Top edge gilt with uncut pages edges on the fore edge and bottom. Absolutely no evidence of previous ownership--no marks or bookplates. Light edgewear to the bottom boards and a couple of light scratches to the bottom rear board. Some dustiness to the fore edge and bottom page edges as befitting 110 years of existence. "July 1903" on copyright page--231 pp with two pages of advertisements---original tissue guard covering frontispiece in spectacular condition--just a great copy of this classic of American Literature.

In the rare correct glazed paper glassine dust jacket printed in black with the price “1/- NET” at foot of spine, an advertisement for “The Peter Rabbit Books” on the back panel listing The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, and The Tailor of Gloucester, and with vertical lines at the top and bottom of the spine indicating where the fold should come for the front panel. The jacket has a few very small chips along the top edge (the largest being a 3/8 inch piece missing at the top of the spine), but is certainly the finest jacket for this title that we have ever seen.“The year 1903 appears on the front of the title-page of the first two printings. The first printing [October 1903] has a single-page end-paper occurring four times, and the second printing [December 1903], a double-page end-paper occurring twice. In the art fabric de-luxe edition, some copies have the usual frontispiece, others have the cover picture in its place. Complete in Two Volumes. With several portrait plates. Thomas Creevey, 1768-1838, was an Englishpolitician. Creevey's charm and good humour made him both popular and a delightful guest; his fame derives from the amusing letters preserved by the Ord family. His importance as a historical source is considerable. No one described more graphically the appearance, or recorded more faithfully the looks and the talk, of the royal personages and major politicians of the time -DNB. Sir Herbert Maxwell, 1845-1937, was a politician and author. His editing of the Creevey Papers (2 vols. , 1903) provided a valuable supplement to the Greville Memoirs -DNB. EXTREMELY PLEASING MIDNIGHT BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, INTRICATELY GILT, BY STIKEMAN (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with gilt frame formed by three rows of tiny gilt circlets enclosing two intertwining vines that combine at 12 intervals to produce a trio of rose blossoms; raised bands, spine gilt in double-ruled compartments containing a tulip beneath a daisy, the flowers surrounded by gilt circlets, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In a matching morocco-backed felt-lined solander box. Printed in red and black. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Paul Chevalier. Tompkinson, p. 171; Ransom 42. With the inevitable slight offsetting to free endpapers from the turn-ins, otherwise A MOST ATTRACTIVE COPY IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the binding lustrous and unworn, and the text with no signs of use. Stikeman's work here adorns a substantial poem in rhyme-royal, "The Kingis Quair," or "King's Quire" (i.e., "King's Book"), composed in England in 1423-24 by James I of Scotland (1394-1437). James had been captured by the English at the age of 12 and detained for 19 years, during which time he became both well educated and betrothed to Lady Jane Beaufort, the heroine of the poem. The work is obviously imaginative and autobiographical, recounting the plight of a love-struck royal prisoner and his (eventually successful) entreaties of Minerva, Venus, and Fortune to aid him in his quest for Lady Jane's hand. The poem, which shows the influence of Chaucer, was discovered and first printed in 1783, and later was quoted from by Rossetti in his "The King's Tragedy," a work which has James, who was assassinated at Perth when he was 43, as its main character. This attractive edition by Charles Ricketts' Vale Press is printed in an uncial-style type appropriately called the King's Fount, and between the typography, the high quality paper that always comes with Vale Press printings, and especially the binding, this is an item with several sources of pleasure. The binding comes from the celebrated collection of Paul Edward Chevalier, about whom, see item #63, above.

        Set of 92 Glass Lantern Slides of Sicily, Constantinople, Istanbul, Ephesus, Athens, and Corinth

