I etwas stärker) und Kapitale etwas bestossen. Innen gut, insgesamt schönes Exemplar. Sehr selten. Hayn-Got.

Some Old French and English Ballads edited by Robert Steele.

London: Eragny Press, 1905. Bound by one of England's greatest women binders. Wood engraved frontispiece in five colours and 19 initial letters in red designed and engraved by Lucien Pissarro. One of 200 copies printed in red and black in Brook and music type on Arches Eragny watermarked paper. 8vo., in a simple and handsome chestnut brown binding by Katherine Adams with her signature in gilt at the rear, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt border on the turn-ins, housed in the original foldover box of grey linen. A beautiful copy. An early example of Katherine Adams binding who was a pupil of Sarah Prideaux and worked for a time with Douglas Cockerell, although she was really self taught as this training only lasted for 4 months. She began binding on her own in 1901 receving her first commission from William Morris and bound for the greatest collectors and printers of her day. Her bindings are known for their techincial skill and the excellence of her gilding. Like Lucien Pissarro, Steele was a follower of Morris and had a passionate interest in manuscripts, the history of printing and early printed music. He produced the work in this book as a commission for Lucien. With the label of Philip Duschnes the noted New York dealer.

Quarto, pp. 156, beige cloth boards with gilt lettering and abstract design to front, numerous halftone photos, many tinted, text in Polish.         Night Fall in the Ti-Tree

Melbourne: Sign of the Rabbit, 1905. Teague, Violet and Geraldine Rede. Small quarto. (32)pp. Extremely rare first edition. Illustrated with sixteen woodcut illustrations in the Japanese style, six of which are double-page spreads. All but four minor illustrations are hand-initialed in ink by the contributing artist. Set opposite the illustrations, the letterpress-printed verse is a cautionary tale, warning rabbits in their dens to avoid hunter's traps. The atmospheric images, rendered in earth tones, deftly capture both the danger lurking in the night, as well as the peace of a rabbit's simple life. Entirely handmade by Violet Teague and her friend Geraldine Reed in Teague's Melbourne home, Night Fall in the Ti-Tree is the first book in Australia to be produced and illustrated in the Japanese style using colored woodcuts. Teague, who was probably introduced to Japanese prints while studying in England and Europe in the late 1800s, tried to imitate Japanese production techniques as closely as she could. The illustrations were created using water-based inks brushed directly onto the woodblocks, which had been cut along the grain rather than against it, as in Western woodcuts. The binding is also in the Japanese style, with the pages folded at the fore-edge, and stab-sewn through the spine with a green ribbon. Two common techniques in Japanese illustration were also employed to great advantage: asymmetrical illustrations that extend past the edge of the page, and the division of an illustration into two parts for a double-page spread. Taken as a whole, the work is a beautiful and compelling tribute to Japanese style, as well as an important example of Japoniste art in Australia. Teague went on to become a great promoter of Japanese woodblock prints, writing articles and giving demonstrations on technique. Reed published her own book of woodcut illustrations with verse in 1909, titled A Little Book of Trees. Very few copies of this first edition of Night Fall in the Ti-Tree were printed or sold, although it was exhibited several times in Australia following its production, even winning an award at the 1907 First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work. In 1906, it was picked up by English publisher Elkin Mathews for a second edition. Teague re-worked the title page, crediting herself as the author, changing the year on the rabbit logo, and adding Mathews's information under the original imprint. Compared to the 1906 edition, this first 1905 printing has lighter tonal printing to the plates and blacker printing of the text. Original ties replaced with green ribbon, and protected by a custom-made drop-back box. A fine example of a rare item. Together with the 1988 National Gallery of Australia facsimile of the second edition.

London: Macmillan. Very Good-. 1905. Hardcover. Both vols: Dark green boards; a little marked; gilt titling still fairly bright; gilt top edges. Vol I has some wear to corners and external hinges, and light wear to base of spine, but binding intact. B/w frontispiece + illustrations, with tissue guards, in both vols. Bookplate of the writer and biographer George Somes Layard (G.S. Layard) on each front pastedown. Tipped in to the front of each volume are undated cuttings from The Westminster Gazette of articles (one per volume) by Layard on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, in which Hunt was, of course, prominent. Layard also wrote a study of another eminent Victorian artist, "Life and Letters of Charles Keene of Punch", and also tipped in to the front of Volume I is a letter from Hunt to Layard (dd Oct 7. 1891) containing some reminiscences of Keene, who had died the previous January. The letter contains many amendments and emendments (in Hunt's own hand), and his text fills almost every square inch of both sides of the page, written both horizontally and vertically. As an additional bonus, also tipped in is a letter from Mrs Hunt (dd Dec 13th 1905) to Layard inviting him to dinner the following Sunday. ; 512 + 493 pages .

