COMPLETE WORKS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN (12 Volumes, Complete)

New York: Tandy-Thomas Company, 1905. Very Good. Memorial Edition, New and Enlarged. Numbered and limited 191/1000. Three-quarter bound morocco (goat) leather, ORIGINALLY dark green, but due to sun exposure, now a mostly uniform tan to spines; still dark green to front and back of boards/corners, with a bit of bleed-through. Ruled in gilt with gold-veined marbling to boards and endpapers, front and rear. Gilt lettering to spines. Top edges gilt, fore-edges and tails untrimmed, some uncut. Books measure 9.25 in. x 6.25 in. (23.495 cm. x 15.875 cm.). Illustrated with (tissue-guarded) portraits, a number of which are rarely-published depictions of Lincoln) engravings, drawings, photogravures, facsimiles of maps, & documents (some fold-out). Light shelf-rubbing to top edges and corners, and only two of the volumes -- I and III, show a bit of fraying from a tight shelf. (The others appear hardly, if ever used). Hinges great, bindings all tight. A lovely set that has well-weathered its 100+ years of shelf-life, despite the ravages of the sun. Volume XII is comprised of: 1) a 64-page anthology of Abraham Lincoln's sayings drawn from speeches, lectures, letters and memorandum; 2) a chronological index; and 3) a general index.

        The Voyage of the "Discovery".

New York and London: Charles Scribner's Sons; Smith, Elder, & Co.,, 1905. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original dark blue fine vertical-ribbed cloth, titles gilt to spines, gilt embossed medallions to front boards (reverse and obverse of the medal struck by the RGS), top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, title pages printed in red and black, 12 colour plates, 158 half-tone photographic plates, 12 further black and white plates, 5 double-page panoramas of which 4 from photographs, 5 maps of which one double-page and 2 folding in end-pockets. Extremities very lightly rubbed and bumped, vol. 1 spine gently rolled with commensurate mild cockling to cloth, rear board lightly marked, internally both volumes with slightly toned text-blocks, mild spotting to prelims, each of the 2 folding maps with one browned panel, vol. 1 with pale damp-stain to upper inner corner of frontispiece, rear inner hinge cracked but holding. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, "uncommon" US issue (Rosove), of Scott's official narrative of his first Antarctic expedition, published simultaneously with the UK issue. The 1901-4 voyage of the Discovery was the first scientific expedition to pass two consecutive winters at a high latitude in Antarctica, and made the first extensive land journeys into the interior of the continent; a farthest south of 82°17' was achieved on 30 December 1902. The trip was the beginning of the mutual antipathy between Scott and Shackleton, partly owing to Scott's forcing Shackleton's early return to England on account of illness. Among the civilian scientists was Dr Edward Adrian Wilson, Scott's close friend and confidant on this and his last expedition, where he too was to die; a talented artist, he also contributed watercolours for the attractive frontispieces and several of the plates, including all those in colour. With twenty-eight sledge journeys accomplished, the ice sheet explored, and a comprehensive scientific programme completed, the expedition was a triumph, although the failure of Scott's dogs was an ominous portent. This copy bears the gift inscription, "Lewis Herresshoff, from S. G. Coxe, February 1906" to the front free endpaper of the first volume. The recipient (1844-1926) was a member of a noted family of American marine engineers and yachtbuilders; his nephew (1890-1972) was also called Lewis, but went by Francis. An agreeable association copy of this "elaborate and handsome publication" (Taurus), a classic of the genre.

        Newport, Our Social Capital

Lippincott, London, 1905. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. VAN RENSSELAER, MRS. JOHN KING. Newport, Our Social Capital, Philadelphia and London: Lippincott, 1905. Heavy quarto, copy No. 131 of 347, pp. 401, color frontis, photo plates, quarter-bound brown cloth boards recently rebacked, gilt lettering on spine, gilt lettering and nautical-themed heraldic decoration inside gilt border on upper panel, 2 maps in rear pocket, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Except for the watercolor frontispiece, the illustrations are drawn tritone headpieces and insets, photogravures and halftones of a very high quality for their era. Indeed no expense was spared anywhere in this book, which uses heavy linen stock throughout and tissue guards for the illustrations. Although the extensive illustration dwells lovingly on the luxury of Newport, Mrs. Van Rensselaer's subject matter is actually local history and Newport's role in American history. The maps measure about 22x11 inches and 20x25 inches. Condition of this book: Boards discolored in small areas and rubbed at extremities, very sound. Gift inscription penciled onto free front endpaper, leaves clean and tight, images fine. Maps near fine with small areas of toning at the creases of the larger map.         Neue Malereien für Decken un Wände. Dritte Serie. Cover title: Grohmann Maler in Dresden. Neue Malereien fur Decken und Wande. 24 Tafeln. Serie III.

Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Eugen Twietmeyer). Leipzig. 1905. - 21 of 24 color lithographic plates, 19 1/2 x 15 inches, decorative color paper-covered board portfolio with ribbon ties. Portfolio worn and soiled, with loss; MISSING plates 42, 51 and 52. Scattered soiling, edge tears and creasing in margins of several plates. Soiling in two plates (44 and 45); plate 38 has 4 ink spots, 2 of which are in the image (from paints used by a copyist). Beautifully executed Art Nouveau designs for decorating walls and ceilings created by Paul Grohmann, who had an extended career in creating such portfolio design publications. A number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics that emerged in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. Two plates feature a single image, ten feature two images, while the balance feature three or more images. The price list at the front of the portfolio indicates that the plates could be purchased individually or as a set and were available in two different formats (at different prices). The series begins with Plate 29 and ends with Plate 52. The colors used are primarily in pastel shades augmented by vibrant gold outlining. This type of applied art portfolio is seldom found complete, since they were used as working references. An extremely scarce title; no listing appears in WorldCat.