      1903. Set of 92 glass lantern slides. Photographs taken circa 1903-1904 by Albert Edward Coe. Images are black and white. Each glass slide measures approximately 8 x 8cm, and each labeled with the photographer's name in gilt. The lot in very good condition, contained in a wooden box, measuring approximately 20 x 38 x 10cm (WxLxH). Accompanied with two manuscript lists in the photographer's hand. The first is headed 'Holiday in the Mediterranean' 10 pages. The second, a double-leaf folio sheet listing the slides. With the innate ability to render objects their due grandeur, renowned nineteenth century photographer Albert Edward Coe, owner of Coe & Sons Ltd. and leader in Britain's elite photographic society, presents sublime views of antiquity and architecture in Turkey and Greece, dispersed with insouciant scenes of travel at the turn of the century. Exclusive and rare! Coe's seafaring tour was one of the last voyages of the clipper SS Cuzco, taken in 1903 or 1904. His journey and artistic approach affords us a unique visual perspective of some of history's most significant landmarks. Features spectacular cityscape and harbour views, ancient towering columns, dilapidating monuments, archaeological sites, and remnants of despotic Roman, Greek, and Byzantine Empires. In Constantinople (Istanbul) we see the interior and exterior of the Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), the Galata Bridge, mosques, and a group of male dervishes. He continues to Smyrna in Anatolia, capturing scenes of the inner city and its people, only a few years before it would see ruin by the Great Fire of Smyrna. Several photographs are taken in Ephesus (Efes) on the west coast of Asia Minor, including an ancient aqueduct and theatre. In Athens, Greece, he photographs the Parthenon and the Erechtheion of the Acropolis. Coe also visits Ancient Corinth and the canal which had just been completed in 1893. Together with Coe's original lists of the photographs. The first is headed 'Holiday in the Mediterranean' and lists photographs in sequence taken, essentially also serving as an itinerary of travel, 10 pages, 8vo fastened with a brad. The second document, headed 'List of Slides' is more specific in naming places and sights, 3 pages written on a folio double-leaf. From these lists it appears that all but nine photographs were made into glass slides. Select photos in this collection warrant special merrit for the breadth achieved, particularly when taken into consideration that the art of photography was still developing, and the tools at Coe's disposal were somewhat rudimentary by today's standards. (The first fully practical color plate, Autochrome, did not reach the market until 1907.) .

ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT (stamp-signed "Charles E. Lauriat" on verso of front free endpaper), covers framed by two plain gilt rules, raised bands, spines lavishly gilt in compartments with large central fleuron surrounded by a lozenge of small tools and intricate scrolling cornerpieces, densely gilt turn-ins, top edges gilt. EXTRAVAGANTLY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 653 PLATES, five of these folding, two double-page, and two colored. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Joel Cheney Wells (see below). Just the vaguest hint of rubbing to extremities, isolated small marginal stains, but still A HANDSOMELY BOUND SET IN FINE CONDITION, fresh and clean internally, and in lustrous bindings with few signs of wear. This set contains numerous letters, essays, tales, and poems, as well as Lamb's larger works, "Elia," "The Last Essays of Elia," "Rosamund Gray," "The Pawnbroker's Daughter," and "The Adventures of Ulysses," and the popular childres' works co-authored with his sister Mary. The correspondence of Lamb, by turns witty and meditative, reveals a life of intense reading and writing at a time when British literature was undergoing a radical transformation. Lamb was a friend to many of the leading literary figures of the Romantic period, and his correspondents include Wordsworth, Southey, and Coleridge, whom he had known since his youth. But Lamb is chiefly remembered as "the prince of English essayists." According to Day, Lamb contributed to the essay form by concentrating on feeling, rather than thought, by projecting a fuller sense of self into the work, and by imbuing his text with a poetic or lyrical quality. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was educated at Christ's Hospital, where he formed a lasting relationship with Coleridge. At 17 he joined the East India House, where he worked from 1792-1825. In 1796, Lamb's sister Mary (1764-1847) stabbed and killed their mother with scissors in a fit of insanity. Charles took on her care as well as serving as sole support for a dying aunt and a prematurely senile father. For the two years preceding this catastrophe, Lamb himself had experienced a period of derangement in his early twenties that haunted him the rest of his life. Nonetheless, Lamb and his sister were devoted to one another and lived long and productive lives, publishing together the wildly popular "Tales from Shakespeare" (1807) and "Mrs. Leicester's School" (1809). Some of Mary's poems are also included in this set, which concludes with a two-volume life of Charles Lamb by E. V. Lucas. Former owner Joel Cheney Wells (1874-1960) was an inventor and co-founder American Optical Co., whose collection of early Americana was the foundation of the living museum in Old Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

