Watercolor Album of European Views

      - N.d., 1905-1932. 43 leaves, with 86 watercolors of different views from England, France, Italy, the Lowlands, Switzerland, all done by a very accomplished hand during the first third of the 20th century. The views of both panoramic and close-up, natural scenery and architectural, with bridges, castles, cottages aplenty. The artist was concerned with capturing the beautiful and rendering it so -- this was not the effort of a modernist cynic wallowing in irony, the sordid, the underside of things -- and so there is a dream-like quality to the art. That all was done by one artist contributes to the satisfying cohesion of the album. The images might not individually be particular original in their treatment, but that doesn't negate the sensual, sensate appeal of them, and the effort that each image represented speaks to a level of appreciation for sights that is impossible to achieve in our era of commodified tourism. This kind of album is an affirmation of the rewards to be garnered on the Grand Tour of Yore. The pictures are not signed other than a handful with the initials "KP" and dated from 1905 to 1932. There can be no question that they are all by the same hand, and that KP probably had it in mind to create a cohesive album like this. The album itself is strictly utilitarian in its design, with screws used to bind the leaves together, and the boards covered with an office log leatherette which is now rubbed and worn. The leaves are of a near card stiffness, though, which is well-suited for the mounting of the watercolors thereon. The oblong album measures 26 by 21 cm, 10 by 8.5 inches, and the watercolors are of varying size but typically cover a little more than half the surface.

9 eigenh. Briefe mit U. und 2 eh. Postkarten mit U.

Kopenhagen bzw. o. O., 31. Januar 1905 bis 10. September 1909.. 20½ SS. Quartal, S. 155-163). I. 3.

. Röfo Erg., 11. - (Archiv und Atlas der norm. u. path. Anatomie in typischen Röntgenbildern. Hrsg. von Albers-Schönberg). - Hamburg, Lucas Gräfe & Sillem, 1905, 4°, 6 orig. photograph. Tafeln, 6 Skizzenblätter, 30 Abb., OHLnBd.. Artur Schüller was born in Brünn, Czechoslovakia, when Gregor (Johann) Mendel (1822-1884) was still experimenting with plants in the garden of the Augustinian monastery Königskloster in the town. His father was a specialist in otolaryngology, and a friend of Adam Politzer (1835-1920). He was outstanding at school, especially in the humanities and music, and he entered medicine in Vienna aged 17. He graduated M.D. in 1899 with the highest honours, being awarded a prize by Franz Joseph at a special audience, which had only been given twice during the emperor's 60 year reign. He subsequently worked at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus and the psychiatric clinic. He was habilitated for neurology and psychiatry at Vienna in 1907, becoming titular ausserordentlicher professor in 1914. - Guido Holzknecht (1872-1931) invited him to join his X-ray department and rapidly he fulfilled the promise of his undergraduate days by his careful analysis of X-ray examinations of the skull, which set out fundamental principles still forming the basis of this examination. In 1910 Schüller performed experiments on dogs that suggested the practicality of cordotomy for pain relief. He also suggested the transphenoidal nasal approach for pituitary operations. In 1909, aged 35, he was appointed university professor in Vienna, where his colleagues were his former teachers Theodor Billroth (1829-1894), Carl Wilhelm Hermann Nothnagel (1841-1905), Hans Finsterer (1877-1955), Adam Politzer, Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902) and Julius Wagner Jauregg (1857-1940). - When World War I came Schüller did much medical work for the army, and wrote a paper describing a patient with Hand-Schüller disease in 1915. Following the war, Vienna changed from a city of prosperity to one of poverty and in the hyperinflation that followed he found great difficulty in making ends meet. In order to eke out a living, he undertook postgraduate classes in private on X-ray diagnosis of disorders of the skull, ear, nose, and throat and made a collection of almost every disorder known of the skull, which unfortunately was lost when he left Vienna. He wrote over 300 papers, monographs and books, and in one described the disorder osteoporosis circumscripta cranii, which is an early stage of Paget's disease of the skull and may be detected before any symptomatology. - With the rise of Hitler, Schüller left Vienna hurriedly in 1938, leaving most of his possessions behind. His two sons were prevented at the last moment from leaving. After a short time in England he went to Australia where, at the age of 65, he commenced to build up a career. He worked in the X-ray department of St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, where Dr. John O'Sullivan, who had been a pupil of his in Vienna, was an associate. He was much sought after as an X-ray consultant and received X-rays from all over the country for his opinion. During the latter years he was troubled by depression and developed Parkinson's disease. His two sons died in a concentration camp. -cf whonamedit

