        Autograph letter signed

two pages n.d."Friday"[c.1907], London - To pioneering trades-unionist and suffragist Ivy Pretious, commiserating on a health matter: " . . . I was relieved to learn yesterday that they had not had to cut off a bit of your finger" and altering an arrangement to meet: "My wife has decided to stay in town on the night of the 12th. & I can't well manage to come to dinner. I am much disappointed, but vexatious things will happen." Pretious, illegitimate and adandoned as a child, was secretary of the Free Trade Union and one of the highest-paid women in the country. Russell was much invloved in the campaign for women's suffrage and in the final stages of his disastrous first marriage to Alys Pearsall Smith. He confided to Pretious his hope of "emancipation from my bondage before too long" but it is not clear whether their relationship was other than Platonic. Pretious married Lord Tennyson in 1909 and, on meeting her son in the 1950s, Russell requested he: "Tell Ivy that I think of her every . . . " and, searching for the correct interval, " . . . week." In excellent condition.

Songs of a Sourdough [With Original Letter and Inscription]

Toronto: William Briggs, 1907. Undetermined. very good. 1st Canadian Edition, "Author's Edition", green cloth variant. iv, 82 [1]pp. 12mo. Green cloth with gilt stamped lettering on spine, gilt lettering and triple vertical rule decoration on front cover. Slight bumping to corners and ends of spine. Stamp from W. S. Thomas on front pastedown. A few small spots of soiling on endpapers, outer edges and some of the pages within though generally the text block is clean and bright. Inscribed from author in brown ink on front free endpaper. the letter that relates to the book is on a sheet of thin white paper watermarked from the Canadian Bank of Commerce. The sheet is folded vertically to make 4 separate pages which measure 8" X 5". Service has written in brown ink on the front and rear of the folded page. The sheet has been folded two more times horizontally. The letter is generally clean and crisp with only slight soiling and a small stain. A second small brown note, not from Service but that was sent presumably with the letter, has also been included. The envelope contains the return address of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. It is slit at the top and slightly soiled. Postmarked on the back and over the stamp. The letter has been addressed by Service in brown ink. Presented in a beautiful green Morocco clamshell box with gilt raised bands. A1 a. (pp. 21) in Mitham (first ed.). Inscription in the book reads "Colonel Thomas with the compliments of the author. White Horse YT 20 June 1907". The signed letter written by Service accompanying the book is dated 1909 and is written to the same Colonel W. S. Thomas. In the letter Service thanks Thomas for the note and interest. He discusses the success of his new book (which is not yet ready for publication) and promises to send along a copy. The second note which accompanies the letter reads, intriguingly, "Dear 'Unc', Mr. Service is pretty much soiled- but I didn't soil him. Mr. Finger-print man will verify this. For see you have me quite frightened after yesterday's episode. [Signed]. Anyhow, I enjoyed him, especially 'Dan McGrew'." the letter was written during Service's time working as a bank clerk in the Yukon (hence the Canadian Bank of Commerce letterhead). The book to which Service refers to in his April 1909 letter is probably 'Ballads of a Cheechako' which was copyrighted in August and released in September of that year. The release of this book (his second following Songs of a Sourdough) was delayed as Briggs was unsure about publishing the volume at first due to lack of morality and coarse language (MacKay, Vagabond of Verse). However, with the threat of taking the book elsewhere, he eventually not only got Briggs to agree to publish the book but did so at an increased royalty (though with one ballad omitted and a few other small changes). A rare inscribed copy with fantastic letters to match. See illustration rear cover. 1907

        The South Polar Times

An exact reproduction of the South Polar Times magazine originally issued during the Antarctic expeditions of Robert F. Scott. "It has always seemed churlish to list this title under Shackleton, who only edited the first of the three volumes, for the publication arose during Scott's two expeditions. On the first of these, Shackleton was invalided home before its completion, while he was most decidedly not a member of the second Scott effort. Still, this should not detract from the publication, a lithographed facsimile of typescipts produced by members of Scott's party during three bleak Antarctic winters spent in his company." (Taurus).

Nordvestpassagen Beretning Om Gjß¡-Ekspeditionen 1903-1907 Med et TillÞ§ Av Premierlß©tnant Godfred Hansen [With Signed Letter from Roald Amundsen]

Kristiania [Oslo]: H. Aschehoug & Co.(W. Nygaard), 1907. Undetermined. near fine. 1st Edition. [xiii], xiv-xv, 511pp. Octavo. Full green cloth publishers binding with gilt ship and waves stamped to front board. Gilt titles and design of dolphins and waves to spine. Some very light shelfwear and bumping to corners, edges of boards, and head and tail of spine. Floral endpapers. All edges speckled. Clean and virtually free of foxing internally. With a letter of 5 lines, signed and dated by Amundsen, on a single sheet folded twice vertically. Folds with small tears, professionally repaired. A bright, attractive copy. near fine A beautiful copy of the true first edition of Amundsen's account of traversing the Northwest Passage. A goal of Arctic explorers for centuries, the Northwest Passage was first navigated completely by Amundsen in his small ship, the Gjß¡. Amundsen was deep in debt with creditors attempting to stop the expedition entirely. In the letter accompanying this book, Amundsen sarcastically refers to his financial situation, saying "I believe that taxman Garben in Drammen would be a brilliant head pilot in the Northwest Passage. He has all the qualifications for it. Drammen 25 April 1907. Roald Amundsen." Balthasar Oscar Garben was the tax collector in Drammen 1891-1909. Given that this debt almost prevented his historical voyage completely, the letter provides fascinating insight into Amundsen's somewhat cavalier attitude towards his debt upon his return. 1907