Goffin fils after Rodrigues, 1p. printed facsimile of a document signed by 24 members of Second Congreso Cientifico Latino Americano, occasional half-tone illustrations. Unbound as issued in original green cloth portfolios by Carabin-Schildknecht of Brussels, the cloth grained in imitation of cayman, alligator or snake skin, the upper covers with large onset red cloth panels elaborately blocked in gilt with an overall art nouveau design by Francois Wissaert of Brussels, incorporating the title, author's name and an emblematic scene featuring Amazonian Indians, cloth ties. A fine copy of one of the two greatest works on the palm trees of Brazil, illustrated with spectacular semi- abstract images of almost 150 species. The plates divide naturally into two groups: the first smaller group is of views of entire trees, often in their natural setting. These have a naive immediacy and vitality that is charming. The second much larger group of detailed drawings follow the correct guidelines for technical botanical drawings, but, mainly as a result of the need to fold the large leaves to be depicted, they achieve a wonderful semi-abstract status that recalls the photographic work of Man Ray, or painterly images from artists ranging from Georgia O'Keefe to Victor Vasarely. The book was the result of almost thirty years of field work by Barbosa Rodrigues, where, working under extreme conditions, he always tried to produce a record of the plants close to where he had found them. Following in the footsteps of Carl von Martius's Historia naturalis palmarum (Munich, 1823-50), Barbosa Rodrigues notes that he studied and described more than 100 species that were new and unknown to science. Barbosa Rodrigues, Brazilian born botanist and traveller, collected widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897. Much of his early work was on orchids, and by 1869 he had completed over 800 plates and designs: this work was never published (the albums of drawings are now in the library of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden), and he turned to the study of palms. As he notes in the introduction to the present work: "Aux Orchidées j'ai sacrifié les joies de ma jeunesse, aux Palmiers les loisirs l'âge mûr" [To Orchids I sacrificed the joys of my youth, to Palms the leisure of middle age]. He served as director of the Manaos botanical museum from 1883-1889, and was the first director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro from 1889 until his death in 1909. Despite his almost ceaseless travelling within his own country, the only trip he ever made to Europe was to oversee the publication of the present work. That Barbosa Rodrigues should choose Belgium to publish his work is perhaps at first sight surprising, but Belgium in general, and Ghent and Brussels in particular were, at the time, world-renowned centres of excellence in the fields of botanical research and publishing. As the present work so ably demonstrates, a number of the best botanical chromolithographers in the world were then working in Brussels.       Vienna: Mitteilungen der Vereinigung Bildener Künstler Österreichs, 1903. Small quarto. (14)ff. One of 500 copies. With thirteen color woodcut illustrations, twelve of them full page (one for each month of the year) by Karl Müller, Wilhelm List, Alfred Roller, Koloman Moser, Ferdinand Andri, Leopold Stoba, Emil Orlik, and Max Kurzweil. Calendars and decorative borders designed by Roller. Roller's lettering was a major influence on the graphic artist Wes Wilson, best known for his psychedelic rock concert posters for the Fillmore in the 1960s. Ver Sacrum was the major publication of the Vienna Secession movement, a group of artists who banded together in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century to challenge what they saw as the conservative, academic bent of the city's art establishment. Their membership included the artists named above, as well as Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and others. Ver Sacrum was published from 1898 to 1903, running essays on art theory, in addition to original artwork by the members and other artists whose work influenced them. In conjunction with the magazine, a yearly calendar was published, this being the last of them. In printed, illustrated wrappers, which show some toning and a small split at the top of the spine, else near fine. A superb example of design and printing from members of the Wiener Werkstätte.

        Queer Things About Japan

He was responsible for the considerable expansion of the family's retail and wholesale drapery firm between 1892 and 1927. Educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, he joined the successful business in Wigmore Street, London, which had been run by his grandfather and father. His restructuring activities led to the splitting of the manufacturing from the retail side of the business, under the name Debenham & Freebody (Freebody was the maiden name of his grandmother). He effected a merger with Marshall & Snelgrove as well as a takeover of Harvey Nichols. He was noted for his paternalistic attitude towards his staff, providing medical and educational support. He was also a pioneer in the dairy industry. On his retirement he sold most of his shares in the firm for £1.8M, so severing his family's connections with the retail chain that still bears his name. He was created a Baronet, of Bladen in the County of Dorset, in 1931 (Wikipedia).

