Autograph letter on a postal card to composer and conductor Curt Schindler, signed "Dr. Rich. Strauss."

Dated Marquartstein, Oberbaiern, July 2, 1905. In ink. In German (with translation). Strauss has received a printed copy of Oscar Wilde's play, Salome, from America. He urges Schindler to reassure a certain Dr. M. about some unfounded rumors from London, and asks him how much more a copyist, Rabbeis, has to write. "I have just received a very handsome printed copy of the French S[alome] from America... The London rumors are baseless; calm Dr. M!" Somewhat worn and creased; two small tears to edges. Less than two weeks before he penned this letter, Strauss had completed the full score of his opera, Salome, which he had adapted from Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of Oscar Wilde's eponymous play. (Indeed, his inquiries about [R.?] "Rabbeis," whose name appears on one of Arnold Schoenberg's lists of available copyists, may refer to the copying of orchestral scores or parts of the opera). As the present letter indicates, Strauss was very keen to obtain Wilde's original - if idiosyncratic - French text, from which he hoped to construct his own French-language version of the opera. With the help of Romain Rolland, he succeeded and, although his plans to stage it at the Opéra Comique in Paris never materialized, it was favorably received at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels on March 25, 1907; the highly successful premiere of the original German version had, of course, already taken place at the Dresden Hofoper on December 9, 1905. Kurt Schindler (1882-1935) was an American composer, conductor, and folksong collector of German birth.

Strand, Ejnar Hertzsprung, 1873-1967, Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific 80 (1968) pp.51-56. - FIRST EDITION and presentation copy of the very rare offprint with "Überreicht vom Verfasser" printed on front wrapper upper right. In 1905 Hertzsprung published the article "Zur Strahlung der Sterne", unfortunately in the - astronomical and academically - obscure journal "Zeitschrift für Wissenschaftliche Photographie, Photophysik und Photochemie" in which he positioned his observations and the results in tables, not in figures and diagrams. In his paper Zur Strahlung der Sterne (on the radiation of stars), "Hertzsprung showed, ?rst, that stars with very sharp absorption lines in Antonia Maury's classi?cation system were more luminous than others - a discovery that became the foundation of the method of stellar parallax - and, second, that stars could be classi?ed in two series, the main sequence (in modern parlance) and the high-luminosity giant stars when plotted in a diagram of intrinsic luminosity vs. temperature. Because of the appearance of these results in a photography journal, it had little impact in the astronomical community, and it was not until the same relationship had been discovered by Henry Norris Russell, several years later, that Hertzsprung's discoveries were recognized. The diagram became known as the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram." (K. van Berkel et al., The History of Science in the Netherlands, 1999, p.460). Hertzsprung's work on the radiation of stars was reprinted in Oswalds Klassiker der exakten Wissenschaften, Vol. 255. Very Good.

