Columbus; Carl Maria Seyppel
Frz. Rangette & Sons, Dusseldorf, Germany. Very unique edition, unpaginated (47 p.) with no publication date (c. 1892). Authored by Carl Maria Seyppel (1847-1913) according to the World Catalogue 9OCLC: 14024197 - "A spurious work purporting to be the log book of Christopher Columbus, which, according to legend, he threw into the sea during a storm, and which was found on the coast of Pembrokeshire 400 years later. Written in antiquated English, with paper and binding made to imitate in colour and appearance a volume damaged by exposure to seawater. " Printed by lithographic process on imitation parchment paper. Text and illustrations printed to appear hand written, with many decorated initials. Pages and cover are brittle because of the parchment paper imitation. Original cover had shells ,barnacles and leaves attached by the publisher to make it appear it was sitting on the bottom of the sea floor before washing up on shore. All of these attachments are gone except for a single red ball. Title page is actually the front pastedown with five clean end pages in rear. Some handwriting is present: initials on front cover and notations on title page, which are all done in pencil. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dimsdale, Thomas J.
Virginia City, M.T.: D.W. Tilton, 1892. 241, [1 blank] pp. A clean text. Original printed front wrapper [some spotting] laid down, modern plain wrappers, Very Good. Bound in a slipcase, with printed spine title. The scarce second edition of the first and "textually the most important book ever printed in Montana" [Howes]. The first edition is rarely seen today. "Perhaps no book excels Dimsdale's in presenting the picture of the lawless conditions that characterized the mining camps of the Rocky Mountain country. The author was editor of the Virginia City Montana Post and a participant in the extraordinary campaign against lawlessness. The book ran serially in the Post before being published in book form" [Adams]. It is "one of the most celebrated and important works dealing with the early occupation, upbuilding and civilization of the West...His is the first complete account of the group of desperadoes known in the '60's as 'Henry Plummer's Road Agent Band.' It tells of the reign of terror; recites the series of murders, stage coach and highway robberies, the organization of the miners into a committee of Vigilance" [Eberstadt]. Howes D345. Graff 1088. OUDEMANS, A.C.
1892 F First Edition E.J.Brill / Luzac Leiden / London. A very good copy indeed in the original dark red cloth, spine faded, light damp scarring to lower margins of the boards, text clean and tight. J. L. B. Smith's copy, with his ownership signature on the fep. An important association copy, linking a supposed long extinct species to the possibility that earlier sightings of this prehistoric fish had been reported as being "sea-serpents": In "Old Fourlegs: The Story of the Coelacanth", Smith states " "One of my most constant and peculiar obsessions had always been a conviction that I was destined to discover some quite outrageous creature, I had no idea what, but had come to suspect that it might be a true sea-serpent or something like that" (p.29). Smith correctly identified the Coelacanth in 1938. The book is a cornerstone of cryptozoology

Henri PENE DU BOIS. Octave Uzanne.
"The author discusses the art of forming a library and pleads for perfection of the smallest details of collecting regardless of the subject, period or author concerned. Du Bois writes interestingly of the early bookmen, Caneveri, Masioli, Grolier, Spencer, Didot, and Brinley, to name a few.the text of this book-and one needs a reading knowledge of French to appreciate its fullness - offers more thought-provoking material to the bibliophile than any half dozen other titles in the field." John Wisden
1892. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. The books all tend to have worn bindings (some green some blue) but lovely inside. In detail, in this lot we have 1892 to 1899 Original Wisden Rebinds, all eight books with covers and photoplates within, apart from the 1896 in worn blue boards, 1896 in nicer blue boards, the ones in worn blue boards have some marks and some wear but the internal covers are in good order and contents very respectable. The 1893 and 1896 have loose photoplate and page xxxvi has 2/3rd of it missing in the 1893. A nice cheap set. Strategy 1. Would split. More information and pictures available on request and happy to offer some discount if purchased with other Havers Wisdens that I am listing today.

(JOYCE, JAMES). FEILBOGEN, SIEGMUND
Vienna, Alfred Holder, 1892. Rebound in plain cloth-backed boards. X, 170 p. 1st edition. Binding a bit worn. Important work of the Austrian economist (1858-1928), who lost his career after a terrible antisemitic row involving his sister in law. Feilbogen was at the cradle of the reception of James Joyce in the German language and himself had contact with Joyce in the last decade of his life. A funny passage in Joyce's letters must be mentioned, where someone mistakes Feilbogen's ear trumpet for a telescope. With a handwritten dedication by the author on the title page, dated 'Wien, 15. Aug. 95.'.
