[N.p., likely New York, 1905. Minor edge wear, some thumb-soiling, a few examples with minor marginal surface wear. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A substantial archive of original art by William E. Spader, one of the principal artists hired to create illustrations for Edward Harriman's monumental fourteen- volume work THE HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES, published throughout the first decade-and-a-half of the 20th century. This important collection documents one of the great scientific expeditions of the late 19th century. Edward H. Harriman was a wealthy railroad magnate, one of the original robber barons of lore, who greatly desired to hunt bear in Alaska. Never one to do anything small, he decided not only to travel to Alaska to hunt bear on Kodiak Island, but to finance a major scientific expedition to Alaska along the way. The Harriman Expedition comprised an elite roster of scientists, artists, photographers, and naturalists whose goal was to explore and document the Alaskan coastline. For almost two months, in June and July 1899, the S.S. GEORGE W. ELDER steamed up the coast from Seattle to Siberia while various experts, including John Muir, Edward Curtis, and other botanists, biologists, geologists, artists and photographers recorded what they encountered along the way. The greatest benefit of the expedition turned out to be the sizeable published record of the journey, which Harriman financed himself. The fourteen-volume HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES was published by Doubleday beginning in 1901, and remains a landmark of Arctic exploration. William Edgar Spader was a Brooklyn-born craftsperson, and illustrator, whose work appears in much of Harriman's Alaska series. Spader lived and worked in New York, and is best remembered for his watercolors depicting beautiful women of the Art Deco period. Spader's drawings here show landscapes, numerous views of glaciers, seal hunting, camp scenes, several scenes featuring canoeing or kayaking, one illustration of death head carvings, and much more. Some of the illustrations are captioned in pencil on the reverse, identifying specific views of Davidson Glacier, Hinchinbrook Island, Spruce Island, Hanging Valley, Grewingk Glacier, Charpentier Glacier, Plover Bay, Reid Glacier, Yale Glacier, Chilkoot Lake, Russell Fiord, College Fiord, the head of Lynn Canal, a view upland near Walker Bay, the tundra near Port Clarence, a view showing the caves in Barry Glacier, a landscape showing the ridged surface of Columbia Glacier, a large landscape showing the moraine of Columbia Glacier, a landscape of the hills near Brady Glacier, a large scene of an overturned forest near the La Perouse Glacier, an indoor view of a church at Metlakahtla, and a distant view of St. Paul Village, among others. A few examples show production notes, including size notations and penciled frame lines. Spader's dozens of illustrations for Harriman's published work are well-executed black-and-white line drawings after photographs from the expedition by the likes of Grove Karl Gilbert, C. Hart Merriam, A. K. Fisher, W. B. Devereaux, and others. Numerous examples of Spader's original artwork was used to illustrate volume one of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES, starting with John Burroughs' introductory essay, "Narrative of the Expedition." One illustration is captioned on the reverse, "Little Auklets Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea For Burroughs' Article." It is marked in pencil "Vol. 1, Pg. 98," where it appears in the printed work. Another illustration captioned on the verso, in pencil, "Church at Metlakahtla" is captioned in the published work as "Interior of Church Made by Indians at Metlakahtla" on page 25 of Burroughs' work. An illustration by Spader of an irrigating water wheel can be seen on page 13 of Burroughs' essay, another of a canoe in drift ice in Yakutat Bay is found on page 95, and yet another of "Yakutat Indians Paddling" appears on page 60. More Spader illustrations can be found in John Muir's contribution in volume one of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES; two views of Davidson Glacier appear on page 121 of volume one with both of the original illustrations having pencil notations on the verso identifying them as "Davidson Glacier...Muir or After." Yet more Spader illustrations appear in the final essay in volume one of the published work, George Bird Grinnell's "The Natives of the Alaska Coast Region," namely: The Tlinkit Dance Rattle (p. 139), a Tlinkit canoe of southeast Alaska (p. 140), a Yakutat sealing canoe (p. 162), the aforementioned death's head carving (p. 165), an "Eskimo Summer House and Fireplace, Plover Bay, Siberia" (p. 171), an Eskimo man and woman at Plover Bay (p. 175), and an Eskimo umiak (p. 179). Numerous illustrations of glaciers included here are featured in Gilbert's GLACIERS AND GLACIATION (volume three of the series). An examination of the text yields no fewer than thirteen examples of Spader's artwork featured in the published version of Gilbert's work, highlights of which include large drawings of Barry Glacier, College Fiord, Reid Glacier from the Northeast, the ice cliff of Hubbard Glacier hovering over Disenchantment Bay, and the moraine of the Columbia Glacier. Three of Spader's drawings present here illustrate a poem called "The Song of the Innuit" by William H. Dall, which was printed at the end of the second volume of the HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES. Dr. Dall was a paleontologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Honorary Curator of Mollusks at the U.S. National Museum, and also a member of the scientific party for the Harriman expedition. One illustration titled "Black Iceberg" is marked on the reverse, "Harriman Alaska Expd. Return original & proof to C. Hart Merriam Washington D.C." Clinton Hart Merriam was the head of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy at the United States Department of Agriculture, one of the founders of the National Geographic Society, and most importantly here, the organizer of the scientific party for the Harriman Alaska Expedition. Merriam's treatise on the Bogoslof volcano in volume two of Harriman's Alaska yields yet another Spader illustration utilized in the published work, namely his drawing of Murre's eggs on page 330. This wonderful archive of Spader's work for the Harriman publication is a wealth of research material for understanding the utilization of art during book publication, and for examination of the artist's technique in translating photographs to drawings.

