A very good copy. First and only edition in English of this uncommon late Khedival-period course-book for Cairene students, originally published in Arabic the previous year as Ta'rikh al-'Arab wa-adabihim, scarce in commerce and just five copies in UK libraries, of which two are in the British Library. Van Dyck was an American diplomat who served as consular clerk and vice-consul in Beirut and Cairo, taught at Cairo's Khediviah (Khedival) school and translated a number of early Arabic texts into English, including Avicenna's Compendium on the Soul. He was the son of Cornelius van Dyck, a missionary best remembered for his Arabic translation of the Bible. For the author see Ruth Kark, American Consuls in the Holy Land 1832–1914, p. 62.         LA FEMME A PARIS. NOS CONTEMPORAINES, NOTES SUCCESSIVES SUR LES PARISIENNES DE CE TEMPS DANS LEURS DIVERS MILIEUX, ÉTATS ET CONDITIONS

Paris, Ancienne Maison Quantin, Librairies-Imprimeurs réunis, May & Motteroz 1894 - 1 volume grand in-8 (28,5 x 19,5 cm) de (4)-VI-328-(6) pages, couverture illustrée en couleurs dessinées par Léon Rudnicki.

Swinburne:In a land of clear colours and stories,In a region of shadowless hours,Where the earth has a garment of glories,And a murmur of musical flowers. Prijs: ?3.850,- (incl. lijst).

The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book previously owned by Churchill's friend and publisher, Nelson Doubleday

London: Macmillan and Co., 1894. First edition. Hardcover. John Lockwood Kipling. This is a compelling set of British first editions of perhaps Kipling's most famous works – the first and second Jungle Books. These copies were previously owned by Churchill's friends and publishers, Frank and Nelson Doubleday, and apparently used by Nelson to prepare Doubleday's 1946 editions. Ironically, Kipling's quintessential tales of India were conceived in Vermont, where Kipling and his father, John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) “worked together in the closest harmony… as the two sat smoking their pipes and plotting out fresh stories together.” (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p.328) Here Mowgli was born, the infant found by Father Wolf, saved from Shere Khan, and tutored in the Laws of the Jungle by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. “The pen took charge, and I watched it begin to write stories about Mowgli and the animals, which later grew into the Jungle Books.” Kipling had left India for the last time in 1891, but “With his father's guidance he learned to ‘undo what the North has done' and so let back in all ‘the sights and the sounds and smells / That ran with our youth in the eye of the Sun' – the flotsam and jetsam of twelve years of Indian living – just long enough to create the celebration of childhood that is The Jungle Book…” (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p. 364) The Jungle Book was published in 1894, seven stories and seven poems with eight of the illustrations by the author's father. The Second Jungle Book was published in 1895, eight stories and eight poems, this time with thirty-seven illustrations by the author's father. Both first editions are bound in matching blue cloth, strikingly illustrated and printed in gilt on the spines and front covers, the contents with dark bluish green endpapers, illustration plates, and all edges trimmed and gilt. The Jungle Book is first printing, with “R. & R. Clark” as printer on p. 212 (as opposed to ‘R. & R. Clark Ltd.'). First English edition of The Second Jungle Book is confirmed by 238 pages of text, ‘The King's Ankus' stopping abruptly at line 8, p139, with 515 words missing. (Richards, A76, p.80 and A85, p.87) These copies came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. (1933-2015), son of Nelson Doubleday (1889-1949), and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday (1862-1934), Kipling's friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday met Kipling while working for Charles Scribners Sons. They struck an intimate, lifelong friendship. Kipling nicknamed Doubleday "Effendi", a play on his initials - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946, as was Nelson Jr., from 1978 to 1983. Each of these first edition volumes bears a small, printed slip of paper on the title page with new publisher information reading, in three lines, "Doubleday & Company, Inc. | Garden City New York | 1946". The slips were pasted over the original publication information (though both have since come loose). Doubleday & Company published an edition of these books in 1946, the last year of Nelson's presidency. The title page of the 1946 edition matches those of these British first editions with the pasted-on slips, making it likely to the point of certainty that these particular volumes were used as mockups by Nelson Doubleday. Condition is very good minus. The bindings are square and tight with some fraying to spine ends and dulling of spine gilt. The contents remain crisp and complete and the books feel unread. We note all illustrations present, bright page edge gilt, light intermittent spotting (barely noticeable in The Jungle Book), and cosmetic cracking to the endpapers at the gutters that does not impact binding integrity. Additional 1946 edition mock-up notations include title in pencil on The Jungle Book frontispiece recto, pencil strikethrough of “All rights reserved” on both title pages, and brief pencil notation to the upper left front free endpaper verso.         OMEGA: THE LAST DAYS OF THE WORLD ..