        VERS ET PROSE, TOME 1, mars 1905 - VERS ET PROSE, TOME 1, mars-avril-mai 1905 - LA NOUVELLE REVUE FRANCAISE N° 1 du 15 novembre 1908 - LA NOUVELLE REVUE FRANCAISE N° 1 du1er février 1909.

Paris, s.n., 15 novembre 1908.

They had been his Dublin, New Hampshire, neighbors in the summer of 1905, and again in the summer of 1906. Clemens attended a soiree at their 388 Beacon Street home in Boston in October 1905.In an article titled ""Mark Twain's Guide to Health,"" in the Boston Sunday Post, May 20, 1906, towards the end of an interview with a Post reporter at Twain's summer home in Dublin, Mark Twain said, ""And now, my dear friend, as long as you come from Boston, let me tell you of the little secret about my health that a Boston woman taught me. I was suffering with that affliction that others call indigestion at the time I was spending two weeks in Boston at the home of Mrs. S.B. Pearmain, and that lady asked me: 'Mr. Clemens, won’t you let me feed you as you should be fed for a week or two and allow me to prove that your dyspepsia can be cured or helped?' It was agreed … She told me that I needed plenty of food, as I had been starving an excellent digestive apparatus, and there is not a doctor that lives today who can tell me that she was not right in her cure … The change that the woman brought about in me was so marked that it would not take even a fool long to find out that she was right…"""

        The voyage of the 'Discovery'.

London Smith Elder 1905 - First edition, second impression. 2 volumes, 8vo., 260 full-page and smaller illustrations by Dr. E.A. Wilson and other members of the expedition, photogravure frontispieces, 12 coloured plates, panoramas and maps, original blue cloth gilt, original light blue dust-wrappers, light spotting, an excellent set. Rare in Dust-Wrappers. Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904. In the period leading up to the first world war, the the estate manager of the Hall was E. Bernard Wilson, elder brother of Edward Wilson. Edward Wilson was appointed to serve as second surgeon, artist, and zoologist on Scott's Discovery Expedition. The owners of the Hall, understandably excited by their link to the newly explored Antarctic regions, acquired the present copy and treated it with reverence, not discarding the dust-wrappers as was usual at the time. Scott was given the command of the National Antarctic expedition and was made Commander of the Discovery. The expedition was organized by the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Society and its aim was the scientific exploration of South Victoria Land and the ice barrier, discovered by Sir James Ross, and the interior of the Antarctic continent. Scott made sledge journeys inland with Shackleton and Wilson. He made the first long journey towards the interior of Antarctica, and in addition to surveying the coast of South Victoria Land and taking soundings of the Ross Sea, important scientific discoveries were made in the fields of zoology, magnetism, and meteorology. An Account Of The Country And People Of Central Tibet And Of The Progress Of The Mission Sent There By The English Government In The Year 1903-4. London, 1905, Hurst and Blackett, First U.K. Edition. Two volume set, xix, 414 pp; xi, 426 pp. Titles in red & black, with half-title in Vol. II only. 2 frontispieces, Portraits, 7 maps & plans (4 in colour of which 1 is folding), 24 photogravures, 13 coloured plates, 4 B&W plates and numerous text illustrations, (many full-page, a few in colour). Tissue guards with legends. Account of the 1903-04 British expedition to Tibet led by Lieut.-Col. Francis Edward Younghusband. Landon accompanied the expedition as special correspondent of the 'Times'. Dispatched on the orders of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, and prompted by the Russian presence in Tibet, the Tibet Frontier Commission was officially instructed to establish diplomatic relations with the government of Tibet and to resolve the dispute over the border between Tibet and British-held Sikkim. Escorted by a large military force led by Brigadier-General J.R.L. Macdonald, the expedition amounted to a de facto invasion. Armed conflicts erupted, in one instance resulting in the massacre of hundreds of poorly armed and poorly trained Tibetan soldiers, who proved to be no match for a professional army equipped with modern rifles and Maxim machine guns. Some five thousand Tibetans lost their lives as opposed to only five British casualties. Original cloth decorative boards, slightly faded in places, light foxing to outer leaves, otherwise tight and clean, a handsome set. No DJ, VG. NZ$1,800 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph postcard signed to Edward Deacon Girdlestone

