        The Selkirk Range

Ottawa: Government Printing Bureau,, 1905. 2 volumes, text volume and map-case, octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to spine and to the upper board, together with the Canadian arms. Portrait frontispiece and 94 plates, numerous illustrations to the text, map-case with 12 folding maps and 2 folding panoramas. A little rubbed, some chipping to head and tail of spine of text volume, map-case slightly crushed with creases to the edges, panorama 13 torn, without loss, and repaired, a very good set. First edition. Wheeler was born in Kilkenny, and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1876. He served an apprenticeship as a Dominion Land Surveyor with Rvley and Hamilton, and with Elihu Stewart in Collingwood, spending his first year in Canada surveying the Bruce Mines area of Ontario with Ryley and Hamilton, before joining Stewart in carrying out Indian Reserve surveys in Canada's new west. The present work is based on a photo-topographical survey of the Selkirk Range carried out in 1901-2, concentrating particularly on areas utilized by tourists and mountain climbers. In 1906, inspired by his mountain surveys, Wheeler founded the Alpine Club of Canada, he was the club's first President from 1906-10, editing the Canadian Alpine Journal from 1907 to 1930, he then served as managing director until 1926 when he retired and was elected Honorary President, continuing in that office until his death in 1945. He was the driving force behind two of the Club's most successful expeditions, the 1913 Mount Robson camp and the 1925 ascent of Mount Logan.

1905 - (TEXTILES - DYEING). THE THIOGENE COLOURS OF FARBWERKE VORM. MEISTER LUCIUS & BRUNING, HOECHST ON MAIN. ACCORDING TO THE STATE OF THE INDUSTRY IN 1904. New York: H. A. Metz & Co., (1905). Frontispiece of the factory complex in Germany, line illustrations of manufacturing apparatus in the text, and hundreds of swatches of dyed cloths, large and small, in a wide spectrum of colors and patterns. vi,162 pp. Text is in English. 4to., light green cloth sides, gilt title to upper board, publisher's information to lower board, patterned endpapers. Although the backstrip is lacking, the boards are firmly attached. Most leaves have some light dust-soiling at margins and the boards are bowed because the number of mounted samples keeps the individual leaves and the entire volume from closing tightly. A trade catalogue of Thiogene Colors, a subset of the Sulpher Color group, which allowed the direct dyeing of dyestuffs in a greater variety of colors, excepting red, than was formerly possible. The work is divided into two parts; one part deals with the application of Thiogene Colors, and the other describes in detail the various modes of application and the properties of individual colors in the series.

The Well of the Saints. A Play in Three Acts.

sp;- London - A. H. Bullen - Dublin - The Abbey Theatre 1905 - A handsomely rebound copy of Synge's play, with original pictorial paper wraps bound in. The Well of the Saints is a three-act play written by Irish playwright J. M. Synge, first performed at the Abbey Theatre by the Irish National Theatre Society in February, 1905. It is set in the rural east of Ireland two or more centuries ago. First edition. Edmund John Millington Synge (16 April 1871- 24 March 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, prose writer, travel writer and collector of folklore. He was a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival and was one of the co-founders of the Abbey Theatre. He is best known for his play The Playboy of the Western World, which caused riots in Dublin during its opening run at the Abbey Theatre. Although he came from an Anglo-Irish background, Synge's writings are mainly concerned with the world of the Roman Catholic peasants of rural Ireland and with what he saw as the essential paganism of their world view. This play is volume one of 'The Abbey Theatre Series'. The Abbey Theatre, also known as the National Theatre of Ireland, is a theatre located in Dublin, Ireland. The Abbey first opened its doors to the public on 27 December 1904. Despite losing its original building to a fire in 1951, it has remained active to the present day. Synge's plays helped set the Abbey house style for the following four decades. The stylised realism of his writing was reflected in the training given at the theatre's school of acting, and plays of peasant life were the main staple of the repertoire until the end of the 1950s. Bound by Greuzevault, with binder's stamp to front pastedown. Condition: In an armorial full morocco binding with original paper wraps bound in. Externally, in a excellent condition with only very slight marks to rear boards and some staining to rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with the odd spot and handling mark to pages. Overall: NEAR FINE [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Life of Lieut.-General The Hon. Sir Andrew Clarke GCMG, CB, CIE

London: John Murray,, 1905. Colonel-Commandant of Royal Engineers, Agent-General of Victoria, Australia. With a Preface by Colonel Sir G.S. Clarke. Octavo. Original plum diapered cloth, title gilt to spine and upper board, blind panels to the boards. With the dust jacket. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and 2 others similar, 8 half-tone plates, 2 folding coloured maps at the rear. Cloth slightly spotted, light toning, mild foxing to the fore edge, else very good with the torn, but complete, repaired jacket. First edition, uncommon. Commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1844, Clarke spent most of his career in civil employment, beginning with surveying and wharf building in Tasmania and road-building in New Zealand. He became surveyor-general of Victoria in 1853; his proposals for a government-controlled railway system were made law in 1857; and he was also responsible for the setting up of the first electric telegraph from Melbourne to Williamstown, Victoria, which by 1857 had reached the borders of New South Wales and South Australia. He was subsequently sent out to quell unrest on the Gold Coast, before becoming director of engineering works at the Admiralty, 1864-73. His most notable achievements were as governor of the Straits Settlements: "He arrived at Singapore on 4 November 1873, and soon he succeeded in reducing the rampant piracy and imposing some control over the local Chinese secret societies. He was also successful in ensuring that the native sultans of Perak and Selangor were persuaded to accept British 'advisers', as was the practice in India, while at the same time cultivating the friendship of the neighbouring maharaja of Johore … overall Clarke helped to maintain the peace and stability of the peninsula and pave the way for its future prosperity" (ODNB).

