Ancourt, lithograph and drawn to 300 numbered copies on laid cream plus some copies on China and Japan.Binding in full morocco brown, back with five nerves, date in tail, contreplats lined with red morocco with framing of a golden net, brown silk guards, double net on the cuts, golden wheels on the caps, covers and back preserved, all golden slices, case trimmed with brown morocco, binding signed Gruel.Some rare foxinges.Work designed and produced in collaboration with Maurice Denis who illustrated 31 original lithographs drawn in two tones, sometimes ocher background, sometimes pale green. The Nabi has managed to free himself from all descriptive servitude to better invest the text in creator.Precious autograph dedication signed by André Gide to Edouard Picard in ink on the fake title page.The Voyage d'Urien is one of the great books illustrated in the tradition of the painter's book inaugurated by Édouard Manet, Charles Cros and Stéphane Mallarmé in 1874-1875.       XXVI, 474 S., mit drei Textholzschnitten u. kl. astrolog. Fig., 8, Neuerer marmorierter Pappband mit goldgepr. Rückenschild Kloss 3821 Wolfstieg 4864: "Selten. Üb. die alten Einweihungen. Bringt die M[au]r[er]ei in Z[u]s[ammen]hang mit der Offenbarung Johannis. Abati 4 (1893) S.133 erwähnt einen Nachdruck, der bei Mösle in Wien erschien" Ackermann V/345. - Wurde schon zur Zeit des Erscheinens Christian Ernst Wünsch zugeschrieben (so auch Holzmann/Bohatta: Deutsches Anoymen-Lexikon 1501-1850), was aber von dem Literaturhistoriker Flodoard von Biedermann (Euphorion XX, 1913, S. 406-409) widerlegt wurde. Eine zweite Aufl. erschien 1784. - Der Autor äussert sich sehr kritisch zur Bibel u. meint, "daß beynahe eben so viele durch die Bibel als durch unglückliche Liebe, ihren Verstand verlohren haben" (S.X). Auch versucht er, rationelle Erklärungen für einige der "Wahrsagermärchen" zu finden. (So beschreibt er die Evangelisten als Fanatiker u. Jesu Tod als Ohnmacht, der bald der wirkliche Tod durch Wundbrand folgte). Er "will deutlich zeigen, daß alle Volksreligionen im Grunde durchaus aus einer gemeinsamen Quelle, aus den alten Beobachtungen der Himmels- und Naturbegebenheiten herfließen" (S.XII). Ausserdem wendet sich der Autor gegen die "Goldmacherei", der zu seiner Zeit zahlreiche Freimaurer anhingen, u. von denen viele ihre "Wahrheit" aus der Bibel beweisen wollen. Im Gegensatz dazu soll sein Werk zur "ihrer bessern Belehrung dienen". Er selbst beschreibt sein Buch in gewisser Weise als "einen Beytrag zur Geschichte der Sternkunde" (S.XXVI). - Kanten berieben Vorsatz mit Signatur seltene kl. Anstreichungen durchgehend etwas fleckig u. gebräunt, sonst ein gutes Expl.

