Contemporary binding by Palmer, Howe & Co of Manchester of dark red goatskin over bevelled boards, the front cover with a border composed of a repeated gilt roll and thick blind fillet and a panel of gilt fillets with blue and citron goatskin onlays tooled in gilt, with gilt fleurons in the corners and at the centre a cypher with the letters W and B in dark green and blue goatskin outlined and shaded with gilt fillets and gouges; the lower cover similarly tooled but without the onlays. Smooth spine, the turn-ins and matching inside joints tooled with a gilt dog-tooth and fillets and with blue goatskin onlays tooled with a repeated semi-circle to create a wave pattern, blue watered silk endleaves and doublures. Contained within the original dark purple goatskin drop-over box, padded and lined with white silk, the upper cover tooled with the gilt cypher. (The box a little rubbed and scratched and the underside protected with a panel of purple cloth). The testimonial was presented to the Rev. William Besant to mark his 40 years as vicar of Buglawton and 50 years as minister of the parish of Astbury in Cheshire. It is signed in the name of the two churchwardens, six sidesmen, the schoolmaster and 75 subscribers. Both the manuscript and the binding and box are elaborate and competently executed. The firm of Palmer, Howe & Co of Princess Street, Manchester has proudly applied its name to all three pieces. They are better known as printers and publishers, but there is another of their signed bindings in the John Collins collection now in the British Library.

        Gabrielle D'Estrees

London - Arthur L. Humphreys, 1907. London - Arthur L. Humphreys, 1907 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A biography written by Adrian Desclozeaux about Gabrielle d'Estres, Duchess of Beaufort and Verneuil, Marchioness of Monceaux (1573 April 1599), a French mistress of King Henry IV of France. Gabrielle d'Estres became Henry's mistress in 1591, in the middle of his bitter struggle with the Catholic League. Although he was married to Marguerite de Valois, Henri and Gabrielle were openly affectionate with each other in public. Fiercely loyal, Gabrielle accompanied Henri during his campaigns. Even when heavily pregnant, she insisted on living inside his tent near the battlefield, making sure his clothing was clean and that he ate well after a battle, handling the day to day correspondence while he fought. As she was an intelligent and practical woman, Henri confided his secrets to her and followed her advice. When the two were apart, they wrote each other frequent letters. Includes a bookplate to the front pastedown from the personal library of John Wynford Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids PC (May 1860 March 1938), a British Liberal politician. Condition: In a gilt vellum binding with cloth boards. Externally, excellent condition with just minorshelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean with just the odd spot and some scattered spotting to the first and last pages. Overall Condition: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Plain Tales from the Hills

London - Macmillan and Co., 1907. London - Macmillan and Co., 1907 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of Kipling's first collection of short stories. The title refers, by way of a pun on 'Plane' as the reverse of 'Hills', to the deceptively simple narrative style; and to the fact that many of the stories are set in the Hill Station of Simla - the 'summer capital of the British Raj' during the hot weather. Not all of the stories are, in fact, about life in 'the Hills': Kipling gives sketches of many aspects of life in British India. Some of the titles included are Watches of the Night, The Bronckhurt Divorce Case, and The Story of Muhammad Din. Condition: In a half-calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound, though a little rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Neat ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Pages have some scattered light spotting throughout, with some handling marks. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The Shorter Poems of Robert Bridges

London - Geo. Bell and Sons, 1907. London - Geo. Bell and Sons, 1907 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive collection of Bridges' poetry. A new edition. Robert Seymour Bridges, OM, (23 October 1844 21 April 1930) was a British poet, and poet laureate from 1913 to 1930. As a poet Bridges stands rather apart from the current of modern English verse, but his work has had great influence in a select circle, by its restraint, purity, precision, and delicacy yet strength of expression. It embodies a distinct theory of prosody. Bridge's faith underpinned much of his work. Condition: In a quarter calf binding with cloth-covered boards and gilt decoration to spine. Externally, very smart with slight fading to spine only. Internally, firmly bound, generally bright and clean. Overall: NEAR FINE.

Het verhaal van Tom het Poesje. uit het Engels, The Tale of Tom Kitten

Warne and Co Ltd 1907. Warne and Co Ltd 1907. bound, Original wrappers, 27 lithographs complet. 85pp. first translating in Dutch. Beatrix Potter (1866-1943), was an English children?s book author and illustrator, primarily. She was also a farmer, a conservationist, and a natural explorer fascinated by science and the wonders of the natural world around her, be they flora or fauna. From a very early age, Potter took to the outdoor world like a fish to water, rambling the countryside, woods and waterways near her home whenever she could. She was a lonely child. Her younger brother Bertram was sent away to boarding school, and Potter had few friends. As well, the lion?s share of her upbringing was seen to by various servants, nannies and governesses. Most days, Potter would only see her parents at bedtime, though they spent time together as a family on special occasions. Perhaps it was this loneliness and isolation that was the catalyst for Potter?s imagination and devotion to nature. Necessity is the mother of invention, and Potter?s few social interactions resulted in her creating an imaginary world of friends inside herself, for amusement and to keep herself company. Her most iconic character, Peter Rabbit (more famous than his siblings Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail) was named for a real-life beloved pet that Potter used to bring along for adventures on a leash. This sense of isolation and longing to belong may also contribute to the enormous popularity with children of Potter's stories - the wonder, delight and magic in the tales are accompanied by a real understanding of the wistfulness and loneliness that color the experience of being little.

        Chemotherapeutische Trypanosomen-Studien

, 1907 1907. First Account of Microbial Drug Resistance Ehrlich, Paul (1854-1915). Chemotherapeutische Trypanosomen-Studien. Offprint from Berliner klinischen Wochenschrift, no. 9-12 (1907). 42pp. 222 x 145 mm. Original printed wrappers, slightly toned and chipped, small split in lower spine. Very good copy. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Ehrlich on the front wrapper: ?H. Prof. Dr. Kamell(?) in [. . .] hochachtung P. Ehrlich.? Stamp of the Johns Hopkins Medical School Library. First Edition, Offprint Issue. The first account of induced microbial drug resistance, a now widespread phenomenon that has become a major concern for physicians and the pharmaceutical industry. Ehrlich encountered induced drug resistance in microbes while researching arsenical preparations as cures for sleeping sickness and other trypanosome-caused illnesses. His paper, delivered as a lecture on Feb. 13, 1907, ?explained how the widely varying stains of trypanosomes, which at first reacted with great sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents, gradually became drug resistant and how this property was passed on to their offspring for many generations? (Bäumler, Paul Ehrlich, p. 128). Ehrlich continued to investigate drug-resistant trypanosomes for several years, recognizing that resistance provided an important tool for studying mechanisms of immune response. This copy bears a presentation inscription in Ehrlich?s bold hand; we have not been able to identify the recipient. Franklin and Snow, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Antimicrobial Drug Action, p. 135.
