LANZHOU, CHINA: Original Unsigned Ink Drawing Titled in Pencil on Verso:] . bei Lantschou.

1905 - Ca. 1905. Ink drawing on thick paper ca. 23x35,5 cm (9x14 in.). Recently matted, with some repair of marginal chipping and one repaired tear in margin, but overall in good condition. This well executed ink drawing shows a temple complex near Lanzhou. Lanzhou "is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in Northwest China." (Wikipedia). This ink drawing was created by an artist under Filchner's direction after a photograph made by Filchner enroute to Tibet on his 1903-5 "expedition to Tibet to carry out geomagnetic and topographical surveys on the high plateau. In addition to its scientific work the expedition carried out a significant intelligence-gathering role and was contemporaneous with similar missions by Francis Younghusband and others" (Howgego, 1850-1940 Polar Regions etc., F6).

        The Gorham Cocktail Book

Gorham Mfg Company New York (1905) - First Edition. Original limp tan leather, blindstamped at front cover, 5" by 3 1/2", 48 pages. Fabulous little volume of cocktail recipes, one of only two recipe books to include the Liberal Cocktail. Two recipes are food items: Clam Cocktail and the Oyster Cocktail. Three of them are drinks that are technically not cocktails: Chocolate Cocktail (a flip), Coffee Cocktail (flip), and the Soda Cocktail (a soft-drink). The other forty-five recipes are true cocktails. "No cobblers, Collinses, coolers, fixes, fizzes, highballs, juleps, punches or sours in it. The majority of today's so-called 'craft cocktails' (most of them actually sours or other short punches) would not have passed muster to get into the Gorham Cocktail Book." [Andrew Willett, Elemental Mixology] A lovely and scarce title. Very Good, front pastedown paper has mostly detached from inside cover, couple of 'drip' spots at covers.         Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?" in Annalen der Physik Band 18, No. 13, Heft 3, 1905, p. 639

FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S GROUNDBREAKING 1905 PAPER ANNOUNCING & EXPLAINING THE DERIVATION OF THE MOST FAMOUS EQUATION IN SCIENCE: E=mc2. FULL VOLUME WITH ORIGINAL WRAPS BOUND IN. No interior stamps; not ex-libris. Though by no means this simple, Einstein's here explores "the relationship between the loss of kinetic energy and the emission of radiation energy" and his equation "connects intangibility and tangibility and, by making them equivalent, joins them as one. Energy and mass are different and it is the speed of light that brings them together" (DSB IV, 323; Rigden, Einstein 1905, 117-118). 1905 is often referred to as Einstein's annus mirabilis, the year of miracles. This paper is one of a series of five "written and published within a few months of each other [and] represent[ing] one of the most astonishing outbursts of individual creativity in the history of science" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 16). Without question, this paper contains Einstein first mention of the equation E=mc2, but it is interesting to note that while the meaning remains exactly the same, what Einstein initially wrote is: "If a body gives off the energy L in the form of radiation, its mass diminishes by L/C²." In 1923 when an English translation was published, Einstein's contemporary notation was modified to conform to that used in the 1920s (for example, the L Einstein used to denote energy was changed to E). Einstein's 'm = L/c2' became 'E=mc2'. "Einstein first realized that such an equation was implied by his new theory of relativity almost immediately after he had published his 1905 paper that established the theory" (ibid). The relation between inertial mass and energy fascinated him, and in the summer of 1905, Einstein wrote to the mathematician Conrad Habicht: "One more consequence of the paper on electrodynamics has also occurred to me. The principle of relativity, in conjunction with Maxwell's equations, requires that mass be a direct measure of the energy contained in a body; light carries mass with it. A noticeable decrease of mass should occur in the case of radium. The argument is amusing and seductive, but for all I know the Lord might be laughing over it and leading me around by the nose" (Stachel, Einstein's Miraculous Year, 117-118). Einstein wasn't quite sure he believed himself, but he continued his thinking and soon published his formulation of mass-energy equivalence - the most famous equation in science. Einstein begins the paper, often called 'the September paper' "by referring to the June paper. The 'results of an electrodynamics investigation,' wrote Einstein, 'lead to a very interesting conclusion:'" that the kinetic energy of a body contributes to the mass or inertia of that body" (Rigden, Einstein 1905, 116). Einstein shows "that the equations of relativity worked out in his previous paper implied that if a particle emitted light beams, an observer in motion with respect to that body would naturally observe a loss of energy by the body (equal to E), but would also observe a change in its mass, according to the relation E=mc2" (An Einstein Encyclopedia, 2). As he often did, Einstein connected his theoretical results with ways to test them. "Einstein concludes this paper by suggesting a possible test to determine whether energy and mass were related as he predicted. The radioactive element radium had been discovered by Marie Curie seven years earlier, in 1898. Since an atom of radium gives off energy in its radioactive-decay process and since that energy might well come at the expense of mass, Einstein suggested that it might be possible to test his result 'using bodies whose energy content is variable to a high degree (e.g., salts of radium). "Einstein's final sentence in the September paper considers the practical outcome of his theory: 'If the theory agrees with the facts, then radiation transmits inertia [mass] between emitting and absorbing bodies'" (Rigden, 118). CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume complete with all original wraps and advertisements bound in. No library marks whatsoever. Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth. Annalen der Physik, Vierte Folge, Volume 18, viii, 1084 pages, including half-title. Complete with 8 plates. 8vo. The volume houses five issues and has been handsomely and simply rebound in brown cloth over marbled paper boards; tight and solid; gilt-lettered at the spine. With the exception of the front wrap of the Einstein paper which evidences toning and some wear (see scans), the volume and all of its issues are in near fine condition.

