Dream-Come-True (Poems by Laurence Binyon/Eragny Press)

Eragny Press, London 1905 - Eragny Press, London, 1905. First and limited edition of 175 copies on paper. Book condition: very good. Original boards with daisy repeated pattern in green lightly soiled. Endpapers toned otherwise very clean internally. The woodcut frontispiece was designed by Laurence Binyon, borders and initials are by Lucien Pissaro. Loosely inserted tissue guard to limitation page at rear. There is a pencil note to the rear pastedown that this book was lent to an Exhibition in Copenhagen in Autumn 1932. Loose bookplate of Ken Tomlinson to front pastedown. No jacket. This volume came from the collection of private press books built up by the Tomkinson family. Michael Tomkinson (1841 - 1921) established Tomkinson Carpets in Kidderminster and was a major collector of books and Japanese antiquities. Although some of his collection was sold after his death his son, Geoffrey (1881 - 1963), continued and grew the private press collection and published 'A Select Bibliography of the Principal Modern Presses Public and Private in Great Britain and Ireland' (1928). When Geoffrey died in 1963 his son Kenneth (1918 - 1985) continued to add to two generations of Tomkinson family private press books. This collection was recently broken up and sold. Laurence Binyon (1869 - 1943) is of course best remembered for his poem 'For the Fallen' a verse of which is often used at Remembrance Day services. This small volume contains 16 poems by Binyon. In addition to his poetry, Binyon was a dramatist and a highly respected art scholar. This is a rare book in very good condition with an interesting provenance. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Principles of Economics A Fragment of a Treatise on the Industrial Mechanism of Society and Other Papers. With a Preface by Henry Higgs.

London Macmillan and Co., Limited 1905 - First Edition, Published Posthumously JEVONS, W. Stanley. The Principles of Economics. A Fragment of a Treatise on the Industrial Mechanism of Society and Other Papers. With a Preface by Henry Higgs. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1905. First edition. Octavo (8 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 219 x 140 mm). xxviii, [1]-273, [1, blank], [2, publisher's advertisements] pp. Publisher's full brick cloth. Boards ruled in blind. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Partially unopened. Previous owner's name twice on front free endpaper, and once of title-page, not affecting text. Another previous owner's signature has been extracted from the front free endpaper, leaving a 2 1/2 -inch hole. Corner's a bit bumped. Spine slightly darkened with gilt a bit rubbed. Some light foxing to endpapers. Overall a very good copy. William Stanley Jevons, (1835–1882), was a British economist and philosopher of science. "He planned a Principles of Economics to supplement his Theory of Political Economy; significantly, he gave it the subtitle ‘A treatise on the industrial mechanism of society’. By 1882 he had sketched out its contents and drafted a number of chapters, but was still preoccupied with the completion of papers more urgently required—such as one for that year's social science congress, on the employment of married women in factories—and still trying to do more than his weakened health would allow. On 13 August he unwisely decided to go swimming, apparently suffered a heart attack brought on by the shock of the unusually cold sea, and drowned. He was buried five days later in Hampstead cemetery. It was left to his widow and his friends to collect the published and unpublished papers Jevons had left behind and to issue them in a series of volumes: Methods of Social Reform (1883), Investigations in Currency and Finance (1884), Pure Logic and other Minor Works (1890), and The Principles of Economics (1905)."

Wildschwein bzw. - Unterschiedlich fleckig. Vereinzelte Knickspuren. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Franz Joseph I., Kaiser von Österreich, Menuekarte, Menuekarten, Speisekarte, Speisekarten, historische, antike, Habsburger, Österreichisches Kaiserhaus, Monarchie

