Winston Churchill Signed Original Lithograph Portrait.

Original 1907 lithograph of The Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill M.P. by Reginald Haines. Signed by Winston Churchill on the bottom right hand corner. Double matted and framed. The lithograph measures 7.5 inches by 10 inches. The entire piece measures 15.5 inches by 18 inches. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupied by foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War, and a UK-backed coup d'etat in Iran. Domestically his government laid great emphasis on house-building. Churchill suffered a serious stroke in 1953 and retired as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained a Member of Parliament until 1964. Upon his death aged ninety in 1965, Elizabeth II granted him the honour of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.

        Jock of the Bushveld

London: Longmans, Green and Company, 1907. First edition, first issue with drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back on pages 65, 337 and 457. Octavo, original green cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel. Boldly signed by Percy Fitzpatrick on the title page. In excellent condition with the spine gilt bright and light rubbing to the extremities. First printings signed by Fitzpatrick are rare. Jock of the Bushveld was first published in 1907 when it became an instant best seller and a classic. Since then it has never been out of print and it has been the subject for a South African film. The author, Percy Fitzpatrick later recounted these adventures as bedtime stories to his four children. Rudyard Kipling, a good friend of Fitzpatrick, also took part in these story-telling evenings and eventually persuaded him to collect these tales in book form.

Collection of New York Motorcycle Club announcements: seven postal cards from the club's secretary and two postcards from its most famous member, Glenn Curtis

New York City and Hammondsport, 1907. Unbound. Very good. The seven multi-color illustrated 1-cent McKinley postal cards (Scott #UX18) are announcements of New York Motorcycle Club lectures, runs, rides, and hillclimbs; these were sent by the club secretary and were postmarked in New York City. Two postcards featuring Glenn Curtis (one on a motorcycle and one flying an airship); were franked with 1-cent green Franklin stamps (Scott #300) and postmarked from Curtis's hometown, Hammondsport, New York. The New York Motorcycle Club, one of if not the first motorcycle clubs in the United States, was organized sometime prior to 1903 when it merged with the Alpha Motorcycle Club of Brooklyn to form the Federation of American Motorcyclists, the first predecessor of today's American Motorcycle Association. At the time these cards were sent, Dwight Patterson was the club Vice-President. Glenn Curtis was an early member of the club and won the first American hillclimb, which the club sponsored. Both of the cards featuring were sent from Curtis's hometown of Hammondsport. One is a real photo postcard (RPPC) showing Curtis flying a dirigible; it is captioned "Curtis Descending, 6/18-07 Hammondsport, N.Y." and postmarked two weeks later. The other is of Curtis sitting upon his famous V-8 motorcycle with which he set a world speed record for any vehicle in 1907; it is also postmarked from Hammondsport in 1907 and contains a short manuscript note, likely written by Curtis, that reads, "8 cylinder club meets at Hammondsport come and bring your 8 cyl." The seven multi-color event postal cards were likely printed using a Cyclostyle copier, an early mimeograph-like machine that could print in different colors. The events promoted include: a lecture on blowouts by a Goodyear Tire representative, the Second Club Run, a Blind Run, the Decoration Day Hillclimb, five Short Ride Abouts for June, a hillclimb planning meeting, and dinner ride to Brewster. A terrific grouping of early ephemera from one of the first motorcycle clubs in the United States and its most famous member. As of 2018, nothing similar for sale in the trade; no similar institutional holdings listed at OCLC, and no auction records of similar albums identified by ABPC nor the Rare Book Hub.

The New York Times heralded the pictures as 'indescribably quaint and bewitching.'         Engineers Club Inaugural Banquet Commemorative of the Opening of the New Club House on which occasion Mr. Andrew Carnegie will be the guest of honor Monday, the ninth of December 1907

