Du?an Jurkovic (August 23, 1868 - December 21, 1947) was a Slovak architect, ethnographer and artist. One of the best-known promoters of Slovak art in 20th century Czechoslovakia, he is remembered mostly due to his projects of numerous World War I cemeteries in Galicia. Jurkovic was born on 23 August 1886 in Turá Lúka (then Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Slovakia), to two local folk artists. He graduated from a local school in Sopron and moved to Vienna, where between 1884 and 1889 he studied at the National School of Industry under Camillo Sitte. He briefly worked in Martin, where he became fascinated with folk carpenters and their works in wood. Then he moved to Vsetín (eastern Moravia), where he continued his studies at the atelier of Michal Urbánek. Together with his bureau he co-authored the buildings of the 1895 Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague and also authored numerous other buildings in Bohemia. In 1899 he moved to Brno, where he designed his own house and a new lodging house for the local school. During his stay in Brno he became friends with local Czech writers Jirí Mahen, Mr?tík brothers and Josef Merhaut. Among his best-known designs realized in Brno was a villa in ?abovresky, combining local folk art with the state-of-the-art modernist trends of Vienna. He also authored the design of the Society of Friends of Arts building, a distant cousin to Viennese Wiener Werkstätte and the geometric school. He also prepared a project of reconstruction of the castle in Nové Mesto nad Metují. Mobilized by the Austro-Hungarian Army during the World War I, he became one of the most notable members of the War Graves Unit. He authored approximately 35 war cemeteries near Nowy Zmigród in Galicia (now Poland), most of them heavily influenced by local Lemko (Rusyn) folk art and carpentry. After the war he returned to newly founded Czechoslovakia and settled in Bratislava. Among the best known of his later works is the tombs of Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Milan Rastislav ?tefánik, monument to Slovak National Uprising, and the cable car station at Lomnický ?tít in the High Tatras mountains. He died on 21 December 1947. (Wikipedia). KEYWORDS:arts/architecture/slowakia/tsechie/photo.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1905. The Story of a Simple Soul. Octavo. Original green cloth, decoration to front board in blind, titles to front board and spine gilt, top edge gilt. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Extremities gently rubbed, light foxing to endpapers, text block strained in a couple of places but holding. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, secondary state of the ads dated 10.10.05. Presentation copy inscribed by Wells on the half title: "To F. M. Hueffer with affection from H. G. Wells". A superb association linking two of the heaviest hitters of Edwardian fiction. Hueffer ? an American by birth who changed his name during the War to the less Teutonic sounding Ford Madox Ford ? was part of the coterie that included Conrad, James and Galsworthy, a group among whom a kind of grudging respect and qualified friendship developed. Hueffer would later publish several of Wells's pieces in The English Review, the editorship of which he undertook in 1908. Unusually for friendships involving Wells, there seems never to have been a great falling out and some genuine esteem appears to have existed between the two.

Chess Lyrics: A Collection of Chess Problems

New York: J. H. Graham, 1905 xciv+476 with frontispiece, portrait plate and diagrams. Thick octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in half leather with six raised spine bands with gilt lettering in brown spine label over marbled boards. Edited by Alain c White. (Betts: 33-55) First edition of White's first Christmas book.In his introductory essay, "Some thoughts on problem Matters," the author first gives an account of his own career in problem composition, with examples of his work; he goes on to deal with aspects of problem construction, including such subjects as purity, complexity of two-movers compared with three-movers, duals, adjudication, coincidences, resemblances, originality, etc. there follow 282 of his composition, with solutions and notes by various composers.Composer of Scottish descent, schoolteacher in Jamaica. Composed orthodox Two- and Three-movers. In 1880-1 he first competed in an international tournament for chess problems; he won third prize in the Burnley Express problem tournament. Over the years he won some 200 prizes for chess problems, and quickly established a reputation as one of the most outstanding composers of chess problems in the world. In 1887 he published a book, Chess: Its Poetry and Its Prose, under the patronage of distinguished men, such as the Bishop of Jamaica, and the Governor, and the British politicians Lord Randolph Churchill and Sir Robert Peel. The book dealt with the basics of chess and with the art of the chess problem. He lost his sight in early 1896, and after a period of despair he found that he still could compose. Then he begun to move away from the conventional style of his time. Mackenzie said this about composing blind: "I have lately come to think that problem composition is peculiarly a mental work, and that employment of board and men is in many ways a nuisance. ... Certainly the three-movers I composed since losing my sight are infinitely superior, as a whole, to those composed before."Condition:Attractively bound in quarter leather, some occasional internal soiling, lacks White's Christmas greetings else a very nice copy of on of the scarcer Christmas series.

8vo. 2 volumes. Bound in full tree-calf by T. Hunt of Wellington College, decorative gilt border with the Wellington College crest to the upper board, spine in 6 compartments with five raised bands and red leather label, gilt decorations, marbled edges and endpapers; photographic frontispiece to each volume, numerous illustrations, maps and sketches; fine; provenance: with the bookplates of General Sir Richard Edward Worsley pasted to each ffep. First edition. General Sir Ian Hamilton (1853 - 1947) is best remembered for commanding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the Battle of Gallipoli, a disastrous campaign that resulted in him being relieved of his command. The notes for this book were taken between 1904 and 1905 when Hamilton served as the military attaché of the Indian Army serving with the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War. A Staff Officer's Scrap-Book gained wide acclaim, cited by Britannica as "a book which by reason of the interest of its subject, the charm of the author?s style, and the combination of war experience and of imagination which inspired his judgments and criticisms, at once took rank in Europe as a modern military classic."

History of the Champagne Trade in England.

8vo., original red cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper board. Spine darkened with a couple of spots, some fading to boards, small repaired split to top of upper joint, some foxing most noteably to first and last few leaves. First edition of Simon's first book. Andre Simon was a wine connoisseur, historian, importer and author. Born in Paris, he came to London at the age of 25 as the English agent for the champagne house of Pommery and Greno and remained in Britain for the rest of his life. Shortly after arriving Simon embarked upon his first book The History of the Champagne Trade in England. "Simon's English prose style: [is] unmistakably charming, stately and faintly whimsical at once."(High Johnson, Oxford Wine Companion). This was to be the first of over 100 books and pamphlets penned by Simon on wine and food. This copy is inscribed by Simon on the front-free endpaper. "With the author's compliments Andre L Simon 11.12.08." A final line of the inscription below this has been inked out. Also with the ownership name of wine merchant R Denny above the inscription. With a 1934 newspaper clipping on front pastedown.
