        Lysistrata Prints (and one other).

[Germany]: Privatdruck, 1905. Folio, 8 plates from Lysistrata printed on Japan vellum in b/w enclosed in a yellow paper printed folder. Very fine as issued. “Dieses Werk wurde in einer einmaligen Auflage von 100 numierten Exemplaren hergestellt. Ein Nachdruck findet night statt, die Platten sind vernichtet.” Rare large paper printing of all the plates from Beardsley's fin-de-siècle erotic masterpiece. The first edition of Lysistrata was published in 1896 in an edition of only 100 copies, with several subsequent pirated editions, and a collotype reissue of the plates in 1929. This rare early edition of the plates replicates the published edition in that the illustrations are printed on Japan vellum, however the plates are here printed on large paper. Also loosely inserted is a slightly smaller plate titled “The Pierrot of the Minute” with the note “Beardsley” in pencil.

Collection of 23 Photographs of Goldfield, Nevada

This spectacular collection documents the height of the gold mining boomtown of Goldfield, Nevada. The images present the movement of gold from the solitary prospector and small claims to large industrial operations, from excavating, processing and shipping of ore to its sale, banking and stock trading, and ending with its expenditure on gambling and prostitutes. The wonderful mining views include images of large commercial operations, small claims, a girl playing outside a dugout home, a prospector with his burros, and caravans transporting ore. Town views include the main street and the businesses the gold boom fueled, the tent in which the Mining Review was operated by the con man Jacob Herzig, large commercial banks, and the trading floor on which mining stocks were bought and sold. Most of these photographs were taken during the boom of 1905-1906 by a little-known female photographer, Laura Titsworth. The Goldfield boom began in 1902 when two bankrupt prospectors, Harry Stimler and Billy March, discovered gold in the hills south of Tonopah. Tents soon appeared at claims in the barren hills in the mining district known as "Grandpa." As vast deposits of gold were discovered, the town was renamed Goldfield. The town attracted not only miners but also the people and businesses that served them, including the gambling hall and the brothel seen in these photographs. These latter images depict one of the earliest and best photographs of the interior of a Western gambling hall and one of the best-known brothels in the state. By 1904 Goldfield had attracted some of the most famous--and infamous--men of the American West. The fabled lawman Virgil Earp came to Goldfield in 1904 and was soon named deputy sheriff in 1905 despite an atrophied arm caused by the bullet taken at the O.K. Corral. Wyatt Earp was a pit boss and enforcer at Tex Rickard's Northern Saloon, which boasted the longest bar in the history of mining towns and would soon become home to an infamous gambling house. The celebrated saloonkeeper and sporting promoter Tex Rickard knew Wyatt Earp from a previous mining venture in Alaska. In 1906, Goldfield's best mining year, the town had a population of 30,000 inhabitants, produced $11 million in gold, and was the largest town in Nevada. That year, Tex Rickard's Northern Saloon gained national attention thanks to Jacob Herzig--a criminal stock trader and con artist who operated under the name George Graham Rice. With Herzig's help, Rickard set up a boxing match between Joe Gans and Oscar "Battling" Nelson that attracted national attention. As recognition for the town grew, so did Herzig's mining stock trading company, L.M. Sullivan Trust Company. The following year, Herzig fled to Reno when his company finally went bankrupt, and by 1913 Goldfield was in rapid decline. Comprehensive collections of documentary photographs of gold mining boomtowns are now very scarce in private hands, and those of legendary towns like Goldfield are rare. 23 gelatin silver prints (approx. 7 x 9 ½ in. to 8 x 10 in.), all but two signed "Titsworth Photo" in the negative. Remnants of old mounting on most versos. One photograph with trimmed corner, very good to fine condition overall.

Slightly browned; some surface soiling and wear; many previously framed or mounted. In quite good condition overall. Pitcher (most commonly referred to as Wilhelm) worked as a set and costume designer for ballets, pantomimes, comic operas, musical comedies, and Shakespearian and other theatrical productions. He is perhaps best-known for his work for the Empire Theatre in London from 1887 to 1915, where he designed both sets and costumes for numerous ballets, many of which starred Adeline Genée (she performed the skirt dance at the Empire Theatre in 1899 in "Round the Town Again"). He also contributed a number of articles to The Magazine of Art, including one entitled "Art in Ballet" in 1895. "Wilhelm was one of the most prolific stage designers of his day... For 20 years before World War I he was (in all but name) artistic director of ballet at the Empire Theatre, London. He wrote the scenarios and co-ordinated choreography, music and design into a coherent whole, ahead of similar concepts by the great choreographer Michael Fokine at the Diaghilev ballet. Wilhelm had great taste and his costumes were designed with strong attention to detail... His designs seem superficially charming, but are actually very practical, perfectly depicting in watercolour the fabrics he wanted the makers to use as well as indicating the character for which the design was intended." Website of the Victoria and Albert Museum "The Empire Theatre was the center for Victorian ballet. William John Charles Pitcher, known as C. Wilhelm, played an important role at the Empire from 1887 to 1915 as librettist and designer of costumes and settings. His costume designs were imaginative adaptations of historical costumes, descriptive representations of material objects, and detailed conceptions executed in soft and delicate tonalities. Many of Wilhelm's sketches have survived and thus are able to serve as a documentation of the period's social aesthetic." Eras of the Dance p. 54. Verdak, noted ballet dancer and choreographer, was an important collector of historical documents and works of art relating to the dance, assembling a large and important archive over many years. After dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and other companies, he became artistic director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and professor of Dance at Butler University.

