AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND: OR HOW A PLANE FOLK DISCOVERED THE THIRD DIMENSION. TO WHICH IS ADDED AN OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF UNAEA

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., Limd.,. 1907. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-181 [182: blank] [183: ads] [184: blank], figures in text,. original maroon cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold.. A fine copy. This book is rarely found in the first issue binding.. Formerly science fiction author / editor / publisher Donald A.. Wollheim's copy with his name rubber stamped on rear endpaper.. (#75274). First edition, first binding with "Sonnenschein" printed at base of spine panel. C. H. Hinton (1853-1907) was concerned with finding ways of expanding the mind beyond the confines it had been taught to accept as final. His interest in the fourth dimension was the outcome of this search. He published his first essay on the topic, "What is the Fourth Dimension?," in 1880. In the famous analogy, pioneered by Edwin A. Abbott in FLATLAND (1884), and by Hinton himself in "A Plane World" (1886), a being of two dimensions would not be able to perceive a three dimensional object, such as a cube, and would perceive it in two dimensions only, as a square. In the same way, a man is not able to perceive any four dimensional objects, and if any are encountered, he explains them in terms of the familiar three dimensions. Hinton's "very strange story [AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND] describes a two-dimensional world rather more complicated than Abbott's, and features a startling plot in which the inhabitants of a two- dimensional planet avoid collision with another by diverting their 'world' in[to] the third dimension, taking advantage of the fact that -- like the human hero of 'An Unfinished Communication' -- their souls have access to more dimensions than their bodies." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 137. "At the time of his death, Hinton's last book, AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND ... was in press. We can fittingly regard this mature and mellow novel as Hinton's last testament. Any preconceptions of Hinton as some sort of narrow-minded crank are dispelled by the gentle self-irony of the book, which features two characters modeled on Hinton himself." - Rudy Rucker, "Life in the Fourth Dimension: C. H. Hinton and His Scientific Romances," Foundation 18 (January 1980), 12-18. Hinton's work was destined to be the inspiration for other writers whose works would eclipse his own. His scientific romances provided ideas that may have influenced the early work of H. G. Wells, and his speculations on multidimensionality inspired the better known speculations of P. D. Ouspensky. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-98. Bleiler, Science- Fiction: The Early Years 1100. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), pp. 337 and 565. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy. p.113. Locke, Voyages in Space 108. Bleiler (1978), p. 100. Reginald 07230.

London: John Murray, 1907.. Gilt decorated cloth. Cloth rather soiled and worn, boards a bit bowed, internally very good. First edition of the author's first book.         The Novels: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey

J M Dent & Co, E P Dutton & Co, London and New York 1907 - A very good complete 6 volume set of Jane Austen's works illustrated by Charles E Brock, issued as part of Dent's Series of English Idylls. Each volume has 24 colour illustrations by Brock (including frontispiece and decorative title page). Comprising: Persuasion, 1909, 216 pp; Pride and Prejudice, 1907, 336pp; Mansfield Park, 1908, 396pp; Sense and Sensibility, 1908, 308pp; Emma, 1909, 395pp; Northanger Abbey, 1907, 206pp. Dent published an earlier edition with illustrations by H M and C E Brock in 1898 - this later set has a much expanded collection of plates by C E Brock. In the original half leather binding with marbled boards and top page edges with gilt. The bindings have been expertly repaired to provide new leather spines with raised bands, gilt compartments, author name in gilt and gilt title labels. The original marbled endpapers have been retained and match the boards. All the bindings are therefore sound and tight and in very good condition. They have some wear to the original leather corners. The contents are all very clean with bright clean plates and only the very occasional light mark or spot. The paper has light brown toning to the outer page edges. Pride and Prejudice has a minute repaired paper tear to the bottom margin of the plate facing p96 and Mansfield Park has similar to the top gutter of the plate facing p23. A few pages (mainly Emma - 23, 25 and 373) have had the top page corner turned over at some point. Northanger Abbey has a small ink inscription to a preliminary '18 Chapel Cry'. A very handsome set.         The Spirit of the People

Alston Rivers, Limited, 1907 - Just a little wear at extremities and end-papers slightly browned, but a nice copy Not in Harvey This is a fascinating anomaly. After a falling out between Ford and Alston Rivers, Duckworth took over and reprinted the book in 1915. Harvey says that he had not seen a Duckworth reprint of 1907 and doubted that there ever was one. Clearly Duckworth acquired the Alston Rivers sheets in 1907 and put them, trimmed, in their own binding. This is on considerably smaller paper than the first edition and is clearly in a Duckworth binding. Loosely inserted is a typed letter signed by Harvey about the book saying that he could not help very much owing to the destruction of the Duckworth files by bombing, but that he suspected this might be the Reader’s Library edition, although this seems more likely to be an intermediary.         La Imprenta en Lima (1584-1824)

House of Medina, Santiago 1907 - 4 volumes: xcviii+487 pages with numerous facismilie title pages and index; 609 pages with facismile title pages and index; 582 pages with facsimile title pages ad index; 402 pages with index. Quarto (12" x 8 1/2") rebound in brown cloth and black uniform labels in gilt lettering and original wrappers bound in. 1st edition. Includes over 4000 titles with many title pages and wood-cuts reproduced, arranged in chronological order. He goes into great detail about virtually every book. Introduction deals with the individual printers and printing houses. Jose Toribio Medina was born on October 21, 1852, in Santiago, Chile. His father was a judge, Jose of the Medina Pillar, and his mother, Mariana Zavala, was of Basque ancestry. When he was three years old, Medina's father was named judge of Talca. There Medina attended a private school called Santiago. In 1860 the family was transferred to Valparaiso, but just two years later Medina's father became a quadriplegic when he was only 33 years old. Medina's father was sent to live in Santiago, and his mother was given a government pension on which to live and support the family. In 1865 Medina entered the National Institute and graduated in 1869, awarded with prizes in Latin and literature. Medina received an appointment as secretary of the Chilean legation to Lima, Peru, the same year he graduated law school. While in Lima he discovered the remarkable National Library under the guidance of its director, Francisco de Paula Rodriguez Vigil. Medina was not partial to diplomatic work, though it enabled him to travel and to saturate himself in the work he came to love as an investigator into the history of Chile through its volumes of documents. By 1875 he published his first volume of documentary history, a 17th century manuscript, Memories of the Kingdom of Chile and Don Francisco Meneses, written by Friar Juan de Jesus Maria. His travel became increasingly frequent, both to Europe and to the United States, digging through archives and searching to fill his bibliographies. In 1877 he published a 1,300-page volume titled History of the Colonial Literature of Chile. He went on to publish numerous bibliographies of works printed in the colonial period through out Latin America. Condition: some pages age darkened else a very good set.         AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND: OR HOW A PLANE FOLK DISCOVERED THE THIRD DIMENSION. TO WHICH IS ADDED AN OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF UNAEA.

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., Limd., 1907 - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-181 [182: blank] [183: ads] [184: blank], figures in text, original maroon cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. 137. "At the time of his death, Hinton's last book, AN EPISODE OF FLATLAND . was in press. D. Ouspensky. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1- 98. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1100. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), pp. 337 and 565.
