Issued as "Gowans International Library Number 1." The first separate book publication of this famous supernatural tale. It was first published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1859 and first appeared in book form in TALES FROM BLACKWOOD [FIRST SERIES], Volume X (n.d. 1860). The Gowans text is the long version of the story, which is usually reprinted in its short form as "The House and the Brain." The shorter version, revised and cut by Bulwer-Lytton (perhaps because he wished to use his theory of the supernatural at greater length in his novel A STRANGE STORY [1861]), "lacks both coherence and conclusion. The fuller version is both a wonderful ghost story and a well-wrought example of Bulwer-Lytton's theory of the supernatural... Bulwer Lytton's story developed from his study of spiritualism, which he had begun six years earlier, and of mesmerism, which he had undertaken thirteen years before that. Thus, 'The Haunted and the Haunters' represents nearly twenty years' study of paranormal phenomena... On the one hand, it is a chilling tale of ghosts and terror; on the other, Bulwer-Lytton's main purpose in telling the story was to illustrate his theory 'that the Supernatural is Impossible, and that what is called supernatural is only a something in the laws of nature of which we have been hitherto ignorant.' Illustrated with a total of 138 reproductions of bindings and related materials in black and white, monochrome, and a number of stunning color plates apparently printed by intaglio. Also with one tipped-in leaf and numerous text vignettes. A history of the subject by the well-known French binder and scholar Gruel, with biographical notes on numerous binders and examples of bindings dating from the eleventh through the eighteenth century. In contemporary quarter blue morocco and marbled boards, with the original color-decorated wrappers bound in. Books are not uniform in size, volume I being slightly larger than volume II. Hinges of both volumes worn and split at spine ends, small amount of chipping and rubbing to spines, top of spine of volume one repaired, some offsetting to interior. Plates in fine condition. Really good price for this possible First Edition, I'm not sure about the points. But there is only one date on the copyright and title page and it is 1905. The book is dark maroon in color. GRIGGS, SUTTON ELBERT (1872-1933). Sutton Elbert Griggs, novelist and minister, was born at Chatfield, Texas, to Rev. Allen R. Griggs in 1872. His father was a former Georgia slave who had become a prominent Baptist minister in Texas. After graduating from Dallas public schools and Bishop College in Marshall (1890), Griggs attended Richmond Theological Seminary at Richmond, Virginia, between 1890 and 1893. On May 10, 1897, he married Emma J. Williams of Portsmouth, Virginia. Upon graduating from seminary Griggs took a pastorate in Berkley, Virginia. It was here that he wrote his first novel, Imperium In Imperio (1899), which may be the first black nationalist novel. Over the course of his career Griggs wrote more than a dozen books, including five novels, five social tracts, his autobiography, a short biography of John L. Webb, and The Kingdom Builder's Manual (1924), a booklet of biblical quotations. At his expense he published and distributed these works, which were generally written for "the aspiring classes of the black south." Although virtually unknown among whites, his writings were generally read by African Americans. Griggs wrote in a very direct style that was somewhat stiff and formal. He was one of the few Southern members of the Niagra movement, a civil rights group which had an outspoken platform based on the issue of racial and social justice and which eventually evolved into the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Although he has often been characterized as a black nationalist based on the plot of his first novel, this may be an overgeneralization since his subsequent novels do not contain this theme. In Imperium in Imperio Griggs chronicles the social and political injustice to which blacks are subjected. He describes the meeting of the Imperium in Imperio, a secret political organization in Waco, Texas, composed of blacks who are frustrated with the social and political status of blacks in America. In the novel the leader of the organization argues for the violent takeover of the state of Texas. Neither this work nor any subsequent novel by Griggs received widespread distribution. Although succeeding Griggs novels, Overshadowed (1901), Unfettered (1902), The Hindered Hand (1905), and Pointing the Way (1908), are deemed "less militant" by some scholars, they received poor circulation. One reason may be that many of Griggs's philosophies on rac.

