Lord Randolph Churchill, wartime presentation copy to Churchill's research and writing assistant, historian Baron Bullock

London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. Very good. This is a presentation copy of the 1907 unabridged first one-volume edition of Churchill's first biographic work. The book was an early wartime gift to Churchill's research and writing assistant Alan Louis Charles Bullock. Affixed to the front pastedown is Admiralty stationery with typed print in four lines reading: "With Mr. Churchill's compliments. | A.L.C. Bullock, Esq., | 31, St. Margaret's Road, | Oxford." Given that Churchill's second tenure at the Admiralty lasted only from September 1939 until he became wartime Prime Minister in May 1940, we may confidently conclude that this gift to Bullock was presented during that eight-month interval. Alan Louis Charles Bullock (1914-2004) was a British historian, founding master of St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, and the author of major historical studies and biographies, perhaps most notably of Hitler. He was knighted in 1972 and was made a life peer, as Baron Bullock of Leafield, in 1976. Bullock spent the Second World War working for the BBC, after which he took up a fellowship at New College, Oxford, where he taught modern history and served as dean. He became known to the general public by appearing on the BBC radio program The Brains Trust. Immediately preceding The Second World War, Bullock assisted Churchill with research and writing for Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. Bullock was introduced to Churchill by another historian, William Deakin, on 5 January 1939. (Gilbert, Volume V, p.1032). Churchill's official biography records that Bullock worked, among other things, "on the origins of the Empire in Australia and New Zealand" as well as drafting other "special studies." (Gilbert, Volume V, pp. 1063 & 1089). Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939. The interruption continued through Churchill's wartime Premiership, period as Leader of the Opposition, second Premiership and concurrent time spent writing his six-volume history The Second World War. A History of the English Speaking Peoples was finally published between 1956-1958. The presentation volume is Churchill's first biographic work, Lord Randolph Churchill, which concentrates on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. The British first edition was published in two volumes in 1906. In 1907, the publisher issued this one-volume edition, containing the full text of the two volume work as originally published in 1906, but printed on thinner paper. The binding closely resembles that of the first edition of just a year earlier, the binding cloth and shelf appearance being nearly identical. This presentation copy is an extremely clean example. The binding is unusually square, clean, and bright with none of the usual toning and soiling and only minor wear to extremities. The sole flaw that prevents our grading this copy as near fine is four small punctures to the spine cloth near the rear hinge, extending 1.75 inches down from the author's name. The contents remain clean and tight. We find no previous ownership marks other than the presentation stationery. There is no spotting. The fore and bottom edges remain clean, the gilt top edge bright with only light dust soiling. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.4, Woods/ICS A8(b), Langworth p.74

        Chamber Music

London: Elkin Mathews,, 1907. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco solander box. Ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Endleaves mildly foxed, an exceptional copy. First edition, first impression, first issue with the laid paper endpapers with horizontal chain lines and correctly centred text of signature C. Elkin Mathews printed 509 copies of Chamber Music, and on its first publication pessimistically bound up a small proportion. Bernard Quaritch Ltd argued that only "fifty or a hundred" copies of the first variant were bound in 1907 (New Series: Bulletin 19, 1984). In the wake of Joyce's later fame, they reissued the remainder sheets in darker green cloth. This true first issue is scarce.

Correspondence of Mr. John Collier and His Family 1716-1780 Two Volumes The Collier Letters

1907 - The editor's great-grandfather was husband to one of John Collier's daughters. Dark green full cloth bindings, with gilt lettering on spine. Lettering still bright. Possibly privately printed. Printed by C. F. Hodgson & Son in London. Two kinds of library stamps obtain. The first, placed on the title pages, is "Our Lady's Priory, Newbury, Berks," a Servite establishment in England. The second stamp, on the next-to-last flyleaf, is "Servite High Library, 1952 W. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA." Perhaps a teacher from Our Lady's Priory in England brought these volumes to America? Two stamps on Volume One's title page were blotted out with black felt pen, but on Volume Two one stamp, the English one, was not covered. White reinforcement tape applied to hinges in both volumes. Foxing is present on title pages and protective tissue and flyleaves, but after those few pages no or very little foxing is seen. In a few places, the spine can be seen between the folios. Volume One has visible rubbing on the covers, plus sticker residue the size of a nickel on the spine. Volume Two has no residue on the spine. Volume One is 504 pages. Volume Two is 528 pages, plus about 10 pages of facsimile letters. Top edges are gilt. Other edges are rough cut. Top page edges on both volumes apparently were stamped by the high school library, as there are rectangles of black ink present, barely legible. Bindings of both volumes are tight and solid.         Shinran: Jodo Shin (Jodo Shinsu) Story and Sect Manual, Silk Bound, 1907

