Art Work of Seattle & Alaska. In Nine Parts

Racine, Wisconsin: The W.D. Harney Photogravure Company , 1907. Racine, Wisconsin: The W.D. Harney Photogravure Company , 1907. Original Wraps. First Edition. Tall thin folios. [26]pp. of text running throughout the nine parts. Illustrated with more than one hundred photogravures in blue tone and sepia. The wrappers are in various states of 'Good to Very Good+ (the cloth spine missing from part 2; present but loose on part 9, resulting in the front cover being detached; some fading & offsetting to a few covers, a few with minor spotting); the contents however are universally Near Fine or better, with the original protective tissues. A completely acceptable set of this scarce pictorial work, highlighting the culture and natural beauty of Seattle and Alaska, as well as the architecture, maritime trade, etc. // Noteworthy for the large concentration of Asahel Curtis images, and not to be confused with the other compilations of "art work" of various parts of the Pacific Northwest issued around the same time (of which there were several.) "Associate artists" in this volume were W.P. Romans, Frank H. Nowell, Ashale Curtis, Thomas W. Tolman and Wylie T. Dennison. The text was written by Thomas Nowell.         LEE AND HIS GENERALS CHROMOLITHO PRINT

Np: George Bagby Matthews, 1907. Softcover. 26.75 " w X 15.5 " h . Framed chromolithograph. Moderately toned and archivally framed. George Bagby Matthews (1857-1935) was born in Virginia. He studied in Paris with portrait painter Carolus Duran before commencing a career in and around Washington, DC. Drawn to historical subjects, Matthews is best known for his depictions of Lee and His Generals, The Battle of the Merrimac and the Monitor, and The Last of the Wooden Navy. Although Many of the figures painted in MatthewsÕ fine image of Lee and His Generals had never gathered together during the War, and a number of the Generals were dead by the WarÕs end, this Matthews print was much praised for the poignant and chivalrous presentation of the Confederate military.         The Romance of the King's Army [with fore-edge painting]

Hodder & Stoughton 1907 - 8vo. ppvii 310. illustrated with photos. bound in full red calf by Bickers, with gilt decoration to spine and all edges gilt. light rubbing to joints, otherwise in very good condition. 1909 school prize inscription to preliminary blank leaf. with a good quality fore-edge painting showing a mounted knight at the gallop with pennants flying; the painting executed in the style of a medieaval tapestry. Whilst it is not always easy to date fore-edge paintings, I am confident that this example is not a modern work, probably from the early 20th century, and it is of a higher standard than many of the rather crude efforts that are often seen. A 'fore-edge painting' is a curious art form, where the artist creates his hidden painting on the leading edge of a book's pages when the pages are fanned out. When the book is closed, gilt or marbling is applied to the page edges and the painting is not visible until the pages are again fanned out. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Shinran: Jodo Shin (Jodo Shinsu) Story and Sect Manual, Silk Bound, 1907

unknown: unknown, 1907 (unknown place) circa 1907: Ornately bound text, apparently dedicated to, and about, the Buddhist Monk (1173-1263), founder of the Jodo Shin (Jodo Shinsu) Buddhist sect; and about, or a manual for, the sect itself. In Japanese. Unpaginated. 12mo, silk bound, All Edges Gilt. Thread-bound ornate covers, black and gilt, appear to be in near fine condition to this eye. There is some soiling to the gilt page edges. Contents, which appear to be of rice paper, are lightly and homogeneously toned, hence also fine. A Japanese acquaintance has identified this piece as dating from 1907. His English is certainly, at least, better than my Japanese, and he added: "Then, we asked the great priest of the acquaintance. First, it turned out that this is all the books about 'SHINRAN' which is the founder of the Jodoshin sect. It praises, sings that is, means xx as gospel. I hear that the contents can go to an after-death paradise if the Shinran Saint's 'NAMUAMIDABUTSU' is recited. It is 'MONTO-NO-KOKOROE' which is written on the very last picture. That is, it is a manual of the Jodoshin sect. I think that it turns out that it is detailed if it asks the priest of the Jodoshin sect." Not illustrated, so I don't know about the reference to the "very last picture"; but this is, in any case, a gorgeous piece. L41n

An electrical method of counting the number of [alpha]-particles from radioactive substances.London: Harrison & Sons for The Royal Society, 1908.

