An electrical method of counting the number of [alpha]-particles from radioactive substances.London: Harrison & Sons for The Royal Society, 1908.

First edition, the invention of the Geiger counter. This device made possible the famous alpha-particle scattering experiment carried out by Geiger and Marsden which led Rutherford to the discovery of the atomic nucleus.

"In 1907 Rutherford was translated to the chair of physics in the University of Manchester. Here he found a young graduate of Erlangen, Hans Geiger, with whom he devised [in the present paper] an electrical method of counting the alpha-particles directly, the Geiger counter as it has since been generally called... This counting of atoms one by one was a great achievement" (Whittaker, History of Theories of Aether and Electricity, Vol. I, p. 7).

The detector devised by Geiger consisted of a wire in a low-pressure chamber with a voltage applied across the wire and the outside of the tube. The voltage is high enough that a current can almost, but not quite, flow through the gas. When an ionizing particle came into contact with the wire, it disturbs the system enough to complete the circuit, and the resulting completion can be detected by an audible click or by a pointer, depending on the type of counter.

Once it was possible to reliably detect, and therefore count, alpha particles, Rutherford devised an experiment to determine the charge on an alpha particle. In 'The charge and nature of the [alpha]-particle' (pp. 162-73 in the present issue), Rutherford and Geiger report the results of that experiment, namely that the charge on an alpha-particle is twice the electronic charge.

Hans Geiger (1882-1945) studied physics at the University of Munich and served in the German military before pursuing graduate studies at Erlangen, earning his PhD in 1906 with a thesis on electrical releases through gases. He then moved to England to become a laboratory assistant in Rutherford's laboratory at the University of Manchester. In 1909 he conducted the famous 'gold foil experiment' with Ernest Marsden, and in 1911 he and John Nuttall discovered the 'Geiger-Nuttall law' relating the rate of radioactive decay to the energy of the emitted alpha-particles. In 1914, Geiger returned to Germany, initially to take charge of radiation research at the National Institute for Science and Technology. After World War I, during which he served as an artillery officer, Geiger returned to research, finding a position at the University of Kiel where he collaborated with one of his doctoral students, Walther Muller, on improving his original Geiger counter device, making it more efficient, responsive, durable and portable. Unlike the earlier version, which could detect only alpha particles, the new improved Geiger-Muller counter could detect many different kinds of ionizing radiation. He used the new device to confirm the existence of light quanta in 1925, and later to discover cosmic ray showers, which would claim his scientific attention for the remainder of is career. Geiger was a member of the so-called Uranium Club, a clandestine German effort to develop and produce atomic weapons after the discovery of atomic fission in 1939. The program splintered in 1942, with its scientists moving to other areas of research deemed more urgent, after it was determined (incorrectly) that nuclear fission would not play a major role in ending the war.. Four Autographed Notes and Letters

Vienna, 1907. unbound. Small archive encompassing three letters to a former student from the United States named Elsie Russell, who had studied piano under Leschetizky in the mid-1890s and who went on to have a successful career in her own right. All signed in full. Included is a letter of recommendation, 8vo, 1 page, 7.5 x 5 inches, Wien, March 27, 1897, written in German, stating that, "Miss Elsie Russell, who studied piano with him...showed excellent understanding and he believes that as a performer and teacher she will go on to great success ('vielon erfolg')." The second item in this collection is an autographed note signed on a colorful picture postcard of "Villa Leschetizky," 3.5 x 5.5 inches, Feldgasse, Bad Ischl, Austria, September 12, 1903, in German, sending thanks to his former student for her friendly communication ("Lebenzeichen") and returning his best wishes. The third item is an autographed note signed on a Correspondence card with an engraving of his town house, 3.5 x 5.5 inches, Vienna, January 7, 1907, in German, thanking [the now married] Mrs. Elsie Russell Tarecki for her kindness and sending best wishes for the New Year ("Neujahr's Grussen"). The fourth item is an important autographed letter signed by Eugenie Leschetizky -- a former pupil who became the professor's fourth wife in 1894 and who is said to have controlled his affairs with an iron fist, 8vo, 4 pages, written front and back on a single, folded piece of paper, 6.75 x 8.5 inches, Vienna, April 7, no year, circa 1899, in English, in small part: "I realize completely that you would like very much to come to Europe again...but having talked to Professor, he thinks you ought not do it just now - because you have such a fine start and an absence of a few months may spoil it a great deal...Professor ceases teaching this year much earlier than before because he has not taken any rest at Easter...So you see, you won't not [sic] get even the chance of a few lessons with Professor...You have gone through such good preparatory studies...that Professor thinks it quite useless for you to begin them again. You asked Professor's advice in the question of you coming to Vienna and that is the reason why I give it to you so frankly...instead of encouragement. Professor has not been very well this winter, his liver has not been in a good state again...his lessons here have been three a day...the classes only once in a fortnight." Very good condition. Acclaimed Polish pianist, professor, and composer who was one of the founders of The St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music in 1862. Among his most gifted students were Igance Paderewski, Artur Schnabel, Alexander Brailowsky, and Anna Yesipova.

London: John Murray, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight loss of color to the rear cover. Near Fine, lacking the dustwrapper. A scarce book, this copy with a fine provenance. Decorated brown cloth. The true First Edition of Bramah's scarce dystopian novel, published afterwards as THE SECRET OF THE LEAGUE, and a strong influence on the creation of NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR by George Orwell who cited Bramah's novel as an accurate prediction of the rise of Fascism. The book also clearly influenced Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED with its character of George Salt who secretly organizes against creeping socialism in England. The plot involves the overthrow of a democratically-elected British Labour Party Government through a carefully prepared plot by members of the upper classes, depicting this overthrow as a positive and desirable outcome. This copy with the bookplate of noted collector Paul Lemperly on the front pastedown. In addition, tipped to the front endpaper is a brief history of the book's publication written and initialed by Lemperly. Also with collector Robert Elwell's bookplate designed by Reynolds Stone on the verso of the front endpaper. Bramah might be best known as the creator of the characters Kai Lung and Max Carrados. The Kai Lung stories were strong contemporary rivals of A. Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, the two often appearing side by side in the Strand magazine.

My health is fine, except for a touch of anemia...." She signs, "Unica." Bellmer, her partner, signs, "et Hans Bellmer."

The Tragedy of Russia in Pacific Asia

New York - The Outing Publishing Company, 1907 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of the Russo-Japanese war, which acted as the trigger for the Russian Revolution in 1917. Illustrated throughout with numerous maps and photographs by the author. The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 5 September 1905) was the first great war of the 20th century. It grew out of rival imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and Japanese Empire over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden; and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. The resulting campaigns, in which the Japanese military attained victory over the Russian forces arrayed against them, were unexpected by world observers. Over time, the consequences of these battles would transform the balance of power in East Asia, resulting in a reassessment of Japan's recent entry onto the world stage. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In cloth bindings with original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally smart, with just some light shelfwear. Dustwrappers have some loss and closed tears, with a few handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED with GOOD ONLY dustwrappers..

OK, fine. So we get the manuscript around 1984

c1961. Sheet size: 172 × 190 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. A cigar-smoking publisher watches as an elder lady signs a publishing contract. The caption has been erased. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
