        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 17. III. 1907. - 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-4to. An Ludwig Hevesi: "[.]

[Portrait photograph]: Spartan and Olympian Black Women's Basketball Teams

[1907]. Albumen photograph on thick card. Approximately 7.75" x 5.5". One tack hole at top, edges slightly rough (possibly trimmed but seemingly without much loss of image - just touching the hair of the uppermost woman in the picture) overall very good or better. A richly toned image of 20 well-dressed African-American women and two men (presumably coaches). The woman have banners reading "Olympian", "Spartan", and "Jun[ior?]" and hold a basketball that is painted "S.H.S.B.B.T. '07." Each of the women has a letter sewn onto her blouse, either an "O", "S", "J", or "I", presumably indicating that they are from Olympian, Spartan, Junior[?], or the unidentified "I" team (possibly the Independent Pleasure Club team from Orange, New Jersey, another pioneering women's team).Presumably this is a group shot of several black women's teams, and as near as we can determine predates any other images of black women basketball teams by three years. According to the website "The Brooklyn Game" (http://thebrooklyngame.com/brooklyns-first-basketball-team/): "Brooklyn was home to a historic basketball first, way back in 1906, when the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn, an African American social and sports organization, launched the first formally organized and independently run all-black basketball team... [they] played their first game in 1907 as part of a dynamic all-black Olympian Athletic League." The article also mentions: "Like many Black Fives Era men's basketball teams, the Smart Set Athletic Club had a sister team called the Spartan Girls Athletic Club. The Spartan Girls were one of America's first all-black women's basketball teams."According to the Black Fives Foundation, dedicated to the history of African-Americans in basketball: "...the very first all-black female basketball team --- the New York Girls (1910-1914), champions of New York and New Jersey in 1910! There were dozens of other early African American women's teams, including the Spartan Girls (1910-1914)...".This image pre-dates their starting date for the team by three years, as well as pre-dating the first image of the team by the same amount of time. We can find no mention of any earlier clubs, although obviously the Olympian, Junior, and the unidentified "I" club would also qualify to share that honor. .

Archive of material relating to the artwork for Halford's Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice (1889) and Dry Fly Entomology (1897), including original watercolors of the Ephemera Danica, Nymphae and Mayfly by Ellen Kemp, colored and uncolored proof states of the plates, autograph notes from Halford to Kemp, notes on coloring the plates, and correspondence between Kemp and the publishers

[London, 1907. 4to and smaller. In custom folding box with morocco spine label. Kemp, Ellen. Kemp, Ellen. 4to and smaller. Halford's Artist & Colorist, Mrs. Ellen Kemp. Fine archive of material relating to Ellen Kemp's artwork for Halford's angling books, chiefly concerning Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice and Dry Fly Entomology. The original watercolors appear as plates XV and XVI of Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice. In addition to the original designs, engraved by Babbage, Mrs. Kemp was responsible for most of the hand-coloring for the finished plates and mounting the artificial flies in volume two of the deluxe issue. The archive includes a set of plates bearing her signature "E Kemp del. at nat", Halford's initialled approval of sample coloring, and her own patterns and notes for the order in which colors are to be applied. Several of the publisher's memoranda discuss the author's insistence that silver wire be used. Mrs. Kemp's retained copy of her letter dated 19 November 1896 bears her calculation and notes "my price would be £12. 13. 0. for mounting 108 sets of 100 flies with wire, on 108 dozens of cards". The association of Kemp with Halford's books was a long one. In Halford's autograph card to her dated May 12, 1889, when Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice was in preparation, he writes "Will you kindly sign the enclosed sketches in pencil & return them to me. Do not trouble to clean them or anything else as they are wanted to bind in a presentation copy of the book. ... I know you are worried about the coloured plates, at the same time pray think that I quite appreciate the excellence of the work as contributing to the general success." There is also later correspondence from Vinton requesting her to color plates in 1907. Tony Hayter, in his 2002 book, F.M. Halford and the Dry-Fly Revolution, makes no mention of Kemp and does not appear to have drawn upon this archive. UNIQUE AND OUTSTANDING.

        The Golden Crisis [1907 futurism]

Columbus, OH: Oasis Publishing Co., 1907 Columbus, OH: Oasis Publishing Co., 1907. First edition, signed and inscribed by Clark "yours for the millenium..." on the ffep. 7" x 4.75", gilt pictorial dark blue cloth. Shelf wear, strongly along bottom edges, else VG+. Sturdy and bright. A look - in 1907 - by historical muralist Egbert Norman Clark at the transformation the human psyche was encountering during the first few years after the run of the nineteenth century. A familiar sounding passage echos from his introductory paragraph: ""The most advanced thinkers and students of sociology of the day all agree that the human race is now passing through a transitional period in its development, and that, as a social fabric, we are rapidly approaching a crisis." With chapter titles taken from astrology - numbered "ages" dominated each by a planet - and strong spiritual opinions by Clark throughout ("Humanity Is God!!!) - a fascinating, telling, uncategorizable futuristic book. Very rare in its first edition; this one is signed, and as such is probably not replaceable. Please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. L2

        4 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

Verschiedene Orte, 1907. - Verschiedene Formate. George Sand [.]" (14. VIII. 1907).

STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, Retold by Laurence Housman

London & New York Hodder and Stoughton and Charles Scribner's Sons 1907 - First edition, with the title-page imprint added for America but with the same sheets that were printed in England by Butler and Tanner and used for the first English issue. With 50 fine tipped-in colour plates by Edmund Dulac. The plates tipped to heavy green-gray stock, each with a captioned tissue-guard. 4to, original rust-colored cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt and black on the spine and upper cover in Arabian motif. 133 pp. text + 50 tipped in plates on heavy mounting paper. A very handsome copy, the plates all pristine and fine, the text clean and fresh with no foxing or toning at all. The cloth is beautifully preserved, bright and attractive with very little evidence of age or use. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY EDMUND DULAC. Here we find a collection of stories from the ARABIAN NIGHTS superbly illustrated by Edmund Dulac. The original Persian fairy tales of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," "The Fisherman and the Genie," and several others are colorfully rendered on tipped-in plates. Dulac’s affinity for oriental design becomes apparent in these exquisite, almost jewel-like images. We find the profound influence of oriental art and especially Persian miniatures in this group of exotic paintings. Intricate colors and patterns are juxtaposed to create lyrical scenes and bring the characters such as Morgiana and the Queen of the Ebony Isles to life on the page. The artist achieved intense effects in shading and atmosphere in his nocturne scenes such as "The Lady Advanced to Meet Him." As we turn the pages, we feel drawn into a mysterious world of exotic moods and clandestine encounters. "The Arabian Nights gave Dulac an opportunity to indulge in his nocturnes; the the softness of the gleam of moonlight on stone, or on shadowy figures, and his use of ultramarine, indigo and Prussian blue, mingled with purples and violets, brought to the illustrations the calm and mystery of Eastern nights."-Colin White "Leicester Galleries displayed the Dulac watercolors for THE ARABIAN NIGHTS in the autumn of 1907, at the same time the book was (originally) released. With unanimous praise the book was received by the critics and every picture sold even before the exhibition was opened to the general public. In light of this overwhelming success, Leicester Galleries promptly signed a contract with Dulac for one book a year, the subject to be chosen jointly between them and in consultation with Hodder & Stoughton."-Susan Meyer. The modern reader can only be grateful that such an arrangement was made, as we shall always have the body of extraordinary illustrations that ensued. This lovely edition of STORIES FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, liltingly illustrated by Dulac, will be a cherished addition to any library. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