224 Original Watercolour Paintings, Rendering Scenes from Travels to Egypt, the West Indies, Australia, Europe and More.

1905. Watercolour views from around the world, 1905-1949, made by May Joscelyne who was connected to the family of Jasper Moon of Llanymynech. Each painting on a separate leaf of art paper, oone hundred and ninety-nine of which measure approximately 25 x 17 cm, and twenty-five being slightly smaller at approximately 17 x 12 cm (or in between the two sizes). Several are captioned and dated in manuscript by the artist to verso. Occasional tears to margins, otherwise in very good condition, lovely nostalgic views of the world in watercolour. From the estate sale of wealthy shipper Jasper Moon (1881-1975), of White Rock House, situated in hills half a mile from the village of Llanymynech which straddles the English and Welsh border. Jasper Moon's daughter Ursula (born 1912) married Peter Harry Joscelyne (died 1958), May Joscelyne therefore possibly being his mother or an aunt. Peter's father was Dr. F.P. Joscelyne of Cornwall, England, District Surgeon & Beaufort Estates Medical Officer. Little is known of the female artist May Joscelyne, apart from her connection to the Moon family, and that she died in 2012 at the notable age of 104. In the same year, the White Rock House and estate at Llanymynech was sold, including the present archive of her watercolours. May's art work reveals that she enjoyed the privileged available to the upper class, such as extensive around the world. The highlight of the lot are the paintings made in Egypt and the Sudan in 1923. At least 17 photographs are identified as being from Egypt; there may be more. These includes paintings of the Pyramids and Sphynx of Giza, White Nile scenes, views of Assouan (Aswan), the city of Cairo and its striking mosque minarets, a view of Luxor from the Nile with a felucca in the foreground, and the Red Sea. One image of three small pyramid tombs is captioned "Kassala Desert" which is in the Sudan, possibly depicting the Pyramids at Jebel Barkal in the Sudan. Travelling to the extremities of the African continent, in Morocco she paints the Koutoubia Mosque minaret tower of Marrakesh, in South Africa, Table Mountain, the vast plains and Iron Mountain [Yzerberg] in the Zoutspanberg district of Transavaal, White River, and Hermanus Island off of Cape Town. Seven or more paintings capture Hawaii's splendour back in 1937. Tranquil views include Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach, Cooper Island of the Palmyra Atoll, and Honolulu Harbour. Spectacular beaches of the West Indies are well represented as she memorializes her voyage to Montego Bay in Jamaica, to Haiti, and in Martinique 1935. A rocky coastal view is captioned 'Old Panama.' Vivid colours and tropical flora are accentuated in the exquisite gardens of the Matava Hotel in Fiji, visiting there in 1949. A voyage to Australia and New Zealand was made in 1939, as seen by the artistic views of the coastline between Brisbane and Sydney, and New Zealand's spectacular lakes Lake Rotorua, Wakatipu, and Wanaka (also known as Lake Pembroke). Not far away, May also visited Kuta Beach in Bali, which is depicted in at least two of her works. The farthest voyage made was to America. A soft-hued sunset painting is captioned 'Saint Lawrence River, Quebec.' Continental sojourns took the artist to Ronda and Malaga in Spain, along the coast of Portugal affording an island view off of Cascais, to Sorrento in Italy, to France where she paints the enchanting river valley scenes of Castéra-Bouzet in 1913 as well as the Palais des Papes in Avignon and views of Dieppe, and finally up to the famous North Sea coast of Noordwijk aan Zee in The Netherlands. (The earliest views in the lot are from Europe.) With posh retreats, English gardens and more beaches to explore at home in the UK, we find views of some of the Lochs of Scotland, Kilconquhar Castle in Fife, Wales Dolgelly, Harlech, Newquay, Pembroke, Windermere Lake in Cumbria, Ullswater, and Holywell. Perhaps the most charming European scene is that of a beach lined with carts known as a bathing machines. [Around the 1750s the four-wheeled carts came into use, normally rolled out to sea by a horse. Swimwear hadn't yet been invented yet and privacy was of utmost importance, for women most certainly. Equipped with a door on each side, and a roof-top flag to notify the driver that bathing was complete, the bathing machines remained in active use on English beaches until the 1890s, when they began to be parked on the beach and used as stationary changing rooms. When legal segregation of bathing areas in Britain ended in 1901 and swimwear became acceptable, the carts became stationery beach changing rooms. Most of them had disappeared altogether in the United Kingdom by 1914, and by the 1920s, they were almost entirely extinct, except for those used by the elderly.].

        The Pie and the Patty-Pan.

London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1905 - Quarto. Original blue boards, lettered in white on spine and front cover, front cover illustration in colour, lavender endpapers. Bookseller's price to verso head of front free endpaper, ink inscription on front free endpaper recto. Spine sunned, light staining; a very good copy. Colour frontispiece, 9 coloured plates, black and white illustrations in the text, all by the author. First edition, first impression. This was the last book Norman Warne worked on with Potter, and his proposal of marriage was sent during its creation. Potter completed the project alone; it was published two months after Warne's untimely death. It was the first of Potter's works to be published in a larger format. The illustrated endpapers, introduced the previous year, were forgotten for this work, Potter writing "I conclude there is no time to get an end-paper [sic] design done - unless Mr. Stokoe has already designed one - I do not mind one way or another" (Linder p. 172); the book appeared with plain or lavender endpapers. The later edition published in a smaller format, to match Potter's other works, was renamed The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan. Linder p. 172. [Attributes: First Edition]