        Tuskegee & Its People

1905 - WASHINGTON, Booker T. Tuskegee & Its People: Their Ideals and Achievements. New York: D. Appleton, 1905. Octavo, original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth. $1900.First edition of an important work on Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Institute, expressing his goal "to write a history of the individual yearnings for the light of knowledge""a scarce copy containing the publisher's tipped-in leaf printed, "Compliments of Booker T. Washington""with essays by Washington, leaders of the school and graduates, along with frontispiece portrait of Washington and 23 full-page illustrations.Washington, the Wizard of Tuskegee, was the "most dominant figure in African American society" when Tuskegee & Its People appeared (Verney, Art of the Possible, 111). Famed for his 1895 Atlanta "Compromise" Speech and an approach to African American education that highlighted vocational training over academics, Washington is often contrasted to W.E.B. Du Bois. Yet many see a rupture between Washington's public stance and his school's actual history. "From its early days, Tuskegee offered a broad curriculum, not unlike that found in high schools for white students at the time". The academic curriculum of Tuskegee was not promoted publicly""as was the vocational program""and flew under the radar so to speak" (Morowski in American Educational History Journal). When Tuskegee & Its People appeared, most secondary schools in the South were whites only and the 1896 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Plessy v Ferguson had fiercely institutionalized segregation. To many, a fresh analysis of this major work might "better decipher Washington's place in African American history". the validity of his so-called grassroots leadership style, the realities of students' experiences at Tuskegee, and the overall complexity and multidimensional nature of his leadership" (Dagbovie, African American History Reconsidered, 152). Washington secretly supported a number of civil rights causes and "never said that American minorities would forever forgo the right to vote, to gain a full education, or to enjoy the fruits of an integrated society. But he strategically chose not to force the issue in the face of the overwhelming white hostility that was the reality of American race relations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries" (ANB). One of an undetermined number with a tipped-in leaf printed; "Compliments of Booker T. Washington, Principal Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama." Edited by Washington with his extensive introduction, containing five essays from leaders in the school's staff, including his wife, Margaret Murray Washington, and 17 essays from Tuskegee graduates, along with 24 full-page illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of Washington. Without rarely found dust jacket. Penciled inscription in a secretarial hand or from the publisher, to "R. Henry W. Dwight from the Author. 1905." The recipient is likely R. Henry W. Dwight, a descendant of the New England Dwight family, whose members served in the U.S. Congress and whose legacy reaches back to the American Revolution. The R. Henry W. Dwight collection of his family's history is housed in the Norman Rockwell Museum Archives. Tiny bit of marginalia to one leaf of the introduction.Interior fine, only lightest edge-wear to bright gilt-stamped cloth. A very handsome about-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, Limited, 1905. 2 volumes. First edition. Beautifully decorated with many illustrations, maps and battle diagrams. Large 8vo, publisher’s original ribbed navy-blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, t.e.g. ix, 423; 437, index pp. A very good and handsome set, bindings and textblocks clean, hinges strong and tight, just some mellowing to the cloth and light evidence of age but in all very well preserved. FIRST EDITION IN HANDSOME CONDITION. In this work, as well as through its predecessor entitled THE INFLUENCE OF SEA POWER UPON HISTORY, 1660-1783, Mahan demonstrates the considerable ties between naval warfare and the history of the modern world. He was one of the first historians ever to seriously examine this correlation. This treatise had a lasting influence upon American military thought, helping to convince our leaders that a strong navy was a necessity (as it subsequently proved to be, in two world wars).

The Months of Japanese Children for 1906

Tokyo: T. Hasegawa, 1905. First Edition. Ribbon tie on corner. . Very Good. Scarce Hasegawa crepe paper juvenile calendar book, with no copies located on OCLC First Search and not in Sharf. 13.5 cm square. 7 leaves of crepe paper, or 14 pp. Bright colored illustrations on every page, depicting with each month generally with some quintessential activity or venue loosely associated with the time of year: New Year's Holidays, preparing for examinations, spring vacation, school girl's exercise, the Festival of Flags, gold fish, a rice field, morning-glories for sale, insect hunting, a fishing boat, autumnal tints at Uyeno Park and imitating needle work.         The STEWART PATENT (CUT GEAR) HORSE CLIPPER. A Small Investment and Big Returns. CLIP YOUR HORSES

