ACROSS WIDEST AFRICA: An Account of the Country and People of Eastern, Central and Western Africa as Seen During a Twelve Month's Journey From Djibuti to Cape Verde

London Hurst and Blackett 1907 - 2 volumes. First edition. With 160 illustrations from photographs and a large color folding map at rear. Thick 8vo, publisher’s original navy blue cloth gilt lettered and ruled on the spines and covers. xv, 396, [4 ads]; xii, 511, [1 ad] pp. A very pleasing, well preserved and handsome set, the cloth clean and very solid, quite fresh but for the lightest evidence of shelving, internally solid and clean, the plates and folding map in excellent order. SCARCE. This is the account of the first journey taken across Africa at its widest point with "pleasure as its sole object," covering over 8,500 miles in a space of 364 days. Like much of Savage-Landor’s work, these two volumes have since become fixtures in any collection of Africana. They are replete with photographs and descriptions of the circumstances of Africa at the turn of the century. Savage-Landor is known not only for his writings of his African travels, but also his accounts of Tibet, China, South America, Europe, and numerous points in between. A desirable set of this Africana classic. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        OUR BABY BOOK

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, (1907). First edition Bound in blue cloth with beautiful color pictorial pastedown on the front cover. Small quarto, unpaginated. Twelve glorious full page illustrations and ornamental borders in the Art Nouveau style. This book, along with Fanny Cory's Mother Goose, represent a particularly poignant time in the author's family life and both are considered amongst her best work. After losing her first baby in childbirth and suffering other deep personal losses Fanny entered a period of profound grief. She struggled to regain her natural sense of joy, eventually giving birth to three children and creating illustrations that captured her hard won happiness in domestic life. This book is not only an exceptional work of art but a mirror into the artist's home and heart, written and illustrated from her own intimate personal experiences as a mother . It has become a very elusive and sought after title for collectors of finely illustrated books from the turn of the last century. Aside from some very light flecking on the front cover, not affecting the pictorial pastedown, this is a very good copy.

LOVE OF LIFE and Other Stories

1907. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1907. 4 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt and cream. First Edition, consisting of 7,973 copies, of this collection of eight tales.~He needed the money badly, for he had overspent his income to satisfy his various desires. As well as paying for his ranch and his growing number of dependents, he was beginning to squander a fortune on building a boat called the "Snark" for his seven years' voyage... He returned to panning out a living from Alaska in the stories collected in a volume with "Love of Life." His confidence in his own tenacity was shown in that extraordinary story of man's will to survive at all costs. Yet the instability of his long sickness also appeared in "The Sun-Dog Trail." In that underestimated story of a man and woman bent on vengeance against another man, the reason for action is hidden, and the white silence of the north is as ambiguous as it is murderous... Reality and appearance, willpower and dream, are all confused in a last reckoning. [Sinclair]~As always, the title leaf is a cancel. This is a bright copy, fine except for a damaged corner of the front paste-down (and the slightest of rubbing at the extremities); there is none of the usual flaking of the cream-colored front cover border. In nice condition this is a none-too-common London title. Sisson & Martens p. 36; Blanck 11904.

Silver gelatin print of the crew of Australia Station survey vessel

Sydney?,: circa May, 1907.. Silver gelatine photograph, 145 x 195 mm. (image size), within closed contemporary card mount with pen manuscript note to rear "from Charles Doylend, H.M.S. Penguin Australia", and pencil annotation in a second hand "Mrs Doylend... 15/5/07"; very good condition. Rare original photograph of the crew and lower-ranking officers of HMS Penguin taken circa 1907. This appears to be the only recorded photograph of the crew, apparently taken shortly after they had completed their work surveying the Great Barrier Reef. As a result, this is a significant record of an important surveying vessel, and it is also interesting to note that several men of Pacific Islander descent are present as full able seamen.HMS Penguin was a barque-rigged sloop launched from Glasgow in 1876. In January 1890 conversion work was completed preparatory for the vessel being sent to Pacific and Australian waters. Over the following seventeen years (or six full commissions) the Penguin surveyed the Pacific cable route and broke existing records for deep soundings off Tonga and the Kermadec archipelago. Notably, through 1905-1906 she undertook hazardous survey work on the Great Barrier Reef, correcting past errors and continuing the trigonometric survey of the Queensland coast. The Penguin was an ideal vessel for this hydrographic survey work of the Australian coastline: too slow for a modern fighting vessel, her reliability, seaworthiness and shallow draught made her perfect for the job (see an excellent note at http://www.navy.gov.au/HMAS_Penguin_%28I%29).A contemporary pencil note to the mount of this image suggests the photograph was taken on 15 May 1907. This would certainly accord with the known details of the Penguin, which had completed its Great Barrier Reef survey work late in 1906. The vessel arrived in Sydney in January 1907 and was finally paid off on 31 March of that year, preparatory to becoming a depot ship on Sydney Harbour. Indeed, the relaxed and informal posing of the crew here tends to suggest that the putative date of May 1907 is quite likely, as the image has the feel of a graduating class. Significantly, no other image of the crew is known to exist, although there is an almost contemporary image of the officers held in the Australian War Memorial, dated 1909 (http://cas.awm.gov.au/photograph/301157).