        2 autograph letters signed.

Arcueil, 22 Oct. and 2 Nov. 1905. - 8vo. and 12mo. 2+1 pp. With one autogr. envelope. To Dr. Louis Lemonnier: "My good Monsieur Louis - Thank you for the five hundred francs that you have sent, to my account succession Fortin, dated 19th of this month. So, I owe you to this day, one thousand three hundred twenty francs (1,320 f.), that is to say: Overdue 300 (three hundred) 1st remittance (September 1905) 500 (five hundred) Remitted in Paris 20 (twenty) 2nd remittance (October 1905) 500 (five hundred) [altogether:] 1,320 francs. Yesterday, Monsieur Tornare had a fall in his kitchen. Doctor Durand came to see him. It is nothing. It is a type of congestion that made him in that state: his heart must have skipped a beat. It is though to be his fault. Madame Tornare reproaches him for not knowing how to cough to his advantage [profitably in text]; she explains that in details to him and with illustration [spot], but him, seated at his counter, looks at her with unintelligent big eyes expressing true regret for not being able to understand such simple theme. - 'But look at me', disagreeably shouts to him Madame Tornare. And him, still looks at the one he loves, hoping, no doubt, that his poor brain will shed light. Of course, Madame is not satisfied, and judges him inferior: - 'But look at me'. Then drily, harsh toned: - 'When you do not know how to cough nor look, don't talk'. Madame Tornare is a bitter Madame Geng, with no literature or philosophy [ ]" (22 Oct. 1905). - "My good old man - Very chic. You can send the rest, that is to say seven hundred francs. Please deduct, expense for sending the money, I wish to pay for it. It is the least. Thanks for all you have done [fold] for me. You are a good fellow, very nice and kind. Thanks again. My respects to Madame Lemonnier" (2 Nov. 1905).

[Yearbook]: Oak Leaves: Class of 1905 Baptist University for Women

Raleigh, North Carolina: Baptist University for Women. 1905. Oblong quarto. Maroon cloth. 88pp. Illustrated by the Art Class of the Baptist University for Women. Printed in black and red. Very good with a cracked front hinge, rubbing and modest wear at the corners. A yearbook for the graduating class of the Baptist University for Women in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1905, now Meredith College. The brainchild of Baptist Thomas Meredith who pioneered the idea of providing "a first-rate course of female education," the Baptist Female University opened its doors in 1899 after delays due to the Civil War delegated the goal of higher female education in the South. This was only the second year Oak Leaves was published, the tradition began in 1904 after the name of the college was changed from the Baptist Female University. The first section of the yearbook displays the different classes in descending order accompanied with a photo of each of the women, a class history, and a class poem. The sections thereafter show the activities, sports, and clubs at the university, each with a group picture of the participants printed as glossy plates. These include the Y.W.C.A., Glee Club, and literary societies, among others; as well as the basketball, baseball, and tennis teams all in uniform. One club named the Spinsters' Club is aptly illustrated with line drawings of cats in some turn-of-the-century version of a "crazy cat lady" joke with the motto, "of all the sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are there: 'where are the men'." 1905 marked the first year that the student body established a student government, one of the first such in the South. An interesting and typographically attractive yearbook demonstrating the nascency of women's education in the early 20th Century. .

