Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 19. II. 1905.

1905. 1 S. 4to.

[Alaska], 1905. 90 black and white photos measuring mostly 7 x 5 inches, mounted to the leaves of the album. Oblong 8vo. Covers off, some photos scuffed, water stains, pieces missing. 90 black and white photos measuring mostly 7 x 5 inches, mounted to the leaves of the album. Oblong 8vo. A collection of photos including images of the U.S. Revenue Cutter (USRC) Manning and her crew. Designed as a cruising cutter for the Revenue Cutter Service, the Manning was commissioned on 8 January, 1898. After service with the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American War, the Manning returned to revenue cutter service and was assigned to the Bering Sea Patrol from 1900-1916. During the 1905 Bering Sea cruise, the crew of the Manning distributed boxes of clothing to natives of Attu and Atka that were provided by the Women's National Relief Association and some photos may possibly be from that cruise. Native-Alaskan images include 7 photos of women weaving several styles of baskets (3 of these images are taken outside and show the exterior of Barabaras, the oblong, semi-subterranean, sod-covered dwellings used by the Aleut tribe, while one of these images shows the interior of a Barabara); 7 images of individual, groupings, and close-ups of finshed baskets; 2 photos of Aleutian Islanders listening to a phonograph (apparently for the first time); and 2 images of Aleut children and an adult outside of a Barabara. Images of the Manning and her crew include the ship at dock; the Manning's six-member racing crew rowing in the harbor; the full crew on deck, in dress uniform; interior images of the ship, a group photo of seven officers in uniform; and the enlisted crew exercising on a dock. Other photos include snow-capped mountains, rock formations and other natural scenery, plants, and flowers. WH/2/

        Autograph letter signed. Falun, 25. I. 1905.

1905. 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. To her translator, Marie "Mizi" Franzos (1870-1941), about translating the writer's stories into German: "The thing you ask about on page 199 of En fallen Kung ['A Fallen King'], 'Klippte Klarskinn', you can certainly skip over. I am sure it is not to be found in Germany. But in Sweden they used to, and indeed still do, put dried fish skin in boiling coffee to get it clear and beautifully brown. It was called Klarskinn ['clearskin'] and cut into small pieces. I believe that ‚Who has inspired you, woman' is to be found in the Bible, but it is so long since I wrote it that I have forgotten where. Perhaps it is in the Gospels, but I cannot say for certain. Again, krytfjärdingar [‚gunpowder firkins'] in ‚Uncle Ruben' means ‚wooden casks' filled with gunpowder. People here used formerly a little container made like casks, but much much smaller, to keep gunpowder in. You can translate it by whatever is used to keep gunpowder in with you. I am afraid I have nothing to send for Deutsche Rundschau [...]" (transl. from the Swedish original; Swedish text available upon request). - "Mizi" Franzos translated for the famous publisher Albert Langen of Munich. Bard, Marquardt & Co. of Berlin had recently begun a series of illustrated cameos, delightfully produced in an art-nouveau format, and entitled "Die Literatur". No. 7 on Selma Lagerlöf is by Oskar Levertin, and was translated from the Swedish by "Francis Maro", Franzos's alias. Lagerlöf, he says, is "the most astonishing literary anomaly I know", renewing formst hat were long thought buried, "a resurrection that has gripped the hearts of all".

"Sonnez les Matines" - Autograph Musical Manuscript

1905. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Signed autograph musical manuscript of a song for voice and orchesta, "Sonnez les Matines," by the French composer of opera and song whose work was admired by Debussy and Fauré. The song, for one singer and an orchestration of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, timpani, harp, and strings, begins with the text "Pourquoi ne me bercez-vous plus..." 86 measures in A major, written in black ink on 24-staff Lard-Esnault (ed. Bellamy) manuscript paper. Corrections have been made by scraping and rewriting on three pages. The title page, with Hüe's signature, is written in blue pencil, and page numbers and rehearsal numbers have also been added in blue pencil. This manuscript was apparently used by the conductor; the song was included in Hüe's collection Jeunes Chansons sur de vieux airs (1905), with piano accompaniment. 15 pp. Toning to the cover and title page; slight edge wear and small tears to the spine, but overall in fine condition. 10.75 x 14 inches (27.5 x 35.5 cm)."Born into a celebrated family of architects, [Hüe] was encouraged by Gounod and later studied counterpoint with Paladilhe and the organ with Franck. In 1879 he won the Prix de Rome with a cantata, Médée, and two years later won acclaim for his comic opera, Les pantins ('The Jumping-Jacks'). Vocal music was to form the core of his output... Hüe produced songs continually throughout his life. The earliest are firmly grounded in the salon tradition, while the later songs use a more developed musical language to respond to his chosen texts: Edith au col de cygne, for example, uses bars of uneven length. Between 1910 and 1920 his harmonic language advanced considerably, absorbing the added-note harmonies and static effects of the Impressionists, while remaining essentially traditional."         SOME ENGLISH GARDENS After Drawings by George S. Elgood, R.I.