New York: The Cosmopolitan Publishing Company, [1894].. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-287 [288: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank], numerous illustrations by Jean Paul Laurens, Saunier, Meaulle, Vogel and others, original two-part blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition in English. A translation of LA FIN DU MONDE, Flammarion's best and most imaginative novel, a panoramic view of humanity from the twenty-fifth century to the far future, Stapledonian in scope. "A work of remarkable scope and vision, one of the earliest and most ambitious cosmic histories, certainly worth reading, if only as a historical document. Of considerable historical importance, since it was probably read and absorbed by authors as diverse as W. H. Hodgson and Olaf Stapledon." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 778. LA FIN DU MONDE is Flammarion's "boldest scientific romance ... an epic of the future. Although it is as much essay as story, this is a notable work, akin to H. G. Wells's THE TIME MACHINE (1895) and William Hope Hodgson's THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND (1908) in presenting a striking vision of the end of the world." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 432. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-73 and (2004) II-407. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 639. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 299. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 84.         The Photographic Atlas of the Normal Spectrum. London: William Wesley & Son. 1894

London: William Wesley & Son, 1894 FIRST EDITION. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE. In the late 19th century, George Cornish Sutton Higgs, a British watchmaker and optician proficient in the sciences, built an extraordinary spectrograph and employed it to greatly advance the application of photography to the study of solar spectra. The result of that work is offered here -- "one of the best atlases of the solar spectrum then produced" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers, 505).   Higgs formulated no new theories to explain the natural world, he did use his skill in optics to "construct one of the finest solar spectrographs then in existence"; he then used that invention to follow "in the footsteps of others, [gradually working to refine] their techniques with greater care and precision" (ibid, 506). " Higgs conducted his studies in a room of his small suburban house, using homemade apparatus. The accuracy of his line determinations and quality of his photographs were praised by leading British, Continental, and American astronomers and physicists (ibid).   The heart of Higgs's spectrograph was a concave grating "mounted on one side of a circular table, ten feet two inches in diameter" (Payne, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 9, 379). "The light enters from the right into the slit, is guided towards the grating in the back and from there onto the photographic plate in the box at the far left. Moving the slit along the big semicircle by means of an intricate pulley system causes different orders of the spectrum to fall onto the photographic plate. The path of the light, fully enclosed in card boxes, shields the plate from stray light" (Hentschel, Mapping the Spectrum: Techniques of Visual Representation in Research, 240).   Higgs was chiefly interested in photographically recording the Sun's spectrum at different solar elevations, and under various weather conditions, to investigate the effects of atmospheric absorption. He designed his own induction coil for producing comparison spectra and perfected methods of sensitizing photographic plates, using the bisulphite compounds of alizarine blue and coeruline to reduce exposure times. In Higgs's day, the red end of the spectrum was notoriously difficult to photograph, due to the relative insensitivity of plates to the longer wavelengths. After much experimentation, Higgs was able to obtain plates with all of the definition normally associated with the violet end of the spectrum (ibid) "[Higgs] also perfected methods of eliminating visible grain from the enlargements of his spectral photographs" (Biographical, 506). In the 1880s, Higgs began publishing his work on solar spectroscopy in leading scientific journals; in the 1890s, his work was complete enough that he published two editions of his Photographic Atlas of the Normal Solar Spectrum, this being the first edition.   Additionally, Higgs "made a determination of the Sun's rotation period from spectroscopic observations, [showing] that by superimposing photographs of spectra taken from the eastern and western limbs, there was a slight displacement due to the Doppler effect, while the atmospheric absorption lines were unchanged. Some of these plates illustrated the first edition of Higgs's Atlas" (ibid).   Higgs's accomplishment was praised throughout the scientific community. After carefully comparing two other photographic maps of the solar spectrum, one by Rowland and one by Rutherford, to those of Higgs, a contemporary expressed his admiration as follows:   "The most striking feature of these [photographs], at first sight, is the extreme clearness with which every line stands out on the bright background, nothing hazy or obscure, the whole a perfect marvel of distinctness and sharpness of definition. All must admire the fine solar spectrum […] by Professor L. M. Rutherford; and yet viewing this grand work, and then turning to the enlargements of Mr. Higgs, is like looking at the delicate outlines of a fine public edifice first through a November fog, and then in the brilliant sunshine of a clear spring morning" (Hentschel, 240).   Higgs "achieved this 'marvel of distinctness'… with a trick that helped him eliminate the granular structure of the silver in the original negatives. During exposure of the print, he purportedly moved the photographic plate parallel to the spectral lines, or else inserted a cylindrical lens in front of the enlarging lens. The effect of either method was to stretch out the lines and smooth out the grain in the background in a manner not unlike modern picture-enhancement techniques" (ibid, 240). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: William Wesley & Son. 4to. 9.5 by 4.25 inches (238 x 106mm). Small portfolio clamshell case with rubbing and scuffing at the edge tips and spine; bound in three-quarter calf over brown cloth; gilt-lettered on the front board. Within the case are 37 (of 38) spectrum photographs mounted on card stock, most depicting two 'rows' per card, some also with four rows. As well, the portfolio is complete save for the absence of the one plate. Every photograph is in near-fine to fine condition.

