Hakluytus Pothumus or PURCHASE HIS PILGRIMES Contayning a History of the World in Sea Voyages and Land Travells

James Maclehose and Sons 1905 to 1907, Glasgow - 8vo, Printed in a limited edition of 1,000. Purchase, whose date of birth is uncertain, but was probably around 1577, was born at Thaxted, in Essex, England. He was educated at Cambridge, and in 1604 was appointed to the Vicarage of Eastwood near Leigh on the Thames. It was from the "lusty seamen" of this coastal town that he began to gather his tales of exploration and nautical adventure, a vocation he was to pursue (at no little cost to himself, or his family) until the end of his life. He continued to garner material from all sources, including the papers of Hakluyt (who died in 1616). His first volume appeared in 1613, and subsequent volumes appeared until 1625, often being reprinted and reissued with new volumes. Purchase died in 1626. The text of this edition is an exact reprint of the 1625 edition, with the exception that a more comprehensive index has been supplied. It may be understood that all volumes in this set show wear and bumping, with light to heavy soiling to the boards. The latter volumes, in particular, are troubled by superficial exposure to moisture, as the boards are water spotted, and some pages are quite foxed. There is, however, no odor, or evidence other than cosmetic of a deleterious affect. All volumes are complete, and all maps are present. All volumes may safely be handled and read. A good set, which, if it were prettier, which fetch a much more substantial price. Complete 20 volume set uniformly bound in original blue cloth [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Golden Crisis [1907 futurism]

Oasis Publishing Co., Columbus, OH 1907 - Columbus, OH: Oasis Publishing Co., 1907. First edition, signed and inscribed by Clark "yours for the millenium." on the ffep. 7" x 4.75", gilt pictorial dark blue cloth. Shelf wear, strongly along bottom edges, else VG+. Sturdy and bright. A look - in 1907 - by historical muralist Egbert Norman Clark at the transformation the human psyche was encountering during the first few years after the run of the nineteenth century. A familiar sounding passage echos from his introductory paragraph: ""The most advanced thinkers and students of sociology of the day all agree that the human race is now passing through a transitional period in its development, and that, as a social fabric, we are rapidly approaching a crisis." With chapter titles taken from astrology - numbered "ages" dominated each by a planet - and strong spiritual opinions by Clark throughout ("Humanity Is God!!!) - a fascinating, telling, uncategorizable futuristic book. Very rare in its first edition; this one is signed, and as such is probably not replaceable. Please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. André Gide, Gabriele d'Annunzio, George Bernard Shaw, Jean Giraudoux, Jules Renard, Victor Margueritte, Paul Verhaeren, Alain-Fournier y publient romans, nouvelles, pièces de théâtre, essais, critiques. FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
