1907 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG TOPEKA KANSAS WOMAN WITH CHARM, PERSONALITY AND A KEEN OBSERVER

TOPEKA KANSAS KS 1907 - On offer is a terrific, original 1907 handwritten diary and journal of Susie C. Staples of Topeka, Kansas. This book, hand dated by the author, has over 300 entries for the year. The diary is a wonderful bit of western Americana as it provides a detailed inner look at this mature young [28 y/o at writing] woman's life is like in early 20th century Kansas and is also a super travel diary of an extended mid-western road trip. Susie worked for the Santa Fe Railway in Topeka, Kansas apparently as a senior clerk working on foreign account records, passenger records, training other clerks, etc., but she doesn't go into great detail. She is an ideal diarist starting with mention of that day's weather and a synopsis of her day and evening, mentioning names of calls and visitors and local historians and collectors will find a wealth of local history and genealogy. For transportation she still used a horse & buggy but also used the electric car and many trains to get around. At one time there is an entry that their horse got scared by an auto & fell & hurt his knees quite badly - the vet was called a day or so later and said not to use him for 10 days. They played a lot of Flinch after dinner, sewed, shopped, went to parties, Church, visited relatives constantly, she sometimes quotes what was served for dinner, it seems someone in her family was always taking a train somewhere, she mentions illness, redecorating of their home, attending parades and other amusements, and much, much more. Here are some snippets: Wed. Jan 2 - .Terrible wreck on Railroad only 43 miles west of Topeka this A.M. at 5:00. 30 persons killed. One a colored porter was killed, lived just back of us. Thurs. Jan 31st. Ground one glaze of ice everything covered. Started to drive down - so slippery horse could not stand up had to get out & walk down so was 20 min. late. Told Miss Fauble the reason. Sun. Feb 3rd. Coldest day so far this winter.Gas pressure so low had to all live in kitchen not very warm there. Cousin Ivy started a wood fire up in her room and we visited up there. She came with me to depot. I left Kansas City at 4:30 arrived home between 6 & 7. Thurs. Mar. 14th. A lovely day first time the sun has shown for over a week. Mattie & I asked to get off to go to depot to see Cousin Agnes. We saw Cousin Agnes & her three children Lewis, Mac & Elinor & Cousin Gertrude it was quite a satisfaction to even see them & we had a nice little visit. Just think they go from Penn. to Cal. take all their meals on the train, travel in a drawing room section. C. Gertrude is not much larger than Minnie, not any better looking she is so wrinkled & freckled & red hair but very pleasant.Mama, Aunty & C. Anna went to a tacky party at Mrs. Shorts to sew carpet rags.Clarence went to "Alice in Wonderland" home talent play. Sun. Apr. 21. .saw Marvin at church this a.m. with his girl, the preachers daughter. We had a lovely little trip to KC. Mr. Freeman knew the conductor so we got to go out on the observation car.We took trolley ride out to "Electric Park" as we had to wait till 9:00 train out. Met Mr. F at the depot. Had quite a Sunday lesson on the train. One of the girls from the office was on the train, she bo't a pack of cards & asked Marvin & I to play cards with her. Oh how it made my heart ache for her & what a lesson it taught me on firmness of character. Tues. July 23rd. Hot July day. Word was rec'd in Topeka that two vessels on the Pacific Coast had collided & lots of passengers were drowned. Cora & Sadie Shull were on one of the vessels & are afraid they are among the missing - everyone is talking about it. (Later entry confirms they died). Tues. Oct. 1st - .Mattie & I got off (work) to go to Kansas City, a whole crowd from the office went. Left Topeka at 5:30. Had a jolly time going down. At Lawrence Mattie & I got a seat together "skinned" a fellow out of it. Met Geo. Rogers right inside the depot.Geo. took Mattie & I to the Telephone Office where he works, he showed u [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh, and other pageants for a baby girl.

John Lane The Bodley Head, London 1907 - The 12 coloured wood engraving plates make this a truly desirable and attractive volume. Robertson was part of the talented group of artists and illustrators who flourished in London in the 1890's and he claimed to have been influenced by Crane and the Glasgow school [Houfe] - something that is clearly evident in the illustrations in this work. The work is essentially a poem, written as a play for a young one year old child. Note - Robertson is perhaps best known for his illustration that was used for the frontispiece for the first edition of Graham's Wind in the Willows. Blue / purple cloth covered boards with illustration and titling in black and yellow to both boards and backstrip. 265x210mm. 152pp plus 8pp publisher's catalogue at rear. Fading to boards and backstrip. Corners, top/tail backstrip bumped. Small edge section of ffep and first prelim is creased with a small nib of paper loss. Wonderful clean contents with tight binding. Offsetting to the front pastedown and first free endpaper from a no-longer-present clipping; scattered foxing, ranging from light to moderate, to the half title and title page. Lacking the exceptionally rare dust jacket. This copy bearing the bookplate of Allan Wade, an actor, director and W.B. Yeats scholar. Laid in is a promotional postcard announcing the first production of this play at the Abbey Theatre on Saturday, January 26, 1907, addressed to Wade at the Royal Court Theatre in London. This title is scarce in its own right; if there were another three copies of the postcard surviving in the world it would be a surprise. A unique and extremely rare pairing.