unknown, unknown 1907 - (unknown place) circa 1907: Ornately bound text, apparently dedicated to, and about, the Buddhist Monk (1173-1263), founder of the Jodo Shin (Jodo Shinsu) Buddhist sect; and about, or a manual for, the sect itself. In Japanese. Unpaginated. 12mo, silk bound, All Edges Gilt. Thread-bound ornate covers, black and gilt, appear to be in near fine condition to this eye. There is some soiling to the gilt page edges. Contents, which appear to be of rice paper, are lightly and homogeneously toned, hence also fine. A Japanese acquaintance has identified this piece as dating from 1907. His English is certainly, at least, better than my Japanese, and he added: "Then, we asked the great priest of the acquaintance. First, it turned out that this is all the books about 'SHINRAN' which is the founder of the Jodoshin sect. It praises, sings that is, means xx as gospel. I hear that the contents can go to an after-death paradise if the Shinran Saint's 'NAMUAMIDABUTSU' is recited. It is 'MONTO-NO-KOKOROE' which is written on the very last picture. That is, it is a manual of the Jodoshin sect. I think that it turns out that it is detailed if it asks the priest of the Jodoshin sect." A gorgeous piece. L41n [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Autograph letter signed to Philip Morrell, concerning the National Land and Housing Demonstration, 1907

1907. 2 pages, 203 × 126 mm. Dated 22 Ap[ril] 1907, written recto and verso of the first leaf of a bifolium of Colonial Office stationery, embossed crest at the head. Light crease from folding, a little soiled at the fold on the verso of second leaf, overall very good. Churchill writes to Morrell, MP for South Oxfordshire, philandering husband of Lady Ottoline Morrell, and in this context chairman of the executive of the National Land and Housing Demonstration, thanking him for the "trouble & all you expended upon the arrangements for the Drury Lane Meeting". More specifically he is grateful for "the help you gave me in the preparation of my speech upon such a v[er]y difficult & to me new subject." The purpose of the organization was to extend local authority powers of compulsory purchase for the provision of small holdings, allotments and "workmen's houses in town and country." Accompanied by a copy of the "Programme of the National Land and Housing Demonstration", quarto. (280 × 222 mm), 4pp., a little browned and soiled, creases from old folds, rust marks. Events included a lunch at the Holborn restaurant addressed by the prime minister, the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane "demonstration" at which Churchill spoke, and a performance of a selection of inspirational songs by a choir under the direction of T.D. Hawkin, audience participation encouraged. A good early letter showing Churchill throwing himself into campaigning for Liberal social issues.

The Novels: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey

London and New York: J M Dent & Co, E P Dutton & Co, 1907 A very good complete 6 volume set of Jane Austen's works illustrated by Charles E Brock, issued as part of Dent's Series of English Idylls. Each volume has 24 colour illustrations by Brock (including frontispiece and decorative title page). Comprising: Persuasion, 1909, 216 pp; Pride and Prejudice, 1907, 336pp; Mansfield Park, 1908, 396pp; Sense and Sensibility, 1908, 308pp; Emma, 1909, 395pp; Northanger Abbey, 1907, 206pp. Dent published an earlier edition with illustrations by H M and C E Brock in 1898 - this later set has a much expanded collection of plates by C E Brock. In the original half leather binding with marbled boards and top page edges with gilt. The bindings have been expertly repaired to provide new leather spines with raised bands, gilt compartments, author name in gilt and gilt title labels. The original marbled endpapers have been retained and match the boards. All the bindings are therefore sound and tight and in very good condition. They have some wear to the original leather corners. The contents are all very clean with bright clean plates and only the very occasional light mark or spot. The paper has light brown toning to the outer page edges. Pride and Prejudice has a minute repaired paper tear to the bottom margin of the plate facing p96 and Mansfield Park has similar to the top gutter of the plate facing p23. A few pages (mainly Emma - 23, 25 and 373) have had the top page corner turned over at some point. Northanger Abbey has a small ink inscription to a preliminary '18 Chapel Cry'. A very handsome set. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

        Lord Randolph Churchill

London, Macmillan and Co. Limited,, 1907. Octavo. Original red cloth, covers double-ruled in blind, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, and 4 other illustrations or facsimiles, 2 of them coloured. Spine a little spotted, lettering oxidized, occasional spot-foxing, a very good copy. First one-volume edition. Inscribed on the half-title: "To William H. Buist from Winston S. Churchill, 1908 [and added later] - Nov. 1922." An interesting inscription which brackets Churchill's time as Liberal MP for Dundee. Having been chosen by Asquith as President of the Board of Trade, Churchill stood for re-election in Manchester and was defeated, he was then elected in the safe seat of Dundee. He represented Dundee until November 1922, when Lloyd George's coalition was voted out. Churchill was too ill to campaign in the early stages of the election; "Clementine bravely stood in for him but quickly discovered that the mood of the electorate had turned ugly. When a pale and fragile Churchill at last arrived he had to be carried to the platform on a makeshift sedan, and address the audience seated. He was howled down." (ODNB) Churchill was defeated by E.D. Morel, the Independent Labour Party candidate and an outspoken pacifist - he described his "war-mongering" opponent as "a personal force for evil" - and by Edwin Scrymegour, a Scots prohibitionist who had first stood for Dundee in the year of Churchill's election, and had contested every subsequent election. The recipient of this copy, William Huntley Buist, was Senior Magistrate of Dundee, had been the Chairman of the Dundee War Savings Committee, and in 1932 became Lord Provost.
