Manuscript Journal of Drawings and Classification Notes - Ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian Pottery - Illustrated and Described

1905. Germany, circa 1905-1907. "Pher-Aegypten II." Manuscript journal of Hans Dragendorff, archaeologist and founder of ancient Roman pottery classification, comprising of drawings and descriptions of this subject matter, further examining examples found in ancient Egyptian necropolises, including notes on Thutmose III, whose tomb had been recently discovered by Howard Carter. 8vo. 78 pages, numbered in manuscript and signed in the original by the author to front endpaper. Original brown cloth boards, marbled endpapers with endpocket, and pencil sleeves. Very good condition, a pleasing and unusual detailed volume. A fascinating compendium of Dragendorff's ongoing work which formed his legacy as an authoritative figure in classification of ancient pottery, this volume holds his original working notes and pencil drawings relating to the foundational system in the field of archaeology. It features pottery, bronzes, and the introduction of glass, primarily Egyptian examples, several of which were excavated from the graves of Amenhotep II, Ramesses III, and Thutmose III, the latter of which had just been discovered by Howard Carter. He also examines and refers to the wares of the Roman and Greek Empires, and their connections to Egypt. Hans Dragendorff, classical archaeologist, scholar, and expert on antiquities, examines the site of Giza over five pages. At least two pages examine terracotta objects from the nineteenth dynasty of Egypt in the New Kingdom, here jotting some classification numbers. A section of four pages is headed "Die lackiert tongefäße" [the painted pottery] and illustrates the Egyptian art. A sarcophagus and some frescos are described. Four pages deal with Greek antiquities, at least one example illustrating Greek presence in Alexandria, Egypt, and later in the volume, page 67 is headed 'Alexandria" in Upper Egypt, where Coptic tradition enters the archaeologist's study. Pages 44-53 illustrates and examines glass jars found in a room or chamber he numbers 43, possibly a display at the Egyptian Museum of Cairo, which contained all the funerary equipment from the tomb of Yuea and Thuya (the maternal grandparents of Akhenaton, also known as Amenhotep IV. Within this section, he mentions Naqada, an important town on the west bank of the Nile, from where such a substantial quantity of remains were found, which enabled the dating of the entire culture, throughout Egypt and surrounding environs. Several of these drawings are numbered, or classified by the author. Over seven pages the author makes notes on "relief kannen" or relief jugs, highlighting different techniques and designs of reliefs, and how they evolved. Three pages are devoted to Romanische Blauglasiert [Roman Blue Glazed Vessels]. Throughout the volume further examples include vases composed of alabaster and bronze, some of which are held by an Arabic Museum, possibly in Cairo. interestingly, he makes notes on a statue of Aphrodite, and the Rosetta Stone is mentioned on page 54. "Sammlung Newberry" or the Newberry Collection of Egyptian artefacts appears on two pages. [Egyptologist Percy E. Newberry (1869-1949) held an administrative position for the Egypt Exploration Society from 1884 to 1886 before pursuing his own research expeditions. He started his archaeological work in Egypt in 1890, leading the excavation of Beni Hasan and El-Bersheh until 1894. For this dig, in 1891 Newberry appointed none other than Howard Carter as a trainee tracer, after recognising his artistic talent. Newberry later served on the Tutankhamun (King Tut) excavation team for several seasons in 1922-23. His speciality was the botanical specimens from the tomb, on which he would briefly report in the second volume of Carter's 'The Tomb of Tut.ankh.Amen'. A careful collector, Newberry gathered textiles, pottery, bronzes, botanical seeds, etc.].

1905. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. In: The Strand Magazine, Vols XXVI, XXVII & XXVIII [3 volumes]. London: George Newnes, 1903-1904. Original light blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. First English Appearances of these thirteen further adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle had killed off Holmes at Reichenbach Falls in 1893 (in "The Final Problem"), and for a decade resisted everyone's pleas to bring him back (THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, published in 1902, was written as a "posthumous memoir," and thus avoided Holmes's resurrection). However, in 1903 Doyle could not resist Collier's Magazine's offer from America of $45,000 for thirteen tales -- replying on a postcard simply "Very well. A.C.D.". Thus the first of these cases, "The Adventure of the Empty House," published in Collier's in September 1903 and in The Strand a month later, officially brought Holmes back from the supposed dead. Also included in this collection are some of the best-loved Holmes adventures, such as those of "The Dancing Men," "The Solitary Cyclist," "The Six Napoleons," "The Abbey Grange" and "The Second Stain."~The thirteen cases, each with a full-page frontispiece and several smaller illustrations by Sidney Paget, appeared monthly in The Strand issues of October 1903 through September 1904 plus the last in December 1904 (these three six-month volumes contain the monthly issues July 1903 through December 1904). They then were published in book form in 1905 -- by McClure Phillips in February and by George Newnes (of The Strand) in March.~The three volumes are in near-fine condition: the spines are slightly darkened but there is very little external soil or wear, and remarkably the original endpapers of these hefty volumes remain intact. They went on numerous trips together, including a 1907 cruise on their yacht ?Snark? to Hawaii and Australia. Photographer Anne Wardrope Brigman (1869-1950) married a sea captain in 1894 and accompanied her husband on several voyages to the South Seas. Brigman stopped traveling with her husband after 1900 and became active in the growing bohemian community of the San Francisco Bay area, becoming close friends with Jack and Charmian London. Brigman began photographing in 1902. From the J. Paul Getty Museum: ?Brigman was one of two original California members of the art photography group the Photo-Secession, founded by Alfred Stieglitz, and she was the only Western photographer to be made a Fellow of the group.? (2) Photograph with handwritten caption on verso by Charmian London: ?Jack?s bedside / table. / 1916.? Black and white, 4.75? x 3.75?. Affixed to a 5? x 4? card captioned in ink beneath image: ?Jack London?s Bedside Table ?" 1916.? A 3.5? x 1.25? portion of the mounting card has been cut out on verso revealing Mrs. London?s caption. Jack London?s ?Bedside Table? was on the sun-porch of a cottage in his ranch in Glen Ellen, California. He had purchased the 1,000 acre ranch on the eastern slope of Sonoma Mountain in 1905. London died November 22, 1916, the year of this photograph as identified by his wife, in a sleeping porch in a cottage on his ranch."

