        Trip to the Moon

New York: F.M. Lupton, 1893 A Trip to the Moon signed by Neil Armstrong. 58 pp. Original wrappers. Several leaves stained, some wear. Printed on pulp paper. No. 36 of The Arm Chair Library, a ten cent weekly. Half morocco case. Signed by Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon. This classic of science fiction, turned into scientific fact by Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission, was first published as De la Terre à la Lune in 1865. Verne's reputation as the inventor of the science fiction novel rests primarily on From the Earth to the Moon. Verne's novel, set in post-Civil War America, presents the tale of the development and financing of a grand scheme to launch a manned vehicle to go to the Moon. The book was eerily accurate in its predictions concerning the feat. Verne described a three-man crew launched from Florida in a cylindro-conical vehicle called the Columbiad (Apollo 11's was the Columbia). Like Apollo 11, the vehicle used retrorockets, the men experienced weightlessness, and they returned from the Moon and ultimately splashed down in the Pacific. During his return from the Moon, Neil Armstrong spoke to the people of Earth, stating in part, "A hundred years ago, Jules Verne wrote a book about a voyage to the Moon. His spaceship, Columbia, took off from Florida and landed in the Pacific Ocean after completing a trip to the Moon. It seems appropriate to us to share with you some of the reflections of the crew as the modern-day Columbia completes its rendezvous with the planet Earth and the same Pacific Ocean tomorrow ..." Verne underscored his emphasis on science when he compared his work with that of H. G. Wells: "I do not see the possibility of comparison between his work and mine. We do not proceed in the same manner. It occurs to me that his stories do not repose on a very scientific basis. ... I make use of physics. He invents. I go to the moon in a cannon-ball, discharged from a cannon. Here there is no invention. He goes to Mars in an airship, which he constructs of a metal which does not obey the law of gravitation. Ça c'est très joli ... but show me this metal. Let him produce it." "I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne" (Arthur C. Clarke). "[Verne's] first books, the shortest, Around the World and From the Earth to the Moon, are still the best in my view. ... Over the last forty years, they have had an influence unequalled by any other books on the children of this and every country in Europe" (Leon Blum, 1905). A wonderful association item linking the giants of literary and real space travel.

        Crime and Punishment

The Walter Scott Publishing Company, Ltd. 1893 - First illustrated edition, uncertain issue and publication date. (Undated title page, which may not be an issue point. Turner's The Walter Scott Publishing Company apparently examined a single paperback copy with a title page dated 1911 and no illustrations, while referencing a 1893 ad for the book, which would make their publication date dubious for the first thus. Line Ettlinger and Gladstone reference an 1893 Walter Scott edition of which I can find little documentation. A bit of a bibliographical puzzle.) Original crimson cloth decorated in gilt, black endpapers. 456pp. Illustrated. Good+ with cloth worn and a bit chipped at head and tail, signatures a little strained and rear hinge split but internally clean. A rare early English-language edition of Dostoyevsky's masterpiece.

Fischer I, 173.         Les causes de l'effondrement économique, suivies du Prolétariat agricole et du Prolétariat ouvrier.

Paris, Georges Carré, 1893. - 8vo. (4), III, (1), 360, (2) pp. Contemporary green half cloth. First edition. - Nettlau has called the radical republican and Proudhonist Leverdays (1835-90) "the most powerful libertarian writer of his day, albeit no longer in touch with the movement as he had been with those of the 1860s and the Commune" (cf. Geschichte der Anarchie IV, p. 248). - Some browning; occasional pencil notes; corners bumped. Rare. Offsetting from tissue guard to title page, edges slightly toned. An excellent copy. Limited edition, number 96 of 200 copies printed on large paper. While often erratic and idiosyncratic, it helped establish the importance of Blake's esoteric verse" (ODNB). Ross p. 445; Wade 220. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Spirit Lamp. An Oxford Magazine without News. [Continued as: An Aesthetic Literary and Critical Magazine.]