The expedition made the first in-depth exploration of Antarctica, and was of great importance to expeditions which followed. The first edition is scarce: reportedly only 1000 copies were printed.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Photo Negatives - Mining in Mexico - Guggenheim

Mexico 1905 - Mexico, circa 1905-1910. Set of 36 original panorama format photographic negatives, being views of at least five profitable mines in central Mexico, mainly in the states of San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas. Negatives measure approximately 31 x 9 cm. Together with 3 black and white photographs, corresponding with negatives from the collection. A scant few negatives chipped at corners, otherwise in very good condition with crisp images. The lot housed in a green paper folder for protection. Panoramic views are scarce in any condition, the negatives even more so. These being substantial in number, and in such remarkable condition, make for an exceptionally pleasing acquisition. A fascinating visual archive of Guggenheim mining and smelting operations in Mexico, holdings which contributed substantially to the silver and lead empire's wealth. Manuscript captions imbedded in the negatives serve to identify specific mines as follows: Charcas seen in 18 views, Bonanza in 3, Mala Noche in 1, Asientos in 2, Veta Grande in 2, leaving 10 views from one or more locales unnamed. Most, possibly all, of these mines were discovered and their ores worked as early as the sixteenth century. Either abandoned or used minimally, they would now be revived and modernized with great ambition, at least until the Mexican Revolution when most mining operations were halted. The mines shown in these panorama photographic negatives include the following: • The Charcas mines in the municipality of San Luis Potosí, central Mexico, an area rich in minerals and oil, containing substantial deposits of sulphides of silver, lead, copper and zinc. Charcas went through constant rise and fall in economy of the centuries, directly related to historic conflicts which occurred in the area. In 1862 with the aid of aviaton companies, the mines were modernized and re-established. In 1911, the National Metallurgical Company and the American Smelting and Refining Company acquired the mining rights of the company Minera Tiro General, which had been founded some years before. In 1924 it changed hands once again to become the Conpañia Minera Asarco S.A., which built a concentrator that started operating in 1925. The town of Charcas benefited greatly with the arrivals of telephone and electricity, the installation of which was paid for by these mining companies. • The Veta Grande Mine, in Zacatecas, north-central Mexico, a classic epithermal silver-gold (low sulphide) deposit. The state of Zacatecas is reputed for its rich deposits of silver and other minerals, its colonial architecture and its importance during the Mexican revolution. Much of the state’s colonial history has been related to its mineral production, especially of silver. In colonial times, only the richest portions of the oxidized veins were mined, however, later sulphide mineralization was also exploited. Metal distribution in the veins varies, however the Veta Grande system is predominately silver bearing with gold and base metals. The City of Zacatecas was first settled by the Spanish in the early 1500's after the discovery of these substantial silver veins. By 1588, large quantities of silver were being shipped from this region to Spain. With increased production, by 1877 silver from the Zacatecas Silver District accounted for 60 percent of the value of all Mexican exports, making it one of Mexico's wealthiest and largest cities of the era. Presently, silver production in Zacatecas state is the primary contributor for Mexico's status as the world's largest producer of silver, accounting for 17% of the world's output. • Bonanza - an important mine in the municipality of Mazapil, also in the state of Zacatecas. Originally established circa 1582-85 by Francisco de Urdinola, M. Guggenheim Sons in 1902/1903 "quietly acquired" the mining operation, known as the Bonanza y Anexas. Licenciado Emeterio de la Garza, a member of president Díaz’s inner circle, represented the Guggenheims. Acting for Guggenheim Exploration, it
