Tennyson Alfred Lord
Macmillan, 1905. With an engraved portrait frontispiece of Tennyson after J. Mayall. 8vo, beautifully bound in full crimson morocco, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled, separating compartments elaborately decorated with fully tooled panels gilt, lettered in gilt in one compartment, the covers with very fine gilt tooling incorporating dense and wide floral borders surrounded by multiple gilt fillet lines, the turnovers gilt rolled, marbled end-leaves, all edges gilt, a very handsome binding indeed. viii, 900 + (2) Index and colophon pp. A very fine copy, beautifully preserved and especially handsome. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AND A VERY FINE COLLECTION OF THE POET'S WORK. ONE OF THE GREAT POETS OF HIS TIME. Tennyson was made Poet Laureate in succession to Wordsworth in 1850. He was held in the highest regard by Victoria and Albert. All of his great works are included here, including the "Idylls" and the "Charge of the Light Brigade". Tennyson was the first to be raised to a British peerage for his writing. He is still today one of the most popular British poets. In writing Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter, ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature, as source material for his poetry. The 'Idylls' for instance and the related poems were based on the Arthurian legends, and retell the story of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him in blank verse. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sutcliffe, Halliwell
London T. Werner Laurie 1905 - 8vo. 342pp. + 2pp. ads. Publisher's bottle green cloth titled and ruled in gilt to spine and front board. Minor bumping and edgewear, a very good copy indeed. Internally clean, minor spotting to prelims and some lightm spots of foxing to the page edges. Pencil ownership to front flyleaf. Halliwell Sutcliffe appears to have been one of those writers, largely of historical fiction, who was borderline obsessed with his local countryside; in this case the Yorkshire Dales; he seems to have set out to do for them what R. Murray Gilchrist did for the Peak District albeit without soul possessing gloves made of human skin (that was a plot device in The Stone Dragon, I'm not actually suggesting that Gilchrist was possessed by a pair of.never mind). Sutcliffe's Yorkshire Dales novels usually concentrate on the tumultuous and violent history of the area, and this title is no exception: a mysterious hound of ill omen, The Barguest, prowls the barren wilderness visiting ill fortune one those that hear its call, all tied up in a bloody tale of revenge for a clannish massacre to end an age old family feud. It appears that Yorkshire hasn't changed much. Rare. junecat [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

." Berlin, im Juni 1905. Albert Hoffa. Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov).
8vo. 13, (1) pp., final blank. Original printed wrappers. Extremely rare pamphlet by Lenin concerning the party's historic split into Bolshevik and Menshevik factions, titled in German: "Parteibeho[e]rden gegen die Partei" (the Russian title translates as: "Declaration and documents concerning the schism between central institutions and party"). The pamphlet was printed in January 1905 by the Russian Social Democatic Workers' Party. - In this harsh and bilious text Lenin criticizes three party members, Glebov-Avilov, Valentin, and Nikitich, whom he accuses of double-dealing and anti-Bolshevik agitation. All three were members of the Central Committee, as was Lenin himself. Although Bolsheviks and Mensheviks formally constituted two different parties in 1905, they were in fact still close, and what Lenin calls the three members' "treason" was merely their sympathy and agitation for the Mensheviks. Unlike Lenin, most Bolshevik leaders were still prepared to co-operate with their former allies and even harboured hopes for reunification. Lenin's views of the time, as evidenced in this brochure, held a fringe position even within his own faction. His text, however, was widely distributed among the local committees and helped Lenin achieve increasing popularity. A suggestion voiced by "Vpered" that the work be translated into all European languages as soon as possible never materialized. - From the collection of Marcel Bekus with his small oval stamp on the reverse of the title page. Binding loosened; upper cover and title page loose. A few pencil notes to wrappers, but well-pres … [Click Below for Full Description]

- (Paris), 1905. (2), ii, 978 pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, spine in compartments and with gilt lettering, original covers preserved. Zaleski 1772. Reprint of the complete sets of the journals 'Narodnaya Volja' (1879-1885), 'Listok Narodnoi Voli' (1880-1881) and 'Rabochaya Gazeta' (1880-1881), edited by V. Bazilevsky. Includes documents (programs), proclamations and other material published by these journals. The journal of the radical political group 'Narodnaya Volya' (People's Will), a group of radical revolutionaries which broke away from the 'Zemlya i Volya' (Land and Liberty) at a famous meeting. The Narodnaya repesented those who were convinced that efforts to promote an economic revolution, which had formed the basis of the 'to the people' movement, were useless unless political liberty was first attained; hence, they addressed themselves directly to the task of wringing from the government by force and threats concessions which would allow the people of Russia to participate in the work of the government. This program made a wide appeal, outside the ranks of the revolutionaries themselves, to a large body of the public. The Rabochaya Gazeta (Workers' Gazette) was produced by a group of about thirty students capable of spreading propaganda through speeches and leaflets among the working classes. It was written in a deliberately simple and popular style and contained stories with a social background, descriptions of the difficulties of the working class life, vivid accounts of the unemployment, dismissals, fines and reduced wages in various factories in … [Click Below for Full Description]

St. Petersburg: Tip, 1905. Quartos (ca. 33 × 23 cm). Original pictorial self-wrappers; 8-16 pp. each. Each issue with numerous black-and-white, and some color, cartoons and drawings and a color title illustration. About very good to very good issues, with the occasional light wear, dust-soiling, and light stamps; only one issue with somewhat darker stain, affecting only the wrappers. Substantial run of the striking Russian satirical journal, which was the first of numerous anti-Tsarist publications to appear in the aftermath of the 1905 Russian Revolution. Cathy Porter notes that these journals were, in particular, a reaction to Bloody Sunday, a protest which left hundreds dead and many more wounded: "Alongside the struggle in street and factory was the struggle for the free press. Ministers and clerics suffered assassination more by the pen than the bullet as the revolution strove for the expression of powerful emotions long suppressed. A flood of satirical journals poured from the presses, honouring the dead and vilifying the mighty. Drawings of frenzied immediacy and extraordinary technical virtuosity were combined with prose and verse written in a popular underground language, veiled in allgory, metaphor and references to the past [...] For a few brief months the journals spoke with a great and unprecedented rage that neither arrest nor exile could silence" (Blood & Laughter: Caricatures from the 1905 Revolution, pp. 18-19). Among the contributors to the "Spectator" during its five-month run were A. V. Amfiteatrov, Ia. V. Godin, V. I. Khorekhin, V. S. Likhachev, M. I. M … [Click Below for Full Description]