Oxford: for the proprietors by James Thornton, May 1892 – June 1893 - 15 volumes, octavo. Original wrappers (vol. I, nos. 1–6 and vol. II, no. 1 beige wrappers printed in black; vol. II, nos. 2–4 and vol. III, nos. 1–3 white wrappers printed in blue with Magdalen tower illustration; vol. IV, nos. 1–2 blue wrappers printed in black). Vol. II, no. 1 in the first state with no "Second Edition" to front wrapper (no priority: "only one impression was actually printed" – Mason). Housed in a green morocco-backed bookform slipcase with the numbers held in two cloth chemises. A few of the early numbers with some early repair to wrappers, some with recent light repair; otherwise general chipping to the extremities of the brittle first few numbers, the white wrappered numbers in much better condition though with some staples rusted, and the blue wrappered volumes in near-fine condition but for some small chips to the wrapper edges. Nonetheless an extraordinary survival in very good condition overall, with some numbers uncut. First edition, all published, in original wrappers, an extremely rare complete set. The Spirit Lamp, the Oxford "aesthetic" literary magazine edited by Lord Alfred Douglas, became over four terms the crucible of a radical Uranian culture, and was decried as an "unholy, decadent academy" in rival Oxford magazine The Ephemeral. The Spirit Lamp printed unguardedly homosexual poems by Oscar Wilde, then Douglas's lover, as well as pieces by other such notable decadents as Lionel Johnson, John Addington Symonds, Robert Ross, Max Beerbohm, Pierre Louÿs, and many others. The first volume of the magazine was issued in six numbers during Trinity term 1892, under the editorship of Sandys Watson. It was set up as "An Oxford Magazine Without News", mischievous and facetious, with articles and satirical poems published anonymously or initialled. To give a flavour: in one early number a piece entitled "Pneumatolampadomastix" imagines a board of authorities condemning the magazine, followed by a Mr Oscar Wilde contributing: "The writers are quite unintelligible, and will consequently never be found out", and the scene closed by Mr George Meredith: "Foolish Young Fellows!" The second volume was published in four numbers during Michaelmas term 1892, now adopting illustrated wrappers and beginning to print the identities of its contributors. Lord Alfred Douglas's first contribution was printed in the third number, in an extraordinarily impertinent essay on the dullness of dons: "Dons occupy in the University the same position as moral laws occupy in the Universe; that is why they are so tedious. Perhaps, after all, the real reason why Dons are so uninteresting, is that they stand out against a background of such intense interest and beauty that they appear darker and duller than they really are. However that may be, they remain the one dull thing in Oxford, the one commonplace in the romance of an exquisite life, the one harsh discord in the harmony of a perfect music. Let us forgive them, but forget that they exist". Perhaps due to the popularity of the piece, or the fact that Douglas had some literary cachet for being then in the full swing of an affair with the famous Wilde (they had met in 1891, introduced by Lionel Johnson, and had summered together in 1892, during which Wilde was writing A Woman of No Importance), Watson surrendered the ownership and editorship of The Spirit Lamp to Douglas. Thus, from the following number (vol II, no. 4) right through its two subsequent volumes (vol. III, nos. 1–3: 3 February–10 March 1893, Hilary term; and vol. IV, nos. 1–2, May–June 1893, Trinity term), Douglas began to include radical new content. The first number under Douglas's editorship was introduced by "The New Remorse", a powerful poem of homosexual awakening by Wilde which he, besotted, had written out for Douglas shortly after they had met: "Who cometh in dyed garments from the South? / It is thy new-found Lord, and he shall kiss / The yet unravished roses of thy mouth, / And I shall weep, and worship, [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Pentamerone

London: Henry, 1893. First Edition. Cloth. fine. 2 vols. 1st edition of this translation. Original cloth, fine condition, fresher than an Italian bachelor. A book that is painfully common but not every set looks like this one, much in the same way that not every man with a mustache is a pedophile. This 1893 Burton edition is considerably more comprehensive than any earlier translation into English, but for all the praise heaped on Sir Richard, I think (where comparable) it's just a minor improvement over Taylor's translation, if it is any improvement at all.

Étude de Femme [Study of A Woman]