      - Urging him not to retire, and discussing the options. '[Sir Anthony Hope] Hawkins has no more sense of the tenue of public life than - shall we say [Sir Frank] Swettenham? and it would be much safer for us if we could retain you; but if he is willing, and you must retire, I do not see how we can improve on him. I have no mortal objection - quite the contrary.'Together with a letter to the same Sir Henry from Anthony Hope Hawkins, 1 page small 4to, 41 Bedford Square, 16 January 1907, reluctantly accepting the chairmanship.

        Before Adam.

New York. The Macmillan Company 1907. - First Edition. This copy inscribed boldly in ink by Jack London to his Sister, Ida London Byrne and his Brother-In-Law Jack on the Front free endsheet In a strong, broad hand requiring the majority of the Front Free Endsheet, London writes :"Dear Ida & Jack- With love and lots off (sic) it from your brother, Jack London. Oakland, Calif. April 17,1907 " A most ironic spelling error ( "off for "of " )by one of history's great writers !Accompanying this volume is a postcard loosely laid-in. The front of the postcard is a photograph of Jack and Charmian London outside their home ( Wake Robin Lodge) in Glen Ellen.Portions of the rear of the card present old scrapbook adhesive remnants which obscure portions of the postmark and stamp as well as the address and message. Postmarked Oakland, January 1913 ( day obscured ) it is addressed to Mrs. Alice shade in San Francisco. The inked message begins "Dear Friend" with the remaining text indecipherable due to adhesive remnant. It is signed "Yours, Ida Byrne ( her married name ). Illustrated with 8 colour plates, map and additional monochrome drawings ex text by Charles Livingston Bull. 8vo. Bound in pictorial decorated brown buckram Ida London ( 1870-1914) was the younger daughter of John London, Jack's step-father.From the turbulence of their early family life through Jack' meteoric rise to fame and ultimate early death, Jack and Ida enjoyed a close and loving relationship, with Jack assuming an almost paternal role in the raising of IDA's daughter, whom she had named after Jack's wife, Charmian. She and her family often lived at her Brother's ranch in Glen Ellen where her husband, Jack Byrne, was employed by London as Personal Assistant and private secretary. In the last years of her life, Ira suffered from ill-health and was often confined to an Oakland sanitarium. She eventually died on the operating table in June of 1914. IDA's husband, Jack Byrne continued in his Brother-In-Law employee until London's death in 1916. Material inscribed to Jack London's immediate family is exceedingly rare and appears for public sale very infrequently. Very slight lean. Minimal rubbing to covers and spine. Spine titles a bit faded. Corners gently bumped. Scattered mild foxing to prelims (moderately so to inscription). One plate mis-paginated. Several page fore-edges trimmed short (not affecting text). A Very Good, well preserved, crisp copy of a deeply personal relic of the London family. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter, signed, to Joseph L. Killgore, Commander New York Association Union of Ex-Prisoners of War

Brooklyn, NY, may 5th, 1907. 8vo. 2 pp., on two sheets of letterhead of The National First Aid Association. Fine, in blue cloth folder . At the end of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln placed Clara Barton, the "Angel of the Battlefield", in charge of the search for the missing men of the Union Army. In the summer of 1865, she, along with a detachment of workers, soldiers, and a former prisoner named Dorence Atwater who had smuggled out a list of all the union soldiers who had lost their lives at Andersonville prison, came to the Andersonville cemetery to identify and mark the graves of the Union dead. Thanks to Atwater's list and the efforts of Clara Barton, over 12,000 soliders who died at Andersonville were identified and their graves were marked. Upon being invited to participate in a memorial service for the dead over 40 years later, Barton responds with a ringing statement of hope: "Soldiers, it is well you meet to memorialize such an occasion, and immortalize such a day; for immortal it will be in one form or another, while history lasts. The world has no history so enduring as the history of its martyrs. They who write their names in blood, for the cause of righteousness, and humanity, like the Great Martyr of all, sign a deathless record. A record that neither perishes, nor fades with time, but like His holds a beacon Iight for all coming generations. This, soldiers is your mission, the Holy cause which calls you together, which inspires your thought, and your action; and in this spirit I am with you, even unto that great day when wars shall cease, humanity fill its depleted ranks, - men calmly reasoning together shall search the right and the truth, and these shall make them free"
