St. Petersburg: Typ. of E. Yevdokimov, 1892. xvi, 391 pp. Octavo. With a folding lithographed map at rear. Contemporary brown quarter leather with cloth boards and gilt lettered title on the spine. Previous owners' inscriptions on the title page and front free endpaper, library stamps on the front free endpaper and verso of the title page, binding rubbed on extremities, overall a very good copy. The book is based on Podzhio's diaries and private notes, original Chinese and Japanese sources studied during his service in the Far East, and ''all available books, articles and correspondences, which appeared in print in the last thirty years, mostly in foreign languages'' (Preface). the Portraits at Claydon House
London - Longman, Green, and Co, 1892. A very handsome history of the Verney family, during the seventeenth century. Illustrated throughout with twenty-six plates, two of which are folding. Bound by Bayntun-Riviere. Verney is the name of an English family that traces back around eight centuries. It first settled at Fleetmarston in Buckinghamshire, then at Pendley in Hertfordshire, and finally at Middle Claydon which the family purchased in the 1460s in Buckinghamshire and where descendants still live in Claydon House. Complete in two volumes, though seen without the continuation of the family history through the Commonwealth that is often seen with this set. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally, smart. Internally, firmly bound. Paper repairs to the folding plan in the first volume. Pages are bright, with just some occasional spotting. Overall: NEARFINE. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Japanese Gardens) PIGGOTT, F.T.
London: George Allen 1892. First edition. Piggott's personal floral diary of Japan describes not only the seasonal progression of flowers in his own garden there, but also native flowers, trees and plants as they appear in the country's landscape and as they appear as decorations or symbols in Japanese ceremonial and everyday life. In addition to describing his own garden, he takes the reader on a tour of Count Okuma's garden at Waseda near Tokyo and on a June walk in the mountains around Miiyanoshta. Illustrated with reproductions of drawings by Alfred East and sketches by the author, including two full page color reproductions from his sketchbook. The entire design of the book is also a lovely example of Japonisme with color decorative designs adapted from Japanese lacquer boxes, flower-types cast from Japanese models by Messrs. Clowes, etc. 4to (27.5 x 21.5 cm); (viii) + 60 + (11) pp. with colored designs on half title, title page and dedication page, numerous text decorations including reproductions of photos and sketches, 4 black and white full page reproductions from paintings and 2 full page color lithographed plates from sketches. Original paper covered boards, gilt titling and printed decoration along upper edges, heavily soiled, including some ink staining and scuffing; original decorative endpapers, internally very good. .

George Didsbury. Wellington, New Zealand. 1892 1st edition. 8vo (137 x 210mm). Ppii,99. Two b/w plates of trout, folding plate, LACKING large folding map at rear. Blue cloth-covered boards, titled in gilt on upper board. Quite used copy, slightly frayed, lacking the folding map. Ownership signature of Arthur W. Parrott, plus name stamps of R.C. Bishop. Adhesive sticker on upper board. Good. The first New Zealand book on trout fishing to be published in that country. Discusses the introduction and acclimatisation of trout in New Zealand as well as angling methods and locations. "The book devotes only 9 pages to the North Island and some 50 pages to the South. The book is short on illustration: a single folded plan of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's ponds at Masterton and a couple of plates of sketches of Otago trout are the only support for the large folding map 'shewing' the trout streams of North and Middle (South) Islands."