Paris: Édouard Kleinmann, 1893. First Edition. fine. Toulouse-Lautrec. 1st printing, 1st issue, Wittrock 11, the rare state A, of 3 (A, B, and C). This state A precedes the edition of 100 and is geometrically more limited. A fine lithograph on laid Japan paper, with full margins (9 5/8" X 15 1/2"). Signed by the artist with his monogram in black pencil, and it is anomalous to find his lithographs of this type signed by hand, as what is usually seen are his initials applied in the plate or with a stamp. The ownership chain tells a fully comforting tale. Ex-Roger Marx, his tiny indicator in the corner, and his pencil note, in French, along the bottom edge. Ex-The Museum of Modern Art, New York, from their own collection, and sold to subsidize their Acquisitions Fund, an impeccable provenance for the certainty of the lithograph, but even more importantly, for the certainty of the pencil signature. Framed. There is a painting, on cardboard, of the same young woman, in the same pose, at The Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, but it isn't a great painting, inasmuch as it has none of the background, and she isn't drawn as pretty. Toulouse-Lautrec was 4 feet 8 inches tall, with a normal size body on child size legs, but he was a superstar post-impressionist painter, the first artist to hang in the Louvre while he was alive, and he lived in the Montmartre, and chilled at Le Moulin Rouge (The Red Mill), where a table was always reserved for him, so he ate well, drank fine cognac, and got laid a lot, by dazzling babes, who really liked him.

19 JEWISH-RELATED BANK ACCOUNT DOCUMENTS FROM THE HIBERNIA SAVINGS AND LOAN SOCIETY

San Francisco([1893-1895]). 1st Edition. All Original Documents. 4to. 19 printed documents, dated 1893-1895, with names and other information in manuscript, plus 2 related manuscript notes ; 38 cm. These historic withdrawal notices and communications between the Hibernia Savings and Loan Society and several early Jewish Institutions of San Francisco provide a glimpse into the exchange between San Francisco's Irish and Jewish communities in the late 19th century. "With the Gold Rush, San Francisco's Irish population grew to 4, 200 in 1852; by 1880 this number had reached more than 30, 000, thirty-seven percent of San Francisco's population. They formed cultural organizations like the Hibernia Association (1852) , The Irish Festival (1863) , and The Knights of the Red Branch (in the Mission) . . . The Irish were . . . prominent in business. Samuel Brannan printed San Francisco's first newspaper in 1846. John Sullivan founded Hibernia Savings and Loan and the Hibernia Housing Society, which helped immigrants with loans to buy land and homes." (sfcityguides.org, 2016). Each document deals with the account of a 19th Century San Francisco Jewish institution, some of which include: Chebra B'Rith Shalom, Chebra Shaare Refooah Society, Congregation Ohabi Shalome, Congregation Tiferes Izrael, the California Lodge, and the Society Sons of Jacob. One document also deals with the Polish Ladies Society and Mutual Aid. Signatures included on these documents are those of: Theodor Blodes, Sigmund Fischer, Soloman Meyer, Leiser Zier, Samuel Cohn, David Block, Morris Whitehead, David Cohn, Julius Oraelsky, Adolf Morris, Charles Danziger, Magdalena Kropaniewicz, Paulina Fijalkowky, Isaac Silverman, George Rosenberg, Harris Rubin, Louis Friedlander, Abraham Colman, and many, many others. Some edgewear, and a few have small tears but overall the documents are in Good+ condition. (AMR-49-43)

        Memoirs of A Reformer (1832-1892)

Toronto: Hunter, Rose & Company, 1893. Hardcover. Very good. 271 p. 19 cm. Frontispiece portrait of the author, 2 b&w illustrations, and a facsimile letter. Grey cloth hardcover with gold print. Ink signature on front free endpaper of Dugald A. McKerrall of the hamlet of Eberts, near Dresden, Ontario. Alexander Milton Ross (1832 – 1897) was a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, known in that organization and among slaves as "The Birdman" for his preferred cover story as an ornithologist. A man of diverse interests and accomplishments, he was not only a bird expert but also a keen botanist and entomologist. An idealist, Ross manifested his beliefs in radical, anti-establishment activity and in polemical writing. As these Memoirs indicate, he was a committed and outspoken abolitionist but held a variety of other controversial views; he was a health fanatic, vegetarian, teetotaller, anti-vaccination and tobacco crusader, feminist, and eugenicist. The Appendix to this volume suggest he had an ego to match his accomplishments, for he includes praise by famous persons of his age (Gladstone, Garibaldi, Victor Hugo, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Horace Greeley, John Greenleaf Whittier) and rave reviews of his books.

        The Pentamerone

London: Henry, 1893. 2 vols. 1st edition of this translation. Original cloth, fine condition, fresher than an Italian bachelor. A book that is painfully common but not every set looks like this one, much in the same way that not every man with a mustache is a pedophile. This 1893 Burton edition is considerably more comprehensive than any earlier translation into English, but for all the praise heaped on Sir Richard, I think (where comparable) it's just a minor improvement over Taylor's translation, if it is any improvement at all. fine.