London Longmans, Green and Co. 1905 - Third issuance, one year after the first and in the identical format in all ways. With 50 beautiful colour plates after watercolours by Elgood. Folio, in original polished blue buckram, the spine and upper cover lettered and ruled in gilt, t.e.g. xii, 131 pp. A very handsome copy, the cloth bright with very little evidence of age or wear, the corners still quite sharp, the gilt fresh, internally clean and quite fresh throughout with a bit of toning to the endpapers as is the case in nearly all of the early printings. AN IMPORTANT BOOK, AND A VERY BEAUTIFUL ONE TOO. A horticultural tour through Edwardian England, with notes by the preeminent Ms. Jekyll, who has been described as a premier influence in garden design by English and American gardening enthusiasts. She created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, and wrote over 1,000 articles for magazines such as 'Country Life' and 'The Garden'. The book is equally well know for the wonderfully reproduced garden paintings by George Elgood, a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Coloursand the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. This is by far one of the most famous, and beautiful, works of the gardening genre. The first edition has become quite difficult to find, this edition, formatted identically, is every bit as impressive. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This volume also contains an excellent chapter on 'Books on Big Game' in which Roosevelt reveals his admiration for two other giants among deer hunters: Judge Caton and T.S. Van Dyke" (Wegner, 234).

DONT TELL. NEW NURSERY RHYMES [Written by G.E. Farrow and others. Pictured by John Hassall]

Alf Cooke Ltd. / Frederick A. Stokes Cmpany, Leeds & London / New York 1905 - 4to. (28 cm.) unpaged [52p.]. Profusely illustrated by John Hassall with 19 full-color plates (most also full-page), several smaller full-color drawings, as well as other drawings. Pictorial endpapers. Half-cloth with green paper over beveled boards and with a red cloth spine, with title and author in grey and with two full-color vignettes on the front cover of a child dressed up as a soldier holding a gun and a dog with an apple on his head sitting on a drum (obviously meant to suggest the William Tell story!) and with a vignette in full color on the rear cover which continues the ¿story¿ from the front cover, but here shows the gun smoking behind a drum with the drumhead split open, the dog¿s head protruding through the split and the apple lying on the ground! Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through¿not even close¿and with a bright red spine, with a thumb-sized flecked area above the dog¿s head on the front cover (can¿t quite tell whether this is a defect or not!), paper on boards clean, colors bright, just hints of foxing here and there in the interior, all internal images in fine condition with bright and sharp colors and with no internal markings. No dust jacket. This book is in extraordinarily good condition, especially given its age and the fact that it has paper-covered beveled boards. George Edward Farrow [1862?-1919?] was a noted British author of children¿s books, but not much is known about his life, including his exact dates. Farrow wrote more than thirty books for children and is best known for his nonsense books written in the tradition of Lewis Carroll¿s Alice¿s Adventures in Wonderland, especially his Wallypug series, e.g., The Wallyplug of Why (1895), Adventures in Wallypugland (1898), In Search of the Wallypug (1903), etc. John Hassall [1868-1948] was an English illustrator known for his poster art. In 1895 he began working as an advertising artist for David Allen & Sons and, in a career of more than 50 years, produced some 600 theatre poster designs, as well as illustrations for several illustrated newspapers. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of Miniature Painters and the London Sketch Club. In 1900, Hassall opened his own New Art School and School of Poster Design in Kensington, which trained several noted artists and illustrators. His style, which used flat colors enclosed by thick black lines, was also suitable for illustrations in children¿s books. Some of his best work can be seen in Barbara's Song Book (1900), in his humorous alphabets such as An ABC of Everyday People (1903) and Round the World ABC (1904), both by G. E. Farrow, and in his books of nursery stories and rhymes published by Blackie. He also produced a large number of pictorial binding designs, notably for G. A. Henty's novels. Dont Tell. New Nursery Rhymes is very much in the style of Round the World ABC and is a wonderfully illustrated book. Date taken from OCLC record, which shows Yale as the only holding library in the U.S. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Daniel, original bevel-edged pictorial green cloth, front panel stamped in black, white and gold, spine panel stamped in black and gold, t.e.g., white endpapers with floral pattern printed in green. First edition. "Boys' lost race adventure novel set in the Pacific which introduces an amphibious race with webbed feet." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 23. "Ancient races and strange beasts in an unknown land mass in the South Pacific. One race is human, the other is amphibious with webbed feet. This is the author's lest known fantastic novel, yet among his most imaginative, a civilization of immemorial age having for eons been removed from the world in weed-enclosed lands of the South Pacific. Legends of the Toraylians link them to South America and once a giant continent in the Pacific. Their slaves had long since evolved into web-footed frogmen." - Teitler and Locke, By the World Forgot (2013) 63. Bleiler (1978), p. 11. Reginald 00630. Cloth lightly worn at edges, several stains to rear cover, scattered foxing throughout, a sound, good copy. Considered by many to be the author's rarest book.