Cloth a. bit spotted, some wear along outer front joint, scattered foxing to. text block, a very good copy. A very scarce book. (#151869). First edition. "Supernatural romance set in eighteenth century Cornwall. A child conceived by witchcraft is in rapport with the sea-folk who dwell down among the black weeds. Strangely evocative imagery within a fairly conventional plot of a maiden seduced and abandoned." - Robert Knowlton. John Ruyle comments: "Changeling woman born of the sea returns from death as mermaid to reclaim her love. Witchcraft, haunted seaweed, ancient legends dating back to Baal worshippers. All in all very good, though overwritten." Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963) or Reginald (1978; 1992).

In addition, the position of the dedication and contents pages are reversed.First performed on April 30, 1902 at the Opéra- Comique in Paris under the baton of André Messager (1853-1929), one of the dedicatees. The other, Georges Hartmann (1843-1900), was an executive of the publisher Fromont. "Debussy finished a first version of the opera in 1895. Several attempts were made to get Pelléas et Mélisande staged. but these foundered. At last, on 3 May 1901, the director of the Opéra- Comique, Albert Carré, gave [Debussy] a written undertaking to put on Pelléas. Preparations were held up by Maeterlinck, who wanted his mistress Georgette Leblanc to take the role of Mélisande. In spite of public demonstrations at the dress rehearsal and first performance. and a chilly reception from several of the critics, the work caught on and made a powerful impression on the musical world at large."         Thirty-Five Years in the East.

Calcutta: The "Bangabasi" Office,, 1905. Adventures, Discoveries, Experiments, and Historical Sketches, relating to the Punjab and Cashmere; in Connection with Medicine, Botany, Pharmacy, &c. Octavo (211 × 125 mm). Modern "native" black half sheep, green cloth boards, title gilt direct to the spine, gilt rolls to the spine and corner edges, original front wrapper (stained, old repairs) bound in. Portrait frontispiece and 15 other plates, 6 of them folding, and a folding map. Externally bright, contents browned and with a series of worm-tracks through the block, but not in any way fragile, about very good. First published in German in Vienna under the title, Früchte aus dem Morgenlande oder Reise-Erlebnisse, nebst naturhistorisch-medizinischen Erfahrungen in 1851, translated into English the following year, this uncommon Calcutta reprint is apparently the first such. Honigberger (1795-1869), a doctor trained in both conventional and, his preferred, homeopathic, medicine, born in Krostadt in Romania, left Transylvania in 1815 and travelled though the Middle East, Egypt, Arabia, Persia and on to India. He arrived in Lahore in 1829 and, having treated Ranjit Singh's favourite horse for an ulcerated leg, gained the confidence of the Maharaja, becoming court physician, as well as being put in charge of the gunstock manufactory and gunpowder mills, a facsimile plate of the document of his appointment to these varied positions is included. Honigberger gives "his observations about Ranjit Singh, Maharaja Kharak Signh, Naunihal Singh, Sher Singh, Dhian Singh, Chand Kaur, Dalip Singh, Hira Singh, political changes, bloodshed, role of Akalis, faaticism of Jallah, Baba Var Singh, battle of Sobraon, rile of Teja Singh, Lehna Singh and Sikh battles. He also told many interesting day-to-day happenings of the Sikh State" (Chopra). Honigberger also provides much on medical practices in West, South and Central Asia. The plates include a hakim, or Mohammedan doctor, an attar or druggist, a still, a "B'hangee, or Hemp-Plant Drinker", and a "Faqueer Postee, or Poppy-Head Drinker", together with portraits of the members of the durbar or ruler's household, and an interesting map of the railway route from Bokhara to Orenburg. An unconventional, but painstaking observer, his account is a highly appealing curiosity amongst the more established account of the Punjabi court at the time.