Strangely enough Futrelle (an American) was in Europe in 1912 seeing publishers and exploring new ground for his stories; he decided to return home on a brand new ship called the Titanic, and is numbered amongst the lost of that disaster. Fuller was an early disciple of English poet and magician Aleister Crowley and was very familiar with his, and other forms of, magick and mysticism. Roosevelt expresses his regret at not being able to be with Carnegie at the International Peace Conference at the Hague: "- I much regret my inability to be present with you - First and foremost, I beseech you to remember that tho it is our bounden duty to work for peace, yet it is even more our duty to work for righteousness and justice - Harm and not good would result if the most advanced nations, those in which most freedom for the individual is combined with most efficiency in securing orderly justice as between individuals, should by agreement disarm and place themselves at the mercy of other peoples less advanced, of other peoples still in the stage of military barbarism or military despotism. Anything in the nature of general disarmament would do harm and not good if it left the civilized and peace-loving peoples, those with the highest standards of municipal and international obligation and duty, unable to shock the other peoples who have no such standards, who acknowledge no such obligations - These warnings that I have uttered do not mean that I believe we can do nothing to advance the cause of international peace. On the contrary, I believe that we can do much to advance it, provided we act with sanity, with self-restraint, with power; which must be the prime qualities in the achievement of any reform. The nineteenth century saw, on the whole, a real and great advance in the standard of international conduct, both as among civilized nations and by strong nations toward weaker and more backward peoples. The twentieth century will, I believe, witness a much greater advance in the same direction - More important than reducing the expense of the implements of war is the question of reducing the possible causes of war, which can most effectually be done by substituting other methods than war for the settlement of disputes. Of those other methods the most important which is now attainable is arbitration -" A carefull, lengthy, and eloquent statement from this President, who, perhaps more than any others in the nation's history, has been charcterized as an imperialist and a warmonger

        THE TRIUMPH OF MAMMON

London: E. Grant Richards, 1907.. Gilt cloth, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Minor rubbing, usual slight offsetting to endsheets, but a very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by the author to his publisher on the title-page: "To my dear E. Grant Richards John Davidson April 11. 07." This work constitutes Part I of a projected trilogy Davidson intended for publication under the general title of GOD AND MAMMON, but his suicide preceded completion of third volume. Part II, MAMMON AND HIS MESSAGE, was published in 1908. Colbeck speculates that copies with the spine imprint of "E. Grant Richards," and with a terminal catalogue, as here, may be the earliest binding state, and this presentation would likely confirm that hypothesis. NCBEL III:620. STONEHILL 36. COLBECK I:183.

The Illustrated London News was published weekly until 1971 when it became a monthly, and then bimonthly from 1989 until 1994. From 1994 until production ceased in 2003 it was published just twice a year.<br><br>A beautifully preserved collection of this noted London paper, complete, in tact, and in very good condition.         THE SECRET AGENT

1907. [a remarkably FINE copy] A Simple Tale. London: Methuen & Co., (1907). 40 pp ads dated Sept 1907. Original deep red cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First Edition of this tale of espionage sited in Russia. The idea for the story came from an actual 1890s revolutionary attempt to blow up the Observatory at Greenwich. Conrad initially planned this to be a short story (titled "Verloc"); however, as he "got into" it, he lengthened it into a full-blown novel. He then strove to make it a popular novel, one that would provide him with the cash he needed to get out from under pressing debts; however, after an initial flourish, sales dropped off and the book was not reprinted until 1914, after the success of CHANCE reawakened interest in Conrad. ~The initial printing consisted of 2,500 copies, including 500 for the colonies and 500 for Canada. However, the good initial reception of the book prompted the publisher to use the colonial copies for the domestic market instead, replacing the colonial half-title and title with the standard domestic one -- "there is no visible evidence of cancellation and for all practical purposes we must regard these copies as indistinguishable from the regular domestic issue" [Cagle].~This is AN UNUSUALLY FINE, BRIGHT COPY (one faint dent in the fore-edge of each board, but otherwise with neither wear nor soil); the original endpapers show no cracking, and there is none of the often-pervasive foxing. In our experience LORD JIM, YOUTH and THE SECRET AGENT are the toughest of Conrad&#39;s first published editions to find in collectible condition. Cagle A12a(1); a "Modern Library 100" selection and a "Connolly 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement" selection. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