Las Guerras con las Tribus Yaqui y Mayo del Estado de Sonora

Mexico City: Tipografia del Departamento de Estado Mayor, 1905 342+ix with fold out map. Large Quarto (13" x 8 1/4") issued in original wrappers. First edition. There is an abundance of documentation concerning the history of indigenous populations of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. These documents were constructed from information about the groups with whom the Spaniards had the most contact and focus on the life and governance of these groups. In comparison, relatively little is known of the hunters and gatherers that for most of the colonial period occupied a marginal position relative to the central political scheme. These peoples, located in the arid part of America, were relegated to colonization by religious missionary orders. The Spanish colonization machine with its array of bureaucrats and administrators was first established in the Mesoamerican region because of its geo-political importance as a central area for decision-making and development of the colonial society. What is commonly known as the Aztec Empire consisted of 38 provinces which paid tribute, and the Empire was, in reality, a rather loose confederation of city-states with different political systems and situations. This confederation of city-states encompassed many different ethnic groups and a diverse array of languages. The cities in the central region consisted of primarily Nahuatl and Otomi speaking populations. To the northeast were the Huastecos, Totonacas, and Mazatecos. To the southeast the Mixtecos, Zapotecos. To the south the Mayas. To the southeast the Tlapanecas and Cuitlatecas. To the west the Mazahuas and the Matlazincas. The consolidation of this confederation of cities and settlements by the Mexicans who exercised their hegemony over these varied peoples, created a class of leaders of which the Tlatoani or Supreme Lord, warriors, and functionaries were a part; a class of businessmen and traders, the pochtecas, who, at the time of the colonization, were beginning to enjoy increasing importance and privilege. The campesinos (or countrymen), whether Nahuatl, Zapotec, or Mixtec, continued their life at the margin of these city-states in their apogee. The campesinos or macehualtzin were all members of a community, with usufruct rights to the land where they established their home and an agricultural plot. The territorial space was called the calpulli or what we now know as indigenous communal area or settlement. This calpulli was characterized by a sociopolitical organization based on a definition of territory, barrio or sometimes kinship. The Spanish colonization produced a phenomenon that on one hand tended to blur the cultural differences of the ethnic groups, while on the other contributing to the persistence of the same groups. These managed to retain their own identities yet with a colonial overlay that gave them an identity imposed by the colonizer (religious, or subjects to the king, mine of hacienda workers. etc.). With independence the indigenous peoples acquired the same liberties and rights as other segments of the population. Nevertheless, in many cases they were still subject to special laws and rules that kept them in a marginal and inferior situation relative to the white mestizo population. With the expansion of the agricultural and livestock frontier, and the development of capitalist relations of production in the field (salaried labor, production of commercial crops, capital investments in agrarian property, and the growth of infrastructure in the rural areas) the indigenous populations suffered a massive despoiling and appropriation of their territories, and many of them were exiled or resettled in less hospitable areas. This was the origin of the emergence of the great latifundios and haciendas, that established themselves in the territories belonging to the indigenous people and in which the indigenous populations were incorporated in systems of servants or clientage (peones acacillados). The exploitation of indigenous labor and the takeover of their lands generated conflict which erupted in the caste wars such as the Yaqui War in Sonora, or the Caste War in Yucatan in the Nineteenth Century, and which eventually culminated in the Revolution of 1910. Francisco del Paso y Troncoso has gathered the documentation starting in the colonial period in 1529 to 1902 to present the history of these wars of the Yaqui and Maya.Condition:spine taped and ends chipped, corners chipped, detached from spine, pages age darkened else a good copy of a very scarce title.

"Queensland in a Bathing Machine"; Victorian die-cut card

England:. ca. 1905.. Very good condition. Die-cut Queensland greeting card in the shape of a bathing machine, illustrated with a young woman peeking out of the door in her striped bathing costume. The "bathing machine" was a rolling wooden cart with doors at each end which allowed women bathers to change into their bathing suits without having to be seen walking across the beach, as the machines were towed in to the water by horse. The lady bather, thus modestly hidden from male view as she swam, would signal that she was ready to have the wagon pulled back in by raising a small flag on the roof of the bathing machine! Gender segregation at beaches in England did not end until 1901; by the 1920s only the elderly were still using the bathing machines. Inside the card is a folding sheet of Queensland photographic views, including: North Coast line; Spring Bluff Station, Toowoomba; Clearing Forest Timber; Canefield, Nth Coast Ry; Minto Crag; Caboolture Bridge; Cattle at Grand Chester; Old Water Wheel, Mt. Tambourine; Ruthven St., Toowoomba; Surprise Creek Cairns Ry; Wallangara Station Border of NSW; and Bourbong St. Bundaberg. The die cut card illustrated on both sides with the bathing machine, and with an attached gift label, from "Auntie and Uncle to Gladys, wishing you a Happy New Year". Printed in England, Reg. Design 534826. Card measures 4 x 3", with folding views sheet 3 x 14".
