The Drift of Buddhism From India to the Mongols and Thibet.

London: Robert Banks and son, 1905., 1905. Octavo. Bound in paper covers; originally priced at 6d. With a coloured folding map showing the distribution of world religions. The paper cover is somewhat worn, with some small tears to joints, also somewhat tanned. Largely free from spotting, though with some rust spots where the staples have rusted. The coloured map has been neatly repaired along one fold with archival tape. This pamphlet provides an insight into early perspectives on the newly explored Tibetan plateaux, and speculates about the history of the spread of Buddhism across the Asian continent. Fraser was very interested in psychical research, and is principally known for his "Darkness and Light in the Land of Egypt", which examined wellsprings of invisible energy in the physical world. His view on the success and spread of Buddhism is as partial as one might expect in this period, and, though he cites a number of divergent scholarly views, Fraser argues that 'Buddhism and Braminism are essentially the same belief'. He similarly believes the 'sacred literature of the Hindoos' to be of 'comparatively recent date', and that Buddhism and Druidism share the same ancestral roots. This partiality is further evinced in the map of world religions, which divides the world into Christianity, Buddhism, Mohammedism, and pagan religions. However, Fraser expresses concern that Buddhism is 'waking up', and will soon be a force in the world, as it was when Gengis Khan was coerced by a 'secret posse of priestly advisors'. According to Fraser, half the world's population is Buddhist, so this constitutes a very clear and present danger. It is unclear whether this account was written before the Boxer Rebellion, as no mention is made of the anti-Christian sentiment displayed by the Yihetuan, nor to the specifics of the current Manchu governing dynasty, including the Guangxu Emperor or the Empress Dowager Cixi.

[Various places, 1905. Most pieces pasted into albums. Albums are quarto and folio in size. Largest album lacking spine and front board, spine deteriorated on second album, leaves loose in both. Some light wear to leaves in all four albums, some heavier than others. Overall, the individual pieces are in very good condition. Large group of primarily American trade cards, advertisements, and other ephemeral printed items, most printed in chromolithographic full color. The collection spans a variety of printing firms, in various locales, including Boston, New York, New Bedford, Philadelphia, and Buffalo, among others. In addition to chromolithographs of flowers and other ornamental scenes, there are trade cards advertising a wide variety of products: corsets, soap, thread, medicines and remedies, early appliances and household goods, shoes, furniture, dry goods, cigars, and many more. Most of the advertisements and trade cards are aimed at a female audience, relying on the desires of the burgeoning Victorian middle class. Some show African Americans in extreme caricatures, notably a series of cards for cigars. A significant archive of ephemeral items, neatly collected and grouped.

Please notify before visiting to see a book. "With the colourful, chromatic 'Salome' he found a new, modernist voice for the stage, one that resonated throughout a Europe preoccupied with the image of the sensual femme fatale. Within a year of its 1905 Dresden première, this 'succès de scandale' had been performed in six German cities as well as Graz, Prague and Milan, and its fame quickly spread throughout Europe and the USA." Strand, Ejnar Hertzsprung, 1873-1967, Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific 80 (1968) pp.51-56. - FIRST EDITION and presentation copy of the very rare offprint with "Überreicht vom Verfasser" printed on front wrapper upper right. In 1905 Hertzsprung published the article "Zur Strahlung der Sterne", unfortunately in the - astronomical and academically - obscure journal "Zeitschrift für Wissenschaftliche Photographie, Photophysik und Photochemie" in which he positioned his observations and the results in tables, not in figures and diagrams. In his paper Zur Strahlung der Sterne (on the radiation of stars), "Hertzsprung showed, ?rst, that stars with very sharp absorption lines in Antonia Maury's classi?cation system were more luminous than others - a discovery that became the foundation of the method of stellar parallax - and, second, that stars could be classi?ed in two series, the main sequence (in modern parlance) and the high-luminosity giant stars when plotted in a diagram of intrinsic luminosity vs. temperature. Because of the appearance of these results in a photography journal, it had little impact in the astronomical community, and it was not until the same relationship had been discovered by Henry Norris Russell, several years later, that Hertzsprung's discoveries were recognized. The diagram became known as the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram." (K. van Berkel et al., The History of Science in the Netherlands, 1999, p.460). Hertzsprung's work on the radiation of stars was reprinted in Oswalds Klassiker der exakten Wissenschaften, Vol. 255. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gehirnpathologie. I. Allgemeine Einleitung. II. Lokalisation. III. Gehirnblutungen.

Wien. Hölder. 1905.. Zweite, gänzlich umgearbeitete und vermehrte Auflage. 2 Bände. Lex. -8°. XIV, 640 S. mit 357 Abb.; S. 641-1319. HLn. d. (F. Georgi). - Kolle, Große Nervenärzte III, S. 157 ff. - Fischer II, S. 1060. - Engelhardt I, S. 417. - Gutes, fleckenfr. Ex.

