Three Special Numbers of The Shipbuilder; Mauretania, Olympic and Titanic, and Aquitania

Newcastle-on-Tyne and London: The Shipbuilder,, 1907-1914. 3 volumes octavo bound as one (243 × 180 mm) Near contemporary black sand-grained cloth by Otto Hesse, Bethlehem Book Bindery, title gilt to the spine. Mauretania (November,1907); 164pp., coloured frontispiece 3 other similar plates, 165 photographs and diagrams to the text, many full-page, and 5 folding plans: Olympic and Titanic (June, 1911); 130 pp., coloured frontispiece, additional portrait frontispiece of Bruce Ismay, 7 folding plates and plans, 146 photographs, diagrams, sketches to the text, many full-page, 2 folding advertisements: Aquitania (June, 1914) :154pp., Mounted coloured frontispiece, ship portrait by C.E. Turner, 4 coloured plates, 5 folding plans, numerous illustrations to the text, the majority full-page. A little rubbed, some light browning and soiling to the endpapers, a very good copy. The Shipbuilder, a Quarterly Magazine devoted to Shipbuilding, Marine Engineering and Allied Industries", was first published in 1904 as the "Mid-Tyne Link", and continued with minor variations of title, up to 1964, encompassing 682 issues, establishing itself as the journal of record for the industry. Original copies of perhaps the three most important numbers ever produced, covering Cunard's first Mauretania of 1907, sister ship to the Lusitania; Aquitania, 'The Ship Beautiful', in her later years honoured as the 'Grand Old Lady'; and White Star Line's successful Olympic and her ill-fated twin sister Titanic, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1912 – less than a year after the Midsummer 1911 issue of this special number. It was probably a combination of White Star Line puffery, and The Shipbuider's highly detailed technical articles, based in part on the Line's puffery - "The watertight subdivision of the Olympic and Titanic is very complete" (p.25 ) - that gave birth to the myth of the Titanic's unsinkability. Interesting to note also that "it does not fall within the province of this work to describe in detail the Marconi apparatus". All early numbers of this periodical are uncommon, those featuring the great liners are particularly sought after, with the Titanic "special" being the prize. A highly attractive group.

        Monson, Maine

Seth Steward, 1907. AN OIL PAINTING OF MONSON, MAINE Oil on canvas Canvas size: 20 1/8" x 40 1/8" Frame size: 26 3/8" x 46 1/4" Signed and dated l.l: S.W. Steward '07 Monson was incorporated as a town by an act of State Legislature on February 8, 1822, just two years after Maine achieved statehood. The town's success was founded upon the discovery of slate in the surrounding land which brought many settlers eager to work in the numerous quarries that were established. In this charming view of Monson, the town can be seen resting upon the banks of Lake Hebron. The most prominent buildings are the churches: the Baptist Church, the Congregational Church, the Swedish Lutheran Church and the Swedish Methodist Church. Many Swedish immigrants settled in Monson to work at the slate quarries, and the latter of the churches clearly were established by them. . Book.

[THREE ALBUMS OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF SCENES IN MAINE, AND OF LIFE IN FRANCE AND ENGLAND IN THE YEAR BEFORE WORLD WAR I, TAKEN BY MIT PROFESSOR RALPH RESTIEAUX LAWRENCE]

