The Honest Farmer from Arkansaw on a Lark Seein' the West

1905. Original red cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine, gilt-stamped lettering within blind-stamped decoration on front, 344, [1] pp. incl. frontispiece, illustrated with numerous plates from photographs, included in pagination, n.publ, n.pl., privately published. Spine ends & corners lightly bumped, spine very lightly sunned, two small bean-sized faint light spots on front, a similar more evident spot on back, edges faded, first three leaves are pulled at the top and partially broken from the gutter else text is bright, crisp & clean. A rare and quite interesting account of Oklahoma and the West at the dawn of the 20th century, told in a series of letters from Burt James Milam to his wife Mollie. Milam traveled to Fort Sill, Indian Territory, in July, 1901, anxious to lay claim to some of the homestead lands. Not satisfied with immediate settlement, however, Milam continued his travels through the West, visiting Corpus Christi, Galveston, Boise (spelled Boyce), St. Louis, and many other locales. His interaction with his fellow travelers, residents of the areas visited, the Native American inhabitants, and others are superbly recorded, as are his observations of American culture at a time of profound change. His keen sense of history adds great depth to his descriptions, and the marvelous selection of photographs brings them alive. These include many of American Indians; Green River, Wyoming; a bull-fighting stadium in Juarez, Old Mexico; San Pedro Creek in San Antonio; etc. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Privately Printed.

Hardcover. 318 x 229 mm (12 1/2 x 9"). 3 p.l., iv, 334 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. IV OF 10 COPIES printed on Whatman paper and initialed by the publisher (from a total issue of 670). ELEGANT DEEP BLUE STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY GEORGES MERCIER (stamp-signed on front doublure), covers with multiple-fillet gilt frame, wide raised bands decorated in blind and gilt, spine compartments featuring a fleuron centerpiece enclosed by multiple gilt rules and ornamental cornerpieces, gilt titling, POLISHED CALF DOUBLURES with a frame composed of 11 gilt fillets, navy watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In the original morocco-trimmed, leather-lined chemise and matching slipcase. WITH 81 WOOD-ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS by C. Chessa after drawings by Alfred de Richemont (comprising 20 full-page plates, a title vignette, and six head- and tailpieces, all with additional proofs in two states). A Large Paper Copy. With the original prospectus bound in at rear. Verso to final blank with red Oriental "chop" stamp of previous owner "Jean." IN ESSENTIALLY MINT CONDITION. This is a substantial binding of considerable beauty and dignity executed by Georges Mercier, who studied and worked with his father, the famous binder and gilder Émile-Philippe Mercier (the binding is signed "G Mercier S[uccesseu]r de son pere" ["Successor of his father"]). The younger Mercier joined his father's workshop in 1898 and took over as head of the firm at his father's death 12 years later. He had big shoes to fill, as Émile-Philippe was considered, at least by Prideaux, to be the finest gilder of his time, but the present volume is an indication that the son could produce notable work that manifested a refined sense of design as well as unerring execution. "Madame Bovary" is the first and by far the most celebrated novel published by Gustave Flaubert (1821-80). The relatively simple plot tells the story of a provincial physician's wife who lives more extravagantly than her means allow and who embarks on a series of adulterous affairs in reaction to a life suffused with mundanity. The novel led to an obscenity trial which resulted in Flaubert's acquittal and a predictable inflation of public interest in the work. It has become a novel of very widespread influence, being generally considered the font from which modern literary realism has flowed. Our elegant binding is a suitable covering for the present deluxe, strictly limited version of this edition, which is printed on high-quality paper and with its plates present in multiple states.

