Exceptional Silk Programme of the Gala at the Royal Opera House, (1841-1910, King of Great Britain), ALEXANDRA (of Denmark, 1844-1925, his Queen), and ALFONSO XIII (1886-1941, King of Spain 1886-1931)]

1905 - the border, printed in full colours, showing the arms of Spain and Great Britain, the Badges of the Golden Fleece and the Garter, with vignette photos of Edward VII, Queen Alexandra and King Alfonso, the programme, under the management of André Messager, consisting of an Act each from Romeo & Juliet, La Bohème (with Melba as Mimi and Caruso as Rodolpho) and The Huguenots, 14¾" x 11¼" plus fringes of one and a half inches all round, designed and printed by Finden Brown & Co., London, for Covent Garden, 8th June The young Alfonso XIII had arrived three days earlier on an official state visit. He was also known to be seeking a bride, and the expectation was that he might think of Princess Patricia of Connaught. However, at the 'family dinner' that evening at Buckingham Palace, he was much taken by a bashful Princess Victoria Eugenie. He continued the courtship, sending postcards on his travels, and they were married in Madrid on the following 31st May.

The Flower Book. <strong>Reproductions of Thirty Eight Watercolour Designs by Edward Burne-Jones.</strong>

London: Reproduced by Henry Piazza et Cie for the Fine Art Society, 1905. A posthumous publication arranged by Georgiana Burne-Jones of images of fantasy flowers done for the artist's own pleasure. 38 stunning colour plates all appearing in a circle of about 15cms in diameter. One of 300 copies (this no.92) with the number in manuscript with the monogram of the Fine Art Society (the publisher), also written in ink. Printed in red and green except for the facsimile list of flowers made by Burne-Jones at the rear which is printed in black. Large 4to., this copy beautifully bound at the time at the WH Smith bindery under Douglas Cockerell in full dark green morocco with gilt lettering on spine and upper cover with gilt borders. A very handsome copy, with some expert repair to the binding and first few leaves. Georgiana Burne-Jones arranged for this reproduction of Burne-Jones's exquisite watercolours after his death. He did these images for his own pleasure and they were not originally intended to be seen. They were fantasy interpretations of flowers and the subjects which their names suggest. Many of these exquisite images draw on Arthurian and classical legend, in true Pre-Raphaelite style, as well as the Bible. It is thought that because Burne-Jones did these for himself they may contain a fuller expression of himself than exists elsewhere in his work. Exquisitely bound at the time at the important WH Smith bindery in full Cockerell style. Many of the Flower Books remain loose and unbound. A very good, handsome copy.

Norway and the Union with Sweden.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1905. Small octavo. Original red linen cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. Spine slightly rolled and sunned, a little rubbed at extremities. A very good copy. First English edition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To the Attorney-General, Wm. H. Moody with the compliments of Fridtjof Nansen, Lysaker 22 June, 1905". Moody was Secretary of the US Navy from 1902?4, and US Attorney General from 1904?6, under Theodore Roosevelt. "The independence of Norway in 1905 was an important turning point for Nansen, when he was called on to ease the diplomatic crisis over independence; the next year he was named independent Norway's first minister to Great Britain" (Grolier Club, Books on Ice, 2005, p. 66). Nansen's biographer, Roland Huntford, writes that the great explorer "put his name to a small book - Norway and the Union with Sweden - a pamphlet prepared once more by officials, elaborating the legalities of the Norwegian case for separate consuls. It appeared in English, French and German, early in June [1905]". Nansen's "small book" is not common commercially and inscribed copies are decidedly elusive, this being a particularly attractive exemplar in being addressed from the home that Nansen designed and built at Lysaker.

Neue Malereien für Decken un Wände. Dritte Serie. Cover title: Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Neue Malereien fur Decken und Wande. 24 Tafeln. Serie III.