The uncommon first edition of Russell's landmark work in mathematical logic, in which theory of logicism is put forth and in which Russell introduces that which is now known as "Russell's Paradox". The work constitutes the forerunner of Russell and Whitehead's monumental "Principia Mathematica", and it seminally influenced logical thought and theories of the foundations of mathematics at this most crucial time for the development of modern mathematical and philosophical logic."The present work has two main objects. One of these, the proof that all pure mathematics deals exclusively with concepts definable in terms of a very small number of fundamental logical concepts, and that its propositions are deducible from a very small number of fundamental logical principles, is undertaken in Parts II. - VI. Of this Volume, and will be established by strict symbolic reasoning in Volume II. ... The other object of the work, which occupies Part I., is the explanation of the fundamental concepts which mathematics accepts as indefinable. ..." (Russell, Preface, p. (III)).At the age of 27, in 1898, Russell began working on the book that became "The Principles of Mathematics". He originally set out to investigate the contradiction that is inherent in the nature of number, and he originally imagined doing this from a Hegelian standpoint. However, after having read Whitehead's "Universal Algebra", Russell gave up his Hegelian approach and began working on a book that was to be entitled "An Analysis of Mathematical Reasoning". This book never appeared, as he gave it up in 1900, but much of it is what lies at the foundation of "The Principles of Mathematics". After having attended a congress in Paris in 1899, where Peano was present, Russell began rewriting large parts of the work, now with the aim of proving that all of mathematics could be reduced to a few logical concepts, that that which is called mathematics is in reality nothing but later deductions from logical premises. And thus he had developed his landmark thesis that mathematics and logic are identical; a thesis that came to have a profound influence on logic and the foundations of mathematics throughout the 20th century.Since the congress, Russell had worked with the greatest of enthusiasm, and he finished the manuscript on the 31st of December 1900. However, in the spring of 1901, he discovered "The Contradiction", or as it is now called, "Russell's Paradox". Russell had been studying Cantor's proof, and in his own words, the paradox emerged thus: "Before taking leave of fundamental questions, it is necessary to examine more in detail the singular contradiction, already mentioned, with regard to predicates not predictable of themselves. Before attempting to solve this puzzle, it will be well to make some deductions connected with it, and to state it in various different forms. I may mention that I was led to endeavour to reconcile Cantor's proof that there can be no greatest cardinal number with the very plausible supposition that the class of all termes (which we have seen to be essential to all formal propositions) has necessarily the greatest possible number of members." (p. 101). The class of all classes that are not members of themselves, is this class a member of itself or not? The question was unanswerable (if it is, then it isn't, and if it isn't, then it is) and thus a paradox, and not just any paradox, this was a paradox of the greatest importance. Since, when using classical logic, all sentences are entailed by contradiction, this discovery naturally sparked a huge number of works within logic, set theory, foundations of mathematics, philosophy of mathematics, etc. Russell's own solution to the problem was his "theory of types", also developed in 1903.In December 1902 Russell had come to the point where he could write a preface, and the book finally appeared in May 1903. It was printed in merely 1.000 copies, and although it was well received, it was not a bestseller at its appearance. By 1909 the last copies of the first run were at the bookbinders. However, the book did play an enormous role in the development of mathematical and philosophical logic as well as the foundation of mathematics throughout the 20th century. Wittgentein's immense interest in the philosophy of logic stems from his reading of the present work and from Frege's "Foundations of Arithmetic", and no logician could neglect the impact of this seminal work, which still counts as one of the most important philosophical and logical works of the 20th century. The book also played an important part in spreading the works of Cantor and Frege to the English-speaking world. In 1903 the Spectator wrote "we should say that Mr. Russell has an inherited place in literature or statesmanship waiting for him if he will condescend to come down to the common day." Shearman's review in Mind hailed it as the most important work since Boole's "Laws of Thought". "Bertrand Arthur William Russell (b.1872 - d.1970) was a British philosopher, logician, essayist, and social critic, best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy. His most influential contributions include his defense of logicism (the view that mathematics is in some important sense reducible to logic), and his theories of definite descriptions and logical atomism. Along with G.E. Moore, Russell is generally recognized as one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Along with Kurt Gödel, he is also regularly credited with being one of the two most important logicians of the twentieth century." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).Russell had actually planned to write a second volume of the work, but as the contents of this further development would overlap considerably with the further research that Whitehead had undertaken after his "Universal Algebra", which he also planned two write a second volume of, the two great logicians decided to collaborate on that which became the "Principia Mathematica", which appeared 1910-13

