A nineteenth century Louis Vuitton trade card

[Circa 1893]. Thin card, 83 x 121 mm, lithograph printed recto only in black on pale aqua; a very light stain at left hand edge, otherwise in fine condition. A rare early example of the trade card of the firm of Louis Vuitton, one of the most famous brands in history. The card gives the addresses of Louis Vuitton's iconic Paris store at 1, rue Scribe, in the highly fashionable district in the vicinity of the Place de l'Opéra, which had opened in 1871; and also of the London store at 454, Strand, which opened in 1885. Although the card was printed in Paris, it is in English (it advertises "Trunks and Bags") and has an extremely early London telephone number (simply Charing +). It is therefore likely that it was produced exclusively for the London store. The emblem at the centre shows the French flag, the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes. This helps to date the card to around 1893, the year that George Vuitton visited the United States for the first time and Vuitton luggage was displayed at the World's Fair in Chicago. The address of the Vuitton workshops inAsnières-sur-Seine, now the home of the Louis Vuitton private museum, is printed across the bottom of the card.

THE ANGEL OF THE REVOLUTION: A TALE OF THE COMING TERROR

London: Tower Publishing Company Limited, 1893. First edition. Small booksellers ticket affixed to upper front paste-down, presentation gift label affixed to front paste-down, some foxing to several of the first and last leaves. Cloth rubbed at edges, a solid, clean, nearly fine copy. The first edition is very uncommon. (19976). Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-viii [1] 2-393 [394: ad], inserted frontispiece with illustration by E. S. Hope and sixteen inserted plates with illustrations by Fred T. Jane, original pictorial bevel-edged blue cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, slate coated endpapers. The author's first novel, preceded by two poetry books published pseudonymously as "Lara." From the period of 1870 up to 1914, the start of WW I, future war fiction was at it's height of popularity. Griffith was one of the writers who realized the destructive power that aerial warfare would bring to future conflict, as well as the overall impact of new technology on armed conflict. In Griffith's hugely popular and very influential novel the inventor of a new flying ship joins the Brotherhood of Freedom, an organization that controls the work of Nihilists, Anarchists, and Socialists throughout the world and is popularly known as the Terror. When war starts in Europe the daughter of the mysterious Master of the Terrorists, Natas (Satan backwards), plans to let the European powers destroy each other and then the Brotherhood will step in and take over Europe which will then be united (under Anglo-Saxon rule) into a single force to meet the "impending flood of yellow barbarians" assumed to be forming in the East. As the war progresses the Russians overrun all of Europe and invade England. After England's king (Edward VII) surrenders to the Brotherhood, the Russian attackers in England are slaughtered and the Brotherhood's air force quickly conquers the Russian homeland. There is no invasion from Asia and the West is at peace under socialist rule. "THE ANGEL OF THE REVOLUTION is remarkable not only for its extravagant visions of aerial bombing and mass destruction but also for its bastardized political ideology, which is a curious mixture of radical opinions ... Along with M. P. Shiel and H. G. Wells, he anticipated that the next war might be 'the most frightful carnival of destruction the world has ever seen,' involving the slaughter of millions of people, mostly noncombatants. This did not, however, deter him from looking forward to that conflict hopefully and enthusiastically. Like Shiel, he was an Anglo-Saxon chauvinist; like Wells a socialist; and he was hopeful that the apocalyptic clash of forces might result in the end of tyranny in Europe and the permanent victory of Christendom over the religious empires of the East. The attainment of such an end, in his view, would easily justify the death of millions ... By the time Griffith wrote his last novel, THE LORD OF LABOUR (published posthumously in 1911), his war of the imminent future was being fought with atomic missiles and disintegrator rays. He was still looking forward eagerly to the conflict. What effect the spectacle of the actual Great War might have had on his imaginative enthusiasm we can only guess." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 67-71. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-84; (1981) 1-83; (1987) 1-41; (1995) 1-41; and (2004) II-465. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 929. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 365.         LONE STAR HARRY. AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVE SCOUT.

New York: Dick's Publishing House, n. d. (ca 1893)., 1893. First edition. First edition. 12mo. Original pictorial pink wrappers, 16 pp. Born in 1855, in what is now the town of Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas, Lone Star Harry, at the age of fourteen, "was broke in as a cowboy" and worked for the C.C., 63, and other ranges. He worked as a scout for General Crook and various Wild West shows. One of the most important features of this pamphlet is the section entitled: "My Experience on the Texas Cattle Trail, A Picturesque Business Killed by Steam and Iron, Experiences during a Cattle Drive of 3,500 cattle from Texas up to Nebraska." This drive took place in 1882, with Captain Charles King, bound for Ogallala. Includes information on handling cowponies, and tips on how to quiet cattle after a stampede. The section on gun handling advises people to stand with their left side facing a gunman, who will then be unable to hit your heart. In 1890, Lone Star traveled to the East, and began his career as a trick pistol shot for Dr. Solomon's Wild West Show until 1893. Not in Adams Herd or National Union Catalogue. A very scarce and unrecorded cattle narrative and probably for Wild West Show distribution. Very fine copy.

