Land and Housing Reform by Winston S. Churchill, first edition first printing, bound in Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1907 Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

Here is quite a rarity - significant both bibliographically and to collectors. This is a very early and seldom seen Churchill speech. On 20 April 1907, a young Winston S. Churchill gave a speech on Land and Housing Reform at Drury Lane Theatre in London. At the time, Churchill was a rising star of the Liberal Party serving as Under-Secretary for the Colonies under Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. This is the first edition, only printing of this speech. It is bound by the Liberal Publications Department in a volume containing speeches and pamphlets for the year 1907. Fascinating to note, this appears to be the only printing of the full text of this speech. The speech appears on pages 779 to 782 of Volume I of the Complete Speeches published in 1974, but this 1907 first printing of the speech contains significant amounts of text not included in the Complete Speeches presentation. Further, there are fascinating notes on the introduction of Winston Churchill and on the audience ("The theatre was crowded to its utmost capacity with an audience of 4,000 people.") There is even a notation in the text of a comment shouted from the audience and Churchill's reply. The volume in which the speech is bound contains pamphlets and leaflets published before 16 November 1907. Bound in a black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed buckram covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is very good. The leather spine shows minor wear, particularly at the head and tail, but retains bright gilt and shows no cracking to the leather. The green cloth top board is clean and bright with minor corner wear. The rear board has a bump to the lower corner and some small white spots, but is otherwise sound and bright. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition. The binding is tight, the pages are exceptionally bright and clean, and the top edge retains bright gilt. There is no spotting and no inscriptions. What a very rare and exciting find for collectors. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D11, Woods A10.

Well, Jane, who is it from? What is it about?

1907. Original pen-and-ink watercolour illustration (370 × 267 mm) presented in a handmade gold leaf frame, with conservation glass and in an attractive wash-line mount. Margins slightly marked, with some ink marks by the artist to top right corner. In excellent condition. The original signed illustration for the edition of Pride and Prejudice published in 1907 as part of the "Series of English Idylls" by J. M. Dent & Co; this illustration appearing in Chapter 7, p. 29. The illustrations Brock created are a full and original revision of his previous illustrations for Macmillan in 1895. C. E. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in the year following the publication of these illustrations. The costume and interior decor depicted in these illustrations is reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry used to collect antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio. The scene depicted shows Jane Bennet in receipt of a letter of invitation from Caroline Bingley.

Superb bold Robert E. Peary signature and inspirational quote in latin

1907. No binding. Very Good. Superb bold signature and inspirational quote in Latin , penned on a 7" x 4" card, in full: "Robt. Peary, U.S.N. June 10, '07 'Inveniam viam aut faciam" ["I shall find my way or make one"]. The phrase has been attributed to Hannibal; when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the Alps by elephant, this was supposedly his response. Light offsetting to margin and some negligible staining, otherwise very good. , During his 1899 expedition to reach the geographic North Pole, Robert Peary reached Fort Conger, only to have several toes snap off at the first joint because of frost bite. Bedridden for weeks while recuperating, Peary wrote on a wall, Inveniam viam aut faciam ("I shall find a way or make one."), attributed to the Roman philosopher Seneca the Elder. Fort Conger is a former settlement, military fortification, and scientific research post in Qikiqtaaluk, Nunavut, Canada. It was established in 1881 as an Arctic exploration camp, notable as the site of the first major northern polar region scientific expedition, part of the US government's contribution to the First International Polar Year. In 1991, some of the structures at Fort Conger were designated as Classified Federal Heritage Buildings. American polar explorer who was the first man to attain the North Pole, arriving by sled on April 6, 1909.

The position of the eagle's head and wings, and what appears to be a shield below its body, suggests that it is a version of the Great Seal of the United States. A unique piece.