Leipzig. Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). 1905. 21 of 24 color lithographic plates, 19 1/2 x 15 inches, decorative color paper-covered board portfolio with ribbon ties. Portfolio worn and soiled, with loss; MISSING plates 42, 51 and 52. Scattered soiling, edge tears and creasing in margins of several plates. Soiling in two plates (44 and 45); plate 38 has 4 ink spots, 2 of which are in the image (from paints used by a copyist). Beautifully executed Art Nouveau designs for decorating walls and ceilings created by Paul Grohmann, who had an extended career in creating such portfolio design publications. A number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics that emerged in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. Two plates feature a single image, ten feature two images, while the balance feature three or more images. The price list at the front of the portfolio indicates that the plates could be purchased individually or as a set and were available in two different formats (at different prices). The series begins with Plate 29 and ends with Plate 52. The colors used are primarily in pastel shades augmented by vibrant gold outlining. This type of applied art portfolio is seldom found complete, since they were used as working references. An extremely scarce title; no listing appears in WorldCat.

Early 20th century sketchbook including disturbing outsider art, perhaps used as a tattoo flash book

Hudson, New Hampshire 1905 - This 8" x 13" repurposed ledger contains approximately 90 pages of illustrations with six additional pages of textual "harriscopes" (horoscopes) and astrological predictions. Many of the smaller drawings are similar to primitive, turn-of-the-century tattoo designs shown at the Paul Rogers Tattoo Research Center Archives. The illustrations, captions, and notations are in pencil. The horoscope text is in ink. The binding is loose, but the pages are firmly attached (some have been removed). The spine covering has perished. The artists credit themselves in some captions and within several designs. Two images depicting tattooed hands include the names of Helen Philbrick and M. H. Daigneault accompanied by the text "artist on hand" and one illustration shows a hand holding a business card that reads, "Chas. H. Firm Daigneault & Traveling Artists." Much of this folk artwork depicts traditional tattoo subjects including animals, firemen's helmets, flags, flowers, fraternal emblems, furls, initials, mermaids and mythical creatures, religious and occult symbols, scrollwork, swords, woman's profiles and legs (some tattooed), etc. However, many of the larger images depict people and are more unusual: * a man in formal dress with top hat and cane, *a man riding a hog, *a cartoonish baseball player, *a "Jewish Junk Dealer" named R'Hags, *a school teacher, *an Irish hod carrier with a jug of whiskey, *a Turkish Janissary, *Punch with a devil walking on his nose, *Jesus Christ on the cross with a lance about to pierce his side, *a sailor firing a cannon, and *a fanciful Apache chief. There are also detailed, yet still primitive, drawings of firefighting wagons (fire engine, chemical wagon, and ladder wagon), a Lowell & Nashua Rail Road street car, a battleship, a 4-4-0 locomotive, a Civil War battle, a whaling scene, children outside the Hudson School, and a coastal artillery battery. Circus sideshow acts are well represented with Siamese twins, Taemoto the big footed man, a Living Skeleton, the Elephant Boy, Madame Waldon the Fat Woman, a fortune teller, a sword swallower, an adult-faced baby, a horse without legs, a two-headed cow, a five-legged chicken, etc. The fortune teller image has a bubble caption reading, "See all In this Book - PAY 5¢ For the Boys BANK". The final ten illustrations are bizarre, some violently so: *"Law giver Moses in 7th Veil of the Temple Seeing 4 Holy Angels," *"Worship of the Sun . . . The Dural Sign," *an Aztec priest cutting the heart out of a virgin, *a Druidic Yew-Tree Wicker Man, and *a number of torture scenes with naked victims (a disemboweled man who has been nailed to a table, a woman being roasted on a spit, a bound woman being drizzled with molten lead, a man hung by his thumbs, and a female about to be forced into an Iron Maiden. Certainly unique. As of 2017, nothing similar found in the trade, in auction records, or OCLC institutions.

Realty Trust Map of Brooklyn and Queens Boroughs Greater New York. 1905. Map title: Realty Trust Map of the Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, Greater New York. With Present and Projected Transit Lines, Elevated and Surface Railways, Tunnels and Subways.

