Typed letter signed ("Thos A. Edison"). No place, 16. I. 1905.

1905. 4to. 3 pp. Matted and framed. An agreement regarding battery production throughout the world. To Herman E. Dick, a founding director of the Edison Ore Milling Syndicate and by 1905, the foreign agent promoting Edison's battery in Europe. Edison informs Dick that as he has established battery production facilities in Germany, England, and France, as well as in America, the company should be able to meet demand throughout the world: "[...] I would undoubtedly be able to make more satisfactory terms for handling this business than any one else, and since you are largely interested in all of the three main foreign companies, you would of course benefit by any additional business that such companies might do in other countries outside of their own territories. Therefore [...] I will be obliged if you will sign the subscribed consent, agreeing that all future negotiations for foreign countries shall be left entirely to me [...]". - Duly countersigned by Dick and a witness. Leaves creased and moderately toned; perforation at upper left corner of each leaf.

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., Inc., 1905. : , 1905. Hardcover first edition - The very uncommon first issue with Chesnutt's name misspelled on both the front cover and the spine; this error was caught by Chesnutt when a sample was sent to him at the beginning of July, and he was assured by the publisher on July 5th that 'not a great number' had been bound thus. This novel, the last to be published during his lifetime (and published just 6 years after his first book) was a commercial failure. 294 pages. Very good condition in red cloth with gold lettering on the front cover and spine: a gift inscription on the front endpaper, lower corners slightly bumped and some slight spine slant - but overall a very attractive copy, with little soiling to the covers, bright lettering, and clean, flexible pages. .

Collection of Commemorative Japanese Military Propaganda Postcards

Group of 80 colorful pictorial postcards (3 duplicates), celebrating the Imperial Navy and the naval air force during the Meiji, Taish , and early Sh wa periods in Japan, often depicting specific war heroes or leaders along with particular ship and/or airplane models, many with traditional Japanese floral and geometric motifs and background decoration, unused. Beautifully illustrated. Each approx. 3-1/2" x 5-1/2". Loose as issued, housed in a modern album. Various cities (Japan) n.d. (circa 1905-1935). The Meiji period in Japan, which lasted from 1868 to 1912, was the time when Japanese society switched from an isolated feudal society to a more modern one, with fundamental changes to its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations. It was followed by the Taish period, which lasted until 1926, and is considered a more liberal time when political power shifted from the elder statesmen to the National Diet legislature and the democratic parties. The start of the Sh wa period was marked by a move into political totalitarianism, ultranationalism, and fascism, culminating in Japan's invasion of China in 1937. During this period, there was an increase in militarism and isolationism as Japanese power grew in Asia, and by the time of the invasion, Japan's navy was the third largest in the world. These postcards are a symbol of modernity, consumerism, mass production, commercial art, and an advertisement for the national culture of Japan.

"Sonnez les Matines" - Autograph Musical Manuscript

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Signed autograph musical manuscript of a song for voice and orchesta, "Sonnez les Matines," by the French composer of opera and song whose work was admired by Debussy and Fauré. The song, for one singer and an orchestration of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, timpani, harp, and strings, begins with the text "Pourquoi ne me bercez-vous plus..." 86 measures in A major, written in black ink on 24-staff Lard-Esnault (ed. Bellamy) manuscript paper. Corrections have been made by scraping and rewriting on three pages. The title page, with Hüe's signature, is written in blue pencil, and page numbers and rehearsal numbers have also been added in blue pencil. This manuscript was apparently used by the conductor; the song was included in Hüe's collection Jeunes Chansons sur de vieux airs (1905), with piano accompaniment. 15 pp. Toning to the cover and title page; slight edge wear and small tears to the spine, but overall in fine condition. 10.75 x 14 inches (27.5 x 35.5 cm).<br style="">"Born into a celebrated family of architects, [Hüe] was encouraged by Gounod and later studied counterpoint with Paladilhe and the organ with Franck. In 1879 he won the Prix de Rome with a cantata, Médée, and two years later won acclaim for his comic opera, Les pantins ('The Jumping-Jacks'). Vocal music was to form the core of his output... Hüe produced songs continually throughout his life. The earliest are firmly grounded in the salon tradition, while the later songs use a more developed musical language to respond to his chosen texts: Edith au col de cygne, for example, uses bars of uneven length. Between 1910 and 1920 his harmonic language advanced considerably, absorbing the added-note harmonies and static effects of the Impressionists, while remaining essentially traditional." (Richard Langham Smith, New Grove Online.)<br style="">

Eigenh. Brief mit U. München, 23. IV. 1905.

1905. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. WG² Blei, 19). - Gelocht (geringf. Buchstabenberührung).

Mémoires d'une Princesse Arabe. Traduit de l'allemand par L. Lindsay. Paris, Dujarric & Cie., 1905.

1905. Small 8vo. (6), 330 pp. Contemp. half calf with marbled boards and giltstamped spine. Marbled endpapers. First French edition of this fascinating biography of the Princess of Oman and Zanzibar, who married a German and later fled to Aden and Hamburg after becoming pregnant by him. The work is considered the first known autobiography of an Arab woman. It presents a remarkable perspective on the daily life of the Sultan in the mid and late 19th century, viewed from the eyes of an well-educated woman - subjects such as "La situation de la femme en Orient" ("A Woman's Position in the East", ch. XVI), courtship ("La mariage arabe", "Arab Matchmaking", ch. XVII), harems and polygamy, and even slavery are discussed at length (the Princess appearing rather favourably disposed to the latter!). As a later Christian convert, she remains fiercely proud of her homeland: "But it is just in Arabia, and with the Arab people, that the true Mahometan spirit, upon which the views of other Eastern nations are founded, has maintained itself most pure" (transl.). Her view of Muslim life represents the level-headed appreciation of a native of both East and West: "I have seen too many of such unhappy cases [of Christian marriage] to make me believe that Christian wedlock stands on a higher level or renders people much happier than the Mahometan [...] it is quite a fallacy to think that woman in the East is placed socially on a lower level than man. The legitimate wife - the purchased Sarari are of course to be excepted - stands in all respects on a par with her husband, and she always retains her rank, and all rights and titles emanating from it". Emily (Sayyida Salme) and her husband lived comfortably in Germany until the latter's death in 1870, upon which Emily was prompted to write the present work partly to alleviate her financial concerns. - Evenly browned throughout. Rare. OCLC 38270253. Cf. Hiler 763 (english ed. New York, 1907).