One 8vo leaf of handwritten notes to the work laid in loose at front, these presumably in the hand of W.K.C. Guthrie. Many marginal marginal annotations and underlinings throughout, all in pencil (presumably Guthrie's). A very nice and tight copy. Uncut. XXVII, (1), 232 pp.. The seminal first edition of Moore's main work, his hugely influential "Principia Ethica", which helped found analytic philosophy and introduced and named the "naturalistic fallacy". The present copy has belonged to the famous English classical scholar and poet, Francis Macdonald Cornford (1874-1943), who is considered an expert on Greek philosophy, and is annotated throughout, presumably by the great Scottish classical scholar, William Keith Chambers Guthrie (1906-81), whose "History of Greek Philosophy" remains an absolute classic within the field."Moore's "Principia Ethica" (1903) is a landmark in the history of ethics. Its impact and influence on subsequent ethical theory, at least in Anglo-American philosophy, have been tremendous. His impact on Anglo-American philosophy in the 20th century must be said to be nearly unsurpassed. "Principia Ethica" is the most important of Moore's works. In this work, he makes use of analysis to establish the main doctrines of the book, and thereby lays one of the cornerstones of analytic philosophy. Moore here applies logic to ethics and shows us how this can provide a better foundation for ethics. Starting out with showing that analysis will reveal to us that "good" is a simple, non-natural, and indefinable property, which cannot itself be defined and analyzed, because it is not a complex object that can be divided, but a simple object of thought, Moore defines ethics as an inquiry into what is good. He furthermore shows how sometimes false premises in the definition of good lead to false conclusions about ethical behavior, and he introduces his "naturalistic fallacy", which is defined as the error of assuming that "good" can be defined by naming various properties of things which we believe to be good. "Naturalism", according to Moore falsely assumes to have defined "good" and is therefore unable to provide any logical reason for any principle of ethics."It appears to me that in Ethics, as in all other philosophical studies, the difficulties and disagreements, of which history is full, are mainly due to a very simple cause: namely to the attempt to answer questions, without first discovering precisely WHAT question it is which you desire to answer. " (Moore, Preface, p. VIII). Francis Macdonald Cornford is a famous and very well esteemed classical scholar, also renowned for his poetry. He was a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1899 and taught here from 1902. In 1931 he became Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy and in 1937 he was elected Fellow of the British Academy. He was married to Charles Darwin's granddughter, Frances Darwin, later Frances Macdonald Cornford.William Keith Chambers Guthrie was and ramains a famous classical scholar, best known for for his obligatory work "History of Greek Philosophy" which is still used in the basic teaching of Greek philosophy at many universities throughout the world. Having been brought up in London, Guthrie went up to Cambridge in 1925 and here won the Eric Evan Spier scholarship to Trinity College. He was a brilliant student, and among his supervisors was Francis Cornford. He was placed in the first class of both Parts of the Classical Tripos, with distinction in Part two, and he was awarded the Carven Prize. After graduating, he bagan a postgraduate career at Trinity College, which he left in 1930, when he took up a fellowship at Peterhouse. In 1939 he was appointed university Orator. After the war, where he served in the Intelligence Corps, he returned to Cambridge, where he was much in demand due to his orating skills, and he gave encomia in Latin in the honer of e.g. Churchill and Eisenhower. He followed Cornford as Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy in 1952, and like him also became Fellow of the Bristish Academy. In 1957 he became Master of Downing College, Cambridge, which he remained throughout the rest of his life. In 1950 he edited an edition of Francis Cornford's essays under the title "The Unwritten Philosophy".There is no doubt that Guthrie viewed Cornford as his mentor, and it is of great interest to see the two great scholars, the mentor and the brilliant student, united here in this seminal work of philosophy and ethics, which must have had the interest of both. There are numerous sceptial remarks in the margins and numerous corrections and commentaries that are of great interest, providing us with the specialized classical scolars view on the thoughts that have had the greatest impact on Anglo-American ethical thought. Both Cornford and Guthrie followed the doctrine of reading and interpreting the ancient philosophers against their own historical background, and in this they both broke ground, infuencing later generations of classical philosophers as well as historical philosophers in general

In 1899 the author organized an expedition towards the North Pole. In spring he arrived in the Norwegian capital Christiania (the present day Oslo) with 10 companions. The duke acquired the Jason, a steam whaler of 570 tons, renamed it Stella Polare ("Pole Star") & took the ship on the expedition through the frozen Artic Sea. The members of the expedition sought to reach the North Pole by way of Novaya Zemyla, and the Franz Joseph Archipelago. They sailed as far north as possible, and then continued their trek by sledge. While they did not reach the North Pole, they did reach the highest latitude ever attained by sledge at that time. Both volumes covers slightly bumped and marked, inner hinges beginning to crack, tissue paper guards brown as usual. Contents clean. Very Good.

Although ostensibly a refutation of the doctrine that to be is to be perceived, which Moore took to be central in all arguments for the Idealist view that reality is spiritual, it is also a vindication of the common-sense notion that what is experienced is often distinct from and logically independent of our experience of it as well as a vindication of analysis as a method for discerning constituents of certain complexes in the world. Basic to Moore's refutation of Idealism is the rejection of the logical doctrine that all relations, including that of the object and subject of experience, are internal. Yellow and the sensation of yellow are not only distinct, but the latter also involves and external relation between consciousness which is mental and yellow which is not. When Wittgenstein claims that the limits of language are the limits of the world (the early Wittgenstein - Tractatus published 1921) and considers the possibility of private language (the later Wittgenstein - Philosophical Investigations - published 1953), it is continually idealism that is at stake, and the question of the idealism (or the refutation of idealism) in the works of Wittgenstein is a highly debated and often not agreed upon point. Wittgenstein must have read Moore's important work on the subject, before he wrote his own works, as it appeared many years earlier, and as he evidently had a copy of the off-print
