TWO OFFPRINTS: "Radium and Other Radioactive Substances With a Consideration of Phosphorescent and Fluorescent Substances. The Properties and Applications of Selenium and the Treatment of Disease by the Ultra Violet Light" Offprint from Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1903, pp. 1-64 WITH "Edison's Tungstate of Calcium Lamp. The Nernst Lamp. Radium, Polonium and Actinium" (Signed & Inscribed to Nobel Laureate Henri Becquerel) Offprint from Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Vol. XIX, 1902, pp. 473-48

AIEE, New York - FIRST EDITIONS OF 2 RARE OFFPRINTS (1st separate ed) BY WILLIAM J. HAMMER. THE 1903 IS THE 1st PRINTING OF THE LECTURE WHICH LATER THAT SAME YEAR WOULD BECOME "THE 1st BOOK PUBLISHED ON RADIUM" (Smithsonian Archive). THE 2nd OFFPRINT IS A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO BECQUEREL. FURTHER, IT CONTAINS A 2 PAGE APPENDIX BY PIERRE CURIE WRITTEN THE SAME YEAR THE CURIES SUCCESSFULLY ISOLATED RADIOACTIVE RADIUM SALTS. Hammer carried on a "lifelong association with the foremost scientists of his day -- Edison, Bell, Maxim, the Curies, the Wright brothers, and others" (ibid). In April 1903 the pioneering American electrical engineer William Joseph Hammer delivered a lecture, "Radium and Other Radioactive Substances?" at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. He included 38 slides, most photographic; 32 are included in the offprint with no evidence any are missing. Many are photos of scanned images of mice; some photos of lab equipment. The printed book - issued after the lecture and offprint - has 39 photos and is 72 pages in length; the offprint is 64 pages but represents the lecture as given. In Paris in 1902, Hammer visited the Curies. "They gave him 9 tubes of radium and 1 of polonium to bring back to the US? [Once back]? Hammer applied his radium-luminous materials to 30 different objects: [ everything from luminous dials for clocks to radium luminous gun sights]. He did not patent the invention due to the scarcity and high cost of radium; later in an important suit involving foreign and US patents of radium-luminous materials, his testimony and that of other noted scientists and professionals of the day who had visited his home and laboratory proved that his work completely anticipated that of all inventors in the US and abroad" (ibid). Prior to seeing the Curies but more so after his return to America, Hammer lectured on what he was learning: his 38 lectures on the Curie's work played a large role in disseminating scientific information about radium to the American scientific community and the general public. At the 1903 lecture, Hammer displayed the tubes the Curies had given him. He spoke at length of the things implied by the lecture's title - radioactivity, selenium, and light, but also on the Curies, Röntgen, Becquerel, Dewar, Rutherford, Kelvin, Thomson and Finsen; on various radioactive materials; on alpha, beta, gamma, and X-rays including radiographs of mice; and on experiments into the lethal effects both of X-raysand of radioactive sources. Hammer's 1902 lecture, given prior to visiting the Curies, discusses the Edison X-ray lamp, the Nernst lamp and gives a short review of the properties of radium. Concerned with accuracy, Hammer asked P Curie to critique his talk and add any information on radium he thought relevant. Two pages of Curie's notes appear as an 'Appendix' in this offprint. The William J. Hammer collection is enormous and is divided among the Smithsonian, the National Museum of American History, and the National Air and Space Museum (another subject of interest to him). A WorldCat, etc. search finds copies in institutional locations of the 1903 lecture in its journal issue and later as as the first book published on radium. I could, however, find no reference to a copy of the offprint in any library - meaning it is rare. CONDITION: New York: AIEE (both 1902 & 1903 offprint). Both 8vos. 1902: [1], pp. 473-481, [1]. 1903: pp. 1-64. The 1903 offprint was either issued without a light orange wrap present on the 1902 offprint or was issued without it. Both have a small sticker with a letter and number written on them in an early hand affixed to the upper right corner (see scans); the 1902 on the rear wrap as well. The 1902 is slightly toned at the edges of the front wrap. Both offprints are in very good to near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

        APRIL TWILIGHTS.

Boston:: Richard G. Badger, The Gorham Press,. 1903.. First edition of her first book; a "vanity press" production of thirty-six poems. Cather reportedly destoryed what remained of the edition in 1908. INSCRIBED, "Mr. J. W. Rankin / From an old friend / Willa Silbert Cather / New York / May Second / 1914." Cather moved to Pittsburgh in 1896 and taught at Central High School for one year. Rankin also taught there, and we assume that is where they formed their friendship. (She moved on to Alleghany High School in 1897 where she taught English and Latin, and became the head of the English department. She left Pittsburgh in 1906.) Recased with the original paper-covering laid down and with the original printed labels retained. Both labels are darkened, the front appears to have had the lettering touched up, and the spine label has been mounted upside-down (with the lettering running down instead of up) and slightly beneath its original location. Not ideal but quite scarce inscribed. .