Nearest the Pole A Narrative of the Polar Expedition of the Peary Arctic Club in the SS Roosevelt, 1905 Ð 1906

NF. With: tipped in letter signed by Peary to Henry L. Smith, Charles ScribnerÕs Sons, publisher & dated the year of publication, 1907.& & London, Hutchinson & Co. 1907. First UK Edition. Sm4to, , 410pp., Index, Color frontispiece with tissue guard, 95 sepia toned photos, Index, 2 large colour fold-out maps bound at rear. A Near Fine and well preserved copy. Ñ Arctic Bibliography # 13226.& & An account of Commander Robert Edwin Peary, USN regarding his second unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole in 1906. Peary did get closer to the Pole than any previous expedition had been able to achieve, and he learnt many lessons that were to prove invaluable on his next attempt in 1909 when he claims to have finally reached the North Pole. Peary made eight Arctic voyages via the Greenland coast and in 1891-1892 arrived on the east coast by crossing the ice. On this his 1906 exhibition, Peary, aboard the ROOSEVELT, was forced to turn back 175 miles from his objective. He passed Ellesmere Land to Cape Sheridan and the Arctic Basin, returning home along the coast of Greenland. Peary also gives his own account of the dangerous voyage from New York into what were then unknown and mysterious seas.

[HOLMES&#39;S COPY] SENATE MANUAL, CONTAINING THE STANDING RULES AND ORDERS OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good and scarce. Contains the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, etc. Revised under the direction of the Senate Committee on Rules, 59th Congress. Bound in full black morocco leather with marbled endpapers and edges, recently rebacked and retaining nearly all of the original spine. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.&#39;s copy with "Mr. Justice Holmes" stamped in gilt on the front cover. In 1902 Holmes was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. Holmes became famous for his liberal interpretations of the United States Constitution and was known as the "Great Dissenter" because of his disagreement with the views of his colleagues on the Court. This copy has twenty or so gilt-lettered leather index tabs pasted to the appropriate fore-edge margins with two tabs no longer present. The only writing present is, interestingly, in the sections toward the end listing members of both the Supreme Court and the Cabinet which have about a dozen or so updates in ink in block lettering in a minuscule neat hand, possibly Holmes&#39;s but we are not certain. In any case, a rare example of a working copy of a book from this great Supreme Court Justice&#39;s library.

        ITALIAN VILLAS AND THEIR GARDENS

New York: The Century Co, 1907. First Edition, later issue. Profusely illustrated with 52 illustrations, 27 of which are colourplates or half tones by Maxfield Parrish, the rest being photographs and drawings by E. Denison, Malcolm Fraser and C. A. Vanderhof. Tall 8vo, publisher&#146;s original dark forest green cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine, cover design by Decorative Designers with elaborate pictorial decorations after Maxfield Parrish in an all over design, upper cover stamped in gilt and blocked in light green, blue, purple, gilt and rust, showing a villa garden. 270 pp. A handsome copy well preserved, the corners and tips in pleasing condition, the binding clean and with very little wear, very light evidence of age. A pleasing example of this very important, beautifully illustrated book. SCARCE FIRST EDITION, AND A HANDSOME COPY OF THE 1907 ISSUE OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND SOUGHT AFTER WORK. One of the most well-written books on Italian garden design. The combination of Wharton&#146;s liquid descriptions and Parrish&#146;s romantic paintings, makes for an extremely delightful book. Special attention is given to the gardens found at Florentine, Sienese and Roman villas. The relationship of the buildings to the natural surroundings is explored in detail. &#147;The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the difficulty of cultivating any but spring flowers in so hot and dry a climate, and the result has been a wonderful development of the more permanent effects to be obtained from the three other factors in garden-composition - marble, water and perennial verdure - and the achievement, by their skillful blending, of a charm independent of the seasons.&#148; The format and decorative binding and illustration are the same as in the first issue.