He was known as "The Dean of the Santa Fe Art Colony," and was commissioned for both commercial and consumer pieces, including a portrait of Calamity Jane that hung in the Billings Club until it was destroyed in a fire.

        More Than A Prophet.

W B Conkey Company, Chicago, Copyright 1905. - Black cloth hardcover with bright gilt lettering of title and author on front plus a cross, same on spine plus the Conkey name at bottom, with spine gilt a little worn but still bright. The pages measure 5 inches by 7 1/2 inches, 180 pp, signed by Douglas on second free endpaper as Lloyd C Douglas. The binding has some general wear at spine ends with folds, top corner tips worn through, some spotting here and there but not prominent. General appearance is very good. Inside there is a small oil spot in uper right corner on front free endpaper, but author's signature page which comes next is not affected. There is a little foxing of pages here and there, but sharp, tight, evidently carefully kept. Douglas was married in 1904, and in 1905 was pastor of a church. My research shows that he paid to have this book, his first, published. I have been unable to locate any others. This is a collection of religious essays, and the book is divided into four parts, with each individual part having 2, 10, 8, and 2 chapters respectively. In his later years he went on to publish Magnificent Obsession and The Robe, among many others, and this small book gives a good example of his elegant use of language and clarity of thought even as a young man in his twenties. He took the title of the seventh chapter of Part 3, More Than A Prophet, for the book title. The content page lists the following: Part I; At the Altar of Incense, In the Arbor. Part II: Innocence in Peril, Victorious Rereat, The Mystic Message, The Claim of Conscience, The Throne of Treachery, The Penitent, An Irrestible Leader, The Deserted Gate, The Shadow of the Symbol, An Unarmed Herald. Part III: The Nazarite, The Jeshimon, From All Judea, The Honor of the Jordan, The Spy, In Kings' Palaces, More Than a Prophet, Released. Part IV: A Vision of Calvary, Reclaimed.         Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie

Leipzig: Deuticke, 1905 Original printed wrappers preserved in a clamshell box.. An excellent copy with the back strip redone. First edition of the work which Freud himself considered second in importance only to his Die Traumdeutung. Freud introduces here his epochal theory of infantile sexuality, which linked the forces motivating the development of body and mind from earliest infancy, a contribution of utmost value. Infantile sexuality was a fact known, Freud said, to every nursemaid, yet the Three essays provoked (and still provokes) considerable controversy in both scientific and popular sectors. The importance of the Three essays to Freud is underscored by the fact that it was the only book besides The interpretation of dreams that he submitted to constant revision, with six editions published in his lifetime.&

Autograph Letter, Signed ("Edwin Markham", with a flourish and spatter), to journalist Alfred Henry Lewis, concerning praise of Markham's poem Virigilia, published in the Cosmopolitan for August 1905

52 Washington Pl., New York, 2 august 1905. 12mo. 1 page pen and ink on a folded sheet. Fine . Markham's love poem "Virgilia", published in the Cosmopolitan magazine for August 1905, filled the letter columns of New York literary papers with praise and disdain. Markham writes Lewis, a prolific author and frequent contributor to the magazine, "It is reward indeed to be praised by your dauntless pen. My 'Virgilia' pleases you, that is enough. The noise of the ant-hills will not disturb me, now that the mountain has spoken." "emphasis on changes in literary forms and their movement away from social commentary and political topics made much of what distinguished Markham's verse dated. He gradually fell from critical favor, and his reputation never fully recovered. Nevertheless, despite the critics' increasing disenchantment with him, Markham remained an important public figure, traveling across the nation and receiving warm praise nearly everywhere he went" - ANB

New York: McClure, Phillips & Co.,, 1905. Octavo. Original red vertical grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover decorated in blind; in the supplied dust jacket. In a red morocco-backed folding case. With Pyle's illustrated bookplate on the front pastedown, and that of collector F. B. Adams, Jr. on the verso of the front free endpaper. Edge of front pastedown scraped, else a fine copy in a very good dust jacket with some chips, tears, and soiling. First edition, first printing, of the author's first prose work; presentation copy, inscribed to the great American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle: "Will Mr. Howard Pyle accept through me the love of seven big and little children to whom he taught the beauty of language and of line, and to whom, in a desert place, he sent the precious message of Romance. Willa Sibert Cather, April 26, 1906." The "seven big and little children" referred to are Cather, her five siblings, and their live-in cousin, as well as the seven short stories in the book; the "desert place" was Nebraska; the "precious message of Romance" was provided by Howard Pyle's illustrated writings, which were favourites of children in Willa Cather's generation. Cather took up the post of managing editor for McClure's Magazine, where several of these short stories had first been published, around the time of this inscription, and where Pyle was art editor from 1905, though he resigned the position the following year, apparently finding the office atmosphere too hectic.