New York: Charles B. Reed, Publisher, 164, 166 & 168 Fulton St, 1894.. First edition. Published four years later in England as A SOUL ON FIRE (London: Bliss Sands & Co., 1898). "A Catholic, Marryat was fascinated by spiritualism which she frequently introduces into her novels. As a spiritualist she wrote the popular book THERE IS NO DEATH (1891)." - Sutherland, Victorian Fiction, p. 412. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 151 (citing the 1898 UK edition). The Pèlerinage notably collects the work of the first two men to photograph the holy cities of Arabia. Muhammad Sadiq Bey was an Egyptian military engineer who had performed the hajj several times as treasurer of the Egyptian mahmal, or official caravan. His photographs of Mecca and Medina, the first ever, appeared in his work Mash'al al-Mahmal ("The Torch of the Mahmal"), published in Cairo in 1881 and now with only two copies extant in libraries worldwide (NY Public Library and the National Library of Morocco). 'Abd al-Ghaffar was a medical doctor and the first Arab photographer of Mecca. He had been taught the craft by Dutch orientalist Snouck Hurgronje; his images were first published in Hurgronje's Bilder aus Mekka (1889). Burrell 725; Macro 2096. Not in Gay, Blackmer or Hamilton, The Arcadian Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

First edition. Marey. 8vo., 335 pp., with three leaves of plates, one folding. The text is further illustrated with 214 drawings, charts, graphs, and from b&w photographs. Later binding of quarter blue morocco and cloth with the spine in six compartments and title label in gilt. The original printed paper wrappers are moderately soiled and bound-in. Occasional scattered foxing. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the blank leaf. A very good copy. This title is one of the most famous works of Marey, and the culmination of 30 years of research into the scientific applications of motion-analysis. He further developed animated photography into a separate field of chronophotography, with his revolutionary idea to record several phases of movement on one photographic surface. His research on how to capture and display moving images had a profound influence upon Thomas Edison and Luis Lumière in the emerging field of cinematography. It is not without merit that this work is often credited as the first book on cinematography. See: Mannoni, Laurent, WHO'S WHO OF VICTORIAN CINEMA. Additionally, a fire destroyed a portion of the publisher's stock of this title. Marey's work was closely followed by his friend, Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon). In his autobiography, QUAND J'ÉTAIS PHOTOGRAPHE, beginning on p. 193, Nadar speaks of a visitor to his studio, Maunier DeFlore, "The Bee Tamer", who had presented his calming effects upon them in exhibitions in Marseille and Brussels. In chapter 14 of LE MOUVEMENT, Locomotion Dans L'Air: Vol des Insects, Marey illustrated the movement of the bee's wings while in flight. He had devised an intricate study where he tied a bee to a string allowing its wings free movement while one touched a rotating cylinder covered with a lightly blackened paper, enabling his graphic methodology. Coincidentally, Nadar referred to Marey's laboratory as "the beehive." This copy of LE MOUVEMENT is SIGNED and inscribed, " a Maunier DeFlore, hommage.... E. Marey." Garrison and Morton No. 643. Roosens and Salu No. 6833.

The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book

London: Macmillan and Co., 1894-1895 Two volumes. First editions, first printings. The Jungle Book (1894) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. The Second Jungle Book (1895) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Both volumes bound in the publisher's navy cloth, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green-gray coated endpapers. Very good or better, with leans to the spines, light rubbing to the spine ends, corners lightly bumped, faint soiling to the boards, Jungle Book with a former owner's 1894 inscription to a front flyleaf, Second Jungle Book with a subscription library bookplate to the front pastedown and a few faint spots to the endleaves, otherwise clean pages. Overall, a very attractive set. The Jungle Books are collections of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay.. Illus. by Kipling, John Lockwood. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.