        Watercolor Album of European Views

      - N.d., 1905-1932. 43 leaves, with 86 watercolors of different views from England, France, Italy, the Lowlands, Switzerland, all done by a very accomplished hand during the first third of the 20th century. The views of both panoramic and close-up, natural scenery and architectural, with bridges, castles, cottages aplenty. The artist was concerned with capturing the beautiful and rendering it so -- this was not the effort of a modernist cynic wallowing in irony, the sordid, the underside of things -- and so there is a dream-like quality to the art. That all was done by one artist contributes to the satisfying cohesion of the album. The images might not individually be particular original in their treatment, but that doesn't negate the sensual, sensate appeal of them, and the effort that each image represented speaks to a level of appreciation for sights that is impossible to achieve in our era of commodified tourism. This kind of album is an affirmation of the rewards to be garnered on the Grand Tour of Yore. The pictures are not signed other than a handful with the initials "KP" and dated from 1905 to 1932. There can be no question that they are all by the same hand, and that KP probably had it in mind to create a cohesive album like this. The album itself is strictly utilitarian in its design, with screws used to bind the leaves together, and the boards covered with an office log leatherette which is now rubbed and worn. The leaves are of a near card stiffness, though, which is well-suited for the mounting of the watercolors thereon. The oblong album measures 26 by 21 cm, 10 by 8.5 inches, and the watercolors are of varying size but typically cover a little more than half the surface.

9 eigenh. Briefe mit U. und 2 eh. Postkarten mit U.

Kopenhagen bzw. o. O., 31. Januar 1905 bis 10. September 1909.. 20½ SS. Quartal, S. 155-163). I. 3.

. Röfo Erg., 11. - (Archiv und Atlas der norm. u. path. Anatomie in typischen Röntgenbildern. Hrsg. von Albers-Schönberg). - Hamburg, Lucas Gräfe & Sillem, 1905, 4°, 6 orig. photograph. Tafeln, 6 Skizzenblätter, 30 Abb., OHLnBd.. Artur Schüller was born in Brünn, Czechoslovakia, when Gregor (Johann) Mendel (1822-1884) was still experimenting with plants in the garden of the Augustinian monastery Königskloster in the town. His father was a specialist in otolaryngology, and a friend of Adam Politzer (1835-1920). He was outstanding at school, especially in the humanities and music, and he entered medicine in Vienna aged 17. He graduated M.D. in 1899 with the highest honours, being awarded a prize by Franz Joseph at a special audience, which had only been given twice during the emperor's 60 year reign. He subsequently worked at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus and the psychiatric clinic. He was habilitated for neurology and psychiatry at Vienna in 1907, becoming titular ausserordentlicher professor in 1914. - Guido Holzknecht (1872-1931) invited him to join his X-ray department and rapidly he fulfilled the promise of his undergraduate days by his careful analysis of X-ray examinations of the skull, which set out fundamental principles still forming the basis of this examination. In 1910 Schüller performed experiments on dogs that suggested the practicality of cordotomy for pain relief. He also suggested the transphenoidal nasal approach for pituitary operations. In 1909, aged 35, he was appointed university professor in Vienna, where his colleagues were his former teachers Theodor Billroth (1829-1894), Carl Wilhelm Hermann Nothnagel (1841-1905), Hans Finsterer (1877-1955), Adam Politzer, Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902) and Julius Wagner Jauregg (1857-1940). - When World War I came Schüller did much medical work for the army, and wrote a paper describing a patient with Hand-Schüller disease in 1915. Following the war, Vienna changed from a city of prosperity to one of poverty and in the hyperinflation that followed he found great difficulty in making ends meet. In order to eke out a living, he undertook postgraduate classes in private on X-ray diagnosis of disorders of the skull, ear, nose, and throat and made a collection of almost every disorder known of the skull, which unfortunately was lost when he left Vienna. He wrote over 300 papers, monographs and books, and in one described the disorder osteoporosis circumscripta cranii, which is an early stage of Paget's disease of the skull and may be detected before any symptomatology. - With the rise of Hitler, Schüller left Vienna hurriedly in 1938, leaving most of his possessions behind. His two sons were prevented at the last moment from leaving. After a short time in England he went to Australia where, at the age of 65, he commenced to build up a career. He worked in the X-ray department of St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, where Dr. John O'Sullivan, who had been a pupil of his in Vienna, was an associate. He was much sought after as an X-ray consultant and received X-rays from all over the country for his opinion. During the latter years he was troubled by depression and developed Parkinson's disease. His two sons died in a concentration camp. -cf whonamedit