        Het Algiersche Paard [Algerian Horse]

Zutphen, Schillemans & Van Belkum, [Antwerp 1907 - Colour-printed lithograph by J.L. Goffart, after a painting by Otto Eerelman on heavy textured card. Very good condition. A rare and finely rendered portrait of a noble draft horse, from the limited Dutch edition of Eerelman's 'Paardenrassen Kunstalbum'. A skilled draftsman, watercolourist, and painter, Otto Eerelman was born in the Netherlandish village of Groningen in 1839, where he studied with the Dutch history painter J.H. Egenberger at the Minerva Academy. He later studied in Paris in 1867 and in Brussels from 1874 to 1876. After living in The Hague and Arnhem for several years, he returned to his hometown, where he became an instructor at the Minerva Academy. Although widely reputed for his paintings of the royal family, particularly Queen Wilhelmina, Eerelman was primarily known for his detailed renderings of horses. In 1907, Zutphen, Schillemans & Van Belkum published a Dutch edition of Paardenrassen Kunstalbum , a portfolio of chromolithographed plates based on paintings by Eerelman, which depict different breeds of draft horses.       London:: Alston Rivers Ltd.,. 1907.. First edition, Harvey 21. A truly scarce book. There are no other copies online at present, only 42 copies in libraries worldwide, and the last time it appeared at auction was in 1973. "The earlier in order of these poems are new. Others of the verse here printed appeared in volumes published, to all intents and purposes, privately, during the last few years. The responsibility for the selection must be borne by Mr. Edward Garnett." (According to Harvey, only two of the poems are new.) Edward William Garnett worked as an editor and reader for T. Fisher Unwin, Gerald Duckworth and Co. and then Jonathan Cape and, in 1898, introduced Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford, who later collaborated. It should be noted that Ford claimed the reviews of FROM INLAND were generous and yet sales came to only seventeen copies; but Harvey cautions against believing Ford's sales estimates as the number seventeen recurs in almost every description of sales. Judging from its scarcity, there can't have been many copies sold. Gray paperwraps printed on front only. Spine professionally repaired, filling in where few pieces missing; shallow chipping to edges of wraps; otherwise about very good. .

n.p., 1907. Hardcover. Fair. 77 photos. All but one measures approx. 9 x 9cm and are mounted six-to-a-page on both side of seven album leaves. The non-conforming photo is professional, measures about 30 x 21cm. and has been inserted in corner mounts inside the back cover. The rest are amateur photos. Detail generally Good to Very Good although a fair number are slightly out of focus or faded. First album leaf browned. Brief inked captions beneath all but about five of the uniform-sized photos. The large photo is also uncaptioned. One album leaf has been cut to remove one photo on each side. Additional stubs indicate that six leaves were removed from the end of this album. Contemporary oblong album (36 x 27cm.), lacking about half of backstrip. First page in album captioned Big Game Shooting in G. S. W. A. July-September 1907. Animals killed include impala, lechwe, wildebeest, and reedbuck. There are five photos here and there in the album identified as Chobe River. Some other hunting scenes seem to be in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). There is a photo of the Sanatarium Hotel in Kimberley and another photo of orange sellers to train passengers at Palachwe. Another photo is captioned "Our camp at Elephant Drift." Four rather indistinct photos are of his meerkat. A half dozen are of Cape Town (more water than land). Three photos are of a horse identified as "The Wombat" and further identified as "1st [??] S. Africa 1904-1908." Two or three others are of horse shows. or show horses. Four photos were taken in Durban and show various officers in the same cart drawn by a man wearing some sort of native regalia. The large photo is a high quality professional photo which shows a group of 28 unidentified soldiers in a group shot in dress uniforms, more than half wearing turbans or other head gear and appearing to be South Asians; the balance are British -- perhaps the missing pages would have provided contect for this photograph.

Circa 1907 copper bas-relief of Winston S. Churchill titled "RT. HON. W. CHURCHILL M.P."