Jugendstil Classic- Preissig] Byl Jeden Domecek

Dedictvi Komenskeho [1905], Prague - Bound in the original scarce pictorial card wrappers (gray/beige with light blue design by Preissig. Twelve superb full-page color zincographs by Preissig, the renowned Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator and teacher. Very rare first edition, seldom found in the wrappers, of the famous Czech children's book. The little text portrays the transience of being on the bottom of a somewhat morbid food chain: from which the cat eats, to oxen, which serve men for a feast, which are finally buried. Alfred Langer writes to the Jugendstil artist Vojtech Preissig: "According to his motto of the" full-blooded bookgraphist, " he demanded a synthesis of craftsmanship and art. The harmony of writing and book decoration was regarded as the most desirable goal. "(Langer, Jugendstil und Buchkunst, p. 175). Near fine with minimal corner wear. [Attributes: First Edition]

Slightly worn; two minor annotations in blue ink and remnants of former mount to verso. Probable First Edition of the first Italian version. Amica, to a libretto by French publisher Paul de Choudens (Bérel was a pseudonym), was first performed in Monte Carlo at the Théâtre du Casino on March 16, 1905, and was an immediate success. The Italian premiere (with an Italian libretto by Mascagni's close collaborator, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti) took place on May 13, 1905, with Riccardo Stracciari (1875-1955) as Rinaldo. Mascagni conducted both performances. It was the composer's only opera with a French libretto. "Stracciari's mellow, velvety voice, coloured and resonant over its whole range, with an extended and penetrating upper register, made him, between 1905 and 1915, the rival of Titta Ruffo and Pasquale Amato. His repertory included all the great baritone roles and among the dramatic parts he preferred those in Il trovatore, Rigoletto and Aida. But, thanks to a technique characteristic of the best traditions of the 19th century, he excelled in works which allowed him to display his courtly enunciation, smooth singing, elegant phrasing and musical delicacy." Rodolfo Celletti in Grove Music Online. A notable association copy.

      o. O. , 6. IV. 1905. - 8vo. 1 p. To the French operatic bass Félix Vieuille (1872-1953) who sang for more than four decades with the Opéra-Comique in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century about his role in Pelléas et Mélisande: "l’art d’être grand père" de notre national poëte Victor Hugo, n’en prenez aucun souci, car vous êtes le plus grand et le plus profondément humain des "grands pères" ( ). Laissez-moi vous en remercier une fois de plus et vous serez affectueusement les mains ( ). - He created roles in numerous world premieres, most notably portraying Arkel in the original production of Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in 1902 which he went on to sing 208 times at that house. He possessed a rich voice and a solid technique which helped sustain his career for a long time. His voice is preserved on a number of recordings made on the Odeon, Lyrophon, and Beka labels.

