VIETNAM.

Istanbul Royal War Office, under protection of Ahmed Muhtar Pasha.
Dersaadet [Istanbul]: Istinsah Ayd?n. Lithograph in black, blue and red (small tears and worm holes in folds, slightly age-toned, otherwise in a good condition) 69 x 50 cm (27.2 x 19.7 inches). A very rare broadside with Ottoman script showing the Battle of Mohács was made in the series of large separately published maps by the Turkish War Office the late Hamidian period as a part of intellectual propaganda to revive patriotic sentiment. A very rare broadside, issued in 1903, showcases the map the Battle of Mohács, fought in 1526. The battle fought between the Hungarian army under King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia Louis II, and the Ottoman army led by Suleiman the Magnificent, was one of the most consequential battles in Central European history. The battle with more than 100,000 participants resulted in a defeat of Hungary and death of king Louis II. The Battle of Mohács was a milestone, which marked the end of the Middle Ages in Hungary. The sheet was publshed in a series Ottoman State Military History in the last years under the reign of Abdul Hamid II by a Royal War Office under the patronage of General Ahmed Muhtar . The series was suppose to educate people on the military history through the images of great Ottoman battles in the early 20th century, when the Ottoman Empire was undergoing a great crisis. In 1908 year Sultan Abdul Hamid was deposed in the Young Turk Revolution. Traditionally the focus of Ottoman map making was not on historical cartography. As such the present battle plan of a key historical engagement in South Easter Europe is remarkable. We could n … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Yeats, William Butler
A.H. Bullen, London. Green cloth and boards, paper spine label, edges rough-trimmed. Edges and end leaves foxed, lower corner bumped, a couple of scratches to label, else very good. First edition, British issue. One of 970 copies, from a total edition of 1490 copies that also included 520 copies with the U.S. imprint. With Lady Gregory's bookplate. Inscribed in the month of publication: "Lady Gregory from her friend WB Yeats May 9, 1903." A collection of Yeats's essays on art and literature (including those on William Blake) collected from their previous appearances in periodicals, 1895 - 1902. Lady Gregory recorded the circumstances of her first meeting with Yeats, and the birth of a friendship central to modern Irish literary history in 'Our Irish Theatre': "On one of those days at Duras in 1898, Mr. Edward Martyn, my neighbour, came to see the Count (de Basterot), bringing with him Mr.Yeats, whom I did not then know very well, though I cared for his work very much and had already, through his directions, been gathering folk- lore. They had lunch with us, but it was a wet day, and we could not go out. After a while I thought the Count wanted to talk to Mr. Martyn alone; so I took Mr. Yeats to the office where the steward used to come to talk, less about business I think than of the Land War or the state of the country, or the last year's deaths and marriages from Kinvara to the headland of Aughanish. We sat there through that wet afternoon, and though I had never been at all interested in theatres, our talk turned on plays. Mr. Martyn had written two, The Heather Field an … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

YEATS, W. B.
Dundrum, Dublin: Dun Emer Press, 1903–7. 11 works, octavo. Original linen-backed grey or pale blue paper boards, except for In the Seven Woods which is in the original off-white linen. Housed together in a custom made grey-green cloth slipcase. Spine labels chipped, endpapers browned (as usual), light brown mottling to covers of In the Seven Woods. All colophons and some letterpress printed in red. An attractive complete set of the books issued by the Dun Emer Press, the private press established by Yeats's sisters that played a central part in the Celtic Revival. The poet acted as literary editor and subsidised its productions; a number of the publications are Yeats first editions. "In 1902, when [Lily] Yeats and her sister, Elizabeth, were invited by Evelyn Gleeson (1855–1944), Gaelic leaguer and suffragist, to help set up a craft enterprise along the lines of Morris's utopian socialist ideals, they moved back to Dublin with their father. They took a cottage, Gurteen Dhas ('pretty little meadow'), in Churchtown, Dundrum, near the house, Dun Emer, in which Gleeson set up a printing press, carpet and needlework rooms, and other artistic ventures" (ODNB). Elizabeth Yeats took a short printing course and oversaw productions. "The Dun Emer Press was set up using a second-hand Albion handpress that it had acquired through advertising in local newspapers, and paper that had been manufactured at the County Dublin Saggart Mills. [the Press] showed how a specialist press, driven by a combination of the Gaelic League and the Arts and Crafts Movement, could work against the grain of … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Yeats, William Butler
The Dun Emer Press, Dundrum. Linen over boards, paper label on upper cover. Cloth a bit foxed, some cloth bubbling on upper board, some tanning and modest soiling, otherwise very good. First edition. One of 325 copies printed. Inscribed in the month of publication: "Miss Horniman from her friend the writer, August 22nd 1903." Although Wade notes copies were finished in mid-July, formal publication occurred in August, and Yeats later commented to John Quinn that this was "the first book of mine that it is a pleasure to look at - a pleasure whether open or shut." Horniman, the daughter of a wealthy tea merchant, joined the Order of the Golden Dawn in January 1890, the context in which she first met Yeats. Horniman resigned from the Order in February of 1903, and began to devote her time and energy to the Irish Theatre. She designed and made the costumes for the first production of THE KING'S THRESHOLD, and Yeats's presentation on the aims of the Irish National Dramatic Society that accompanied the first performances of the play in early October 1903 solidified her decision to act as a significant financial backer of the Society. She also served, for a time, as Yeats's amanuensis. For a substantial account of her connection with him, see pp. 709-713 of LETTERS III. WADE 49. MILLER 1. [Attributes: First Edition]

London, Jack
1903 - Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Decorated by Chas. Edw. Hooper. Toronto: George N. Morang & Company, 1903. Original blue-green cloth pictorially decorated in white, black and light blue. First Canadian Edition of one of Jack London's best-known books. Buck, part St. Bernard and part Scotch shepherd, is reared in luxury on a California estate, is stolen, beaten and shipped to the Klondike to become a sled dog, and (after the death of his master) heeds the call of the wild and abandons human civilization to lead a wolf pack. As S&M points out, this Canadian edition collates the same as Macmillan's U.S. edition, except for both sides of the title leaf and the lack of an ad leaf at the rear; the binding design is also the same, but with a different color cloth and slightly different color design.~This is a bright, near-fine copy (very minor rubbing at some edges) -- of an edition that is considerably scarcer than Macmillan's. Sisson & Martens pp 119-120; Blanck 11876. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