      A. Legoupy. [Ateliers de Reproductions Fortier et Marotte, [Paris] 1905 - First edition. 34 chromolithographic plates (including pictorial title) after watercolors by Roque, printed contents leaf (printed recto only). 1 vols. Oblong folio (19 X 13 inches). Rare Belle Epoque Sporting work with a nostalgic letter from the artist. Charming belle epoque sporting work on the hunt of the Château du Francport, one of the oldest and most prestigious in France. The album of watercolors by Roque includes hunting scenes and portraits of the master - the marquis de l'Aigle - and principal members, as well as guests and followers in their carriages (and early motorcars), and the hunt costume of grey and amaranth; the final plate is a view of the Château and a recumbent hound with a large Aigle monogram. The hunt was disbanded with the onset of war in the Oise valley in August 1914; the Château du Francport is situated in the forest of Compiègne, a few hundred meters from the site of the Armistice.Loosely inserted is a 3 pp. autograph letter from the artist, signed ("P. Roque"), dated 4 November 1946. Writing from Montifray, Beaumont la Ronce, Indre et Loire, to an unnamed friend of long standing, Roque apologizes for writing in Fench ("plus à mon aise dans ma langue paternelle, et puis peu importe langue puisque vous les parlez à peu pres toutes"), discussing Haïphong, in Indochina, "ce pays que nous avons connu si tranquille", and recalling earlier days and discussing his circumstances in the aftermath of the Second World War, which he spent in the family château in Indre et Loire. Roque was the nephew of Victor and Xavier Roque, brothers who built a shipping and manufacturing fortune in French Indochina. Thiébaud 790-791 ("tiré à petit nombre; rare").         The Drift of Buddhism From India to the Mongols and Thibet.

London: Robert Banks and son, 1905., 1905. Octavo. Bound in paper covers; originally priced at 6d. With a coloured folding map showing the distribution of world religions. The paper cover is somewhat worn, with some small tears to joints, also somewhat tanned. Largely free from spotting, though with some rust spots where the staples have rusted. The coloured map has been neatly repaired along one fold with archival tape. This pamphlet provides an insight into early perspectives on the newly explored Tibetan plateaux, and speculates about the history of the spread of Buddhism across the Asian continent. Fraser was very interested in psychical research, and is principally known for his "Darkness and Light in the Land of Egypt", which examined wellsprings of invisible energy in the physical world. His view on the success and spread of Buddhism is as partial as one might expect in this period, and, though he cites a number of divergent scholarly views, Fraser argues that 'Buddhism and Braminism are essentially the same belief'. He similarly believes the 'sacred literature of the Hindoos' to be of 'comparatively recent date', and that Buddhism and Druidism share the same ancestral roots. This partiality is further evinced in the map of world religions, which divides the world into Christianity, Buddhism, Mohammedism, and pagan religions. However, Fraser expresses concern that Buddhism is 'waking up', and will soon be a force in the world, as it was when Gengis Khan was coerced by a 'secret posse of priestly advisors'. According to Fraser, half the world's population is Buddhist, so this constitutes a very clear and present danger. It is unclear whether this account was written before the Boxer Rebellion, as no mention is made of the anti-Christian sentiment displayed by the Yihetuan, nor to the specifics of the current Manchu governing dynasty, including the Guangxu Emperor or the Empress Dowager Cixi.

[Various places, 1905. Most pieces pasted into albums. Albums are quarto and folio in size. Largest album lacking spine and front board, spine deteriorated on second album, leaves loose in both. Some light wear to leaves in all four albums, some heavier than others. Overall, the individual pieces are in very good condition. Large group of primarily American trade cards, advertisements, and other ephemeral printed items, most printed in chromolithographic full color. The collection spans a variety of printing firms, in various locales, including Boston, New York, New Bedford, Philadelphia, and Buffalo, among others. In addition to chromolithographs of flowers and other ornamental scenes, there are trade cards advertising a wide variety of products: corsets, soap, thread, medicines and remedies, early appliances and household goods, shoes, furniture, dry goods, cigars, and many more. Most of the advertisements and trade cards are aimed at a female audience, relying on the desires of the burgeoning Victorian middle class. Some show African Americans in extreme caricatures, notably a series of cards for cigars. A significant archive of ephemeral items, neatly collected and grouped.