[Maine and various places in Europe. 1907, 1913, 1920].. A total of 248 original photographic prints. Oblong octavo albums. Original black morocco, spine gilt, titles as transcribed below. Albums with some shelf wear; European album slightly cocked, lower portion of front joint splitting. The photographs are clean and in excellent condition. An outstanding collection of photographic images of scenes in Maine, coastal France, and the Channel Islands. The photographs were taken by an MIT Professor who apparently vacationed in Maine on a regular basis, and who also visited England and France in the year before the outbreak of World War I. The albums of Maine images ably show the natural beauty of far western Maine, while the album of scenes in France and England captures life in small villages and towns in Normandy, Brittany, and the Channel Islands before the peace of the region was shattered by the Great War. Two of the albums feature silver gelatin prints that have been printed directly onto the album sheets, with accompanying handwritten captions. The third album consists of photographic prints affixed to sheets of the album. Though without ownership signatures, we attribute these albums to Ralph Restieaux Lawrence, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. These albums came with other photographic albums made by Lawrence on trips to the American West and Canada, featuring photographs done in a similar style, captioned and bound as these albums. Ralph Restieaux Lawrence (b. 1873) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from MIT in 1895. He taught electrical engineering at MIT from 1896 to 1941, and apparently enjoyed photography and traveling, as the present albums would indicate. The three albums are: [ALBUM ENTITLED Heald Pond Maine 1907]. Original oblong octavo album. [39] original photographic prints, most measuring approximately 3 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches, each print affixed to a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 8 x 10 inches. This album contains a series of lovely photographs of the area around Heald Pond, in west- central Maine, not far from the Canadian border. Heald Pond is known for its natural beauty - ably captured in these photographs - and for its hiking trails. The photographs in this album are uncaptioned, but show a number of images of the large pond and surrounding area, as well as cabins and campsites. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Europe 1913]. Original oblong octavo album. [162] original silver gelatin prints, measuring approximately 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 6 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. The pictures show scenes in France and England, mostly in the regions of Brittany and Normandy, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, and Sark, and the towns of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Many of the photographs show life in villages or larger towns, such as Caen in Normandy. There are a number of photographs of scenes in and around the Brittany village of Concarneau, including market scenes, fetes, and scenes along the port, but other villages, such as Pont-Aven and Vitre are included as well. Many of the photographs in the British islands show castles, ruins, towns, and coastal scenes. In all, a magnificent series of photographs of this region on the verge of World War I. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Attean Maine 1920]. Original oblong octavo album. [47] original silver gelatin prints, measuring on average 3 x 5, (one of them a panoramic photo measuring 3 x 13 1/2inches on a folded sheet) each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 7 x 9 1/2 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. Attean Lake is a resort area located in west-central Maine, and this album of attractive silver gelatin prints shows scenes from a vacation taken there by Lawrence in 1920. The panoramic photograph is a lovely view of Attean Lake from a high perspective on nearby Mount Sally. There are several other pictures from Mount Sally, as well as images of camps, vistas from lake level, nearby woods, other ponds, etc.

Chic Parisien. Journal Special Pour Modeles de Paris et Vienne. Atelier Bachwitz. Paris Vienna. Max Grab Fashion Co. Sole Agent for U.S.A. and Canada. New York Paraissant le 1er de chaque mois. IXieme Annee. American Edition of "Chic Parisien"

Max Grab Fashion Co. Josef Eberle, printer, New York 1907 - Elephantine Folio. 43 by 32 cm. [2 pp. illustrated ads], 8 pp., followed by 11 color plates, two of which are two paged. Excepting the two double paged plates, the plates also have b/w insets of rear views of the gowns being showcased, and on the versos of five of the plates are b/w fashion details and variants. (The other plates are blank on the versos.) One of the plates is an extra plate, not printed with this issue of the Chic Parisien. The American edition of the magazine was issued monthly, with two special supplements per year, issued in March and September. The issue here is one such supplement, issued in September (undated, but the text refers to the 1907 to 1908 season). Scarce, possibly because Max Grab was a retailer and so this was in a sense a cross between a magazine and a trade catalogue. The gowns, furs, and big, bold feathered hats are elegant, luxuriant and spectacular. The clothes were intended for the wealthy ladies to wear to balls, casinos, sporting events, luncheons, shopping and other outings, and the designs were entirely directed towards beauty. There was as yet no hint of rebellion, edginess, or slumming in the creations. Yet while dressy, many of the designs have simple, flattering lines, and many of the designs looked compatible with activity -- these are not uncomfortable, constraining garments to all appearances. One sees in the models, also, that a slender figure was gaining favor; no longer was the plumpness of the late 19th c;entury being idealized. Light wear. Two tape repairs at spine tips.         Silver gelatin print of the crew of Australia Station survey vessel HMS Penguin