        The Game

Macmillan, New York 1905 - First edition, second issue. With plate illustrations and decorations by Henry Hutt and T.C. Lawrence. 182, [6 (ads)] pp. 8vo. Inscribed to London's close friend and early admirer, Cloudesley Johns. First edition, inscribed by London: "Dear Cloudesley - Who is ethically disinclined to my flimflamming a capitalist society out of a dollar and a half, and who, therefore, as a good socialist must make explanation to another good socialist, namely, Jack London Glen Ellen, July 17/05."An excellent association copy of Jack London's boxing novel. According to London, Cloudesley Johns was the first person who ever wrote him about his work, offering praise of the stories "To the Man on Trail" and "The White Silence" in the January and February 1899 issues of the Overland. The resulting friendship lasted until London's death (see The Book of Jack London, 1899, p. 277ff). "If Jack had no mentor but himself, Cloudesley had Jack London - a pugnacious mentor who seldom pulled his punches. Jack's advice was born of his own experience and to Johns, as to many other aspiring writers, he gave of it freely. They met on several occasions. During London's writing of The Sea Wolf in 1903, Johns came up to Piedmont and the two men sailed up to the mouth of the Sacramento River on Jack's sloop Spray. There they played chess, swam, shot ducks and mudhens, fished, talked and wrote. 'The more I see of Cloudesley, the more I like him,' Jack wrote. 'He is honest and loyal, young and fresh, understands the discipline of a boat, and is a good cook, to say nothing of being a good-natured and genial companion'" (Walker and Reesman, p. 15). BAL 11886; Woodbridge 36; Hartley 1240 Original green-gray pictorial cloth, decorated in white and brown and lettered in red and gilt, t.e.g., illustrated endpapers. A few vignette illustrations colored in crayon, crayon scribbles to gutter of pp 38-39, staple at bottom of ffep, long closed tear to pp. 77-8, spine slightly darkened, humorous contemporary ink inscription on front-free endpaper, some rubbing and wear to extremities With plate illustrations and decorations by Henry Hutt and T.C.         To Jerusalem through the lands of Islam among Jews, Christians, and Moslems. Preface by Prince de Polignac

Chicago: Open Court Publishing, 1905. First edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 325, [1], [4] ads; photographiic frontispiece illustration and numerous photographic plates throughout; errata slip tipped in at contents page; original green cloth stamped in gilt and silver on spine, the front cover lettered in black and with photographic paper onlay, t.e.g.; extremities worn, with spine ends chipped and fraying and the spine stamping faded and worn; the boards somewhat soiled and scraped; overall good and sound, and a unique copy. A previous owner has penned on the front cover, "Rare book, by my friend Madame Loyson of Paris. D.W." and laid-in is a 4-page ALs from Madame Loyson to an unnamed correspondent, perhaps "D.W."? Writing on "23 Nov. 03" on the letterhead of "Alliance des Femmes Orientales et Occidentales," as the president of the Alliance, Madame Loyson requests assistance in securing a publisher for the manuscript recounting her travels in the Middle East and Africa in 1894-1896. The author asks her correspondent to hawk her book in New York, but adds, "As there is a great deal of Unitarianism (for Moslems are simply--but grandly--nothing else but Unitarian Christians--& with more faith... in Jesus than many of Channing's Followers!) perhaps Boston would be better than N. York." Madame Loyson (the American heiress Emilie Jane Butterfield Merriman) traveled with her husband, the popular former Carmelite priest known as Pere Hyacinthe Loyson (1827-1912), who was excommunicated from the Catholic church for his protest against the doctrine of papal infallibility forwarded at the Vatican Council of 1870. Madame Loyson also writes briefly of their son, Paul (1873-1921), the successful author, lecturer, and playwright.

Collection of Christmas cards by Georgie Gaskin

1905 - A collection of nine color Christmas cards for the years 1897 through 1905, designed by Georgie Gaskin for Laurence W. Hodson and his family. The cards feature delicate vining borders intertwined with banners that extend the Christmas greeting for that year. The subjects of the cards include the Hodson children at play and nativity scenes, and one contains a calendar for the year 1905. Five of the cards are folded and include printed Christmas greetings hand-lettered by Gaskin. Georgie Gaskin and her husband Arthur were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Though Arthur Gaskin illustrated books, including The Shepheard's Calendar by the Kelmscott Press, the couple was more well known for their elegant handmade jewelry. Georgie designed the jewelry, which often featured elaborate flowering vines, a characteristic that can readily be seen in these Christmas card designs. The cards were previously held in mats and show some mat burn to the front side with adhesive on the back; a few have also been trimmed along one or more edges; otherwise, the items in this collection are in near fine condition.

        Russia.

Philadelphia: The International Press,, 1905. Translated from the French, with an additional chapter upon the struggle for supremacy in the Far East by Florence MacIntyre Tyson. 2 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, Romanov coat of arms stamped on front covers in gilt, top edge gilt. With the cloth-backed dust jackets and original slipcase lettered in gilt. With photogravure frontispieces and 48 photogravure illustrations with captioned tissue guards. An excellent set in the dust jackets, slightly bumped at spine panel ends, lightly rubbed at extremities. A new edition of Gautier's account of his travels in Russia, first published in France in 1867 and first translated into English in 1874. Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) is best known as a literary critic and staunch defender of Romanticism, but he was also widely travelled and published travel writings for various parts of the world. His account of Russia provides a detailed look at Russian society, culture and history in the late nineteenth century. The book was published as the 1905 Russian Revolution was ongoing, and the final additional chapter by the translator outlines the debacle of the Russo-Japanese War and the prospect of reform of Russia's autocratic government. This is a highly attractive edition, well bound and illustrated, in the scarce original dust jackets and slipcase.