First edition, the invention of the Geiger counter. This device made possible the famous alpha-particle scattering experiment carried out by Geiger and Marsden which led Rutherford to the discovery of the atomic nucleus.<br/><br/> "In 1907 Rutherford was translated to the chair of physics in the University of Manchester. Here he found a young graduate of Erlangen, Hans Geiger, with whom he devised [in the present paper] an electrical method of counting the alpha-particles directly, the Geiger counter as it has since been generally called... This counting of atoms one by one was a great achievement" (Whittaker, <i>History of Theories of Aether and Electricity</i>, Vol. I, p. 7). <br/><br/> The detector devised by Geiger consisted of a wire in a low-pressure chamber with a voltage applied across the wire and the outside of the tube. The voltage is high enough that a current can almost, but not quite, flow through the gas. When an ionizing particle came into contact with the wire, it disturbs the system enough to complete the circuit, and the resulting completion can be detected by an audible click or by a pointer, depending on the type of counter. <br/><br/> Once it was possible to reliably detect, and therefore count, alpha particles, Rutherford devised an experiment to determine the charge on an alpha particle. In 'The charge and nature of the [alpha]-particle' (pp. 162-73 in the present issue), Rutherford and Geiger report the results of that experiment, namely that the charge on an alpha-particle is twice the electronic charge. <br/><br/> Hans Geiger (1882-1945) studied physics at the University of Munich and served in the German military before pursuing graduate studies at Erlangen, earning his PhD in 1906 with a thesis on electrical releases through gases. He then moved to England to become a laboratory assistant in Rutherford's laboratory at the University of Manchester. In 1909 he conducted the famous 'gold foil experiment' with Ernest Marsden, and in 1911 he and John Nuttall discovered the 'Geiger-Nuttall law' relating the rate of radioactive decay to the energy of the emitted alpha-particles. In 1914, Geiger returned to Germany, initially to take charge of radiation research at the National Institute for Science and Technology. After World War I, during which he served as an artillery officer, Geiger returned to research, finding a position at the University of Kiel where he collaborated with one of his doctoral students, Walther Muller, on improving his original Geiger counter device, making it more efficient, responsive, durable and portable. Unlike the earlier version, which could detect only alpha particles, the new improved Geiger-Muller counter could detect many different kinds of ionizing radiation. He used the new device to confirm the existence of light quanta in 1925, and later to discover cosmic ray showers, which would claim his scientific attention for the remainder of is career. Geiger was a member of the so-called Uranium Club, a clandestine German effort to develop and produce atomic weapons after the discovery of atomic fission in 1939. The program splintered in 1942, with its scientists moving to other areas of research deemed more urgent, after it was determined (incorrectly) that nuclear fission would not play a major role in ending the war.. In: Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series A, Vol. 81, No. 546, August 27, 1908, pp. 141-161. The entire issue offered here in original grey printed wrappers.       1907 - [Folk Art]. [American Primitive-Style Hooked Rug, Dated 1907]. 25" x 40, mounted to wooden frame. * The hooked rug with bound edges has a large eagle in the center below the date 1907 against a background of stars and other decorative devices. The position of the eagle's head and wings, and what appears to be a shield below its body, suggests that it is a version of the Great Seal of the United States. A unique piece.

2 kg.

        Four Autographed Notes and Letters

Vienna, 1907. unbound. Small archive encompassing three letters to a former student from the United States named Elsie Russell, who had studied piano under Leschetizky in the mid-1890s and who went on to have a successful career in her own right. All signed in full. Included is a letter of recommendation, 8vo, 1 page, 7.5 x 5 inches, Wien, March 27, 1897, written in German, stating that, "Miss Elsie Russell, who studied piano with him...showed excellent understanding and he believes that as a performer and teacher she will go on to great success ('vielon erfolg')." The second item in this collection is an autographed note signed on a colorful picture postcard of "Villa Leschetizky," 3.5 x 5.5 inches, Feldgasse, Bad Ischl, Austria, September 12, 1903, in German, sending thanks to his former student for her friendly communication ("Lebenzeichen") and returning his best wishes. The third item is an autographed note signed on a Correspondence card with an engraving of his town house, 3.5 x 5.5 inches, Vienna, January 7, 1907, in German, thanking [the now married] Mrs. Elsie Russell Tarecki for her kindness and sending best wishes for the New Year ("Neujahr's Grussen"). The fourth item is an important autographed letter signed by Eugenie Leschetizky -- a former pupil who became the professor's fourth wife in 1894 and who is said to have controlled his affairs with an iron fist, 8vo, 4 pages, written front and back on a single, folded piece of paper, 6.75 x 8.5 inches, Vienna, April 7, no year, circa 1899, in English, in small part: "I realize completely that you would like very much to come to Europe again...but having talked to Professor, he thinks you ought not do it just now - because you have such a fine start and an absence of a few months may spoil it a great deal...Professor ceases teaching this year much earlier than before because he has not taken any rest at Easter...So you see, you won't not [sic] get even the chance of a few lessons with Professor...You have gone through such good preparatory studies...that Professor thinks it quite useless for you to begin them again. You asked Professor's advice in the question of you coming to Vienna and that is the reason why I give it to you so frankly...instead of encouragement. Professor has not been very well this winter, his liver has not been in a good state again...his lessons here have been three a day...the classes only once in a fortnight." Very good condition. Acclaimed Polish pianist, professor, and composer who was one of the founders of The St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music in 1862. Among his most gifted students were Igance Paderewski, Artur Schnabel, Alexander Brailowsky, and Anna Yesipova.
