Bad for Carreiro, Looks As If He is the Murderer, He Buys Shoes.

1893 - A Lesser-Known, But Equally Notorious, Axe-Murder in Fall River, Massachusetts [Broadside]. [Murder]. [Carreiro, Jose]. "Bad for Carreiro. Looks as If He is the Murderer. He Buys Shoes and Offers a Trade Dollar, And a Mutilated Half Dollar in Payment. Similar Coins Taken from Bertha's Room. Denies Any Such Transaction. Portuguese Answering His Description. Seen Running on Wilson Road on Morning of the Murder. Carrero Will be Charged with Murder in the District Court Tomorrow. Fine Piece of Police Work." Daily Evening News Bulletin! [Fall River, MA, June, 1893]. 17-1/4" x 10-3/4" broadside, four-column text below headline. Light browning, faint vertical and horizontal fold lines and creases, light rubbing and a few minor tears to edges. $650. * Carreiro, a Portuguese immigrant, entered the home of his former employer, Stephen Manchester, killed and dismembered his daughter, Bertha, with an axe and took money from her room. As the headline indicates, he was detected when he tried to use currency that had distinct marks that indicated Bertha's ownership. People immediately saw similarities between this case and the Lizzie Borden murders, which took place in Fall River the previous year. Along with the type of murder and mutilation, both acts occurred midday without a clear motive. Carreiro holds the dubious honor of Fall River's second most notorious axe murderer. This appears to be an unrecorded broadside. No copies listed on OCLC. Not in McDade, which has no accounts of this murder.

        The Poems

London: Lawrence & Bullen,, 1893. Octavo (181 x 120 mm). Modern black quarter calf, raised bands to spine, compartments ruled in gilt, orange and red morocco label, gilt rule to marbled sides, vellum tips, black endpapers, top edge gilt. Offsetting from tissue guard to title page, edges slightly toned. An excellent copy. Limited edition, number 96 of 200 copies printed on large paper. This scarce edition contains an introduction by Yeats which saw his "passionate defense" of Blake (Ross). Yeats "also marked down William Blake as a master early on, and with Edwin Ellis produced a large-scale commentary on Blake's prophetic writings in 1893. While often erratic and idiosyncratic, it helped establish the importance of Blake's esoteric verse" (ODNB).

1000,000 BANK NOTE and Other New Stories

New York Charles L. Webster 1893 - First Edition. With a frontispiece illustration by Dan Beard. 8vo, publisher’s original tan cloth pictorially decorated and lettered on the upper cover in gilt, black and brown, lettered on the spine in gilt. 260, 9 pages ads. A very fine copy, internally clean and fresh and near as mint, the hinges and joints all perfect, the binding clean and solid with sharp corners and edges, very minor mellowing to the spine panel and the gilt as is expected. FIRST EDITION, VERY SCARCE IN SUCH PLEASING CONDITION. First issue of this collection of short stories published in 1893, in a disastrous decade for the United States, a time marked by doubt and waning optimism, rapid immigration, labor problems, and the rise of political violence and social protest. It was also a difficult time for Twain personally, as he was devastated by the death of his daughter, Suzy. In spite of all this, the stories still brim with confidence and optimism, marking the moment of hope just before Twain turned to the more grim and sarcastic stories of his later years. £1,000,000 Bank-Note, the title story, charts the rags-to-riches ascent of a virtuous and resourceful clerk from San Francisco who arrives in London with a single dollar in his pocket, and proceeds to ultimate and splendid financial success and fame in London society. It is a paean to American ingenuity and a celebration of its cunning confidence-man narrator. The other pieces range from "Mental Telegraphy," a serious essay reflecting Twain's continuing interest in the occult, and the tongue-in-cheek "Petition to the Queen of England" for relief from taxes.         The Birth, Life, and Acts of King Arthur of His Noble Knights of the Round table Their Marvellous Enquests and Adventures the Achieving of the San Greal and in the End le Morte Darthur with the Dolourous Death and Departing Out of This World of Them All

London: J. M. Dent, 1893. First edition, limited to 1,500 copies. Volume One only (Includes Books 1-9), in extremely rare dust jacket. Published London: J. M. Dent, 1893. 4to., 8 1/2" x 10", lxiv + 455 pages, illustrated with full page plates, vignettes, borders, in-text decorations and cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley's first major commission and a landmark of great illustrated books. Beardsley juxtaposed various traditional and contemporary styles with his own, and laid them down, side-by-side throughout the book. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontpiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. Slight foxing to the cloth, endpapers toned along the perimeters, some wrinkling to the tissue guard at frontis, else very good, attractive; binding square and tight in rare, unrecorded dust jacket. We have been unable to locate any other example in a dust jacket. Jacket has rebacking and loss at the spine and rear panel. A highly desirable and collectible book. . 1st. Hard. Very Good/Good. Illus. by Beardsley, Aubrey. 4to. Limited Edition.

Signierte Prunkmappe für ein Eisen- oder Straßenbahnjubiläum.