Sydney: circa May, 1907. Silver gelatine photograph, 145 x 195 mm. (image size), within closed contemporary card mount with pen manuscript note to rear "from Charles Doylend, H.M.S. Penguin Australia", and pencil annotation in a second hand "Mrs Doylend… 15/5/07"; very good condition. Rare original photograph of the crew and lower-ranking officers of HMS Penguin taken circa 1907. This appears to be the only recorded photograph of the crew, apparently taken shortly after they had completed their work surveying the Great Barrier Reef. As a result, this is a significant record of an important surveying vessel, and it is also interesting to note that several men of Pacific Islander descent are present as full able seamen. HMS Penguin was a barque-rigged sloop launched from Glasgow in 1876. In January 1890 conversion work was completed preparatory for the vessel being sent to Pacific and Australian waters. Over the following seventeen years (or six full commissions) the Penguin surveyed the Pacific cable route and broke existing records for deep soundings off Tonga and the Kermadec archipelago. Notably, through 1905-1906 she undertook hazardous survey work on the Great Barrier Reef, correcting past errors and continuing the trigonometric survey of the Queensland coast. The Penguin was an ideal vessel for this hydrographic survey work of the Australian coastline: too slow for a modern fighting vessel, her reliability, seaworthiness and shallow draught made her perfect for the job (see an excellent note at http://www.navy.gov.au/HMAS_Penguin_%28I%29). A contemporary pencil note to the mount of this image suggests the photograph was taken on 15 May 1907. This would certainly accord with the known details of the Penguin, which had completed its Great Barrier Reef survey work late in 1906. The vessel arrived in Sydney in January 1907 and was finally paid off on 31 March of that year, preparatory to becoming a depot ship on Sydney Harbour. Indeed, the relaxed and informal posing of the crew here tends to suggest that the putative date of May 1907 is quite likely, as the image has the feel of a graduating class. Significantly, no other image of the crew is known to exist, although there is an almost contemporary image of the officers held in the Australian War Memorial, dated 1909 (http://cas.awm.gov.au/photograph/301157).

        Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

1907. The American Edition De Luxe in the Original Glassine and Box[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. CARROLL, Lewis. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. New York: Doubleday Page & Co. [n.d., 1907]. First American De Luxe Edition. Limited to 550 numbered copies (this copy being # 114) signed in red ink by the publisher. Large quarto (11 3/16 x 9 inches; 285 x 230 mm.). xii, 161, [1]. Thirteen tipped-in full-page color plates mounted on heavy brown paper, with lettered tissue-guards. Fourteen black and white drawings.Publishers quarter dark green cloth over light green boards. Front cover decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt with a color image of 'Alice' (from the frontispiece) pasted-on. Pictorial endpapers printed in green. Top edge gilt, others uncut. A very fine copy in the original decorative 'spiders-web' glassine, in the original green cardboard box, decoratively lettered in gold. This is by far the finest copy of the American Edition De Luxe that we have ever seen."Rackham's next undertaking after Peter Pan was the most controversial of his whole career. This was nothing less than a fresh illustration of Alice in Wonderland, a work so completely identified with the drawings by John Tenniel that it seemed to many critics almost blasphemous for anyone to attempt to prepare alternatives. As soon as it became clear, however, that a spate of new illustrated editions was being planned to follow the expiry of the original copyright (in fact, at least seven appeared in England in the first possible year, 1907), it was surely not to be regretted that an artist of Rackham's quality had taken up the challenge. Even The Times, in the course of an unfavourable review, recognized that Rackham 'feels his privilege and his responsibilities', but this critic, obsessed by Tenniel, found Rackham's humour 'forced and derivative' and discovered 'few signs of true imaginative instinct' in his work. A stranger wrote at once to sympathize: 'I felt I must express my indignation at the injustice of the "Times" criticism. However, I am certain that Time is on your side, and that nothing but prejudice prevents your superiority being recognised now. Your delightful Alice is alive and makes by contrast Tenniel's Alice look a stiff wooden puppet. This went much further than Rackham would have done, for he had no wish to set himself up against Tenniel. He would have been well content with the verdict of the Daily Telegraph, that it would be fortunate for Lewis Carroll's memory if his masterpiece encountered 'no less inspired interpreters than Mr Arthur Rackham'..." (Derek Hudson, Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work. pp 70 and 72.)"The Alice... is not the heroine of Sir John Tenniel's imagination; she is older and more sophisticated; but at the same time she has a tender, flickering light of imagination in her eyes, which lifts her out of the domain of the merely pretty and childish... Mr. Rackham's inexhaustible imagination, working over and embroidering the ground-work of Tenniel's types, has added a really wonderful wealth of uncanny, dreamlike mystery to the story...[and] extraordinary feeling into the drawing of the hands" (Daily Telegraph).Latimore & Haskell, p. 29. Riall, p.77.

