Typed Letter Signed, one page, in French, with translation, Paris, 15 November 1966

Lam writes to Varian Fry (1907-1967), the American journalist who ran a rescue network in Vichy, France that helped some 2,000 to 4,000 anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees to escape the Nazis and the Holocaust. Among the artists that Fry helped escape to American were writer Andrew Breton, pianist Heinz Jolles, and artists Marcel Duchamp, Jacques Lipchitz, Max Ernst, Victor Brauner, and Wifredo Lam. Our letter refers to the print that Lam created, "Untitled (for Flight)," as a part of a fundraising portfolio for the International Rescue Committee, a group that helped finance his flight from Europe. Lam addresses his correspondent as "Dear Friend." He thanks Fry for his letter as well as for "all the necessary information from the Rescue Committee in New York to make the litho in question." He says that he is going to Zurich where he "usually works with the engraver Emil Mathieu... where everything will be done." Lam continues, "I am very happy that you have found me because I am truly pleased to be able to do something for the Rescue Committee that helped during a critical and difficult time in my life." He refers to his becoming a client of the Emergency Rescue Committee, "artist no. 998 on Varian Fry's list of intellectuals and artists to be aided in their flight from fascism" (see Wifredo Lam and the International Avant-Garde, 1923-1982, by Lowery Stokes Sims, 2001). Lam's Cuban visa and his having exhibited in New York with Picasso made him a person who qualified for rescue. Lam then enumerates the "friends who are going to miss this artistic event, Benjamin Peret, Victor Brauner, Oscar Domingues and lastly, our great friend Andrew Breton," all of whom had died before the date of this letter. He ends by informing Fry that he will "let you know as soon as the litho is finished." He signs the letter in a large hand, "Wi Lam." The lithograph, "Untitled (for Flight)," was printed in Zurich in 1967 by Mathieu. It was then published in the limited edition Flight Portfolio originally organized by Varian Fry, but assembled after his death, in 1971 by the International Rescue Committee to raise funds for Holocaust victims. Lam was one of 12 artists who produced prints for this portfolio. Others included Chagall, Miro, Calder and Lipchitz. Lam studied painting in Havana and in 1923 continued his studies in Spain. After fighting against Franco in the Spanish Civil War, Lam went to Paris where he met Picasso who introduced him to other artists including Miro and Leger. Lam was one of Picasso's only students. In 1939 Lam met Andre Breton. Lam worked with Andre Breton collaborating on the publication of Breton's poem "Fata Morgana," which Lam illustrated. When the Nazi's were close to Paris, in 1940, Lam fled to Marseille where he spent time with other artists including Max Ernst and Victor Brauner. He spent time at the Villa Air-Bel, the headquarters of Varian Fry and the International Rescue Committee. When Lam did get rescued, he left for Havana, first spending time in Martinique with Andrew Breton. He later spent time with Breton in Haiti as well. In 1952 Lam returned to settle in Paris and in the 1960s his work showed his interest for engraving. Internationally renowned with works in major museums, Lam's style has been described as fusing "Western modernism with African and Caribbean symbolism." [www.wifredolam.net/en]. The influences of Surrealism, Cubism, African and Cuban cultures combine in his art. His letters rarely become available.

Haig did not begin etching until 1870 and was essentially self-taught. In 1880 Haig, along with Francis Seymour Haden and others, founded the Royal Academy of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Haig always distinguished between architectural drawings and drawings of architecture, and in all of his etchings, his objective was to incorporate a balance between a romantic and dramatic effect, but also to depict the subject as accurately as possible.

Lord Randolph Churchill, signed by Churchill

London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. Very good plus. This is a signed copy of the 1907 unabridged first one-volume edition of Winston Churchill's first biographic work, the subject of which is his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. Inked in black on the first free endpaper is the author's signature: "Winston S. Churchill." The work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. The British first edition was published in two volumes in 1906. In 1907, the publisher issued this one-volume edition, containing the full text of the two volume work as originally published in 1906, but printed on thinner paper. The binding closely resembles that of the first edition of just a year earlier, the binding cloth and shelf appearance being nearly identical. This signed copy is superior to most we see, with a square, tight binding that retains unfaded color and bright spine gilt. We note minor wear to hinges and extremities and a bump to the lower front corner. The contents remain free of spotting. The endpapers show some transfer browning from the pastedown glue. The sole previous ownership mark is a decorative bookplate affixed to the front pastedown, clearly vintage as it has partially prevented transfer browning from the pastedown glue to the facing, signed first free endpaper. The gilt top edge is a bit dusty but still bright. The fore and bottom edges are clean with modest age-toning. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.4, Woods/ICS A8(b), Langworth p.74

        The Writings of Oscar Wilde

Keller and Co. 1907 - This is set number 10, consistently numbered as such, of the Edition de Grand Luxe Keller and Company 1907 publication, limited to 100 sets. This is a complete set of 15 volumes, in full leather covers (8.25" x 5.75"), green background to the front and back boards, brown background to the spine, with extensive gilt ornamentation and lettering, red and gilt chrysanthemums enbossed front and back, and a chrysanthemum with its stem on the spine. This set has been recovered by Tapley Co. NY, whose name is imprinted on a blank front end page in some volumes. All the covers show some wear, mostly minor, but four have notable flaws. The back cover to "A House of Pomegranates" is almost loose. The cover of "Dorian Gray" has cracks to the upper sides of the spine, causing a partial looseness to the front. "Essays, Criticisms and Reviews" has similar cracks, with a slightly loose back cover. "Intentions" is missing small pieces at the back cover, near the spine. That cover is not loose. Most insides are exceptionally clean, with no notable stains to all but one volume, "Intentions", which has recurrent stains, mostly light, but noticeable. The binding in all volumes is tight, with no loose or missing pages. The many illustrations, each of which is printed twice, with two different tonal qualities, are in fine condition, with all the lettered tissue guards in place, clean and without tears. There are no stamps or other attachments. I've found no writing. There are no page tears or creases. The above photos are of this set. I have more, and can email these to interested buyers. Please note that international shipping would be $300.00, fully insured, and declared for the full value. US shipping would also be fully insured, with a shipping charge of $100.00 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A Book of Masks

London: Elkin Mathews. 1907. First. First edition. Printed gray wrappers. Small chips to the yapped edges, else very good. This copy contains five manuscript poems in the hand of Underwood, and is Inscribed, but not signed: "To Alan because he cared --- [yin and yang symbol] Washington June, 1915." Underwood was a talented American poet who worked in the State Department and wrote in a decadent manner with some affinities to the pre-Raphaelite movement. He was an accomplished veteran of the homosexual underground scene of the period and is perhaps best known as the mentor and confidant of Hart Crane (and one of the best sources of information on Underwood is Clive Fisher's biography Hart Crane: A Life). .