Hamburg 1893 - (48 x 32 cm). The collaboration between the painter and the author was very close. "This book is the most marked trace of symbolism, the ratification by the Nabis of the principle of the book of dialogue" (Yves Peyré).This journey of the Nothing is an ironic odyssey, written "in reaction against the naturalist school" where some young people in search of "glorious destinies" embark for an allegorical journey that leads to the frozen deserts of barrenness.Very nice copy perfectly established by Gruel.Naville, Bibliography of the writings of André Gide, nº VI.- Chapon, The Painter and the book, 1870-1970, pp. 38-41.- Peyré, Painting and poetry, the dialogue by the book, 1874-2000, n ° 4 and pp. 105-106.- The Artist and the Book, 1860-1960, Boston, No. 76. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition completed print on May 25, 1893 on the presses of Paul Schmidt, typographer and Edw. Ancourt, lithograph and drawn to 300 numbered copies on laid cream plus some copies on China and Japan. Binding in full morocco brown, back with five nerves, date in tail, contreplats lined with red morocco with framing of a golden net, brown silk guards, double net on the cuts, golden wheels on the caps, covers and back preserved, all golden slices, case trimmed with brown morocco, binding signed Gruel. Some rare foxinges. Work designed and produced in collaboration with Maurice Denis who illustrated 31 original lithographs drawn in two tones, sometimes ocher background, sometimes pale green. The Nabi has managed to free himself from all descriptive servitude to better invest the text in creator. Precious autograph dedication signed by André Gide to Edouard Picard in ink on the fake title page. The Voyage d'Urien is one of the great books illustrated in the tradition of the painter's book inaugurated by Édouard Manet, Charles Cros and Stéphane Mallarmé in 1874-1875. The collaboration between the painter and the author was very close. "This book is the most marked trace of symbolism, the ratification by the Nabis of the principle of the book of dialogue" (Yves Peyré). This journey of the Nothing is an ironic odyssey, written "in reaction against the naturalist school" where some young people in search of "glorious destinies" embark for an allegorical journey that leads to the frozen deserts of barrenness. Very nice copy perfectly established by Gruel. Naville, Bibliography of the writings of André Gide, nº VI.- Chapon, The Painter and the book, 1870-1970, pp. 38-41.- Peyré, Painting and poetry, the dialogue by the book, 1874-2000, n ° 4 and pp. 105-106.- The Artist and the Book, 1860-1960, Boston, No. 76. Erstausg.

XXVI, 474 S., mit drei Textholzschnitten u. kl. astrolog. Fig., 8, Neuerer marmorierter Pappband mit goldgepr.

        Trip to the Moon

New York: F.M. Lupton, 1893 A Trip to the Moon signed by Neil Armstrong. 58 pp. Original wrappers. Several leaves stained, some wear. Printed on pulp paper. No. 36 of The Arm Chair Library, a ten cent weekly. Half morocco case. Signed by Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon. This classic of science fiction, turned into scientific fact by Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission, was first published as De la Terre à la Lune in 1865. Verne's reputation as the inventor of the science fiction novel rests primarily on From the Earth to the Moon. Verne's novel, set in post-Civil War America, presents the tale of the development and financing of a grand scheme to launch a manned vehicle to go to the Moon. The book was eerily accurate in its predictions concerning the feat. Verne described a three-man crew launched from Florida in a cylindro-conical vehicle called the Columbiad (Apollo 11's was the Columbia). Like Apollo 11, the vehicle used retrorockets, the men experienced weightlessness, and they returned from the Moon and ultimately splashed down in the Pacific. During his return from the Moon, Neil Armstrong spoke to the people of Earth, stating in part, "A hundred years ago, Jules Verne wrote a book about a voyage to the Moon. His spaceship, Columbia, took off from Florida and landed in the Pacific Ocean after completing a trip to the Moon. It seems appropriate to us to share with you some of the reflections of the crew as the modern-day Columbia completes its rendezvous with the planet Earth and the same Pacific Ocean tomorrow ..." Verne underscored his emphasis on science when he compared his work with that of H. G. Wells: "I do not see the possibility of comparison between his work and mine. We do not proceed in the same manner. It occurs to me that his stories do not repose on a very scientific basis. ... I make use of physics. He invents. I go to the moon in a cannon-ball, discharged from a cannon. Here there is no invention. He goes to Mars in an airship, which he constructs of a metal which does not obey the law of gravitation. Ça c'est très joli ... but show me this metal. Let him produce it." "I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne" (Arthur C. Clarke). "[Verne's] first books, the shortest, Around the World and From the Earth to the Moon, are still the best in my view. ... Over the last forty years, they have had an influence unequalled by any other books on the children of this and every country in Europe" (Leon Blum, 1905). A wonderful association item linking the giants of literary and real space travel.

        Crime and Punishment

The Walter Scott Publishing Company, Ltd. 1893 - First illustrated edition, uncertain issue and publication date. (Undated title page, which may not be an issue point. Turner's The Walter Scott Publishing Company apparently examined a single paperback copy with a title page dated 1911 and no illustrations, while referencing a 1893 ad for the book, which would make their publication date dubious for the first thus. Line Ettlinger and Gladstone reference an 1893 Walter Scott edition of which I can find little documentation. A bit of a bibliographical puzzle.) Original crimson cloth decorated in gilt, black endpapers. 456pp. Illustrated. Good+ with cloth worn and a bit chipped at head and tail, signatures a little strained and rear hinge split but internally clean. A rare early English-language edition of Dostoyevsky's masterpiece.

Fischer I, 173.

- 8vo. (4), III, (1), 360, (2) pp. Contemporary green half cloth. First edition. - Nettlau has called the radical republican and Proudhonist Leverdays (1835-90) "the most powerful libertarian writer of his day, albeit no longer in touch with the movement as he had been with those of the 1860s and the Commune" (cf. Geschichte der Anarchie IV, p. 248). - Some browning; occasional pencil notes; corners bumped. Rare.