This rare and striking item is a circa 1907 copper bas-relief of a very young Winston S. Churchill. This image dates from Churchill's period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. Churchill was appointed Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in late 1905 and by 1908 joined the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade at age 33. “Only Pitt, Palmerston, Peel, Gladstone, Harold Wilson and William Hague were appointed so young.” The bas-relief measures 7.25 x 5.5 inches, printed “RT. HON. W. CHURCHILL M.P.” at the bottom. Condition is quite good apart from a small hole at the upper center, ostensibly a nail hole from which this once hung in a British home, and a one inch diagonal crease at the lower left corner, where it was once bent. The artist is unknown. Churchilliana expert Douglas Hall discusses and dates this unusual item at p. 109 of The Book of Churchilliana: “The picture cannot pre-date 1907, but is clearly based on a photograph of a younger Churchill – probably around 1900 when he still had a full head of hair.” These are elusive; we are unaware of any but this one for sale in recent years. The one depicted in HallÂ’s book is framed in wood, which would be an aesthetically pleasing treatment of the item.

        A Dream of Fair Women

Grosset & Dunlap, New York 1907 - There is a small gift inscription on the ffep that keeps this book from being fine; otherwise it is clean, tight, square and unmarked. It comes with the publisher's box with the same illustration as that on the paste down on the front board and has the original glassine wrapping paper. The box is a little worn and has some pencil notes on the bottom surface. The boards are covered in brown cloth and gold titles on the front are embossed through the front paste down. There are darker brown titles on the spine. There are 20 full page color drawing by Fisher (including the frontispiece). The verses from the various poets are printed in black against the elaborate pink decorations by Crawford. This is a sumptuous book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Landhäuser [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hermann Muthesius (Autor)

Mann (Gebr.), Berlin, 1907.

Wien (Vienna): Verlag der Wiener Schach-Zeitung, 1907. vii+426 pages with frontispiece and 3 other plates, diagrams and tables. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") issued in yellow wrappers with black lettering to spine and front wrapper. (Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5284) First edition. There were 4 famous Carlsbad tournaments, under the excellent supervision of Victor Tietz, president of the Carlsbad chess organization. the first one in 1907 (August 20 - September 17) did not have Lasker or Tarasch, but the younger generation (Rubinstein, Nimzowitsch, Vidmar) did establish itself and the middle-aged (Maroczy, Schlechter, Teichmann, Marshall, Janowski) had to make room for them. Rubinstein (15) won ahead of Marcoczy (14 1/2), Leonhardt (13 1/2), Nimzowitsch (12 1/2), Schlechter (12 1/2) and Vidmar (12). This work by Marco and Schechter, is a treasure house of insights, ideas and annotations. (Divinsky) The authors have created a masterpiece of chess literature. The book not only presents the games with unusually detailed notes, it also portrays the mood and feeling of the tournament - the atmosphere, the personalities and the myriad of creative talents and hidden foibles at work in each game. Marco's round introductions make us feel that we are there, evoking in us just the right frame of mind to fully appreciate the games that follow. Marco annotated games 1 through 151 and game 206; Schlechter provided notes to games 152 through 205 and games 207 through 210. (Karlsbad 1907 International Chess Tournament, Caissa editions)Condition:Edges chipped, some soiling, spine ends chipped, else a good to very good copy of a scarce chess item.

Reykjavík, Iceland: Sigurdur Kristjánsson, 1907. Snorra Sturlusonar, aka Snorri Sturluson [1178-1241]. Þetta er ekki tvítyngd útgáfa. Skrifað í íslensku aðeins, ekki á ensku. This is not a bilingual edition. Written in Icelandic only, not in English. Modern Icelandic, via Old Icelandic, is derived from Old Norse, the language in which the Edda was recorded. This book is divided into the following sections: Formáli (Editor's preface); Prologus (Prologue); Gylfaginning (Tricking of Gylfi, or, Gylfi's empowerment); Skáldskaparmál (Language of poetry); Háttatal (102 stanzas divided into three sections); Nafnatal (Index); and Skyríngar Vísna (Notes). Approximately 7 x 4.5 inches. Originally issued in paper wrappers, and later bound in half leather of a light saddle-tan color, with crisp brown-stamped title and date to the spine, and with handsome marbled paper hardboards. Leather appears to be niger (goatskin) but may be morocco (calfskin). Unbumped spine head and tail and with sharp corners. An exceptionally clean and handsome binding, a pleasure to hold in one's hands. Text block firmly bound in. The original wrappers are not bound in. Attractively deckled page edges. VII and 429 numbered pages of text. Simple B&W decorative head-pieces. Just a hint of age toning to the pages. Small semi-crease to the upper corner of the last few pages, trivial. Else an impressively clean copy. Rated a Very Good Plus copy in a Near Fine custom binding. Rare in any condition. With thanks to Anthony Faulkes for the following: "Snorri's authorship is unequivocally confirmed... Whether he also wrote the commentary... is much less certain. His overall purpose in compiling the Edda [was] as a handbook for young poets. [A]s a result of Snorri's work there was a great awareness of poetic theory in late medieval Icelandic poets... As a composer of praise-poetry for the Norwegian court, Snorri is almost at the end of the tradition, and his aim of revitalizing the activity was not realized... Though Snorri is now celebrated mainly for his prose writing, particularly Heimskringla, but also for his mythological work in Gylfaginning and Skáldskaparmál, his contemporaries seem to have thought more highly of him as a poet."
