        Het Algiersche Paard [Algerian Horse]

Zutphen, Schillemans & Van Belkum, [Antwerp 1907 - Colour-printed lithograph by J.L. Goffart, after a painting by Otto Eerelman on heavy textured card. Very good condition. A rare and finely rendered portrait of a noble draft horse, from the limited Dutch edition of Eerelman's 'Paardenrassen Kunstalbum'. A skilled draftsman, watercolourist, and painter, Otto Eerelman was born in the Netherlandish village of Groningen in 1839, where he studied with the Dutch history painter J.H. Egenberger at the Minerva Academy. He later studied in Paris in 1867 and in Brussels from 1874 to 1876. After living in The Hague and Arnhem for several years, he returned to his hometown, where he became an instructor at the Minerva Academy. Although widely reputed for his paintings of the royal family, particularly Queen Wilhelmina, Eerelman was primarily known for his detailed renderings of horses. In 1907, Zutphen, Schillemans & Van Belkum published a Dutch edition of Paardenrassen Kunstalbum , a portfolio of chromolithographed plates based on paintings by Eerelman, which depict different breeds of draft horses.         FROM INLAND AND OTHER POEMS.

London:: Alston Rivers Ltd.,. 1907.. First edition, Harvey 21. A truly scarce book. There are no other copies online at present, only 42 copies in libraries worldwide, and the last time it appeared at auction was in 1973. "The earlier in order of these poems are new. Others of the verse here printed appeared in volumes published, to all intents and purposes, privately, during the last few years. The responsibility for the selection must be borne by Mr. Edward Garnett." (According to Harvey, only two of the poems are new.) Edward William Garnett worked as an editor and reader for T. Fisher Unwin, Gerald Duckworth and Co. and then Jonathan Cape and, in 1898, introduced Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford, who later collaborated. It should be noted that Ford claimed the reviews of FROM INLAND were generous and yet sales came to only seventeen copies; but Harvey cautions against believing Ford's sales estimates as the number seventeen recurs in almost every description of sales. Judging from its scarcity, there can't have been many copies sold. Gray paperwraps printed on front only. Spine professionally repaired, filling in where few pieces missing; shallow chipping to edges of wraps; otherwise about very good. .

Circa 1907 copper bas-relief of Winston S. Churchill titled "RT. HON. W. CHURCHILL M.P."

This rare and striking item is a circa 1907 copper bas-relief of a very young Winston S. Churchill. This image dates from Churchill's period as an ardent reformer and a bright star of the Liberal Party. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. Churchill was appointed Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in late 1905 and by 1908 joined the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade at age 33. “Only Pitt, Palmerston, Peel, Gladstone, Harold Wilson and William Hague were appointed so young.” The bas-relief measures 7.25 x 5.5 inches, printed “RT. HON. W. CHURCHILL M.P.” at the bottom. Condition is quite good apart from a small hole at the upper center, ostensibly a nail hole from which this once hung in a British home, and a one inch diagonal crease at the lower left corner, where it was once bent. The artist is unknown. Churchilliana expert Douglas Hall discusses and dates this unusual item at p. 109 of The Book of Churchilliana: “The picture cannot pre-date 1907, but is clearly based on a photograph of a younger Churchill – probably around 1900 when he still had a full head of hair.” These are elusive; we are unaware of any but this one for sale in recent years. The one depicted in HallÂ’s book is framed in wood, which would be an aesthetically pleasing treatment of the item.

Landhäuser [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hermann Muthesius (Autor)

Mann (Gebr.), Berlin, 1907.

Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") issued in yellow wrappers with black lettering to spine and front wrapper. (Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5284) First edition. There were 4 famous Carlsbad tournaments, under the excellent supervision of Victor Tietz, president of the Carlsbad chess organization. the first one in 1907 (August 20 - September 17) did not have Lasker or Tarasch, but the younger generation (Rubinstein, Nimzowitsch, Vidmar) did establish itself and the middle-aged (Maroczy, Schlechter, Teichmann, Marshall, Janowski) had to make room for them. Rubinstein (15) won ahead of Marcoczy (14 1/2), Leonhardt (13 1/2), Nimzowitsch (12 1/2), Schlechter (12 1/2) and Vidmar (12). This work by Marco and Schechter, is a treasure house of insights, ideas and annotations. (Divinsky) The authors have created a masterpiece of chess literature. The book not only presents the games with unusually detailed notes, it also portrays the mood and feeling of the tournament - the atmosphere, the personalities and the myriad of creative talents and hidden foibles at work in each game. Marco's round introductions make us feel that we are there, evoking in us just the right frame of mind to fully appreciate the games that follow. Marco annotated games 1 through 151 and game 206; Schlechter provided notes to games 152 through 205 and games 207 through 210. (Karlsbad 1907 International Chess Tournament, Caissa editions)Condition:Edges chipped, some soiling, spine ends chipped, else a good to very good copy of a scarce chess item.

        Edda

Reykjavík, Iceland: Sigurdur Kristjánsson, 1907. Snorra Sturlusonar, aka Snorri Sturluson [1178-1241]. Þetta er ekki tvítyngd útgáfa. Skrifað í íslensku aðeins, ekki á ensku. This is not a bilingual edition. Written in Icelandic only, not in English. Modern Icelandic, via Old Icelandic, is derived from Old Norse, the language in which the Edda was recorded. This book is divided into the following sections: Formáli (Editor's preface); Prologus (Prologue); Gylfaginning (Tricking of Gylfi, or, Gylfi's empowerment); Skáldskaparmál (Language of poetry); Háttatal (102 stanzas divided into three sections); Nafnatal (Index); and Skyríngar Vísna (Notes). Approximately 7 x 4.5 inches. Originally issued in paper wrappers, and later bound in half leather of a light saddle-tan color, with crisp brown-stamped title and date to the spine, and with handsome marbled paper hardboards. Leather appears to be niger (goatskin) but may be morocco (calfskin). Unbumped spine head and tail and with sharp corners. An exceptionally clean and handsome binding, a pleasure to hold in one's hands. Text block firmly bound in. The original wrappers are not bound in. Attractively deckled page edges. VII and 429 numbered pages of text. Simple B&W decorative head-pieces. Just a hint of age toning to the pages. Small semi-crease to the upper corner of the last few pages, trivial. Else an impressively clean copy. Rated a Very Good Plus copy in a Near Fine custom binding. Rare in any condition. With thanks to Anthony Faulkes for the following: "Snorri's authorship is unequivocally confirmed... Whether he also wrote the commentary... is much less certain. His overall purpose in compiling the Edda [was] as a handbook for young poets. [A]s a result of Snorri's work there was a great awareness of poetic theory in late medieval Icelandic poets... As a composer of praise-poetry for the Norwegian court, Snorri is almost at the end of the tradition, and his aim of revitalizing the activity was not realized... Though Snorri is now celebrated mainly for his prose writing, particularly Heimskringla, but also for his mythological work in Gylfaginning and Skáldskaparmál, his contemporaries seem to have thought more highly of him as a poet."