        The Winning of the West

NY, Current Literature Publishing Company, 1905. Hard Cover. Six volumes; 18 cm. Vol.1, 288 p., The Spread of the English-speaking Peoples; 2, 331 p., In the Current of the Revolution; 3, 320 p., The War in the Northwest; 4, 263 p., The Indian Wars, 1784-1787. Franklin, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee; 5, 230 p., St. Clair and Wayne; 6, 308 p., Louisiana and Aaron Burr. Frontispieces in all volumes. Roosevelt published this delightfully written adventure story in 1889. Interest in it flourished during his presidency, and it was brought out in this smaller format. The old suede spines had disintegrated over the past century, so to preserve this set and to make it easier to read, I had my binder replace the spines with white cloth to match the original boards, with new endpapers, and matching the original spine titles. I may have paid too much for the binding, but this copy will outlast any I have seen offered for sale, as well as the ones in libraries. Stock#OB1065. Very Good.

Kliuv: ezhenedel'nyi zhurnal politicheskoi i obshchestvennoi satiry [The beak: a weekly journal of political and social satire], nos. 1-2 (all published).

St. Petersburg: Tip. "Narodnaia pol'za" 1905 - Quartos (ca. 36 × 24.5 cm). Original pictorial self-wrappers; 8 pp. each. Each with numerous black-and-white cartoons. Good or better, with light wear and soil, some fraying to edges and tear to lower right corner of the second issue. Complete run (only two issues appeared) of this Russian satirical journal, which was distributed to subscribers in lieu of the even more short-lived "Diatel" ("Woodpecker"), which was prohibited after only one issue. Two issues of "Woodpecker" were printed, but both were likewise confiscated. The journal was forbidden and the editor, he editor, A. Gol'mstrem, received a six month jail sentence. Cathy Porter notes that journals such as these were, in particular, a reaction to Bloody Sunday, a protest which left hundreds dead and many more wounded: “Alongside the struggle in street and factory was the struggle for the free press. Ministers and clerics suffered assassination more by the pen than the bullet as the revolution strove for the expression of powerful emotions long suppressed. A flood of satirical journals poured from the presses, honouring the dead and vilifying the mighty. Drawings of frenzied immediacy and extraordinary technical virtuosity were combined with prose and verse written in a popular underground language, veiled in allgory, metaphor and references to the past [ ] For a few brief months the journals spoke with a great and unprecedented rage that neither arrest nor exile could silence" (Blood & Laughter: Caricatures from the 1905 Revolution, pp. 18-19). The first issue features a caricature of a policeman clutching a large number of confiscated satirical journals, with the caption "A successful hunt." Numerous other caricatures take aim at Sergei Witte, the Russian finance minister and first prime minister in 1905. Smirnov-Sokol'skii 2234. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Das römische Carneval. Nr. 114 von 250 numerierten Exemplaren.

Leipzig, Insel-Verlag, 1905. Faksimile-Druck - eigentlich zweite Auflage. Mit gestochener Titelvignette und 20 handkolorierten lithographischen Tafeln. 1 faksim. Umschlag (Vorderdeckel), 2 Blätter, 58 Seiten, 20 Blätter mit einseitig lithographierten Tafeln, 1 Blatt mit Druckvermerk, 1 Blatt faksim. Umschlag (Hinterdeckel). Lex.-8° (22,2 cm x 28 cm). Orig.-Kalblederband mit Rückenvergoldung, Goldbordüren, Stehkantenvergoldung und eingebd. Orig.-Umschlag. Strely: zhurnal sarkasticheskii i bezposhchadnyi [Arrows: a journal both sarcastic and merciless], nos. 2-6 (1905) and 9 (1906).

St. Petersburg: Tipo-lit. "Energiia" 1905 - Quartos (ca. 33 × 23 cm). Original pictorial self-wrappers; 12 pp. each. Each with numerous color (black and red) cartoons. About good to very good copies with occasional light soil; one issue with old horizontal crease; one with front wrapper detached, two old Soviet bookstore stamps to rear wrapper, and one discrete library duplicate stamp. Substantial run (six of nine issues published) of the striking satirical journal, which billed itself as one of the most ruthlessly anti-tsarist publications to emerge in the Russian Revolution of 1905 ("sarcastic and merciless"). Cathy Porter notes that these journals were, in particular, a reaction to Bloody Sunday, a protest which left hundreds dead and many more wounded: “Alongside the struggle in street and factory was the struggle for the free press. 18-19). "Strely" features some of the earliest work of the political cartoonist and caricaturist Nikolai Remizov (or Remisoff, 1887-1979), who was loosely allied with the World of Art (Mir iskusstva) movement, and published throughout the 1910s under the pseudonym "Re-Mi." Other illustrations are signed "Gamlet" (Hamlet). Various contributions are under such pseudonyms as Parlamenter and Zoil. A known contributor was Leonid Munstein (Lolo), a playwright and poet who left Russia after the October Revolution and would direct his ire against the Bolsheviks. The editor, Isai Knorozovsky (born 1858) was a musicologist and editor who founded "Strely" after the October Manifesto, which granted, among others, the right of free press in response to the strikes and unrest that gripped the Russian Empire throughout 1905. Nevertheless, issues 2 and 5 of the journal were confiscated, and no. 9 was destroyed by court order and is considered the rarest. Knorozovsky received a jail sentence and was forbidden from editorial activities for five years. Smirnov-Sokol'skii 2292. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