New York. Realty Trust. 1905. Color street map, sheet size approximately 38 x 32 inches, folding as issued to pamphlet 9 1/2 x 4 inches, black and white photo illustrations and text on verso. Several long separations at folds and edges (4 inch separation at centre of central vertical fold, separations up to 1 inch at fold intersections); light soiling to cover panels; map is clean and bright. A scarce broadside promoting the Brooklyn Properties of Realty Trust: "In presenting this map we desire to impress on the reader the splendid properties we offer for sale in large and small plots. With the exception of the central portion of Brooklyn (the oldest part, which is already built up), that section of the southwestern part of Brooklyn lying between Ocean Parkway and teh bay, enjoying to-day the best transit facilities, will reap the most benefit from the improvements now under way, notably the City Tunnel and the Manhattan Bridge...This section of South Brooklyn is in its infancy. Real estate is abnormally cheap. Purchasers buying there now cannot lose...." Several four-panel sections tout the desirability of the area; one section declares that "The East River Tunnel to Brooklyn and Queens will increase lot values in both boroughs" with a cross-section showing the progress of the work on the tunnels. Other sections include "Personal Opinions on Real estate in Brooklyn," "Newspaper Comments on Brooklyn Real Estate" and "The Bronx - Brooklyn A Comparison." The detailed street map centres on Brooklyn and shows Elevated Lines, Electrical Traction Lines, Surface Trolley Lines, Steam Railroads, Rapid Transit Subway, and Proposed Subways. The map is copyright 1905 by August R. Ohman, Map Publisher, Draughtsman & Engraver, with address at 97-101 Warren St., N.Y. No listing for this real estate broadside is found in WorldCat.

Dušan Jurkovic (August 23, 1868 - December 21, 1947) was a Slovak architect, ethnographer and artist. One of the best-known promoters of Slovak art in 20th century Czechoslovakia, he is remembered mostly due to his projects of numerous World War I cemeteries in Galicia. Jurkovic was born on 23 August 1886 in Turá Lúka (then Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Slovakia), to two local folk artists. He graduated from a local school in Sopron and moved to Vienna, where between 1884 and 1889 he studied at the National School of Industry under Camillo Sitte. He briefly worked in Martin, where he became fascinated with folk carpenters and their works in wood. Then he moved to Vsetín (eastern Moravia), where he continued his studies at the atelier of Michal Urbánek. Together with his bureau he co-authored the buildings of the 1895 Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague and also authored numerous other buildings in Bohemia. In 1899 he moved to Brno, where he designed his own house and a new lodging house for the local school. During his stay in Brno he became friends with local Czech writers Jirí Mahen, Mrštík brothers and Josef Merhaut. Among his best-known designs realized in Brno was a villa in Žabovresky, combining local folk art with the state-of-the-art modernist trends of Vienna. He also authored the design of the Society of Friends of Arts building, a distant cousin to Viennese Wiener Werkstätte and the geometric school. He also prepared a project of reconstruction of the castle in Nové Mesto nad Metují. Mobilized by the Austro-Hungarian Army during the World War I, he became one of the most notable members of the War Graves Unit. He authored approximately 35 war cemeteries near Nowy Zmigród in Galicia (now Poland), most of them heavily influenced by local Lemko (Rusyn) folk art and carpentry. After the war he returned to newly founded Czechoslovakia and settled in Bratislava. Among the best known of his later works is the tombs of Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Milan Rastislav Štefánik, monument to Slovak National Uprising, and the cable car station at Lomnický štít in the High Tatras mountains. He died on 21 December 1947. (Wikipedia). KEYWORDS:arts/architecture/slowakia/tsechie/photo

Serat Menak [ The Book of Menak].