Vikram and the Vampire or Tales of Hindu Devilry

London:: Tylston and Edwards, 1893.. Tall 8vo. xxi, [3], 243, [5] pp. Photogravure frontispiece by Albert Letchford (1866-1905), 33 illus. by Ernest Griset of which 16 are full-page plates printed on special china paper and mounted on fine card stock; occasional foxing. Original elaborate gilt-stamped pictorial black cloth, t.e.g.; front joint laid down, head and tail mended, endpapers stained. PUBLISHER'S DEDICATION TO WALTER BOUTALL dated 1893 in ink, “… from Tylston & Edwards, in grateful recognition of the services rendered by his firm to theirs in proofing this edition.” Very good. LIMITED EDITION of 200 copies. From the preface: The Baital-Pachisi, or Twenty-five Tales of a Baital is the history of a huge Bat, Vampire, or Evil Spirit which inhabited and animated dead bodies. It is an old, and thoroughly Hindu, Legend composed in Sanskrit, and is the germ which culminated in the Arabian Nights, and which inspired the “Golden Ass” of Apuleius, Boccacio's “Decameron,” the “Pentamerone,” and all that class of facetious fictitious literature. The translation is rendered peculiarly and made valuable Burton's intimate knowledge of language. To all who understand the ways of the East, it is as witty, and as full of what is popularly called ‘chaff' as it is possible to be. There is not a dull page in it, and it will especially please those who delight in the weird and supernatural, the grotesque, and the ‘wild life'.

[The Dramatic Works of Oscar Wilde]. The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. His notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work. After the success of Wilde's plays Lady Windermere's Fan and A Woman of No Importance, Wilde's producers urged him to write further plays. In July 1894 he mooted his idea for The Importance of Being Earnest to George Alexander, the actor-manager of the St James's Theatre. Wilde summered with his family at Worthing, where he wrote the play quickly in August. His fame now at its peak, he used the working title Lady Lancing to avoid pre-emptive speculation of its content. Many names and ideas in the play were borrowed from people or places the author had known; Lady Queensberry, Lord Alfred Douglas's mother, for example, lived at Bracknell. There is widespread agreement among Wilde scholars that the most important influence on the play was W. S. Gilbert's 1877 farce Engaged; Wilde borrowed from Gilbert not only several incidents but, in Russell Jackson's phrase "the gravity of tone demanded by Gilbert of his actors". Wilde continually revised the text over the next months: no line was left untouched, and "in a play so economical with its language and effects, [the revisions] had serious consequences". Sos Eltis describes Wilde's revisions as a refined art at work: the earliest, longest handwritten drafts of the play labour over farcical incidents, broad puns, nonsense dialogue and conventional comic turns. In revising as he did, "Wilde transformed standard nonsense into the more systemic and disconcerting illogicality which characterises Earnest's dialogue". Richard Ellmann argues that Wilde had reached his artistic maturity and wrote this work more surely and rapidly than before. Wilde hesitated about submitting the script to Alexander, worrying that it might be unsuitable for the St James's Theatre, whose typical repertoire was relatively serious, and explaining that it had been written in response to a request for a play "with no real serious interest". When Henry James's Guy Domville failed, Alexander turned to Wilde and agreed to put on his play. Alexander began his usual meticulous preparations, interrogating the author on each line and planning stage movements with a toy theatre. In the course of these rehearsals Alexander asked Wilde to shorten the play from four acts to three. Wilde agreed and combined elements of the second and third acts. The largest cut was the removal of the character of Mr. Gribsby, a solicitor who comes from London to arrest the profligate "Ernest" (i.e., Jack) for his unpaid dining bills. Algernon, who is posing as "Ernest", will be led away to Holloway Jail unless he settles his accounts immediately. Jack finally agrees to pay for Ernest, everyone thinking that it is Algernon's bill when in fact it is his own. The four-act version was first played on the radio in a BBC production and is still sometimes performed. Peter Raby argues that the three-act structure is more effective, and that the shorter original text is more theatrically resonant than the expanded published edition. The play was first produced at the St James's Theatre on Valentine's Day 1895. It was freezing cold but Wilde arrived dressed in "florid sobriety", wearing a green carnation. The audience, according to one report, "included many members of the great and good, former cabinet ministers and privy councillors, as well as actors, writers, academics, and enthusiasts". Allan Aynesworth, who played Algernon Moncrieff, recalled to Hesketh Pearson that "In my fifty-three years of acting, I never remember a greater triumph than [that] first night". Aynesworth was himself "debonair and stylish", and Alexander, who played Jack Worthing, "demure". The Marquess of Queensberry, the father of Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas (who was on holiday in Algiers at the time), had planned to disrupt the play by throwing a bouquet of rotten vegetables at the playwright when he took his bow at the end of the show. Wilde and Alexander learned of the plan, and the latter cancelled Queensberry's ticket and arranged for policemen to bar his entrance. Nevertheless, he continued harassing Wilde, who eventually launched a private prosecution against the peer for criminal libel, triggering a series of trials ending in Wilde's imprisonment for gross indecency. Alexander tried, unsuccessfully, to save the production by removing Wilde's name from the billing, but the play had to close after only 86 performances. The play's original Broadway production opened at the Empire Theatre on 22 April 1895, but closed after sixteen performances. Its cast included William Faversham as Algy, Henry Miller as Jack, Viola Allen as Gwendolen, and Ida Vernon as Lady Bracknell. The Australian premiere was in Melbourne on 10 August 1895, presented by Dion Boucicault, Jr. and Robert Brough, and the play was an immediate success. Wilde's downfall in England did not affect the popularity of his plays in Australia. Wilde's two final comedies, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, were still on stage in London at the time of his prosecution, and they were soon closed as the details of his case became public. After two years in prison with hard labour, Wilde went into exile in Paris, sick and depressed, his reputation destroyed in England. In 1898, when no-one else would, Leonard Smithers agreed with Wilde to publish the two final plays. Wilde proved to be a diligent reviser, sending detailed instructions on stage directions, character listings and the presentation of the book, and insisting that a playbill from the first performance be reproduced inside. Ellmann argues that the proofs show a man "very much in command of himself and of the play". Wilde's name did not appear on the cover, it was "By the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan". His return to work was brief though, as he refused to write anything else, "I can write, but have lost the joy of writing". (Wikipedia)