Pre-Raphaelitism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (Two Volumes) with letter from author

London: Macmillan. Very Good-. 1905. Hardcover. Both vols: Dark green boards; a little marked; gilt titling still fairly bright; gilt top edges. Vol I has some wear to corners and external hinges, and light wear to base of spine, but binding intact. B/w frontispiece + illustrations, with tissue guards, in both vols. Bookplate of the writer and biographer George Somes Layard (G.S. Layard) on each front pastedown. Tipped in to the front of each volume are undated cuttings from The Westminster Gazette of articles (one per volume) by Layard on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, in which Hunt was, of course, prominent. Layard also wrote a study of another eminent Victorian artist, "Life and Letters of Charles Keene of Punch", and also tipped in to the front of Volume I is a letter from Hunt to Layard (dd Oct 7. 1891) containing some reminiscences of Keene, who had died the previous January. The letter contains many amendments and emendments (in Hunt's own hand), and his text fills almost every square inch of both sides of the page, written both horizontally and vertically. As an additional bonus, also tipped in is a letter from Mrs Hunt (dd Dec 13th 1905) to Layard inviting him to dinner the following Sunday. ; 512 + 493 pages .

A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way

Washington, DC: Carnegie Institution. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, one of only 700 copies, of Barnard's magnificent star atlas, containing the first photographs to show the structure of the Milky Way. Complete with 51 mounted silver prints (as issued) and 50 charts and tables. RARE. "The greatest photographic legacy of Barnard was his magnum opus: A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way… To capture the Milky Way in all its glory, Edward Barnard used the Bruce photographic telescope of the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago. Finance for the telescope had been given to the University of Chicago by Miss Catherine W. Bruce. The Bruce telescope actually consisted of three individual tubes bound rigidly on the same mounting: two photographic telescopes of 10-inch and 6 1/4-inch aperture, and a 5-inch aperture visual telescope used for tracking (guiding) of the stars as the Earth rotates. The great importance of the photographic telescopes lay in their wide-field coverage; the 10-inch had a 50-inch focal length and, to quote Barnard, gave 'exquisite definition' over a field of about 7 degrees (or 14 full moons). The plate-holder for the 10-inch carried glass negative 12 inches square, while that for the 6 1/4-inch carried glass plates measuring 8 x 10 inches. "The scale of the photographs secured with the 10-inch was exceptionally well adapted to revealing the structure of the Milky Way; every inch covered just over one degree of sky. George Ellery Hale, director of the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory owned by the Carnegie Institute of Washington, invited Barnard to Mount Wilson in 1905. A generous grant from Mr. J.D. Hooker of Los Angeles allowed Barnard to transport the Bruce telescope to the Mount Wilson site. Barnard secured forty of his fifty photographs for his Atlas, from one of the world's premier observing sites, in a period spanning February to September, 1905… "The Atlas was completed by Edwin Frost, Director of the Yerkes Observatory in Chicago, and by Barnard's niece, Mary Calvert. Barnard had, however, personally examined 35 700 photographic prints to select only the best to feature in his Atlas, of which seven hundred were produced. The two volume Barnard Atlas is today an exceedingly rare jewel…" (Block and Freeman, Shrouds of the Night). Provenance: With presentation inscription in each volume, "To my friend Gust. Soderberg / With Compliments of John C. Deagan / Chicago December 16 1929 / [signed] John C. Deagan". John Calhoun Deagan (1851-1934), the founder of the J.C. Deagan Company, was, in addition to being an amateur astronomer, a noted musician and manufacturer who became a pioneer in developing scientific tuning mechanisms. Washington DC: Carnegie Institution, 1927. Oblong quarto (Vol 1: 11x11x1.25 inches; Vol 2: 11x10 x1.75 inches), original cloth; housed in custom box. Two volumes. With portrait frontispiece, plate of the Bruce Photographic Telescope, 51 mounted silver prints, 50 charts and tables. A few scratches and stray marks of soiling to cloth; a little rubbing to extremities. Offsetting from portrait (as always, even with the tissue guard). An outstanding copy of a book usually found ex-libris and in terrible condition.

Underwood's Proof sheet of photographs for stereoviews of Tasmania.

Underwood & Underwood, ca 1905, New York: - Proof sheet of photographs for stereo cards of Tasmania. From the archives of Underwood & Underwood, some of the views were made into stereoviews, indicated by a check, and others were not used. 63 original tipped on photos, ca. 1905. Mounted on 5 folio sheets consecutively numbered illustrating Tasmania: Hobart, Launceston, New Norfolk, farm views, wharves, etc. Underwood & Underwood were founded in 1887 and were an American firm that made and sold stereo views and later rented images to newspapers and other publications. In 1895 they were the first to enter the education field with the production of stereo views and, in 1898, they began marketing the Underwood Travel System - boxed sets of views of a particular country with descriptions of the scenes printed on the back in 6 languages. They then began to hire photographers and buy images from all over the world. These proof sheets were used to choose the particular view selected for the stereo card. The numbers on the sheet were used to locate the negatives (mostly glass plate), which were kept in large files. The majority of the images are unpublished and most of the negatives were destroyed. Photos are mostly 3 3/4 x 4 1/4" mounted on both sides of 19 x 14 1/4" sheets, usually 6 to 9 on a side. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
