New York: Macmillan Company. 1903. First. First edition. One corner a little bumped and the spine ends a little rubbed, else fine with the painted "snow" on the spine and front board (usually quiet worn) only very slightly rubbed, lacking the dustwrapper. One of the two great novels, along with White Fang, for which the author seems destined to be remembered. Superb Arts and Crafts binding by Curtis Walters, famed American binder who studied bookbinding with William Matthews, the Club Bindery and Stikeman. Hill and the author has painted dozens of expertly crafted heads of women in hats and bows; bee, boat, etc. throughout in a style reminiscent of Harrison Fisher, and he has inscribed the following poem and presentation on the copyright page: "To H. A. Mertz (minor author)- These culled flowers I entrust to you, So keep them ever warm with sun and fresh with dew. So shall you have a fragrant booked Bouquet, Some quiet nook a sweetening alway. Lee Fairchild." Spine somewhat rubbed at margin, expertly repaired, internally near fine.

A gorgeous softly rendered image of a woman in a white dress clutching a flower, a blue sea and coastal landscape in the distance. Signed in print "Marcus Stone. 1903" at lower left.         Marienlyst". Park mit ansteigendem Weg, der auf eine klassizistische Villa zuführt.

      - Aquarell und Bleistift, auf chamoisfarbenem Velin, links unten bezeichnet und datiert „Marienlyst. 9. Sept. 1903.". 34,7:24,7 cm.

Village Press] PRINTING: AN ESSAY . FROM "ARTS & CRAFTS ESSAYS BY MEMBERS OF THE ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBITION SOCIETY

Frederick W. Goudy and Will H. Ransom at the Village Press 1903 - [6], 16, [6]. Bound as issued in paper over boards and titled in red on the upper cover. Printed in black with red title in the Village type with ornamental 11-line opening initial. This copy has the press's first printer's mark below the colophon apparently omitted in a portion of this edition. The first book issued by Frederick and Bertha Goudy's Village Press and the first in its proprietary Village type. Ransom remarks that this choice "was both a gesture of acknowledgment to those two pioneers and a sort of credo, an indirect statement of the aims and ideals upon which the press was founded." Goudy was among the most important and prolific American type designers. The volumes issued from the Village Press show he was a capable book designer with a nod to William Morris (as almost all American private presses made in the first decade of the century) but with a somewhat more modern sensibility in type design. Light rubbing to the binding, particularly the spine; a bit of offsetting at the inner margin of the front pastedown; this first issue from the press is quite uncommon. Ransom 1, Cary 1.       Macmillan 1903 - Hardy, Thomas. THE DYNASTS: A Drama of the Napoleonic Wars, In Three Parts, Nineteen Acts, & One Hundred and Thirty Scenes. London: Macmillan, 1903-1906-1908. Three volumes. First Edition in publisher's original green cloth. First issue of Volume One (1903 title page integral, only 103 copies at most printed, expert repair to front inner hinge), first British issue of Volume Two (title page a cancel as found in all British first editions; some 1905 titles were found among the American issue), First Issue of Volume Three. Very Good copies (a little worn at the edges) in Very Good examples of ALL THREE ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS (some light restoration to corners and spines). Very rare in the original dust jackets and as nice a set of the first issue as we've seen. Hardy's interest in The Napoleonic Wars was most famously expressed in his 1880 novel THE TRUMPET MAJOR but also found expression in his poetry and here in his Magnum Opus, THE DYNASTS, which took him several decades of hard work to bring to fruition. THE DYNASTS is little read today but contains the best and most complete insight into of Hardy's world-view (as hinted at in the last line of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES when he invokes The President Of The Immortals as having finished his sport with Tess). Bookplate of distinguished previous owner on front paste-down all three volumes. Purdy pp. 119-135. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dresden, February 3, 1903. In black ink on stationery with watermark "Extra Superfine." In German (with translation). Draeseke thanks the musicologist Hans Volkmann belatedly for sending him a copy of his new book on the composer Robert Volkmann (1815-1883): "... I learned of your address [only] yesterday through my old friend, Geheimer Hofrat Stern. Perhaps it will be of interest to you that, while living in Lausanne, I have energetically championed [Robert Volkmann's Piano] trio in B-flat minor... [I wish] your book, devoted to the memory of such an excellent musician, the widest possible dissemination..." Slightly creased at upper edge.. "Early in his career Draeseke was among the most original of the composers associated with the New German school of Wagner and Liszt, but by the time of this essay [Die Konfusion in der Musik, 1906] he had become more conservative in style. He developed a distinct approach to harmony, and an idiosyncratic handling of voice leading..." Alan H. Krueck in Grove online Robert Volkmann's Piano Trio in B-flat minor, op. 5 (1850), mentioned in the letter "was championed by Liszt, to whom it was dedicated, and admired by Bülow and Wagner." Thomas M. Brawley in Grove online Hans Volkmann's monograph on his great uncle Robert is considered to be one of his most significant works. Adolf Stern (1835-1907) was a poet and literary historian.

L'immunité dans les maladies infectieuses [title in Russian]

St. Petersburg, 1903. First edition in Russian. Text in Russian, translated from the original French. 1 vols. 8vo. Original wrapper spine and rear cover present, front wrapper perished. Inscribed Classic of Immunology First Russian edition of a classic of immunology, for which the author won a Nobel Prize in 1908, sharing it with Paul Ehrlich. This copy is inscribed (in Russian): "To Joseph Mankovich Krauzman in fond remembrance from Elia M. Paris 1903."According to the DSB, Metchnikoff, while in Paris in 1900, "began to write a large and comprehensive book, L'immunité dans les maladies infectieuses (1901). This book was a magnificent review of the entire field of both comparative and human immunology. The work was also, of course, a defense of the theory of phagocytosis, which the humoral theory of immunity seriously challenged. The work of the German bacteriologists, especially Emil Behring, Paul Ehrlich, and Robert Koch, which led to discovery of many new bacteria, toxins, and antitoxins, strengthened the beliefs of those who held to a noncellular theory of immunity ... In 1908 Metchnikoff and Ehrlich shared the Nobel Prize for their researches illuminating the understanding of immunity ... "