Handbook of Middle American Indians, volume 13. 1st edition Modern scholarship continues to be deeply indebted to the labors of Francisco del Paso y Troncoso, less for any extended completed studies or synthesis than for a lifetime of collecting historical materials of the greatest importance to continuing investigation. His activities in Europe during the 23 years he spent searching out, copying and preparing for publication a vast store of prime documentary materials for the pre-Conquest and colonial history of Mexico have been abundantly documented. Paso y Troncoso saw his prime mission as twofold. First, he proposed to gather and publish as complete a corpus of Sahagun documents as possible. His interest in the great Franciscan had stemmed from the days when Paso y Troncoso as a young man had helped Joaquin Garcia Icazbalceta prepare the latter's Bibliografia mexicana del siglo XVI. Second, he expected to copy documentary source materials related to colonial Mexico, an elaborate group of varied papers which he generically called "Papeles de Nueva Espana." In a letter from Madrid, Paso y Troncoso outlined to the Secretary of Public Instruction his views and plans for the "Papeles de Nueva Espana". He mentioned that for various reasons the material had he had compiled for publication under that general title should be divided into series, each according to the class of data it contained. Each series would begin with a volume 1, and subsequent volumes would include similar documents, rather than being only a single series with diverse materials. Various circumstances frustrated Paso y Troncoso's dream of putting numerous volumes of several series each of the PNE into print. He published four relatively complete volumes, and two partial volumes, of Series 2. "Geography and Statistics." Complete were volumes 1, 4, 5, 6 and partially complete were volumes 3 and 7 (all included in these volumes). At Paso y Troncoso's death various works were in the printing houses of Spain. Most of these volumes seem to have been lost or dispersed. Only volume 1 of series was published, Salazar's Cronica de Nueva Espana (lacking in these volumes, but offered separately by the Hispanic Society). Several later hands have dipped into the mass of material Paso y Troncoso compiled for PNE and have utilized his transcripts or copies for publication. Series 1, "Bibliographies," was respectably issued in four volumes under the general title Indices de documentos de Nueva Espana existentes en el Archivo de Indias de Sevilla, 1928-1933 lacking in these volumes. The unpublished portions of Series 2, volume 2 "Geography and Statistics," have appeared under the imprint of Luis Vargas Rea included in these volumes. Vargas Rea in his supplement to Series 2, volume 3, in 7 parts included in these volumes did not complete the reports on the archdiocese of Mexico. From 1944 through 1946, Vargas Rea published most of the hitherto unpublished materials Paso y Troncoso had compiled for volume 7, Relationes geograficas from Michoacan. Six of the eight parts are included in these volumes. In 1948 Volume 9 of PNE, Series 2, appeared under the Vargas Rea imprint in seven small volumes included in these volumes It reproduced what Paso y Troncoso had considered to be the second part of the Memoriales of Bishop Alonso Mota y Escobar, a portion dealing with Nueva Galicia from a manuscript he had found in the British Museum. The whole of the Vargas Rea publications were numbered limited edition prints usually not exceeding 150 and often not more than 100 copies. Thus making the entire printing of Paso y Troncoso vary scarce. Poincaré was one of the greatest mathematical minds of the 19th century; his work on the "three-body problem" (the gravitational interplay of three masses) leads some to credit him as a co-discoverer of the special theory of relativity, along with Einstein and Lorentz. The present is one of two of Poincaré's major works on the subject. With the inkstamp of Paul Berg. Scarce, no copies appear in ABPC for the past 20 years. One of a very small limitation of Three Hundred Numbered in Longhand Copies [by Georgiana Burne-Jones]. Publisher's leather & cloth clamshell case. Folio (13 X 17 1/2 inches). This production consists of the famous thirty eight original water-colour designs by Burne-Jones brilliantly reproduced by the publisher. The plates are housed in the original publisher's gilt-lettered clamshell case 1/4 dark green Morocco with matching cloth refreshed by expert modest repair. As originally intended by the publisher, the introductory quarto gilt-lettered booklet bound in green cloth is present as a separate publication with the title-page, half-title, text and index printed in red & green, except for the four-page document "Facsimile of Part of the Lists of Flowers Made by Sir Edward Burne-Jones" at the back, printed in black as required. Of the 38 original loose colour plates mounted separately with facing text in their original window mattes, 35 are present with three missing plates masterfully crafted & supplied in facsimile by an expert paper conservationist matching paper stock quality, matting, colour quality & the original hand-lettered typography - no expense was spared to faithfully complete & perfect this famous presentation. Very few copies of this important example of "fin de siècle livre d'artiste" have survived in any condition at all. If any surface, they are usually bound-up as a book in the traditional fashion. Copies with the plates loose as issued are very rare [perhaps fewer than 20 copies]. "The pictures in this book are not of flowers themselves, but of subjects suggested by their names. The first meaning of many of these has long been forgotten, and new meanings are here found for them in the imagination of the artist". He began the series for his own pleasure in 1882, as rest from more laborious work, keeping by him a list of beautiful names that he had met with & choosing subjects amongst them from time to time according to his mood. All the pictures take the same form, a circle about six inches in diameter kind of magic mirror in which the vision appears and he wished them not to be separated, because, wide as is their scope, one spirit, that of pure fantasy, unites them. Many of the paintings draw on Arthurian and classical legend, and on the Bible, and some are re-workings of favourite themes, for example `Wake, Dearest!' depicts `The Sleeping Beauty', a story he turned to again and again in his several `Briar Rose' series. These freely worked little pictures, some of them unfinished, were done purely for the artist's own pleasure and it may be for this reason that they possibly contain `a fuller expression of himself than exists elsewhere in his work'. Light cover wear with some minor soiling; light damp-staining with some color run. Far better shape than usually found. "The cardstock covers were easily damaged and torn and offered little protection from child readers. Bei den Luftangriffen auf Dresden im Februar 1945 wurde der größte Teil seines bisherigen Werkes zerstört. In den folgenden Jahren entfernte er sich von den Einflüssen der Akademiezeit. 1946 Mitbegründer der Dresdner Künstlergemeinschaft"Das Ufer" und Gründungsmitglied im Verband Bildender Künstler. Er war ein Hauptvertreter der Pop-Art in der DDR, mit welcher er sich seit zwei Englandreisen Ende der 50er Jahre auseinandersetzte.