A. Bethe, G. v. Bergmann, G. Embden, A. Hrsg.: Handbuch der normalen und pathologischen Physiologie: 7. Band / Erste Hälfte ..., C. J. ROTHBEROER: Allgemeine Physiologie des Herzens, p.618Rare . First Edition! Karel Frederick Wenckebach (1864-1940), a Dutch physician, was a friend of Einthoven and of Mackenzie, and his pioneer work on the arrhythmias was done like Mackenzie's with the polygraph before the advent of the clinical electrocardiograph. He was the first to recognise extrasystoles in man and "Wenckebach's period" in partial heart block. He was professor of Medicine at Groningen, later at Strasbourg and finally at Vienna."         Chien-Caillou

Carteret, Trésor I, p. 156. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Goya had already established his reputation as a painter to the nobility and to the Royal Court of Spain when he produced his first major series of prints, the iconic Los Caprichos, which comprises 80 aquatints. Los Caprichos is a complex and enigmatic figurative series, which opens as a wry commentary on the follies of human desire and a perverted social order, and closes with images drawn from a dark realist fantasy of spectres and goblins that come to life to torment the living through temptation and deceit. Some of Goya's most recognisable images were created in this series, including his graphic masterpiece El sueño de la razon produce monstruos (The sleep of reason produces monsters). This image, instantly familiar and arresting, signals the transition to the haunting imagery of the second half of the series, in which Goya's imagination is fully unleashed. Los Caprichos was printed in an edition of fewer than 300 copies and first offered for sale in Madrid in 1799. Only 27 sets sold. In 1803 Goya wrote to the Royal Court and offered King Charles IV the remainder of the sets as well as the original etching plates in return for a stipend to allow his son Francisco Javier to travel. Charles agreed, and the plates made their way into the Calcografía Nacional, the National Engraving Centre established in 1789 to oversee Royal commissions and collect graphic work. Later in life, Goya expressed relief that the King had accepted the gift - he had feared the unwanted attention of the Inquisition, since some of the images relate to the Church. Goya died in 1828. In 1855 the Calcografía printed a second impression of the plates in an edition known to scholars as 'very small', perhaps only a few dozen sets (Harris, Tomas. Goya : engravings and lithographs. San Francisco : Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 2001). It was the re-publication of Goya's series which ignited wider interest in his aquatints, and a third impression was made from the plates, again in numbers described as 'very small'. Around 1878 the Calcografía bevelled the edges of the plates, steel-faced their surface and printed off another edition, the fourth, of 65 copies. The Calcografía would go on to print no less than eleven separate editions, the last - the twelfth edition - as late as 1937. All of these later printings display wear to the plate, and in this image, the text within the image is mostly lost. A later impression of one of the greatest prints in Western art.

        A Prefect's Uncle

A & C Black, London 1903 - 8vo, pp. 264. Original red pictorial boards, lettered in gilt and pale blue to front panel, and in red-on-gilt and gilt to spine. Very slightly cocked, light fading to spine, offsetting to endpapers, and minimal bumping to head of spine and corners, but a near fine copy for all that. Frontispiece and seven full-page illustrations by R. Noel Pocock. First edition, first issue of the author's second book, dedicated to Wodehouse's old school friend and lifelong correspondent, William (Bill) Townend. 'I have finished a school story of almost exactly the same length as The Pothunters, and can forward it immediately if you wish it. The title of the book is The Bishop's Uncle [later The Prefect's Uncle] and like The Pothunters it deals chiefly with the outdoor life of the public school. There is a great deal of cricket in the book, in fact, strictly speaking, it is nearly all cricket, for very little else except that game goes on in the Summer Term at school.' (PGW to publishers A&C Black, 8 December, 1902) Wodehouse's early school stories weren't just bought and shelved, they were read. And not just read but reread by schoolboys of all ages who were starting to seek them out. It's not surprising, then, that condition is often a problem with Wodehouse's early books. This copy, near fine with the binding tight, bucks that trend.

Photo Album]: Pamatnik 1902-03 [Austro-Hungarian Navy]

[Croatia] 1903 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 17" x 12". Custom cloth-covered portfolio album containing 38 stiff sheets with 165 gelatin silver photographs, and 28 mounted postcards. The photos measuring between 3.5" x 2.25" and 4" x 3". The sheets are hand titled in pen throughout. Near fine portfolio with part of the silk tie missing and modest wear to the extremities and hinges with fine and fresh images with only light bumping to the sheets. A portfolio album with photographs attractively arranged to commemorate service in the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Based in Pola, on the Adriatic (today the modern Croatian city of Pula), the Austro-Hungarian Navy (K.u.K. Kriegsmarine) was a major force in European naval affairs at the turn of the century and playing a role in international conflicts, such as the Boxer Rebellion in China. The person who created this album apparently served on three vessels during their tour, the Ironclad Warship SMS *Tegetthoff* (launched 1878), the Screw Corvette SMS *Saida* (launched 1878), and the pre-Dreadnought Monarch-class coastal defense ship SMS *Wien* (launched 1896). These three ships are each given separate photographic treatments, but a large number of other ships, both warships and commercial sailing vessels, are seen throughout the porfolio. Images capture shipboard life, torpedo boats, armaments training, naval maneuvers, shore life in Pula, a trip to the Near East, and naval visits to Dubrovnik and Gruz in Croatia, the Port of Piraeus (Athens), and Thessalonica in Greece, and the Greek Islands of Samos and Corfu. There are also a number of mounted postcards of various ships and locations, including a panorama of Pola signed by 25 sailors. About a dozen photos appear to have been captioned in the negative. A wonderfully comprehensive and uncommon view of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jim Cummins' Book Written by Himself

Reed, Denver 1903 - This is a good-only copy of this very scarce first edition, but very much enhanced by a gilt-stamped green leather box made by Corry McSpadden, decorated inside with marbled paper. The book itself is shaken, outwardly worn mostly around the spine, with some internal stitching loosening but no loose pages. The front free endpaper is a mess, as something was violently torn from it, probably a bookplate. It is missing the upper corner and a lg. hole in the center. Otherwise pages are toned but clean, and I find no foxing. Written by one of the least violent and notable members of the James and Quantrill gangs, who they say was so mild-mannered that he was not arrested even when he tried to turn himself in, and was never tried. 191 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
