Machen was inspired to write The Great God Pan by his experiences at the ruins of a pagan temple in Wales. What would become the first chapter of the novella was published in the magazine The Whirlwind in 1890. Machen later extended The Great God Pan and it was published as a book alongside another story, "The Inmost Light", in 1894. The novella begins with an experiment to allow a woman named Mary to see the supernatural world. This is followed by an account of a series of mysterious happenings and deaths over many years surrounding a woman named Helen Vaughan. At the end, the heroes confront Helen and force her to kill herself. She undergoes a series of supernatural transformations before dying and she is revealed to be the child of Mary and the god Pan." BRAHMS, Johannes 1833-1897
3 pp. of a bifolium (176 x 230 mm). In black ink with autograph note in Bruch's hand in pencil dated Ischl, June 2, 1894 to upper outer corner of first page. In German (with translation). Brahms enthusiastically responds to Bruch's request for a contribution in order to commission a monument to the recently-deceased German music historian Philipp Spitta. "So deeply touched and moved by Spitta's sudden death, as I seldom am by the death of a man, it comes to me as a gentle consolation that I may take part in this proof of love and adoration for him... I'll send you 500 Mk for now, of course waiting for more news about your beautiful project. I am especially pleased that you are contacting such a master as Hildebrandt[!]." Slightly worn and browned; creased at folds with small split to lower margin; small tape repair to upper blank margin of central fold. Briefwechsel Vol. 3, pp. 107-108. Bruch and Brahms had not been on good terms for some years, but their differences were put aside for the death of Spitta. This short letter from Brahms had a strong impact on Bruch, who wrote to the publisher Simrock: "It is a beautiful letter, so warm and deeply felt - one sees once again that when it comes to it, this strange and significant human being has his heart in the right place." Field: Max Bruch: His Life and Works, p. 259. Spitta (1841-1894) pioneered the burgeoning field of musicology, most notably with his epic biography of J.S. Bach. Upon his death, Max Bruch, Heinrich von Herzogenberg, and Joseph Joachim sought to pay for an appropriate gravestone, and Bruch wrote to Brahms a … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Ross, Percy [pseudonym for Lilian Duff].
1894. London: Digby, Long & Co., [1894]. 8vo, 3 vols.: [iv], 225, [3, blank], 8 (ads, dated October 1894); [iv], 215, [1, blank], 8 (ads); [iv], 225, [3, blank], 8 (ads) pp. Original blue cloth, backstrips lettered in gilt, covers blocked in blind; light rubbing to the extremities, light foxing including titles, a very good copy. § Extremely rare first edition and a completely overlooked Victorian triple-decker novel by a woman, published under a male pseudonym. It is the fourth and final novel of the little-known Lilian Duff (1863-1922). What is known of her seems to come solely from census records: she was the daughter of a Cheshire merchant, later the wife of a barrister-turned-Oxford tutor, she was a teacher herself and the mother of three children, one of whom was army officer and colonial administrator Sir Charles Patrick Duff (1889-1972) (victorianresearch.org). Three of her novels are social dramas; the novel at hand being a classic tale of family intrigue and turbulent romance with a strong Aesthetic streak. (The fourth, fascinatingly, is a fictionalized biography of a 16th century French alchemist.) As Sotheran's write, "The Eccentrics is fortunate in that the title describes not only the main characters of the novel, but also the setting, prose, and probably the author... In wonderfully and needlessly dramatic fashion, the story is a classic tale woven of family intrigue, fainting ladies, and dark inheritances... Typical of novels contemporary to it, the main topic of discussion throughout the volumes is the possibility of marriage for the female protagonists, an … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

J.F.C. Fuller
Malvern, England, 1894. Two hand written, and drawn, cards by JFC Fuller, or Fritz Fuller as he signs off. They both would appear to have been written in 1894, when he was 15 years old. The first is a birthday card to his younger brother, Lionel, with his original pen and ink drawings of a ship called The Eider, a rocket propelling a man onto the ship! and a life buoy with a birthday greeting within it. Inside there is a further drawing of a birthday cake and coats of arms and toy soldiers. The letter talks of life at his school, Malvern, and what his brother should play with when he gets his presents. He says that he must write to his other brother Walter, who is later known as AWF Fuller. It is signed "I must now say Good bye, Your loving brother, Fritz Fuller" His name is double-underline for emphasis. (one wonders what a hand writing analyst would make of that!) The second letter, headed with the address at Malvern College, again to his younger brother, Lionel, is a short note telling him a little about the school and wishing him well at his own new school and signed Fritz Fuller. On the front, evidently by Fritz, is a colourful picture which is a caricature of a foreign soldier eating a bowl of soup, quite skilfully done in coloured inks for a 15 year old schoolboy, as he was at the time, with the caption underneath: "Soup Maigre" Both are original and unique pieces and perhaps a taste, a small indication of the character of the later man. WOMEN'S HISTORY & LITERATURE] HOLT, L[uther] Emmett
D. Appleton and Company, 1894. First Edition. Influential manual for mothers and nurses by Holt (1855-1924), an American author, physician, and pioneer in the field of pediatrics, who helped shape the New York Babies Hospital into the leading pediatric facility of its time. The book was expanded from Holt's Catechism for Nurses (1893), a pamphlet prepared for nursery-maids during their four months training at the Babies Hospital. "The nurses studied the catechism and when they graduated took it with them. There followed requests for copies from their employers and the supply was soon exhausted. It was apparent there was a popular demand for something of the kind. The catechism was expanded, and in 1894 The Care and Feeding of Children made its appearance...Probably no one would have been more surprised than Dr. Holt or his publishers had they been told that they were launching a volume that was to go through seventy-five printings, and which was to be translated into Spanish, Russian and Chinese...The book became the mainstay of many a worried mother and exerted no inconsiderable influence on the profession as well, for the practitioners had to keep abreast of the pediatric knowledge which the mothers possessed" (DUFFUS, R.L. L. Emmett Holt. NY, 1940, pp.116-117). Prior to the publication of The Care and Feeding of Children, there was no standard text for pediatric care in print for laymen or medical professionals. A revolutionary volume, written in clear, simple language, providing an orderly presentation of pediatric knowledge which empowered women to care for their child … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

BRAHMS, Johannes 1833-1897
1894. 3 pp. of a bifolium (176 x 230 mm). "So deeply touched and moved by Spitta's sudden death, as I seldom am by the death of a man, it comes to me as a gentle consolation that I may take part in this proof of love and adoration for him. Bach. Upon his death, Max Bruch, Heinrich von Herzogenberg, and Joseph Joachim sought to pay for an appropriate gravestone, and Bruch wrote to Brah … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Kipling, Rudyard
London: Macmillan and Co., 1894, 1895 Two volumes. First editions, first printings. The Jungle Book (1894) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. The Second Jungle Book (1895) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Both volumes bound in the original publisher's navy cloth, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green coated endpapers. Both volumes near fine with some a touch of wear to the spine ends, faint scattered foxing to some of the margins, small former owner signature to front blanks, else very clean. Overall, an excellent set with bright gilt designs. The Jungle Books are collections of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
