished Communication' -- their souls have access to more dimensions than their bodies." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 137. "At the time of his death, Hinton's last book, AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND ... was in press. We can fittingly regard this mature and mellow novel as Hinton's last testament. Any preconceptions of Hinton as some sort of narrow-minded crank are dispelled by the gentle self-irony of the book, which features two characters modeled on Hinton himself." - Rudy Rucker, "Life in the Fourth Dimension: C. H. Hinton and His Scientific Romances," Foundation 18 (January 1980), 12-18. Hinton's work was destined to be the inspiration for other writers whose works would eclipse his own. His scientific romances provided ideas that may have influenced the early work of H. G. Wells, and his speculations on multidimensionality inspired the better known speculations of P. D. Ouspensky.