224 Watercolour Paintings of Exquisite Foreign Scenes

Watercolour views from around the world, 1905-1949. Two hundred and twenty-four (224) original watercolour paintings, rendering scenes from travels to Egypt, the West Indies, Australia, Europe and more, made by May Joscelyne who was connected to the family of Jasper Moon of Llanymynech. Each painting on a separate leaf of art paper, one hundred and ninety-nine of which measure approximately 25 x 17 cm, and twenty-five being slightly smaller at approximately 17 x 12 cm (or in between the two sizes). Several are captioned and dated in manuscript by the artist to verso. Lovely nostalgic views of the world in watercolour. Most of them had disappeared altogether in the United Kingdom by 1914, and by the 1920s, they were almost entirely extinct, except for those used by the elderly.]

        The Pie and the Patty-Pan.

London: Frederick Warne and Co., , 1905. Quarto. Original blue boards, lettered in white on spine and front cover, front cover illustration in colour, lavender endpapers. Colour frontispiece, 9 coloured plates, black and white illustrations in the text, all by the author. Bookseller's price to verso head of front free endpaper, ink inscription on front free endpaper recto. Spine sunned, light staining; a very good copy.

        Doktor Glas.

Albert Bonniers 1905 - FIRST EDITION, a couple of light pencil marks, pp. [1v], 253, [2], foolscap 8vo, contemporary half calf with marbled boards, the backstrip lettered in gilt with three raised bands, extremities a little rubbed, marbling to edges with that to fore-and tail edges a little faint, patterned endpapers, good. A scarce first edition of the Swedish author's most important work, written in the form of a diary recording the eponymous physician's descent into despair - and within the larger themes of sex and death, dealing with abortion, euthanasia, adultery and suicide (all apt to cause the sort of scandal that the book provoked). The nature of the journal form allows for a subtle handling of the narrator's ennui and the book's complex moral issues, and the novel is both very much of its time in terms of the literary and philosophical influences on the narrative's presentation as well as predicting several of the tropes and preoccupations that would become staples of modernist practice. The first English edition appeared in 1963 with an introduction by William Sansom - the most recent edition replaced this with one by Margaret Atwood.

Zaiavlenie i Dokumenty o razryve tsentral'nykh uchrezhdenii s partiei [A statement and documents concerning the split between the Central committees and the party].

Geneva: Izdatel'stvo "Vpered"; Kooperativnaia tipografiia 1905 - Small octavo (17 × 11 cm). Original staple-stitched self-wrappers; 13, [1] pp. Printed on thin onion-skin paper. Publisher's ad for the journal "Vpered." Good or better; wrappers lightly soiled; old private library label and stamps of a Russian Workers' Library in Paris and private stamp of the collector Marcel Bekus. With an advertisement for the journal "Vpered" to the last page. First and only edition of Lenin's angry indictment of three members of the Social-Democratic Labor Party's Central Committee, Glebov-Avilov (1887-1937), Nikitin (1787-1918), and Valentin, for agitating against the planned Third Party Congress, as well as against Lenin himself. Lenin's pamphlet in effect widened the split between the Bolshevik and the Menshevik factions that had occurred at the Party's Second Congress in Summer 1903. Whatever spirit of collaboration had been left between its members was eliminated by Lenin's enumeration of offenses, and he went so far as to call for an arbitration tribunal to settle the matter. When the Third Congress was indeed held, it included only the Bolshevik faction, and the Mensheviks held a separate meeting in Geneva. As a result, the Party's organization as a small group of professional revolutionaries was confirmed, and the role of its Central Committee strengthened, further paving the way toward the eventual Bolshevik coup in 1917. A variant in light green printed wrappers was also issued. Item 757 in the Bernstein and Souvarine catalog, which notes that this pamphlet was "of great importance for the history of the development of the role of the Central Committee, which, at the 3rd Congress (London 1905) was made the sole directing center of the Party" (p. 129). This copy from the collection of Marcel Bekus (1888-1939), the Warsaw-born historian of socialism, who participated in the 1905 Revolution and owned a large collection of revolutionary literature.