Original patterned paper wrappers preserved at rear. Woodcut border printed in green on first page of text, decorative woodcut initials in red and black, printer's device on final page, all by Lucien and Esther Pissarro. Housed in the original gold marbled cardboard slip-case."Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) was a bookbinder who produced tooled bindings of exceptional delicacy. De Sauty was active in London from approximately 1898 to 1923 and in Chicago from 1923 to 1935. His finest work is thought to be have been accomplished between 1905 and 1914. Many aspects of his life are poorly documented. For instance, scholars are unsure whether, when in London, de Sauty worked independently, for the firm of Riviére & Sons, or both. While in London, he may also have been a designer for the Hampstead Bindery and a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. When he lived in Chicago, de Sauty worked for the hand bindery of R. R. Donnelley & Sons. He signed his work at the foot of the front doublure, if present, and at the center of the bottom turn-in of the front upper board, if not. Works he produced in London are signed "de S" or "De Sauty." Works he produced in Chicago are signed with his employer's name, 'R. R. Donnelly'" (Harvard University Library)."Alfred de Sauty, the son of a distinguished engineer, worked for a year or two at Riviéres in the late 1890s and then set up on his own. He emigrated to Chicago before the first World War and subsequently managed the handwork bindery of R.R. Donnelly." (Nixon. Five Centuries of English Bookbinding, p.97).Note: Nixon and Harvard seem to disagree on when Alfred de Sauty left London for Chicago - Nixon states "He emigrated to Chicago before the first World War and subsequently managed the handwork bindery of R.R. Donnelly." whilst Harvard states [He] "was active in London from approximately 1898 to 1923 and in Chicago from 1923 to 1935"Operated between 1894 and World War I by the Pissarros, the Eragny Press produced charming books of the highest quality but in design unlike the other major private presses at work in England. The delicate colored wood engravings, the publisher's typical patterned paper bindings, and in general the inclination to be fresh and pretty rather than elegant, grand, or luxuriant gave this press a distinctive place in the movement. Lucien, who studied art under his father, the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, came to England hoping to get his woodcuts published and searching for an opportunity to make lovely books, two goals that were accomplished with the help of Charles Ricketts, the founder of the Vale Press, who shared his newly created Vale Type with Pissarro. Cave says that the Eragny Press books "had a charm and freshness quite unlike anything to be found in the work of any other private press, and in the printing of colored wood engravings in particular the press excelled." It is not surprising that Cave uses as his illustration to demonstrate this assertion the frontispiece of the lute player that appears in the present book. Genz.         Autograph letter signed "Humperdinck" to Rainer Simons

4 pp. on one bifolium. Octavo. Dated Venice, June 10, 1905. In black ink. On stationery of the "Hôtel Restaurant Cavalletto Venise Serantoni Barbieri Propriétaires," with imprint in dark blue and with vignettes illustrating the hotel in dark olive green ink. In German (with translation). Humperdinck responds to a letter from Simons, author of the libretto for the opera Das Wunder von Köln [The miracle of Cologne]. Humperdinck had begun setting the libretto, but newspapers then leaked a rumor of the opera, prompting Humperdinck to stop work on the project; Simons's letter has rekindled Humperdinck?'s interest, and the composer agrees to meet Simons on his way back to Berlin. "...Your original proposal appealed to me from the beginning... especially because... [it] allows me to disregard all business obligations and to devote myself to purely artistic, creative work, heedless of baggage, just as it was the case twelve years ago with my Hänsel und Gretel. Back then I did not know yet what agents, publishers, and theater directors were like, let alone the public, which then did not even exist for me, the naïve homo novus. Happy times! In this joyful mood I already had begun to work in spring, when that stupid newspaper note appeared declaring that I composed Das Wunder von Köln... I was showered with inquiries and the like, and the pleasant incognito work I had been looking forward to so much was over... And... in early May... Fräulein Ebeling, the author of my Dornröschen [The sleeping beauty], suddenly died, whereby I... acquired full ownership of the piece, which I had wanted to rework into an opera earlier already... I have to confess that this plan... had kept going through my mind repeatedly during our trip... but equally happily I confess that your letter has changed my mind again... Meanwhile, I want to ask you kindly to think a bit about a new title because the old one, thanks to the newspapers, has become almost loathsome to me. ...The title you have chosen... also... evokes associations with ideas that have nothing to do with the piece, with legendary ideas such as the Three Kings [Magi] or Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins... Whether we will come [to you]... by way of Achen Lake or by way of Rosenheim will only depend on whether we will make a detour to the Salzkammergut beforehand..." Slightly worn; partially split at folds, with one small repair; small circular file hole to upper blank margin. . A highly interesting letter relative to Engelbert Humperdinck's unrealized opera Das Wunder von Köln (The miracle of Cologne) to a libretto by his former student Rainer Simons (1869-1934), founder and first director of the Vienna Volksoper (since 1903). Humperdinck never completed either Das Wunder von Köln or any other opera to a libretto by Simons; it remains unknown how and when the project failed (see the anonymous satire in the semimonthly magazine Der Kunstwart, second issue of November 1905, p. 227). The reference to the Three Kings is actually to their shrine at Cologne Cathedral. Saint Ursula is supposed to have suffered her martyrdom in Cologne.