Wimborne, 1905. Wallace, Alfred Russel (1823-1913). Autograph postcard signed to Edward Deacon Girdlestone (1829-92). Broadstone, Wimborne, Oct. 31, 1905. 90 x 115 mm. Faint foxing but fine otherwise. From Alfred Russel Wallace, co-creator with Darwin of the theory of evolution by natural selection, to socialist clergyman and author Edward Deacon Girdlestone, discussing Wallace’s recently published My Life (1905): "Thanks for your card. I intended at first to give a longer account of Owen’s work, but was afraid it would be out of place. It is astonishing how many people have never heard of him; and very few indeed have read his own “Life” with its Supplementary Vol. of confirmatory Reports, Documents &c. I have been trying ever since I read it two years ago to get a copy but it is very rare. I wish the Fabians would reprint it, & I think Chapman & Hall would not object. Yours truly, A. R. Wallace." Wallace is referring here to British industrialist and social reformer Robert Owen (1771-1858), one of the founders of utopian socialism, whom Wallace discussed at length in My Life. In his note to Girdlestone Wallace mentions Owen’s Life of Robert Owen Written by Himself (1857-58), the second volume of which is subtitled “A supplementary appendix to the first volume . . . containing series of reports, addresses, memorials, and other documents referred to in that volume, 1808-1820” (no further volumes were published). “Fabians” refers to the Fabian Society, the influential British socialist organization (est. 1884) that founded Britain’s Labour Party and the London School of Economics. Wallace became a socialist in 1875, supporting land reform and other progressive causes; he also emulated Owen in embracing spiritualism in his later years.

        The Woggle-Bug Book

Reilly & Britton Co, Chicago 1905 - color illustrations (by Ike Morgan), 48p. Paper covered boards backed in green cloth. First state cover with background field in gray-green. 39cm. Corner reattached on front; the covers are otherwise intact but with some staining, spotting, wrinkling and other wear. A minor bit of gnawing on bottom edge and Contents generally sound although there are a few edge tears, a bit of soiling and some minor offsetting. The corner of the title-page is discolored where the corner of the cover had been detached. Now protected in a green cloth-covered clamshell box with a color photocopy of the title-page mounted on front. Woggle-Bugs apparently did not appear in any of the standard published Oz books. Their existence was revealed by Baum in "Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz, a weekly series of 27 stories that appeared in various Sunday newspapers in 1904 which were not collected and published as a book until 2009. Our book recounts the non-Oz adventures of Mr. H. M. Woggle-Bug after he becomes separated from his companions. See Bibliographia Oziana, by Greene and Hanff at pages 78-80 (in the Revised 1988 edition) for more about this book and detail as to how copies with this gray-green background field were established as the 1st State contrary to earlier thinking.         Eugenia

1905 - JOPLIN, Scott. Eugenia. Chicago: Will Rossiter, 1905. Quarto, original wrappers; pp. 8. $1800.First edition of the score for this popular rag.African-American composer Scott Joplin is the most prominent of the ragtime composers of the Missouri school, which flourished around 1900. After suffering a decline of popularity in the 1920s connected with the spread of recorded music-Ragtime’s popularity directly related to the ability of amateur musicians to purchase the sheet music and perform it at home-Ragtime was recognized in the second half of the 20th century as a supremely American musical form. “Ragtime now appears widely in concert programmes, film scores, and elsewhere in American life. This revival virtually took the form of a craze in the late 1960s and early 1970s and, before subsiding, had established ragtime in the view of music historians as the first clear fusion, and perhaps the most successful, of America’s salient musical features” (New Grove 15:539). Evidence of tape repair to wrapper spine, very light edgewear. Spine expertly repaired at fold. An extremely good copy. First editions of Scott’s piano solos are extremely scarce.
