REPORT ON A PLAN FOR SAN FRANCISCO: Presented to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors by the Association for the Improvement of San Francisco

San Francisco: Published by the City, 1905. San Francisco: Published by the City, 1905. First edition. Hardcover. Light scuffing to covers, gilt dulled, else very good. Original red cloth, quarto, [2], 8, 35-211, [1], [7 index] pp. Illustrated with many plates, mostly from photographs, including 18 folding plates of plans, panoramas, birds-eye views, etc.; 3 large folding maps. First Edition. Daniel H. Burnham (1946-1912), American architect and urban planner, designer of New York's Flat-Iron building, Chicago's Masonic Temple building, Washington, D. C.s Union Station, the Merchants Exchange Building on California St. in San Francisco, and overseer of design and construction of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. In 1904, Burnham was commissioned by The Association for the Improvement and Adornment of San Francisco "to direct and execute a practical and comprehensive plan for the improvement and adornment of the city, similar to the plans prepared under his direction for Washington, Cleveland, Chicago and Manila." (from the preface). Burnham proposal was elaborate and far-reaching, intended to be accomplished in steps over a period of 50 years. The plan included designs for playgrounds, parks, streets, boulevards, public grounds, etc. Burnham decried San Francisco's rectilinear street system "laid out at right angles and with little regard for grades and other physical difficulties" and proposed "girdling the city with a boulevard" in emulation of Paris. Burnham's vision was not universally accepted and initial approval unraveled due to the enormous cost and perceived impracticability of implementation. The April, 1906 earthquake and fire, which should have offered an obvious opportunity to proceed, did nothing to further the project. By 1909 the whole thing was abandoned. This copy inscribed by James D. Phelan - former San Francisco mayor (1896-1901), US senator, and President and founding member of The Association for the Improvement and Adornment of San Francisco - on front free endpaper: "L. H. Wiegel, May 1913 from Jas. D. Phelan.