[Chicago]: [Chicago Flexible Shaft Company], (n. d.). Circa 1905. Thin offwhite paper printed in black and red. Fold lines; occasional creasing, minor soil and loss to edges, not interfering with text. Slightly rough left edge, suggesting the sheet may have been a fold-out advertisement in another publication at some point. About VG.. Broadsheet, printed recto and verso. B/w engravings, b/w/red center illustration to recto. 36" x 23-3/4" An extraordinary piece of promotional literature for the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, specialists in sheep-shearing and horse clipping equipment. The recto features a full-sheet ad for the company's 1902 Chicago Clipper, a hand-cranked version designed for individual use, while the verso offers two commercial versions (one ceiling-mounted, one electric) as well as a half-sheet advertisement for Clark Carriage Heaters, a coal-burning personal foot heater designed for use in automobiles. The ad on the recto in particular stresses the health benefits of clipping for horses as well as their owners, albeit in rather awkward prose and printing composition: "It's Taking Cold being put to bed in a nasty sweat that kills a horse. All Sorts of Pneumonia, Rheumatism and worse: Besides, Clipping saves three fourths of your currying and you can do it at least twice as thoroughly.....That opens up the pores and Saves the Kidneys from overwork and disease." The high quality of the materials and the ease of operation also recieve extravagant praise: the machine is guaranteed for six years because "[w]e can afford to, for it's perfect" and is so easy to use that "A Child can turn the crank and not tire." John K. Stewart ultimately held over 80 patents, and the Stewart speedometer was used in the first Model Ts. In 1910 the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. expanded into the home appliance market with an electric iron, under the brand name Sunbeam, which became a premier manufacturer of appliances; the company formally renamed itself Sunbeam Corporation in 1946, and is still in operation today. Rare. We find no copies on OCLC nor any in the trade.

Dick, a founding director of the Edison Ore Milling Syndicate and by 1905, the foreign agent promoting Edison's battery in Europe. Edison informs Dick that as he has established battery production facilities in Germany, England, and France, as well as in America, the company should be able to meet demand throughout the world: "[...] I would undoubtedly be able to make more satisfactory terms for handling this business than any one else, and since you are largely interested in all of the three main foreign companies, you would of course benefit by any additional business that such companies might do in other countries outside of their own territories. Therefore [...] I will be obliged if you will sign the subscribed consent, agreeing that all future negotiations for foreign countries shall be left entirely to me [...]". - Duly countersigned by Dick and a witness.       New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., Inc., 1905. : , 1905. Hardcover first edition - The very uncommon first issue with Chesnutt's name misspelled on both the front cover and the spine; this error was caught by Chesnutt when a sample was sent to him at the beginning of July, and he was assured by the publisher on July 5th that 'not a great number' had been bound thus. This novel, the last to be published during his lifetime (and published just 6 years after his first book) was a commercial failure. 294 pages. Very good condition in red cloth with gold lettering on the front cover and spine: a gift inscription on the front endpaper, lower corners slightly bumped and some slight spine slant - but overall a very attractive copy, with little soiling to the covers, bright lettering, and clean, flexible pages. .

Collection of Commemorative Japanese Military Propaganda Postcards

Group of 80 colorful pictorial postcards (3 duplicates), celebrating the Imperial Navy and the naval air force during the Meiji, Taish , and early Sh wa periods in Japan, often depicting specific war heroes or leaders along with particular ship and/or airplane models, many with traditional Japanese floral and geometric motifs and background decoration, unused. Beautifully illustrated. Each approx. 3-1/2" x 5-1/2". Loose as issued, housed in a modern album. Various cities (Japan) n.d. (circa 1905-1935). The Meiji period in Japan, which lasted from 1868 to 1912, was the time when Japanese society switched from an isolated feudal society to a more modern one, with fundamental changes to its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations. It was followed by the Taish period, which lasted until 1926, and is considered a more liberal time when political power shifted from the elder statesmen to the National Diet legislature and the democratic parties. The start of the Sh wa period was marked by a move into political totalitarianism, ultranationalism, and fascism, culminating in Japan's invasion of China in 1937. During this period, there was an increase in militarism and isolationism as Japanese power grew in Asia, and by the time of the invasion, Japan's navy was the third largest in the world. These postcards are a symbol of modernity, consumerism, mass production, commercial art, and an advertisement for the national culture of Japan.
