History of Osteopathy, and Twentieth-Century Medical Practice."

Cincinnati: Press of Jennings and Graham, 1905. Cincinnati: Press of Jennings and Graham, 1905. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition. No jacket. Hinges just starting, minor wear to corners. 1905 Hard Cover. xi, 428 pp. 8vo. Original brown cloth, gilt titles & rules. An early and important cornerstone in the literature of osteopathic medicine, published during the lifetime of Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), who founded the American School of Osteopathy just 13 years earlier. Though well-represented in institutional collections, it appears quite scarce in the trade, with only reissues currently available, and only one record of sale at auction in the last 30 years. From the preface: ""The compilation of the History of Osteopathy and Twentieth-Century Medical Practice was not undertaken because of a pressing demand. It seemed to have dawned upon the mind of several osteopaths about the same time that such a work ought to be issued during the life of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still and others most intimately connected with the origin and early development of the science. The author was requested by several of his professional friends to undertake the work, which he did with much reluctance. He felt that he had a great responsibility resting upon him. Once thoroughly entered upon the work, the magnitude of the task became evident; but the richness of the mine of truth in which he was delving, made the search one of constantly growing interest. Direct information was obtained from Dr. A. T. Still and from many who were intimate with him before Osteopathy was known and during its process of development. Many of the facts given are drawn from the authors personal knowledge; and others are from traditions or unwritten history which has become the common property of scores who are acquainted with the development of Osteopathy and of those who have known Dr. Still for years. The chapters relating to other systems of medicine and methods of procedure in treating diseases of the human body were not contemplated in the original plan. In order that Osteopathy might be seen in its true relations, and its independent position in the science and art of healing be fully understood, it seemed necessary to present a few facts concerning present medical practices. This was the more imperative because of the vilification and constant misrepresentation of Osteopathy by the established medical profession. It will require no stretch of the imagination to see that the facts at first sight apparently foreign to Osteopathy are an integral part of the history."""

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("R. Dehmel").

Hamburg, 7. XII. 1905.. 2 SS. Gr.-4to.. Briefkopf.

Eine neue Bestimmung der Moleküldimensionen [A New Determination of Molecular Dimensions]. WITH: Zur Theorie der Brownschen Bewegung [On the Theory of Brownian Motion]

Leipzig: Barth. Leipzig: Barth. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST APPEARANCE in a journal of Einstein's famous doctoral dissertation: "it has had more widespread practical applications than any other paper Einstein wrote" (Pais). WITH: Einstein's important sequel to his revolutionary paper on Brownian motion, "includes the discussion of rotary Brownian motion" (Pais). "It is not sufficiently realized that Einstein's thesis is one of his most fundamental papers. Histories and biographies invariably refer to 1905 as the miraculous year because of his articles on relativity, the light-quantum, and Brownian motion. In my opinion, the thesis is on a par with the Brownian motion article. In fact, in some--not all--respects, his results on Brownian motion are by-products of his thesis work. This goes a long way toward explaining why the paper on Brownian motion was received by the Annalen der Physik on May 11, 1905, only eleven days after the thesis had been completed. "Three weeks after the thesis was accepted, this same journal received a copy (without dedication) for publication. It was published only after Einstein supplied a brief addendum in January 1906... Quite apart from the fundamental nature of some results obtained in the thesis, there is another reason why this paper is of uncommon interest: it has had more widespread practical applications than any paper Einstein ever wrote" (Pais, Subtle is the Lord). IN: Annalen der Physik, Band 19, pp. 289-306; 371-381. Leipzig: Barth, 1906. Octavo, contemporary German morocco, marbled boards. Whole volume 19 offered (without general title page). Stamp ("Prof. R.W. Pohl / Göttingen) on page 1. Spine faded and a few scuffs to handsome contemporary binding; text and Einstein articles fine.

History of Osteopathy, and Twentieth-Century Medical Practice

From the preface: "The compilation of the History of Osteopathy and Twentieth-Century Medical Practice was not undertaken because of a pressing demand. It will require no stretch of the imagination to see that the facts at first sight apparently foreign to Osteopathy are an integral part of the history."

        La Case de L'Oncle Tom

Paris - Librairie Hachette, 1905. Paris - Librairie Hachette, 1905 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A French copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin translated from the original English by Louis Enault. Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War, according to Will Kaufman. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In the first year after it was published, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in the United States; one million copies were sold in Great Britain. The book and the plays it inspired helped popularise a number of stereotypes about black people. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have, to an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a vital antislavery tool. Condition: In a quarter calf leather binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Corners are bumped, and boards worn. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Hinges are weak. Pages are browned and age-toned with some staining to the end-papers. Overall: GOOD..

Chess in Iceland and in Icelandic Literature with Historical Notes on other Table-Games

The Florentine Typographical Society, Florence 1905 - ix+400 pages with frontispiece, one illustration and diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. (Betts: 6-33) First edition. Also published in New York, Stechart, 1915. Includes an account of chess in Iceland (chapters: Polar chess, Chess in the sagas, The story of Frithiof) whence it came from England in the 12th century, and it developed peculiarities in rule and nomenclature which existed until the 19th century. Only part (about on-seventh) of the book concerns chess, the remainder ("Stray notes") deals with the Europeans history of a group of other games: draughts, fox and geese, tables, merelles, or the morris game, etc. Fiske was born on November 11, 1831 in Ellisburg, New York. He attended Cazenovia Seminary, New York and Hamilton college in Clinton, New York. During his sophomore year, he left Hamilton to study Scandinavian languages in Europe, supporting himself as a correspondent for the New York Tribune. He spent his last two years in the Uppsala University in Sweden, also supporting himself by teaching English. In 1852, he returned to the U.S. and took a job as a librarian at the Astor Library in N.Y. During his stay at Astor Library, Fiske began his personal library containing a collection of Icelandic books which would become the largest in America as well as other topics such as Persian texts and philological works. Fiske, an avid chess player, was approached by Hardman Phillips Montgomery, a former postmaster of Philadelphia, about staging a contest between the three best chess players in the U. S. Fiske liked the idea, but not known for thinking small and quite aware of the importance of the London International Tournament in 1851, he proposed instead a National Tournament at which players from all over the country could meet and test themselves, but also at which the leading chess players could establish an organization to promote and encourage chess in America as well as establish standard rules of play. And so through Fiske the 1st American Chess Congress was conceived. Through the Congress, he met and became a close friend to the chess prodigy, Paul Morphy. Afterwards he wrote what most chess scholars consider one of the finest tournament books, the Book of the American Chess Congress. For the next few years, he edited the American Chess Monthly, with Paul Morphy listed as nominal co-editor. When Fiske failed to receive an expected promotion at the Astor Library in 1859, he resigned and took a position as secretary of the American Geographical Society where he remained until 1861 when he was attached to the American Legation to Vienna, serving under John Lothrop Motley. Returning to the U.S. in 1864, he was made editor of the Syracuse Daily Journal until 1866, followed by that of the Hartford Courant. In 1868 Fiske traveled to Egypt and Palestine, acting as a correspondent for several newspapers and upon his return in January of 1869 accepted the position as Professor of Northern European Languages and as Head Librarian for the new Cornell University. Fiske held these positions until his resignation in 1883. In 1879 Fiske visited Iceland for his first and only time. He edited the first Icelandic Chess Magazine in 1901 (published in Venice) and donated thousands of chess books to the Icelandic libraries. In 1905 Fiske's famous book, Chess in Iceland and in Icelandic Literature was published posthumously.Condition: Spine ends rubbed and bumped, corners bumped and gently rubbed else a very good copy.