New York: Engineer's Club, 1907 Signed by Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, and Andrew Carnegie (who has signed twice), and others. This event commemorated the opening of the Engineers Club's fabulous new home at 32 West 40th Street on Bryant Park in New York. Opening with oysters and closing with petits fours, this gathering of American industrialists was entertained by Samuel Clemens, which has signed the volume as Mark Twain. The author's friend Andrew Carnegie paid for the club, and Twain roasted him gently, stating in part, "just look at Mr. Carnegie's face. It is all scintillating with fictitious innocence. You might think that he had never committed a crime." The elegant volume, engraved by Tuffany & Co., is illustrated with a portrait of Carnegie, a view of the building, and images of the previous two club houses. It is accompanied by Swasey's original engraved invitation and printed list of attending members and dinner seating. Laid in are newspaper accounts of the event. Very rare. We have not seen another example. Provenance: Ambrose Swasey, the Cleveland mechanical engineer, industrialist, and philanthropist. Original Scottish tartan silk, gilt stamped. Engraved by Tiffany & Co., New York. Rebacked in black cloth. 8 leaves and 23 pp list of members, menu, and seating plans. Very good condition. Half morocco case.

Photo Album]: British in India 1904-1907

India 1907 - Oblong folio measuring 10.5" x 15". Cream colored stiff boards. Contains 65 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 9.5" x 11" with captions. Heavily foxed with tears and chipped corners thus good only with very good photographs with some fading, tears, and abrasions.A photo album kept by a group of British expatriates in India in 1904. Beginning with a Christmas picnic in Muzaffarpur in 1904 the group is pictured wearing pith helmets and lounging on fallen tree branches and enjoying a Christmas feast spread out on a blanket. The picnic was held under the famous Lychee trees of the city. Various candids and snapshots are scattered throughout the album featuring family pets, children playing, and people posing in gardens. One section of photos from 1905 shows the Sonepore Race Meet featuring photos of the Commissioner's Camp, polo ground, and the animals themselves. Beginning in the 1800s the British Raj used Sonepur as the location of an annual race in November. This time had traditionally been used as an animal trade fair by the Hindu locals and some of those customs continued through the transition from fair to race. Landowners in the area set up large carpeted tents for lounging as well as accompanying sleeping and bathing tents for the elite visitors who came to see the anticipated event. For the British population it was a huge social event which not only involved horse races and polo matches but dinners and dancing. The ballroom that was set up for the 1905 event can be seen beyond the polo ground including well-dressed British women meeting with riders and their horses, and images of the encampment. The group went into what is now present day Pakistan on a few occasions. Some photos show a tented encampment at the Khyber Pass and the rice mills of the area. One image of a British man on a horse in captioned, "surveying Khyber," and is accompanied by a photo of a group of turbaned Indian men. Two large photos show the chaos of Bannu City on market day with enormous crowds of people. In Bannu they took photos of the fort, a British church, and the people of the city. A photo from Darjeeling in 1906 shows a wedding party posing for a large group photograph. An interesting look at the British upper class in India during the early 1900s.

        The Spirit of the People.

London: Alston Rivers, Ltd,, 1907. An Analysis of the English Mind. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with gilt-stamped decoration, top edge gilt. Spine slightly faded, contents lightly foxed. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Mr. and Mrs. Marwood always aff[ectionate]ly from Ford M. H. October 28th MCMVII". Arthur Marwood (1868–1916), the recipient, was a close friend of Ford's: "after Madox Brown, Conrad, and James, he was to become the most important man in Ford's life and in his writing" (Saunders, p. 209). The two met in 1905, when they became neighbours — Marwood had moved to Winchelsea, seeking a milder climate for his tuberculosis. "In Marwood, Ford discovered a new species of Englishman: the 'real Englishman' par excellence — for certain purposes, the 'real' Englishman" (Meixner, p. 200). Indeed, Ford might well have been thinking of Marwood when he penned the dedication of this title, "To the most English of all". When Marwood died from tuberculosis in 1916, his death impressed Ford "more profoundly than any since those of his father and grandfather" (Saunders vol. II, p. 5). Ford wrote of him in Thus to Revisit (1921): "he had the deepest and widest intelligence of all the men I ever met". The character of Christopher Tietjens, the protagonist of Ford's war tetralogy (1924–1928), was partly a tribute to Marwood, "from whom he took Tietjens's grand Yorkshire background, mathematical skills and habit of 'tabulating from memory the errors in the Encyclopaedia Britannica'" (LRB, Vol. 34, No. 19). From the collection of Thomas Moser, Professor of English at Stanford University, though unmarked as such; he published a psychological biography of Ford Madox Ford in 1980.