Photographs of Alaska]

[Alaska] 1905 - 90 black and white photos measuring mostly 7 x 5 inches, mounted to the leaves of the album. Oblong 8vo. A collection of photos including images of the U.S. Revenue Cutter (USRC) Manning and her crew. Designed as a cruising cutter for the Revenue Cutter Service, the Manning was commissioned on 8 January, 1898. Native-Alaskan images include 7 photos of women weaving several styles of baskets (3 of these images are taken outside and show the exterior of Barabaras, the oblong, semi-subterranean, sod-covered dwellings used by the Aleut tribe, while one of these images shows the interior of a Barabara); 7 images of individual, groupings, and close-ups of finshed baskets; 2 photos of Aleutian Islanders listening to a phonograph (apparently for the first time); and 2 images of Aleut children and an adult outside of a Barabara.Images of the Manning and her crew include the ship at dock; the Manning's six-member racing crew rowing in the harbor; the full crew on deck, in dress uniform; interior images of the ship, a group photo of seven officers in uniform; and the enlisted crew exercising on a dock.         Autograph Letter Signed as King, to Crown Prince Wilhelm ('My Dear Willy.')

1905 - 8vo, Marienbad, 5 September 1905, 3pp., on royal monogrammed paper, creased across centre resulting from previous fold. Lamenting that Wilhelm has been forbidden by his father, the last German emperor Wilhelm II, from visiting him at Windsor (".unhappily your papa objects to your going away to England this year.") and expressing regret that he is unable to renew his acquaintance with Wilhelm's new wife Cecile. Edward VII was renowned for his diplomatic skills, the French referring to him as 'the Peacemaker'; but his relations with his nephew, the Kaiser, were strained. It is interesting to see in this letter to the Kaiser's eldest son, the Crown Prince, that although an adult, married and shortly to become a father he was still forbidden to visit his great uncle in England. The Kaiser was notoriously difficult, tactless and irascible, traits that ultimately led to the catastrophic First World War and his forced abdication.

        Unser Programm. [Our Programme].

Vienna Zion 1905 - Octavo, (23 x 16.4 cm); 16 leaves; original paper wrapper, browned, printed on both sides. Spine rubbed, pages in pristine condition. Signed by the author. Text in German. Important Zionist pamphlet, inscribed by Ussischkin on the title page. Menachem Ussishkin (1863-1941) was a Russian-born Zionist leader and head of the Jewish National Fund. He was born in Dubrouna in the Belarusian part of the Russian Empire. In 1989, he graduated as a technical engineer from Moscow Technological Institute. Ussishkin was among the founders of the BILU movement and the Moscow branch of the Hovevei Zion. He also joined the Bnei Moshe society founded by Echad HaAm. In 1891 he made his first trip to Palestine. He served as the Secretary of the First Zionist Congress. At the Sixth Zionist Congress he opposed the Uganda plan. He was one of the Jewish delegates to the Paris peace conference after World War I. In 1919, Ussishkin made aliyah to Palestine. In 1920 he was appointed head of the Zionist Commission in Palestine. In this pamphlet, he advocates group settlement based on labour Zionism. Under his influence the Zionist movement actively supported the establishment of agricultural settlement, educational and cultural institutions, and a Jewish polytechnic - later known as the Technion. In 1923 he was elected President of the Jewish National Fund (J.N.F.), which he headed until his death. Ussishkin was behind major land acquisitions in the Hefer, Jezreel and Beit She'an valleys. He died in 1941 in Jerusalem at the age of 78. He is buried in Nicanor's Cave at the botanical gardens of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Mount Scopus. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Russian Gold Book

St. Petersburg, 1905. 14-carat pendant in the form of a hinged book containing three leaves with fine engraving work. The text begins with a plaintive song which was apparently popular in the salons of pre-Revolutionary Russia, and which closes with the line "Farewell, my invaluable friend/ Do not forget me." This is followed by a poem about a late-blooming rose that dies. The selection closes with the aria from "The Demon" by Nikolai Rubenstein, the translation of which is "Forgive me heavenly creature that I disturbed your peace." These texts, together with the endearing diminutive used by the writer in addressing the recipient in the poem -- calling her Muroschka, or my little kitten -- suggests that this was created to commemorate some sort of liaison between members of the Russian aristocracy. Accompanying the delicate engraved script are the musical staves and three floral vignettes, all of which exhibit an accomplish artisan's level of skill. The covers are bejeweled, as follows: The upper cover is a masterwork of filigree work, with what appears to be a double "M" monogram in the center; on the rear is an engraved musical stave flanked by a lily of the valley rendered in diamonds, and a forget-me-not in turquoise. The pendant loop at the spine head is hallmarked, which indicates the location and approximate date. The extremely high level of craftsmanship evident in this piece evokes the work of Fabergé, although it is not signed as such. Whether it is the master's shop or not, this piece is an accurate reflection of the art of jewelry-making in Imperial Russia. A stunning object, housed in an elaborate black and purple morocco tray case. (2 3/4 by 1 1/4; 45 x 31mm).