        4 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

Verschiedene Orte, 1907.. Verschiedene Formate. George Sand [...]" (14. VIII. 1907).

        The Novels

London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York, , 1907-09. [Pride & Prejudice; Sense and Sensibility; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey; Persuasion. Each novel] With twenty-four coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. 6 volumes, octavo. Original gilt decorative cloth, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Each volume with 24 colour plates by C. E. Brock. Occasional minor spotting to pages, endpapers tanned, contents a little toned, bindings with some mild toning to spines, a few volumes with inner front hinge cracked, a very good set. First Brock editions of the complete novels of Jane Austen. C. E. Brock (1870-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen within Macmillan's 1895-7 series (with introductions by Austin Dobson), Brock illustrating only Pride and Prejudice, and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series was illustrated in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and certainly his vision of Austen's world, its gentle graces and sharp ironies, is best expressed, as here, in colour. Furthermore, the colourful costumes and interior decor depicted in these illustrations are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 separate pages 4to, on lined "Cottage Point, Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania" stationery, Christmas Day 1907

      - A poetic tribute to friendship, with information on his writings. "To Alan. I have never had a friend. I have always been a little afraid of you. because I liked you and was afraid you would soon see through me, and regarding me as an opaque, substanceless [sic] shadow, pass me by. I never thought of being different from my real self. I said, 'If he is ever to like me at all, it must be with bad and all!'" Grey notes that he never cared what anyone thought of him, but that he "did care what you thought." He refers to his wife, Dolly (Lina Roth): "She is a woman and thinks me a hero, and you are a man and know that I am not." He further elaborates on his meeting Alan and becoming his friend in a very romanticized manner: "Such glimpses as I have had myself in some gray sleepless morning hour. twilight lonesome. have bewildered and terrified me. I have seen a calm, deep, star-studded pool and I have seen a maelstrom. So here's to the day I blindly broke into your office, broke in when the world was dark. the day I broke in, to find a friend." And further, "What you said. is dearer to me than to see this lion-story with Harper's imprint [referring most likely to The "Last of the Plainsmen" which was not published by Harper's]." He talks of his "struggle against darkness" made light because "hope and faith are light." The letter concludes with details of his writing. "I have written seven chapters of The Last of the Plainsmen [published 1908] since I saw you. I don't know how good it is, but I'll gamble what the desert looks and feels like. the Grand Canyon. what Buffalo Jones was. simply telling the thing as reminiscence. But the story. has taken on a new life. I seem to have a different feeling for it. I've got the desert, and the forest. the wind. the sun, all right here with me." Signed, "Well, Banzai! Old Man - Yours Zane.". "The Last of the Plainsmen," was published in 1908 by Outing.

Scrappy temperance movement leader Carrie Nation letter, all in her hand

Autograph letter signed "Carry A. Nation", March 17, 1907, Boston, Massachusetts, one page, 6.5" x 8.5" on plain paper. In full: "Boston Mass march 17, 1907 Dear Sir, I leave Boston tonight for Washington. As soon as you get this call at 217 D St NW. I will be there only a day or so and oblig'd (signed) Carry A Nation". The spelling of her first name is ambiguous and both Carrie and Carry are considered correct. Official records say Carrie, which Nation used most of her life; the name Carry was used by her father in the family Bible. Upon beginning her campaign against liquor in the early 20th century, she adopted the name Carry A. Nation mainly for its value as a slogan, and had it registered as a trademark in the state of Kansas.

Chic Parisien. Journal Special Pour Modeles de Paris et Vienne. Atelier Bachwitz. Paris Vienna. Max Grab Fashion Co. Sole Agent for U.S.A. and Canada. New York Paraissant le 1er de chaque mois. IXieme Annee. American Edition of "Chic Parisien

New York: Max Grab Fashion Co. Josef Eberle, printer, 1907. Wraps. Very Good. Elephantine Folio.