1905.. 276 pages of Javanese manuscript written in the hanacaraka script in a lined journal, double card covers have separated on the lower cover and a few unrelated printed leaves in Dutch (including a form in Dutch authorising someone to collect wood!) bound in presumably to give the covers strength are now visible. Even browning, some occasional stains in the margins, insect damage at lower corner last two leaves not affecting text, one leaf written upside down, first leaf creased, binding skewed and worn but still sound. A very nice manuscript copy of an important Javanese work. 35 x 20.5cm. This manuscript is of The Javanese Menak which are romances inspired by stories of Persian origin based on the adventures of Amir Hamzah or Amir Ambyah, the uncle of the prophet Muhammad. The MS is written in a clear hand in Javanese hanacaraka script. Some initial leaves give a list of the contents of the book as well as a history of its provenance which states that this is a book of Menak, written by Sumantri in Blora, bought by Mas Martosudirjo, head teacher in Blora, 1905 and signed by Martosudirjo. The preliminary leaves are followed by the manscript of the story itself which is in macapat verse beginning in Durma metre. A small notation in the top left corner of p.1 of the MS seems to indicate that the writing of the manuscript was begun on May 12th, 1905 and completed on September 12th 1905. .

        Der Internationale Schach-Kongress des Barmer Schach-Vereins 1905

Barmen: Kommissions -Verlag Adolf Graeper, 1905. 28 with frontispiece, diagrams, plates and tables. Royal octavo (9 1/2 x 6 1/4") bound in original three quarter pebbled boards with spine label. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5268) First edition. The richly endowed Barmen Chess Association commemorated its 40th year anniversary with a celebration centered around two major tournaments and three strong "Hauptturnieren." The innovative organizers added such melodious entertainment as a "Singspiel" involving a 60 person chorus and a three act musical comedy, "Der Seekadett." The latter feature a game with children as chessmen and an original music score the now famous Barmen Chess Waltz. Bachmann opines that it was a "grand chess feast, made even nicer by Rheinsche friendliness." The two principal contests were divided into "A" and "B" categories - the first being reserved for experienced grandmasters and masters, the second for promising young masters who had not achieved a tournament victory. First and second prizes in this category (1500 and 1000 Mmrks, respectively) were divided between Janowski (+9 -3 +3) and Maroczy (+7 -1 +7) with identical point totals of 10 1/2. The mercurial Janowski head the victory list with nine wins, but dropped full points to Bernstein, Berger and Gottschall - while an obviously fatigued Maroczy lost only once to John. The New World sensation, Marshall (+8 -3 +3), took third place laurels and 700 marks, a scant half point behind the two pacesetters. Schlechter and Bernstein divided the fourth and fifth prizes (400 marks) with identical scores of +7 -4 =4. The genial Wiener drew a blank with the first three place winners - surrendering games to Janowski, Maroczy and Marshall. He also uncharacteristically blundered away a Knight in loosing to his compatriot Berger. The plucky Graz veteran amassed four out of five points against the first five places(!) enroute to a surprise six-place finish. The young Bernstein, for his part enjoyed a magnificent start - leading through the ninth round before suffering successive setbacks to Marshall in the 10th and to Schlechter in the 11th. Russia's perennial champion, Tichigorin, was clearly in a period of decline although he managed a win and two draws against the first three place winners. Wolf, in dividing the seventh-tenth prizes with John, Leonhardt and Tchigorin, emerged as the tournament "Remis Koenig" with 10 draws in 15 games. In tournament "B" action first place fell to Fleischmann of Hungary with a score of 13 (+11 -2 +4) followed by Swiderski, 12 (+11 -4 =2) and W Cohn, 11 1/2 (+9 -3 =5). A major figure of the future, Nimzovich shared the 15th and 16th places - posting a disappointing score of 6 (+3 -8 +6). The secondary tournaments featured some coming stars. Rubenstein and Duras shared first and second prize in the Hauptturnier "A" (+11 -2 =2), with third and fourth places going to Vidmar (+11 -3 +1) and Lowy (+10 -2 =3). Shories defeated Tartakower in a playoff for Hauptturnier "B" laurels, (+2 -1 =1). Hauptturnier "C" honors fell to Szekely (+6 -1 =0), ahead of Biedendorf (+5 -2 =0).Condition:Previous owner's name to title, stamped to end papers and occasionally other pages. Corners bumped else a very good copy of one the scarcer tournament books.