No. 36 of The Arm Chair Library, a ten cent weekly. Half morocco case. Signed by Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon. This classic of science fiction, turned into scientific fact by Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission, was first published as De la Terre à la Lune in 1865. Verne's reputation as the inventor of the science fiction novel rests primarily on From the Earth to the Moon. Verne's novel, set in post-Civil War America, presents the tale of the development and financing of a grand scheme to launch a manned vehicle to go to the Moon. The book was eerily accurate in its predictions concerning the feat. Verne described a three-man crew launched from Florida in a cylindro-conical vehicle called the Columbiad (Apollo 11's was the Columbia). Like Apollo 11, the vehicle used retrorockets, the men experienced weightlessness, and they returned from the Moon and ultimately splashed down in the Pacific. During his return from the Moon, Neil Armstrong spoke to the people of Earth, stating in part, "A hundred years ago, Jules Verne wrote a book about a voyage to the Moon. His spaceship, Columbia, took off from Florida and landed in the Pacific Ocean after completing a trip to the Moon. It seems appropriate to us to share with you some of the reflections of the crew as the modern-day Columbia completes its rendezvous with the planet Earth and the same Pacific Ocean tomorrow ..." Verne underscored his emphasis on science when he compared his work with that of H. G. Wells: "I do not see the possibility of comparison between his work and mine. We do not proceed in the same manner. It occurs to me that his stories do not repose on a very scientific basis. ... I make use of physics. He invents. I go to the moon in a cannon-ball, discharged from a cannon. Here there is no invention. He goes to Mars in an airship, which he constructs of a metal which does not obey the law of gravitation.       Oxford: for the proprietors by James Thornton, May 1892 – June 1893 - 15 volumes, octavo. Original wrappers (vol. I, nos. 1–6 and vol. II, no. 1 beige wrappers printed in black; vol. II, nos. 2–4 and vol. III, nos. 1–3 white wrappers printed in blue with Magdalen tower illustration; vol. IV, nos. 1–2 blue wrappers printed in black). Vol. II, no. 1 in the first state with no "Second Edition" to front wrapper (no priority: "only one impression was actually printed" – Mason). Housed in a green morocco-backed bookform slipcase with the numbers held in two cloth chemises. A few of the early numbers with some early repair to wrappers, some with recent light repair; otherwise general chipping to the extremities of the brittle first few numbers, the white wrappered numbers in much better condition though with some staples rusted, and the blue wrappered volumes in near-fine condition but for some small chips to the wrapper edges. Nonetheless an extraordinary survival in very good condition overall, with some numbers uncut. First edition, all published, in original wrappers, an extremely rare complete set. The Spirit Lamp, the Oxford "aesthetic" literary magazine edited by Lord Alfred Douglas, became over four terms the crucible of a radical Uranian culture, and was decried as an "unholy, decadent academy" in rival Oxford magazine The Ephemeral. The Spirit Lamp printed unguardedly homosexual poems by Oscar Wilde, then Douglas's lover, as well as pieces by other such notable decadents as Lionel Johnson, John Addington Symonds, Robert Ross, Max Beerbohm, Pierre Louÿs, and many others. The first volume of the magazine was issued in six numbers during Trinity term 1892, under the editorship of Sandys Watson. It was set up as "An Oxford Magazine Without News", mischievous and facetious, with articles and satirical poems published anonymously or initialled. To give a flavour: in one early number a piece entitled "Pneumatolampadomastix" imagines a board of authorities condemning the magazine, followed by a Mr Oscar Wilde contributing: "The writers are quite unintelligible, and will consequently never be found out", and the scene closed by Mr George Meredith: "Foolish Young Fellows!" The second volume was published in four numbers during Michaelmas term 1892, now adopting illustrated wrappers and beginning to print the identities of its contributors. Lord Alfred Douglas's first contribution was printed in the third number, in an extraordinarily impertinent essay on the dullness of dons: "Dons occupy in the University the same position as moral laws occupy in the Universe; that is why they are so tedious. Perhaps, after all, the real reason why Dons are so uninteresting, is that they stand out against a background of such intense interest and beauty that they appear darker and duller than they really are. However that may be, they remain the one dull thing in Oxford, the one commonplace in the romance of an exquisite life, the one harsh discord in the harmony of a perfect music. Let us forgive them, but forget that they exist". Perhaps due to the popularity of the piece, or the fact that Douglas had some literary cachet for being then in the full swing of an affair with the famous Wilde (they had met in 1891, introduced by Lionel Johnson, and had summered together in 1892, during which Wilde was writing A Woman of No Importance), Watson surrendered the ownership and editorship of The Spirit Lamp to Douglas. Thus, from the following number (vol II, no. 4) right through its two subsequent volumes (vol. III, nos. 1–3: 3 February–10 March 1893, Hilary term; and vol. IV, nos. 1–2, May–June 1893, Trinity term), Douglas began to include radical new content. The first number under Douglas's editorship was introduced by "The New Remorse", a powerful poem of homosexual awakening by Wilde which he, besotted, had written out for Douglas shortly after they had met: "Who cometh in dyed garments from the South? / It is thy new-found Lord, and he shall kiss / The yet unravished roses of thy mouth, / And I shall weep, and worship, [Attributes: First Edition]

      Raisa was a Polish-born American soprano (1893-1963), the choice to sing the title role of Turandot in the world premiere of the opera in 1926. The role of Calaf in the world premiere at La Scala was sung by Spanish tenor Miguel Fleta (1897-1938).  Duo of signed photo postcards with Raisa as Turandot and Fleta as Calaf in the world premiere production, sizes are 3.5 x 5.5 inches each, the Fleta autograph has a repaired crack over the left, not affecting his handwritting. Excellent, only sold as a pair and not separate.

