B. Meyborg
B. Meyborg, New York 1892 - Before the internet, before phone books, local publishers sometimes coordinated and published directories for profit, bolstered by ad sales. In this case, it also features a history of Germans settled in the New York area, information on local areas, and a directory of addresses, listed with permission. Interspersed throughout text are B&W portrait plates of notable New Yorkers of German descent. Text is in German, except for some ads in the back. Burgundy buckram sports bright gilt text and decoration on front and spine, along with blind-tooling. Portrait plates are in nice condition, with intact tissue guards. Binding is secure. Between title page and frontis, gutter is cracked with sewing visible. Covers exhibit minimal edgewear. Tail of spine is crushed; Head of spine is softened. Back cover has two 1/4" white spots near corners. Interior is gently age toned, more prominent at margins. More aging is apparent along page edges, along with some wear. Text block edges are dusty, with light foxing. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. 227 pages + 29 pages of advertisements. 5.25 x 8.75 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Wisden
1892. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. The books all tend to have worn bindings (some green some blue) but lovely inside. In detail, in this lot we have 1892 to 1899 Original Wisden Rebinds, all eight books with covers and photoplates within, apart from the 1896 in worn blue boards, 1896 in nicer blue boards, the ones in worn blue boards have some marks and some wear but the internal covers are in good order and contents very respectable. The 1893 and 1896 have loose photoplate and page xxxvi has 2/3rd of it missing in the 1893. A nice cheap set. Strategy 1. Would split. More information and pictures available on request and happy to offer some discount if purchased with other Havers Wisdens that I am listing today.

Twain, Mark
New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1892. 7 pp undated ads. Original grey-green cloth decorated in black and olive. First Edition, mixed state (with the earlier patterned endpapers, but also with the frontispiece portrait of Twain that is considered to have been inserted only in the later copies issued). In our experience most copies do not have this frontispiece portrait. This book was issued as a volume in the publisher's "Fiction, Fact, and Fancy Series"; there was no corresponding English edition.~Though MERRY TALES is not an uncommon book, fine copies of it are today few and far between; this is such a copy, unusually fine and bright (generic bookplate). McBride p. 156; Blanck 3435 (state "B"). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hale (John Henry). (1863-1950).
Sampson Low, Marston & Co. London. 1892 1st edition. 8vo. (150mm x 230mm). xi pp + 123 pp + colophon + 4 pp advertisements (Walbran, Bartleet, Hardy, Farlows, Braddell). Illustrated with text figures from steel engravings, title-page printed in black and red. Burgundy cloth, titled in gilt on spine & upper board, bevelled edges, top edge gilt. Some foxing, cloth just a little rubbed but a very good copy. Hale's text is very practical and is supported by fine illustrations of unusual clarity. "He was a supporter of the then very strong lobby which insisted that a salmon fly had to be 100pct correctly dressed as to originality, colour, position of individual feathers or their fibres, length, and neatness of all materials used, if it was to attract a fish. His instructions for tying on materials are as useful today as they were when they were written, for Hale was able to describe the most difficult or tricky techniques. I would place him at the height of the transition from the early 'drab' flies, through the 'gaudy fly' period which included Hale, to the simplified patterns of today." (John Veniard in his introduction to the FFCL edition). . [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rare indeed. 535 p. : ill. ; 18.5 X 12.5 cm. (DOUGLAS, Lord Alfred, & Sandys Watson, eds ) WILDE, Oscar, Lionel Johnson, John Addington Symonds, Pierre Louÿs, et al
Oxford: for the proprietors by James Thornton,, May 1892 – June 1893. An Oxford Magazine without News. [Continued as: An Aesthetic Literary and Critical Magazine.] 15 volumes, octavo. Original wrappers (vol. I, nos. 1–6 and vol. II, no. 1 beige wrappers printed in black; vol. II, nos. 2–4 and vol. III, nos. 1–3 white wrappers printed in blue with Magdalen tower illustration; vol. IV, nos. 1–2 blue wrappers printed in black). Vol. II, no. 1 in the first state with no "Second Edition" to front wrapper (no priority: "only one impression was actually printed" – Mason). Housed in a green morocco-backed bookform slipcase with the numbers held in two cloth chemises. A few of the early numbers with some early repair to wrappers, some with recent light repair; otherwise general chipping to the extremities of the brittle first few numbers, the white wrappered numbers in much better condition though with some staples rusted, and the blue wrappered volumes in near-fine condition but for some small chips to the wrapper edges. Nonetheless an extraordinary survival in very good condition overall, with some numbers uncut. First edition, all published, in original wrappers, an extremely rare complete set. The Spirit Lamp, the Oxford "aesthetic" literary magazine edited by Lord Alfred Douglas, became over four terms the crucible of a radical Uranian culture, and was decried as an "unholy, decadent academy" in rival Oxford magazine The Ephemeral. The Spirit Lamp printed unguardedly homosexual poems by Oscar Wilde, then Douglas's lover, as well as pieces by other such notable decadents as Lion … [Click Below for Full Description]

Benjamin Harrison TLS 7/21/1892
- He will ÒconferÓ with them, but had no desire to ÒcontrolÓ their discretionBenjamin F. Tracy was Secretary of the Navy throughout the administration of President Harrison. He reformed the Navy, making it into a move offensive force, and also removed the politics from naval appointments. In these things he had the PresidentÕs full support. Julian Hawthorne was a noted author and journalist, and the son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. He saw himself as caretaker of his fatherÕs legacy. In 1892, JulianÕs wife apparently sought an appointment for someone within the gift of Navy Secretary Tracy, and when Tracy was not forthcoming, she did not hesitate to go over his head and complain directly to the President.Typed letter signed as President, on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, July 21, 1892, to Mrs. Julian Hawthorne. ÒI saw Secretary Tracy yesterday and he tells me you misunderstood him; that he only said he would confer with me about the appointments which the law devolves upon him; and this he did. I said to him that I had no desire to control his discretion, but talked over with him some of the cases that were pending. The matter is with him, and I think the appointments have all been determined upon, so that nothing further can be done just now.ÓAn interesting letter that reveals HarrisonÕs ability to delegate authority, and disinclination to interfere with decisions on patronage appointments made by his cabinet members.
