HARTWIG, Dr G.
Longmans, 1892. New edition. 8vo. Original green cloth, with blind stamped decoration to the upper panel and gilt titling to the spine. A very good copy indeed, with a little wear to the base of the rear joint and some light foxing internally. Eight chromolithograph plates and copious wood engraving in the text of polar natural history. Two folding colour maps each of the North and South polar regions. 'The Polar World' was a popular natural history of the Polar regions and its explorers, its object "to describe the Polar World in its principle natural features, to point out the influence of its long winter-night and fleeting summer on the development of vegetable and animal existence, and finally to picture man waging the battle of life against the dreadful climate of the high latitudes of our globe either as the inhabitant of their gloomy solitudes, or as the bold investigator of their mysteries." MEW, James and John ASHTON
London: Leadenhall Press, 1892. First Edition. Large octavo, original blue cloth, 362 pages. Uncommon history of all things beverage, including chapters on liquor, beer, tea, etc. Includes a chapter titled: American Drinks, with three pages of recipes including Sleeper, Bishop, Locomotive, Pousse l'Amour, Blue Blazer, Black Stripe, etc. From the text: "The great authority, probably the greatest authority, on this interesting subject is a gentleman who, with the true modesty of genius, allows himself to be known only by the pseudonym of Jerry Thomas. Formerly a bar-tender at the Metropolitan Hotel, New York, and the Planter's House, St. Louis, he is said to have traveled over Europe and America in search of all that is recondite in this branch of the spirit art. His very name, says one of his admirers, is synonymous in the lexicon of mixed drinks with all that is rare and original. Among, the chief American drinks are, being alphabetically arranged, cobblers, cocktails, cups, flips, juleps, mulls, nectars, neguses, noggs, punches, of which there are at least three score, sangarees, shrubs, slings, smashes, and toddies". Found in the following references: Straight Up Or On the Rocks, The Story of the American Cocktail by William Grimes; The School of Sophisticated Drinking: An Intoxicating History of Seven Spirits By Kerstin Ehmer, Beate Hindermann; Absinthe The Cocaine of the Nineteenth Century By Doris Lanier; A Bibliography on Grapes, Wines, Other Alcoholic Beverages, and Temperance By Maynard Andrew Amerine, Axel E. Lee, Vernon [Violet Paget]
London William Heinemann 1892 - 8vo. 276pp. + 14pp. ads. Publisher's grey cloth boards titled and decorated in dark green to spine and boards with a distictly pre-raphaelite flavour reminiscent of Rossetti's book productions. Minor rubbing and edgewear and a little bumping to extremities but a handsome, sharp copy. Very good indeed, edges untrimmed. Plain endpapers, internally clean. A collection of three stories, not outwardly related to Vernon's Lee's more supernatural output but instead dealing with the more terrestrial worries of loss, wastefulness and paranoia, expertly observed and sharply deserving of a fresh viewing. "Lee's stories are really in a category by themselves. Intelligent, amusingly ironic, imaginative, original, they deserve more than the passing attention that they have attracted." junecat [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

John Wisden
1892. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. The books all tend to have worn bindings (some green some blue) but lovely inside. In detail, in this lot we have 1892 to 1899 Original Wisden Rebinds, all eight books with covers and photoplates within, apart from the 1896 in worn blue boards, 1896 in nicer blue boards, the ones in worn blue boards have some marks and some wear but the internal covers are in good order and contents very respectable. The 1893 and 1896 have loose photoplate and page xxxvi has 2/3rd of it missing in the 1893. A nice cheap set. Strategy 1. Would split. More information and pictures available on request and happy to offer some discount if purchased with other Havers Wisdens that I am listing today. P and P Free to the UK, ask if abroad.

FENNELL, C A M
Cambridge: University Press, 1892. First edition, 4to, pp. xv, [1], 826; original maroon muslin-backed boards, gilt lettering direct on spine; front hinge and joint cracked, spine faded and spine ends chipped; small university library rubberstamp on title page; externally a fair to good copy; interior fine. A scarce book. "The main objects of this work are first, to enable the English reader to find out the meaning and history of foreign words and phrases which occur so frequently in English literature; secondly, to register the increase in vocabulary directly due to the adoption and naturalization of foreign words since the introduction of printing; and thirdly, to record all English words of foreign origin which have retained or have reverted to their native form. The smallness of the staff and the small number of contributors have made it inevitable that these objects should not be fully attained and that the work should be uneven É When the University of Cambridge, in 1882, accepted the bequest of 5000 pounds left by the late Mr. J.F. Stanford to be employed in the production of a dictionary of "Anglicized Words and Phrases," with the notes and collections made by Mr. Stanford himself with a view to such a work were carefully examined" (Introduction). The summits of Chimborazo (20,948 feet) and six other mountains between 15,000 and 20,000 feet were reached for the first time. A night was spent on the top of Cotopaxi (19,613 feet), and the features of that great volcano were thoroughly studied?.

[WARDE, FREDERICK]
Cleveland: W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith., 1892. First edition. A very good copy, restored at the edges, some uneven toning (Condition B+).. 28 x 42 1/2 inches (71 x 108 cm). Large, three panel poster, with the central image showing the great Forum scene, in which Virginius stabs his daughter in order to save her from being given as a slave to Appius Claudius, flanked by smaller panels of Virginius alone with his daughter. Frederick Barkham Warde (1851-1935), an English born American actor, came to America in 1874, joined Edwin Booth's company, and In 1881 formed a touring company of his own. "Warde represented a specific type of touring actor popular at the end of the nineteenth century. Purveyors of an old-fashioned tradition of acting and a well-worn repertory, these traveling tragedians carried familiar material far and wide into the American provinces... His classical productions were particularly admired by provincial reviewers. Indeed, it was Warde's scholarly approach to Shakespeare's plays that distinguished him from other second-rank tragedians of his day. In 1892 he formed a three-year partnership with Louis James, another actor who had found his greatest success outside New York City, and appeared in eighty-six cities with a familiar classical repertory," (Kristan A. Tetens. "Warde, Frederick Barkham" ANBO anb.org/articles/18/18-01210.html). This poster was most likely produced shortly before or at the beginning of this period. As one reviewer wrote a few years later: "Most playgoers have seen Sheridan Knowles' Virginius often, but can never grow tired of the play … [Click Below for Full Description]

Borner, Heinrich
Craz & Gerlach (Joh. Stettner), Freiberg i. Sachsen. First Edition. [1], 20 leaves. AEG. Title page followed by 20 photomechanical images of mining, each with captions in German, printed on one side only. 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt and black. Previous owner signature on title page. Worn at corners and head/tail of spine panel, evidence of old gluing to spine (several small pieces lacking). Hinges loose, minor smudging from handling internally. A serviceable reference copy. Cloth. A fascinating book which illustrates mining in the Freiberg mines, each image taken using Magnesium flash. The first image shows the works from a distance, followed by miners going down the shaft in a narrow elevator, and many of men working. Several images include horses hauling out carts from the tunnels. The images show various methods for shoring up the tunnels, everything from wood beams to brick to carefully piled stone. The publication date was from image captions, each labelled 1892. 10 copies in OCLC/Worldcat as of this listing. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