Becoming First Lady at age 21, she remains the youngest wife of a sitting president. Their's was the only marraige by a sitting president in the White House. She was put a charming and graceful face on the administration. Frances supported projects in Washington, including the Women's Christian Temperance Movement's "Hope and Help Project," and helped establish the Washington Home for Friendless Colored Girls. Frances gave birth to a daughter, Ruth (1891, of "Baby Ruth" candy bar fame). She was pregnant again by the time her husband started his second term and gave birth to another daughter, Ester, in September 1893. During Cleveland's second term, the family welcomed a third daughter, Marion (1895), to the world. Es zeigt im Vordergrund die Tänzerin Jane Avril und den Schriftsteller und Musikkritiker Edouard Dujardin bei einem Auftritt der Sängerin Yvette Guilbert. - Das Werbeplakat für das Pariser Cafe ist eine der berühmtesten Lithographien Toulouse-Lautrecs es gilt als eine Ikone der Plakatkunst des Jugendstils. - Lautrecs Komposition inspiriert von japanischen Farbholzschnitten, passend zur fernöstlich inspirierten Ausstattung des Cafes Divan Japonais, rückt das Publikum in den Vordergrund. Die Sängerin Yvette Guilbert ist im Hintergrund dargestellt; mit den typischen langen schwarzen Handschuhen erscheint sie jenseits des Orchestergrabens. Im Publikum dominieren die beiden Größen des Pariser Nachtlebens: die berühmte Tänzerin aus dem Moulin Rouge Jane Avril (1848-1943) und der dandyhafte Edouard Dujardin (1861-1949). - Unterer Rand mit geringen Knick- und Kratzspuren, papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, sonst sehr gut erhalten.       G. P. Putnam's Sons (1893), New York & London - Small quarto (6" x 9-1/4") in the original gilt-decorated cream cloth with brown lettering on the front cover; xvi, 472 pages. Illustrated with a frontispiece plate, drawings at the chapter heads and tails, and 23 full-page plates by A. B. Frost, Henry Sandham, J. Carter Beard, Frederick Remington, and Harry Eaton. This trade edition preceded the limited edition of 200 copies, per a "Notice" that is tipped in before the frontispiece announcing that the limited edition is in preparation. A monumental Association Copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To my beloved friend,/Jacob A. Riis;/may you enjoy the/northwoods as much as I/enjoyed the great plains/& the Rockies!/Theodore Roosevelt/July 1901." The number "14" has been inserted after the word "July," possibly by Roosevelt. Laid in is a pass made out to Riis for a Roosevelt Reception aboard the U.S. Revenue Steamer Androscoggin on 18 June 1910. Of Jacob Riis, his lifelong friend, Roosevelt remarked in his AUTOBIOGRAPHY: "I am tempted to call [him] the best American I ever knew." In 1904 Riis published a biography of his good friend titled THEODORE ROOSEVELT: THE CITIZEN. Jacob Riis, among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden, arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism, Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN, Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looking for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help'. That was all, and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years, we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt, in turn, wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once, in speaking of me, he said, 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure, but I have loved him dearly . and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." Covers soiled and marked, tight.
